The Angel Inn in Wakefield

Dropped in on a Sunday afternoon after Grok (my AI) suggested the Angel as the best spot for a Sunday lunch between Pontefract and Barnsley, boy did grok nail that recommendation!! Fitted us in no problem, food was just amazing (especially the black pudding wrapped scotch eggs!!) portions were huge, like the Yorkshire puddings!!, vegetables all cooked to perfection. Definitely couldn’t fault a single thing, well done to you all, and a shout out to the fabulous staff. Thanks for a great Sunday lunch, you didn’t disappoint and Grok rules for recommendations!!

Pulled into The Angel after visiting Nostell Priory. The best Fish and Chips I've eaten in years. The batter was light and crunchy. The fish itself was perfectly cooked. All the staff were attentive and friendly. We'll be back.

What an absolute gem The Angel is! As non-locals spoiled for choice, we were thrilled to stumble upon this standout for Sunday lunch. From start to finish, The Angel delivered an exceptional experience that ticked every box. The staff were warm, attentive, and professional, creating a welcoming atmosphere. The decor was tasteful and well-maintained, with a spotless dining area that set the tone for a delightful meal. The ambiance struck a perfect balance cozy yet refined, ideal for a relaxed Sunday. The food, however, was the true star. We kicked off with a shared scotch egg wrapped in black pudding, a dish that could easily go wrong but was executed flawlessly. The egg was perfectly cooked, the black pudding added a rich depth, and the accompanying small salad brought a fresh, vibrant contrast. It was a taste sensation, beautifully presented. For mains, we indulged in the Sunday roast, and wow what a feast! The towering, golden Yorkshire puddings were a sight to behold. I opted for the gammon, which melted in the mouth with every bite, while my partner chose the beef, equally tender and flavorful. The gammon, in my opinion, stole the show, cooked to perfection. The roast came with creamy mash, crispy roast potatoes, a generous selection of perfectly cooked vegetables, a stuffing ball, and rich, savory gravy. We were even treated to an extra gravy boat and checked on mid-meal to ensure we had enough, a thoughtful touch. I was over the moon when they offered mushy peas as an extra side. This addition made the meal even more special. After two drinks and with very full bellies, we left utterly satisfied. The portions were generous, the quality outstanding, and the price felt like excellent value for such a high-caliber experience. The Angel delivered a culinary delight and a memorable afternoon. Called in on Saturday (not pre-booked) asked for a table but was told that they were full. 5 minutes later was told that they had a cancellation and could squeeze us in. Food was amazing , Scotch egg in Black pudding 100% , Rib eye was awesome too. Staff , service and general ambience couldn't be faulted. Highly recommend

Brilliant wonderful food and wonderful service

Food arrived within good time and was very nice. Service from waiters wasn't great, no food menus given out upon arrival, finaly given menus after ordering drinks at the table. While enjoying our meals we wasn't asked if everything was OK nor were we ever asked if we would like more drinks ( which in my opinion is where pubs and restaurants make most of their profit) we sat looking at the waiters to try catch their attention, so that we could order more drinks but that didn't seem to work as they was chatting with customers at their table. I understand having a nice relationship with customers running a nice pub for locals but don't forget about the other customers. If this was a buy your drinks from the bar type of pub/restaurant, we weren't informed.

Nice pub with nice food. Service was almost non-existent. We didn't get an extra round of drinks with our meal as nobody came round.

Booked on the day on a Saturday so grateful we could be accommodated. The food was fantastic, home made steak pie in particular was delicious. Puddings were also excellent and all fairly priced. Service was great and attentive and overall made it a lovely experience. Would def recommend and will be back.

Eaten here a few times and food has always been tasty. Portion sizes are really good as is the service. Lamb burger special was full of flavours, chicken burger was tender and huge. Really enjoyed it - just sort your gents toilets out. It’s impossible to shut the cubicle door without brushing your legs against the toilet bowl!

A nice place to sit and enjoy lovely meal with family and friends. We didn’t book and even though they were busy the staff fitted us in, they are lovely, welcoming and very helpful. I would definitely recommend and will be visiting again soon

Lass behind bar was rude and very blunt, wouldn't recommend

Called in today for a Sunday lunch we were stood at the bar for 20 minutes with staff wanking past looking at us with out a hello how can we help or anything At least this give us a good chance to look at the Sunday lunches othered was eating and safe to say this wasn’t for us blessing in disguise I guess

Called in today after a walk round Nostell Priory. The staff were immediately welcoming, couldn't do enough for us. We ate from the 2 course menu, less than £13 each.... the food was top quality, the perfect late lunch. All washed down with a cracking pint of Guiness (Madri for the significant other) . Excellent value for excellent food, we will definately be back for more.

