Lovely welcoming pub that is genuinely dog friendly (as opposed to dogs tolerated like many), beers fantastic and well kept, staff warm and welcoming. Highly recommended.

Despite the soggy & misty conditions, we thoroughly enjoyed our meal at this lovely Lakeland pub. Great service and nice food. Our farmhouse table in the snug was a little low to be sitting at comfortably over an extended period (tops of legs squeezed!) but this was a small niggle.

We traveled through today for a meal with family, the party consisted of four adults, three children and a baby. Nothing was too much trouble, the lovely water found us a lovely seating area upstairs. Even though there were only two staff members .. service was faultless. I had the belly pork which was delicious and cooked till tender. All across the table there were compliments on the food and we didn't stop saying how good it was until the last bite. Thank you to Andi and Amy for making our trip through so pleasant and worth while. We will definitely be returning 100% A***

bizarre service.. prebooked lunch for family of five, not particurlarly friendly welcome, given terrible table in a corridor, felt awful, asked we could set outside instead, was told no with no explaination, then 5 mins later told yes if we wanted but we might get wet. we sat outside in sunshine! then told that we had to pay the bill before recieving lunch as we might run away..felt like a criminal.. . .no offer of more drinks or dessert, fish and chips and pie were very good but unfortunately the bizarre service spoilt the whole experience.. such a shame.

From the moment we arrived to the moment we left, the staff were both extremely friendly and knowledgable. The bar tender recommended some excellent hand pulled beers to accompany the restaurant quality food we ordered. We stayed in the four poster bedroom, which was beautiful and well appointed. After a good nights sleep, the breakfast room boasts some amazing views and a wonderful place to start the day, with a hearty full English breakfast, lovely fresh orange, croissants amongst other offerings. Can’t recommend highly enough.

We found this place after visiting the local area, needing to find somewhere dog friendly and we were so lucky. It was a beautiful Saturday lunchtime and after a notice advising they were only serving reservations only due to a staff shortage, we thought we’d ask anyway after driving out specially. The staff were very accommodating and said they were able to take the two of us (plus dog), so found a cosy seat inside with great views out.The food wasn’t cheap as the reviewer below thinks it should be, but instead it was freshly cooked, flavourful food. My partner had Boar sausages and mash, which he wolfed, and I wasn’t too hungry so went for the small starter ribs with a side of chips. They were beautifully cooked, with the meat falling off the bone (I find ribs can be touch and go in restaurants), and the sauce was lovely that it was cooked in. The portion certainly wasn’t small and I probably didn’t need the side after all, but I’d definitely go back. It’s obviously popular as a lot of people were saying both inside and out, with and without dogs. My only tip would be to time it right, as there isn’t much parking, so get there early or late and be respectful on parking as it’s a tight road/bend!

Overpriced. I don’t usually review restaurant but having very recent visited the Masons arms I feel compelled to summarise my experience. In terms of location, ambiance, food and experience there was certainly nothing wrong with the Masons Arms but in my view the food is in general overpriced for what you get. I think a fair price would be approximately £3-4 less per main course. There is equally nice food available within a short distance of this pub within only a few miles of strawberry bank. It could be that strawberry bank is becoming a little microenvironment commending high prices due to proximity to the punch bowl etc, but please be are of this is you live in the area and know where to go for alternatives.

We continue to love the place, after a slight mix up on the order and getting served a Rump of Lamb instead of the Lamb burger they did their upmost to rectify the situation. Can’t fault them on the service and the ribs, the sauce is not as sweet as it used to be which is a good thing as they could be a bit sickly when eating a large portion to yourself, the meat was falling off the bone and the family were fighting to finish them as they were so delicious.A great selection cask ales and great atmosphere even on a wet and windy storm Eunice weekend.Highly recommended place to eat.

Disgraceful experience in what we used to have down as one of our Top 5 for a Sunday lunch. The manager was so rude and uninviting. This chap I can only assume is on minimum wage and clearly doesn’t give a damn about the business. My wife, 2 year old son and I were treated with absolute disgust when visiting on the 13th Feb. We will most definitely not be eating here again, the place has gone backwards and the food one would associate with a Brewers Fayre type of establishment. Not the place it used to be!

