After a long walk, (you know when your legs are like jelly and you're a bit delirious), the Three Hares Cafe was a caramel-packed safehaven. I've visited hundreds of cafes (and reviewed a fair few on here) and the negative reviews are a little baffling. Yes, the scones look burnt but they are airy light and a welcome companion to a brew. Funnily enough, they probably know how to make a decent scone given the expertise across the road at the Black Bull Inn. It is a small cafe, only a few tables, that doubtless gets filled quickly but Sedbergh has alternatives nearby if you're stuck. They nailed my preference for a caramel slice (90% oozing caramel) and the pies and other bits we took home all hit the spot. Special mention for their donuts. They look like giant charred cannon balls that ooze jam. Glorious when warmed up.

If you had walked the river in anticipation of the charming sounding Three Hares - prepare for disappointment A deli is stretching a point .. it is not . Nor on the day I visited was it a bakery A basket of burnt - not caught .. BURNT fruit scones in an open basket on display in direct line to be coughed on . No deli bits for say a picnic ! A few undercover tired looking cakes . Terrible coffee . Indifferent staff . No seating . It has monopoly on the little high street - needs to do better .

We travelled about an hour especially to visit the ‘cafe’, however the premises are now a bakery only ie take out. We purchased 2 sandwiches for £5 each, which on reflection had been sat in chiller for quite a time; both lacked flavour and had no finesse to them (large piece of smoked mackerel with tiny bit of watercress and horseradish dressing). Just really disappointing and expensive.

Stopped here before a walk in the area and had a wonderful lunch - soup with fantastic sandwiches. Great gluten free choice. I had ham, cheese and avocado - it was one of the best sandwiches I've had since having to eat gluten free. Lots of cakes too - I had to choose one to take away as I was so full but I can confirm also delicious when eaten later! Lovely cafe, great atmosphere.

We took time out from our busy schedule to go here as a treat whilst in the area working. The menu was very limited, no sign of the lovely pastries the bf remembers them having, and the coffee was not good. Also, the service was not at all friendly and they were late to open. Following our disappointing visit, the bf assured me it used to be 'Top Notch'. Not any more.

I was here in late December 2019 when most other cafes were closed. the place was rammed! However I am sure this was not only because of lack of anywhere else to go. Those of us who ordered food really enjoyed the quality of the ingredients and the imaginative sandwich filling etc. was much appreciated. However one of the group had coffee and said it was awful. I didn't have this myself so cannot confirm.Tthe tea was fine.

The Three Hares used to be a firm favourite and I would have given it 5 stars, but things have changed and it’s a real shame. Now the menu is limited and without the pizazz and style it used to have. The food used to be varied, quirky and of a high standard, but The owners have opened a second business across the road and now the cafe only offers soup, sandwiches, sausage rolls and limited cakes. I’m not even sure the bread is still cooked by them. If you’ve never been before then you will probably think it’s a great place and thoroughly enjoy it.

Extremely poor service, especially when the place was 2/3 empty on a December Friday afternoon, sandwiches made with no butter in them - very dry, no menu’s available on the tables at all, no chalk board price list other than coffees and finally VERY EXPENSIVE! When asking for the bill we were informed at the till that they wanted £18.40 for 2 ham sandwiches, 2 mince pies, 1 coffee and 1 tea.......paid and left never to return, obviously in the business of ripping off tourists.