Great little pub. Great atmosphere everyone is very friendly and had a fire on the go to keep us warm and toasty Everyone in our party enjoyed their food. We had a prawn sandwich, fish and chips and lasagne. The bill including 3 bottles of wine, and some puddings came to £140. Very reasonable.

First class food would recommend a visit. Visited on a Sunday, had pre booked our table as was really busy. Being quite finicky with food I was delighted with the quality & the service. Prawn Cocktail was delicious but missing tomato, still worthy off a 10. Chose Roast beef dinner and asked for selected veg due to tastes. This was accommodated. This meal was delicious. Left feeling full to burst. Personally having never visited before although the rest of my party have, I can honestly say I will definitely be going again. Even has a brilliant choice of drinks . I would recommend booking a table so not to be disappointed. First class all round. Thank you Julie.

Had the week day 2 course set menu, was lovely and so good value, booked for two more times on the spot!

Really slow service, left waiting ages, no offer of desserts until we went to the bar, over priced for what it is and very meagre portions, not one to go back to.

Came here for a meal with my dad and had a lovely time. There was a wide variety of dishes on the menu, definitly something for everyone. We opted of the homemade steak and ale pie and the fish. Both dishes were lovely. You can tell that the food is made with care and everything is homemade. The atmosphere was very chill and relaxing and the staff were also very nice and friendly. There was a large selection of drinks available too. A great spot to eat and drink in Ackworth 👌 Thank you to the angel team for having us 😊

Went along today with my old Dad, where we met two friends. The staff are very welcoming, and wonderfully efficient. Nothing is too much trouble for them. I had the Turkey dinner, and it was superb. Loads of meat, and nicely cooked veg along with roast and mash potato. All of it nice and hot. Absolutely wonderful meal. A lovely place to go for a meal, whatever the occasion. The staff are an absolute credit. It's nice to find such a friendly, welcoming place. I'll definitely go again.🍽️👍.

Went here today with my partner for lunch, it isn’t our first time here because we simply love the place, it is good value, great ambience, lovely decor and top class food, the service is spot on and I wanted to review the food today, I had the small portion of fish and chips, it was just enough for me and was cooked to perfection, my partner had the Garlic & Mushroom Risotto and it was simply gorgeous, I tasted it and it will certainly be what I order on my return, so 10/10 to Joe the chef who turns out some beautiful well presented food, I think Gordon Ramsey better watch out because Joe will be stealing the show!. We will be back soon and I must mention the bar and waiting staff who are so friendly, helpful and attentive, you are a credit to the Angel Inn, I highly recommend this venue and promise you will not be disappointed!..

Had a birthday celebration at lunchtime the food, service and atmosphere couldn't have been better. Excellent value and great tasting home cooked food. Can tell it's all freshly made. Thank you. Recommend without a doubt.

I’m not one into writing reviews and I wrote one last week. But tonight I have called again for something to eat and drink. Nice atmosphere nice staff and really really good food at a reasonable price. I’m making it my place to go have a drink and a very nice meal every week from now on.

Maisie served us and a very polite and helpful young lady. The food was delicious compliments to the chef and his staff I really couldn’t fault it. Just drinks or food 100% a very good place.

Went for dinner (booked) last night (Saturday) we are not regulars but do go about every 6 weeks. From start to finish it was a lovely experience, drinks ordered and served to the table, fantastic menu and food was amazing - perfect portion sizes (large!) Our waitress was a lady called Cass and was absolutely what made our evening so nice, attentive without being in your face, knowledgeable and polite. The other waitresses seemed to be providing a similar service to other tables. Clearly a good management team. Well done 👍

Best Sunday lunch we have had for a long time. 1st visit, definitely won’t be the last. Meat tender, all the veg was fresh and all served hot. The service was good and all the staff were polite & friendly. Would definitely recommend.

The Angel has been in the same safe hands for 10 years now. Still a great atmosphere, lovely food and a friendly welcome. Good drink selection, ample parking, outside seating that catches the sun. Has it really been a decade since that first chip butty?!

Great experience with friendly staff and amazing home cooked food

First time here and it was well worth visiting. Lovely food and all served freshly cooked. The special sausage trio I had was really tasty. The lasagne looked amazing too. Cheesecake desserts finished the meal off nicely.