Friday night place was packed. They managed to squeeze our reservation in a few days before. After seeing such high praise reviews on here we had such high expectations. Lovely atmosphere when we arrived, cosy wood burning fire in the bar. Very friendly hospitable bar and serving staff. Friendly and polite. One of us ordered the vegetarian lasagna. Looked and tasted good. Homemade, with chips and salad, our table also ordered the butter milk chicken, again no complaints tasty & fresh. The big let down were the steaks, sirloin was “ok”, edible but not much taste. Ribeye not edible, full of fat & gristle. Steaks were cooked medium rare as we requested, we don’t blame the chef, he cooked the steak as requested, the issue was the quality of the meat. Maybe they need to change suppliers. They have a great butchers local to the pub, why don’t they buy top quality local steaks from there instead…. Anyway they were very understanding about the steak complaint and didn’t charge us for the ribeye, so that was fair enough…

We went for a family dinner on Boxing Day. They were seriously understaffed but instead of managing the tables that had booked they shoved us in a converted corridor and forgot about us while serving walk-ins.The starters were nice but that’s about it. The waiter didn’t speak at all, never asked us if we were happy with anything and just said ‘you want pudding menus?’ When he cleared our 50% finished plates. When he brought them no one came to take our order until we went down to ask for the bill. At which point he came up and said ‘do you not want pudding?’. Also drinks that we requested serval times were missed. My lamb was seriously tough (£25) and was a mission to chew through. The chicken supreme (£19) was inedible tough. Very disappointing meal and extremely expensive for the experience overall. Doubt we’ll be going back and we’ll also not be risking the other pubs in the group nearby.

Requested a special table as we have a service dog and shoved in the corner in the bar which wasn't big enough and told there was no other tables as we were the only people in the pub. A must to book (online - super easy) even on a mid week it gets busy but by the looks of things they don't book every table out all the time so they can really focus on good service. We had 2 courses and were absolutley stuffed. The ribs were the best we've ever tried no wonder they call them their famous dish. Both starters and mains were fab and the drinks prices very reasonable... when we're in the area again we will def be back.

I've been going to the Masons Arms for over 40 years; it was always the "go to" place with a great atmosphere, great views, food and drink. I know Covid has been a challenge for the hospitality industry but many other places have recovered and offer a great service; Sadly the Masons is now a place to avoid; some unprofessional staff, poor quality over priced food. A booking system which leaves empty tables, a kitchen that only works part time - what was one of the Lake District treasures is now an embarrassment that visitors and locals alike should avoid. What a shame such a great atmospheric pub has declined so far so quickly.

My husband and I booked for dinner earlier this week. We had hoped to dropin for lunch but they weren't taking 'walk-ins' as they had staffing difficulties - but I rang and booked for the next day for dinner. The staff were all very welcoming and friendly and although they had booked us a table in their upstairs restaurant they offered to move us downstairs as they could see I was suffering with a knee injury - which was kind and attentive. The pub is cosy and warm and the atmosphere was convivial.I had the Venison pie which was stuffed full of lovely meat and gravy and my husband had the Wild Boar and Damson sausage which he reported was also delicious. The beer was good and the bar staff knowledgeable about the ales.We didn't' have starters and thank God we didn't as we noticed from the couple sitting next to us that they were enormous!! What a lovely, cosy place! It was so inviting and a real traditional pub. We sat upstairs and had the soup for starter which was delicious and then the meat and potato pie for main which was probably one of the best pies I’ve had! The quality of the meat was amazing and it was packed with it. The soup was also delicious, you can tell all the food is cooked fresh. I would’ve given 5 stars if the service was a little bit quicker but really cannot complain. I’d definitely go back.

Visited some years ago with my wife so expected the same great experience but was bitterly disappointed. The room was extremely dusty and cold, verging on shabby when compared to our last visit. The radiators in the room were not working as was the towel rail in the bathroom and the shower smelly. The window was open at the top and unable to close as seized. The evening meal we were expecting to be as good as our last visit but was very poor by comparison (overcooked and tough, scant selection ) The original owners of individual inns sold to the Robinsons brewery chain and since then we can only assume standards have slipped greatly. As a result we cancelled our second night, need we say more!

We had two evening meals here during our holiday. The first night we were warned that the service might be slow, due to having only one chef, but the food arrived in good time and was very tasty with large portions. On our second visit the food was probably better - a bit more finesse - and the service continued to be friendly and efficient. The bar, where we ate, is quite compact but very characterful. The pub is a bit out of the way but has lovely views from the outdoor area.

