The best restaurants serving British food in England

Went with friends few weeks ago had delicious fish chips so decided to go for steak ale pie. So disappointed tasteless gravy watery and although loads meat no taste to it. It would of been easier to eat with puff pastry top, it had, hard short crust top . Peas had a burnt taste to them so very disappointed. .

Eaten here a few times and food has always been tasty. Portion sizes are really good as is the service. Lamb burger special was full of flavours, chicken burger was tender and huge. Really enjoyed it - just sort your gents toilets out. It’s impossible to shut the cubicle door without brushing your legs against the toilet bowl!

My wife and I stopped in for lunch and a pint while out for an afternoon wander in the countryside. The food was amazing as was the pint. It definitely put a spring in our step for the walk home.

We are regular visitors at The Royal Oak. We went for a meal last night and the food was fantastic as always. Imaginative meals, not just the usual standard pub food. Generous food portions - I was stuffed after one course. Great kids meal options - freshly made not just out of a freezer! Lovely relaxed and cosy atmosphere. Friendly, helpful and attentive staff. 10/10 all round! The poor reviews baffle me? Give it a try!

We found the Masons Arms after searching for local dog friendly pubs during a stay in the area on 15th March 2025. We were absolutely blown away by the whole experience...firstly the food was amazing. We had the fishcake, and the prawn starters which were delicious. Followed by fish and chips and a cheese and bacon burger. The staff were lovely and made us feel very welcome... and they loved petting our dogs - the dogs were given a bowls of treats which was very nice of the staff. Our meals were washed down with a lovely pint (Cumbria Way) and a lovely glass of red wine. A lovely meal and memorable evening. Thank you

Lovely staff, great food. We called in for coffee but after looking at the menu decided to order lunch. The poached eggs were perfect!

We went on Tuesday lunchtime for the £10 specials , and took my parents with us. Myself and my mum had the fish and chips . The fish was cooked beautifully, big flakes of fish , the chips homemade and homemade mushy peas , we could fault it. My husband and dad both had the cottage pie , both said it was amazing , for £10 the portions are very generous. Yes it was quiet in there as someone previously stated , we didn’t find it lacked atmosphere !! In fact the staff were wonderful and very helpful and friendly . Perfect food in a perfect setting with the most spectacular views , what more could you want ?

Great food, nicely presented great friendly staff, would definitely go again.

5 Estrellas debido al 'Camarero'? que nos atendió fuera (en la 1 calle o 2a visita) , siendo un 'políglota' (9 idiomas fluidos) , Y dando Excelente Servicio. Haber visitado por lo menos DOS VECES (Tanto mi cumpleaños y mi cumpleaños de hermanas menores (sentado en interiores - noviembre) , y cumpleaños de mamás (sentado al aire libre - abril). No puedo recordar el año real - Mamá falleció en diciembre de 2022 , por lo que fue ANTES de esa fecha en ambas ocasiones. MEJOR COMIDA DE CALIDAD QUE HE TENIDO, también el mejor servicio de la historia. "Muy caro", pero la comida es tan buena que iría allí mucho más si pudiera permitírmelo. Tan impresionado estaba por el camarero 'políglota', que me inspiró a aprender 'más idiomas', ahora 'sé' un poco de cada uno, de entre 50 - 74 idiomas, de todo el mundo de 6 continentes, y de lugares que nunca visitaré debido a la falta de tiempo, dinero y nivel de aptitud física de salud (ahora más de 60 años y parcialmente discapacitado en este punto en 2025).

We picked up a box of 4 fondant fancies last week which were amazing! Not cheap, but worth the money. Had to queue for a while which was annoying as we didn't have much time, but other than that, would recommend.

Really enjoyed lunch and cocktails here today, the food was delicious and the drinks hit the spot, if you like a sweet drink I recommend the cherry Bakewell friendly welcoming staff 10/10

Lovely food - lots of specials and at a very reasonable price. Friendly atmosphere. Dog friendly. Traditional pub vibe that you don’t find very often! Good for families, couples etc.

Had lunch at The plough yesterday food was amazing cannot fault it , very good portion sizes and good value for money, service was brilliant couldn't do enough for us will definitely be returning.

Very friendly service with great teas and coffee and the tea bread served toasted with butter ss amazing. If it wasn't misty looked like a greatcview across Windermere.

Great pub, the food is stunning and home made, the beers lovely and Very well priced to, the live music makes for a brilliant evening, can’t wait to go back.