Visited The Angel for the first time to meet up with friends for lunch. The food was average. Towards the end of the meal I asked for a chamomile tea as I have a health issue with my throat which means I have to be careful with certain hot drinks. I was told they didn’t have this which is fair enough. I carry my own tea bags for times like this and have never had a problem in other cafes and restaurants when I’ve asked for hot water if they don’t stock chamomile tea. The waitress took my order and returned some time later to say as hot water wasn’t on the menu they couldn’t serve it to me. I asked to speak to a manager and after a further time delay someone came to say that in this occasion only they would bring me a cup of hot water but not in the future. When I queried why this was I was told it was a cost issue. Really? A cup of hot water?! Between the 3 of us our bill amounted to just under £100 and they struggled to give me a small cup of hot water. For this reason I will not be visiting here again.

Absolutely ridiculous arrived at 1.00pm and told can't serve food to 6 adults and 5 kids as chef can't accommodate. ! Only about 12 patrons in the whole pub. You wonder why pubs are on the decline. Such a shame.

There was 4 of us on a birthday celebration all of us had different choice of meal every one of them was excellent, highly recommended by all. Thank you. We will be back

What a truly wonderful experience at the Angel. All 5 family members ordered different meals. All meals were delivered at the same time piping hot and absolutely delicious. Lovely professional staff, I would highly recommend..

Another fabulous meal at The Angel tonight. My other half had venison burger, which he described as spectacular. I had the a lovely tender chicken breast with fondant potatos, buttered greens and the most delicious mushroom and white wine sauce. Both really enjoyed it. This is our favourite spot for great food and the Sunday lunch cannot be beaten in our view. Would recommend giving it a try, we will definitely be working our way through the new autumn menu.

I'm sure it would be very nice if somebody would actually take time to answer the telephone to take a booking...........

Came here for my tea with my grandmother last week, the service was incredible I was served by lovely blonde girl. I cannot fault either the food or the service. I shall definitely be returning.

Went for lunch today, and we had the two course meals for £11.95, the first course was nice. We had a chicken skewer (on the menu, it says skewers, plural, you get one ) . Then for main we had the black sheep ale beef pie with mash,peas and gravy (in a jug) , the pie was so salty it was unbelievable if you like a lot of salt you really didn't need to add, also the mash was instant mash which was horrible, it was like paste and the gravy was so thick in the jug it came out in a blob. Would not recommend going there to eat.

Never had other than excellent food and first class service. I've been through the menu and the smaller portions are more than enough for me. Love the steak pie and the fish and chips with mushy peas. Best in locality without doubt. Highly recommend. You won't be disappointed.

We visited for a family meal and both myself and my son had the 24 hour braised rib of beef with horseradish mash, and we both thought it was one of the best meals we’ve had in a restaurant for a long time. The meat just fell apart, the mash was so tasty, the right amount of horseradish and lovely fresh veg. We have visited before and will definitely visit again, just please keep this on the menu!

Been a few times, food was decent and serving staff were all friendly and attentive although we've only managed to eat once. Definitely need to pre-book, been snottily turned away as walk-ins by the grumpy lady on the diary more than once.

Sat outside on a beautiful day. Not pleasant, beer garden too near very busy main road. Wanted food but had stopped serving at 2pm.

Tried to book July now, but could not accommodate us as we had a wheelchair, very disappointing as we have been there previously without a problem.

WARNING IF YOU Suffer from gluten intolerance do not eat at the Angle. This year my wife and I have been out for 10 meals in a 20 mile radius of home, to various different pubs and Cafes, on all those occasions absolutely no issue with gluten contamination. The first time eating at the Angel within half an hour of the meal my wife was ill. We have had this problem at other venues, but the staff have always very apologetic and said we will review our food allergy preparation work Area. But not the Angel, they try to blame the wine, which by the way all wine is free of gluten. Will never eat there again.

Not our first time at the Angel. The food is freshly prepared and beautiful. A delay between ordering and service but well worth the wait. Attentive and friendly staff and nothing too much trouble.

Came with a group of friends for a meal in April. We were seated quickly and our orders were taken in good time. I ordered a Greek salad starter off the specials board and a Lasagne off the smaller appetites menu. The food came quick and tasted lovely. The Greek salad was delicious, I would recommend putting it on the standard menu. Even though it was a smaller portion the Lasagne was a good size and very filling. For a starter, main course and 2 glasses of wine the bill for myself was just shy of £30 which I think is great value. Will definitely be back again.