Been coming here for forty years ever since I got my driving licence at 17 and witnessed the change from local inn with the best bottled beers in the north west to gastro-pub with rooms. Except it isn't a gastro pub and the beers have gone to be replaced by a smaller but very good choice of ales well kept.Had burger and chips for sixteen quid. Dry overcooked burger and chips which had obviously been left out and reheated. Probably best part was the cheese and bacon topping. Starter of four small pieces of squid was again overcooked but the salad was tasty enough.Still got the splendid view, would come back again in the summer for a beer but it's now off my list of places to eat.

Never Again……Table booked weeks ago for 2:15pm. It’s a 17 minute drive from Windermere. Amy called us at 2:20 to say “you’ve a table booked for 2:15?” Reply “yes we’re 2 minutes away” Amy “the kitchen closes in 5 minutes”. Arrive, shown to table, bench seating. Not comfortable. Amy then tells us loudly “the kitchen closes in 5 minutes, so there’s no time to take a drinks order. Choose your meals, as we need to get the order into the kitchen!” Replies, yes we know this because you phoned us to tell us this, so if you stop talking to us we’ll be able to look at the menu and tell you what we’d like to order” Amy disappears. 12 minutes later, no Amy, no order taken. Walks through to bar area to place order. Waiter says he’ll come through and take out order. Comes through, “would you like any drinks?” Replies, yes we would, but we’re told we could t order drinks until the kitchen had our order….. orders food, can’t order wine as no wine list offered. Waits….. wine list brought. Food arrived. Over seasoned junk….. Pan fried Cumbrian chicken breast with buttered leeks, crispy pancetta, garden peas & wild mushrooms, black garlic puree, spiced carrot jam & red wine jus. Served with a kebab of new potatoes roasted with thyme £18.25. Too salty to eat - doggy bag please. Traditional Fish & Chips £14.50Robinsons ale battered Haddock, hand cut chips, mushy peas & tartare sauce. Served over a napkin…. Which could t be seen until part of it was consumed. Doggie bag is self service. I’d a takeaway container is brought to the table. “Would you like to see the dessert menu?” Reply if the kitchen is still open we would yes please. We order lemons posset and sticky toffee puddings. Waitress returns with salt and pepper pots, setting up the table for evening service - WHILST we were sat there. £130 bill paid - in full. Feedback given when I’d got my parents in the car. I pointed out how rushed and rubbish it all was. That if the kitchen does close at 2:20pm why take 2:15pm bookings? They just blamed it on head office. Home now - dogs won’t eat the doggy bag! Says it all.

Great food, lovely setting and very attentive staff. We hadn’t made a booking, and luckily because it was early (16.30) we were able to get a table for what was a very late lunch, or very early dinner! They were fully booked for dinner, but made us feel very comfortable and welcomed us to a lovely table near the fire. My friend had a fabulous steak pie with an enormous crusty topping, and I went for the lentil Dahl. I was assured it was not too hot or spicy, and fortunately he was right. We decided to share a pudding, sticky toffee what else, and it was delicious. Although a bit tricky to find this little gem it is worth the effort with a trusted sat nav. If you’re in the area don’t pass it by, but remember to book and avoid any disappointment.

Utterly dismayed and disgusted. Our children missed out on their last day of the holiday because of the atrocious service and standards of this property and it’s management. We booked this last minute and on arrival at around 8:30pm, we all agreed it was lovely for the first five minutes. We discovered a door in our apartment that was unlocked and led into next door’s bedroom containing bunk beds and their personal belongings. We tried to close and secure it but couldn’t. I spoke with the manager who came to look, whilst assuring me that it could be closed , that it should have been fixed and that there was no handle on the other side for the other guests to access our room. Upon inspection he confirmed that there was definitely a handle the other side and that he couldn’t get the door to lock. There was also a hole in the door which would have meant everything could have been heard from either side even if it was secured. We decided that we weren’t comfortable to keep out children in an unsafe environment, so did some looking around and the only availability we could find was nearly £400 for the night which we simply couldn’t afford. We had not choice to set off back home, driving for over two hours, arriving home by nearly midnight with 5 and ten year old in tow. The manager could not have seem less bothered, appeared to have been drinking, and just told us there’s nothing he could do. For the price of this property I think it’s fair to expect that the rooms are secure and checked between bookings to ensure this. It appeared they’d not been cleaned either which was hugely disappointing. The fact that the manager thought there was a even a remote possibility that we would be happy to stay in an insecure room is shocking. Even worse is that if he had been correct that there was no handle on the other side and if he had managed to secure the door, he would have allowed us to stay whilst still having access to the other apartment, with the other guests having no idea that they were being potentially left in a vulnerable position. In summary the surroundings are lovely, the location is great, the building is stunning but the management, attitude, sense, safety and customer service levels are shockingly terrible

