I’m not surprised that Rufflets is in the bottom half of local restaurant rankings. We’ve had 2 disappointing experiences recently. We’ve got a long connection with the hotel: as a family we have celebrated significant events and always had great times. Something has changed. Reluctantly posting here as they’ve twice ignored my emailed feedback in the hope they now read (and take action?) – and also to warn others given their apparent lack of interest. We brought my wife’s parents for afternoon tea in June. The experience was lacklustre – this started when we arrived and we stood in the doorway of the restaurant. No-one came to welcome us. The restaurant was not busy and had all the atmosphere of a wake. The service was slow and when food did arrive was not very special. Afternoon tea should feel a bit decadent: this felt serviceable and the scones were absolutely terrible. In August we came for a birthday dinner for my sister, who has Downs syndrome. Before eating, we sat outside the restaurant. Staff made little effort to interact or make us feel welcome. I had to go to the restaurant to order drinks. They knew beforehand that it was her 50th birthday (and she was wearing a birthday badge …) and opened presents in the lounge. Staff didn’t make any effort to acknowledge the event, or engage in any way. Service from all staff was perfunctory, verging on cold. Smiles certainly weren’t on their menu. At the end of the meal, when I asked for the bill, there was awkward silence as I paid. No comment, or question (“Did you enjoy the meal?”, “Hope you had a good evening”, “Thanks for coming”). Go elsewhere – there are many better places.

Dumfries’s hidden gem in plain sight, I have been visiting Dumfries town centre for many years, unfortunately many great local businesses have gone but really pleased to see the tea room in Barbours is still going strong. Staff are very polite and helpful, the place is busy, food is excellent and good value. I really enjoy the cream team, sandwiches, scones, butter, jam, fresh cream and a hot drink for £7.50 fantastic value. Well done to the staff and owners

Spotlessly clean and one of the best Premier Inn’s we have stayed in. Had the meal deal and the food was excellent. All the staff are friendly and chatty. Perfect location, especially for the Hydro and Armadillo which are both just a hop over the bridge at the door. We were going to Barrowlands which is just over a two mile walk along the river. Don’t follow the sat nav which tells you to come off at junction 19, it’s much easier to exit at junction 24.

We took our hound family for dinner and received a warm welcome. It was a semi-formal environment and delicious food. They also had a kids menu (~£7.50 for kids mains). Booking is essential and they're not open every evening. Would definitely visit again. Menu photos attached, although I believe that the menu does change quite regularly.

I've eaten here a few times and had some great meals so was looking forward to a Sunday Roast collected from the Loveable Rogue (their new name). In the past, the meat has been delicious, perfectly seasoned and served with outstanding sides. All I can say is that I am glad I was at home, as having to put food back on the plate is fairly unattractive but the beef was so gristly that neither of us could actually eat it. It was over salted as well, which didn't help. Had we been in the restaurant then I am sure that we would have had that taken into consideration when it was time for the bill. As we had collected it, all we got was a 'sorry it was not good, we have let the kitchen know' email. Apparently they are using the same supplier and cut as we have had in the past - hence the hit and miss title. There are loads of places doing Sunday Roast now, both part time sit in and take away. With chances to experience hospitality being limited just now, I think I will take my chances and my money elsewhere...

Wonderful stay in this beautiful place. Food was excellent, staff really polite and helpful, room extremely nice and clean. Had fantastic time and would definitely recommend. The place is unique, won’t see anything like this elsewhere. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