I was not impressed to have booked a table to meet up with a friend to find when we got there it was shut! The website says it's open and did all night, don't take bookings if you're not open! And update your website plz so at least people are aware not to waste their time, I saw a few cars pull in the carpark n leave again when they realised it was closed,

Brilliant food, good service and a lot of clocks on the wall! The fish (which was haddock, the best kind of fish) and chips with peas was tasty! Would definitely come here again!

Came for a drink with my husband this evening and enjoyed an alcohol free Heineken with lime and an alcohol free gin with lemonade. Kat the server behind the bar was so welcoming, friendly and helpful. She was knowledgeable of the variety of drinks and had a lovely bubbly personality about her. Was nice to visit and as a non drinker to have a selection of alcohol free drinks to enjoy. Thanks again Kat for your helpful and kind attitude :)

Had a lovely evening catching up with friends. We all chose different meals and everyone said how much they enjoyed the food. We didn't realise at the time of booking, that Wednesdays is quiz night, and although we didn't actually take part we enjoyed guessing the answers. The staff couldn't have been more friendly and helpful. The service provided was second to none

Went on Mothers day,was very busy,but we were served straight away, soup to start with warm crusty bread..Roast dinner,piping hot,just too much,couldn't eat it all...unfortunately no room for a pudding....Service was very good, appreciated a check back,during started and main course...

My favourite place to eat, but notice the chips are now a pale, tasteless imitation of what they once were, hope it's not the start of things to come, as everything else was top notch.

I can honestly whole heartedly say I have never had a better steak. The food was delicious. The staff amazing and not in your face. My partner wanted scampi which was only on the lighter bites menu- they gave him a full sized portion!! AMAZING!!

What an amazing pub, we went on a Saturday lunch to celebrate a birthday, the food was excellent and I really mean excellent!! The service from the staff was outstanding and the drinks selection huge. We felt like valued customers and even though we live 50 miles away, we'll be back again!!

Turned up at 1pm to a half filled pub to be told they weren't accepting walk ins as they had a party of 8 due to arrive. We were a party of 4 and would have finished our food before the other party arrived. Good beer though.

We are very lucky to call this place our local. The food is absolutely brilliant. In 10 years i have never had a bad meal. Make sure to book for food. Kitchen is small so while you may walk in and get a table for drinks, you may not be able to order food as the kitchen is up to its capacity.

Good, hot, homemade food!! We opted for the lasagne and steak and ale pie, both were made fresh today we were told by the waiting staff. Both were served piping hot - they were still steaming when we took our last mouthful! The lasagne was served with an amazing cheesy garlic bread!! The only slight disappointment was the chips served with the pie, they were slightly undercooked and we were not 100% sure they were homemade. We also opted for the scotch egg with black pudding (from the starters menu but we had it as a side) which was also really good, tasty, and the egg was runny! The accompanying onion chutney was also nice!! Perfect lunch for a cold winter's day, would recommend!!

Came for Sunday lunch with my uncle and auntie and had one of the best meals out I’ve had in years! Exceptional value, quality and service and best Yorkshire puddings I’ve ever had. The pub is tastefully decorated too and had the most beautiful real Christmas tree I’ve seen in a pub in my life. Fantastic experience with absolutely nothing to fault them on. Thanks!

It's definitely a place to visit. My only disappointment was my dessert, jam roly poly, very small portion for £5.95 compared to the other desserts served at our table ( fudge cake chocolate brownie apple tart ).

We had the most wonderful meal tonight in the Angel Ackworth . The food was home cooked and just amazing and the staff were lovely special thanks to our server Jack !! He was so polite friendly and just wonderful and lived up to my favourite name !!! . The waitress I think was Rebecca and what a diamond she was , so attentive and was there every time we looked up . I highly recommend it was just a wonderful experience all round . Ten out of ten ❤️❤️❤️ My husband had fish and chips the fish was flakey white the batter amazing . I had the steak and ale pie and it was one of the best Iv ever had . Well done your staff are so courteous and helpful . We will definitely be back .

Just called on off chance of getting a meal at lunchtime and we where supposed to find that almost all of the tables were reserved and not surprised the food was delicious I had steak and ale pie home made chips and mushy peas the battered haddock was exellent all served piping hot a real treat well worth a visit prompt service well done