Staff were excellent and very professional and efficient. The food however was overcooked and not up to the standards we remember pre-pandemic. The menu choice was limited and food seemed pre-prepared. Our food was overcooked with chips rock hard and one small bowl of single vegetable. On previous visits (pre-pandemic) the food choice had much greater variety with menu across pages and trays of vegetables for sharing along with choice of potatoes for example. We understand that times are tough and staff are limited but standards have dropped compared to our regular visits two years ago, whilst prices have increased. Venue position and quality of outside space is still excellent.

Pretty pub and nice garden but we had a long wait for cutlery to come (after a reminder) after the food was served so it wasn't hot by the time we could eat.

Yet another pleasant evening at the Masons Arms, despite being short staffed due to Covid the team still delivered an excellent meal with great service in a pleasant surrounding. Thank you it was appreciated.

Great place to eat. We loved the food, the service and the beautiful view. We booked as a family of 4, quite far in advance. Can see why it is so popular. We had asked for the mains for our two teenage sons (fabulous fish & chips) to be brought with our starters. The staff went out of their way to make sure we had a great experience. Would thoroughly recommend the Masons Arms and would return without hesitation. The sticky toffee pudding is fantastic.

What a great pub.! We stayed locally and couldn't believe our luck when we walked in to find this was our local for the week! Great food, a warm welcome and a truly spectacular view. Couldn't ask for more in a pub.

Previously been to the Masons Arms on Many Occasions. We know it can get very busy so always try and book. Spent over an hour trying to get someone to answer the phone to make a booking. Then turned up at 11:45 to near empty pub to be told we are old doing food if you have booked. Absolutely disgusting customer service. How do you book for food if no one answers the phone?

Such a lovely return to The Masons Arms. We had a great relaxed evening after a busy day at work was much needed. We were greeted at the door and shown straight to our table upstairs. All the staff were extremely pleasant, attentive but not too overbearing. Food came and was delicious and.plentiful, so much so we could not fit in a dessert. There was so much on the menu to choose from I could not decide !All the staff were so cheery and helpful it was great to see especially after the horrors the industry has gone through. Well done.Cant wait to return

This was not our first stay at the Masons Arms but will be our last.We stayed 2 nights in the Strawberry Bank. The welcome was non existent. The staff in the bar dismissive and rudeAt lunch time on the 15th the drain man arrived to clean the drains. The smell was disgustingOn the morning of our checkout we woke at 7 am to NO water! We were unable to flush the toilet, wash our hands etc. We called the emergency number and they were aware of the situation, I find it appalling they didn't think to take the time to inform their guests. At breakfast it was mentioned in passing that they were waiting on a delivery of water!! The staff found it amusing. We found the whole experience utterly disgusting. We checked out at 10 am, still no water and were charged £485.35, again no apology. We emailed individual Inns. Still waiting for their response. Shocking customer service

Wonderful find, great food, glorious views and excellent service. Best meal of our holiday, simple menu but all delicious. Generous portion of smoked salmon pate to start, which was very tasty followed by a wonderful steak pie. My husband had squid followed by really good local rump of lamb. Catered for dairy allergy and we enjoyed a very good bottle of malbec. Would highly recommend a meal here

We dined at the masons arms for lunch on Friday 21st May for my mother’s 60th birthday and all I can say is……amazing!! We are holidaying in bowness for the first time since 2 households are allowed to meet and this was our first meal out. We had a beautiful room to ourselves with amazing views, the food was amazing and the staff could not have been better. Nothing was a problem. If my second dining out experience in a year due to covid is as good as that then I will be a very happy man! Hats off to you masons arms! I wish you every success in the future!

We haven’t been in since the new owners have taken over and before lockdown. But we booked a table and took a walk down with the dog, we were met by a very friendly team who made us feel really welcomed. The food was amazing and so filling. The drinks also went down a treat. A real COVID safe environment the one way system worked really well everyone was spaced out, was a really relaxed atmosphere we can’t wait to go back! (Including the pup!)

For years i have visited TMA. Fathers Day, Birthdays, Christmas present booked room and weekends away with my wife.40 years all told. Then it happened and our experience in August2020 ended my love affair with the place.Under new management. Change of brewery. We were treated to a weekend away and very much looked forward to our visit.Yes, Covid. Social distancing but this was not the problem. We checked into our room and the first thing my wife said, i want to leave.Spiders webs between the cooker and cupboards full of flies.Dust on the bedhead, lampshades, i could go on.....The Manager was very busy this day due to the lack of staff but she agreed to the cancellation and the drinks we had already had, were courtesy of the house.Totally crestfallen we left our beloved Masons. Please!please!please! Management, get things right for the future.

Dinner booked for 2 October 2020. Hadn't visited in 20 years. Allocated a table against a wall in main bar which was really for 3 and unsuitable for 2. Felt an earlier group of 3 had rejected it as they were dining in a bay window at at table for 2. Food was standard pub food fare. Service good. But decoration and ornaments very dated; could do with a refurb which includes removing copious wiring tacked to the walls. Just felt the Mason's Arms hasn't moved on with its market leading competitors

A wonderful pub in wonderful surrondings. 1st day spent walking locally which was great, especially Gummer's How. 2nd day went up to the Keswick area which was an easy drive. Evenings spent in the bar next to a roaring fire eating very good food and enjoying excellent wine and beers. Very dog friendly! Breakfast in the bar was enjoyable. Great room split on 2 levels.

Me and My partner visited earlier that day for a drink and said to a lady and gentlemen called Sam and Helen that we really wanted to come for dinner but we told they was fully booked but would try and accommodate and they did that exactly was told there was a time available for us as they managed to do a little move around and we explained we really wanted a table next to the fire and was told by Sam he would do best to try and get this for us . Then phoned and said he had managed to get us the table we wanted so they had both gone above and beyond couldn’t have asked for me . Soon as we got there the service we received all night was on point and the food was just delicious!!!! Couldn’t recommend this place anymore will definitely be returning. Well done Team !!! XI had Cheese and Onion pie and my partner had Wildbore and Damson Sausage and the Sticky Toffee pudding was like non you had tried before .

The wrong order was taken for my partner, so, by the time that was rectified, I had finished my course. My (very expensive) steak was tiny and chewy- I cut about a quarter of it out. Thanks to putting damp logs on the fire, everyone left with stinking clothes, like the pre-smoking ban days. Very disappointing.

Went for dinner last night with my husband and little boy. We were seated upstairs in a large room with one other table. Although we were away from the main bar area we were certainly not forgotten about service wise. Attentive and unfussy servive. My starter of satay chicken with mango chutney was sublime and my cheese pie with potatoes and vegetables was delicious but extremely filling. None of us had room for pudding as the portions are large. We all enjoyed out meals and would definately eat here again. There are lots of dishes on the menu we would like to try.

Well I won't be going back ,the food was awful ...the tomato ,basil and pesto soup had a horrible sharp but sugary sweet taste...the sandwich that came with it had the cheapest bright yellow " butter "on. ,a maximum of one slice of ham and the cheapest mustard . My 4 year old grandson could have made a better sandwich ! My husband had pie which had hardly any meat in it and the gravy was unusual tasting ( to say the least ) and sweet . I've had far superior microwave meals ! The toilets which were always an asset to the pub had gone downhill too.

As soon as we walked through the door the staff were welcoming and very attentive. The food was lovely and good value for money. We sat outside which is a great little sun trap for those rare sunny days in the Lake District. We would high recommend and we will definitely be back .

We have been here many times over the years and love it. Dropped in for a drink last week. Wooooah! £9.80 for a Prosecco and a pint of cider shandy is the same price as a pint of cider - about £7. So by that maybe a pint of lemonade is also £7? I’m sure many people stop for a drink while walking in the beautiful lakes but next time we might find another stopping point. Although living in the North East maybe we just have cheaper pubs up here??!!

Cold and smelled of dogs on arrival. Waited ages to be served and the waitress was more interested on who was at the bar rather than taking our table order for 10 people. Food was very salty and the steak pie in particular was terrible. Every meal as standard/basic or frozen style food. The whole place is run down and miserable. We went off trip advisor reviews as well on a visit to the area and wished we hadn’t. Go to The Pheasant Inn down the road at Allithwaite instead that was lovely food and fab service.