The sandwiches were amazing (rare breed ham thick cut in a fresh baked by the owner, and an English mustard mayonnaise) roll for me and ham and avocado (I know) for my chum. Washed down with a pot of Earl Grey and some ginger beer. The atmosphere was busy but very friendly. It wa too warm for soup, but the marrow soup smelled very good indeed. Not your usual high street café. Their is a German influence here and it is reflected in the excellent baking. The toasted teacakes had a pleasant spicy taste and I noted that much emphasis was placed on local products. We visited The Three Hares while the monthly artisan market was on so the place was bustling. This didn’t daunt the couple running it who juggled selling to people who popped in for bread and buns with customers at tables. Sedbergh is a small town with only one true Main Street, but there are a few good restaurants. I have to say though that the Three Hares is excellent for morning coffee or afternoon tea. The coffee is good and there are unusual soups changed on a daily basis. The day I visited, there was a broccoli soup on offer. It sounds unlikely but it was absolutely lovely. This is a restaurant we have visited on two occasions and we think they have slightly missed the point. Those coming to this restaurant are invariably, as we were wet through and cold and so it is not appreciated when they leave the entrance door wide open. It's only a small place and used to be the bakery, so it's basically only the size of a shop and so we weren't more than a few feet from the door and became colder than when we entered, if that could be possible. I had the soup, which was great and was served not too hot or too cold. My partner had a ham sandwich and I felt very sorry for him. My soup cost under £4 and with a slice of bread was good value for money, my partner wanted a ham sandwich and paid £6+ for a slice of bread cup in half with a slice of ham. This was possibly the smallest sandwich I have ever seen and for the price was astonishingly poor value. I wish they had told him they had run out of bread and adjusted the price, or maybe they think that one slice is enough to make a sandwich, I don't know. I'm sure that there are some good dishes served here, but no guarantee you won't leave almost as hungry as you arrived as my partner did.

Cups, saucers plates etc. We found 2 empty tables both still full of used cups and saucers etc. We were not greeted at all by any of the staff. We sat down none of the staff made any eye contact. In fact we were ignored. They seemed to be in complete disarray. Yes they were busy but surely not too busy to even speak to us and say they would be with us shortly. They just kept their heads down. So after a 10 minute wait we got up and left obviously they didn’t want our custom. That won’t be a problem in the future we definitely won’t be back. Our money will spend anywhere.

We found the Three Hares a few year ago by accident on our return from holiday and it found it was a lovely place with good food and friendly staff. Since then we have made a point of making a detour from the motorway to go here for lunch. How things have changed! We arrived here at around 2.45pm which was hardly that late on a Saturday at the end of the summer holidays. The young woman who greeted us informed us that they were low on food (which was no doubt true as the bakery display that you can also make take away purchases from was nearly empty) so weren't cooking any more but could still serve sandwiches, which was fine with us as that and a drink is all we were after. She offered us menus but before we could sit down the older woman with red hair (just so anyone can identify and therefore avoid her exemplary customer service skills!!!) barked that they were no longer serving food in a very curt and rude manner, no apology, pleasantness or offer of anything to take away with us. How the two tables marked up as reserved were going to get on when they arrived is anyone's guess? Clearly someone had had enough for the day and wanted to go home, that however is no excuse for that sort of service or attitude, courtesy doesn't cost anything but if she worked for my business her lack of would cost her a job! I can't stress how rude this woman was but can only say that we were so stunned by it that this is one of the few times I've ever written a review on anywhere. I can't review the food as we didn't get so much as a sniff of that. It's such a shame as we had really rated this place until now and doubt we will ever go back.

Our visit to the Three Hares Café was very disappointing, the greeting that we received upon our arrival was very curt and borderline rude, we believed we were on time but the waitress passed comment that the table "had just about been held", the café wasn't full so we didn't believe this was necessary. Our food order was taken promptly, we were offered a good variety of breads for our sandwiches, 3 ordered sandwiches, the sandwich fillings were plenty but the ham sandwich was overpowered by too much mustard mayo, the bread was just okay. This is a down to earth top quality friendly cafe that welcomes dogs and "understands" muddy boots whilst offering super food and excellent value for money. There is a car park within 100 yards. Made our first visit on Saturday morning. Staff friendly and helpful, coffee very good (strong and well-flavoured) and very tempting baking on offer. All this and quality newspapers on hand for customers to read. So good that we went back for more late in the afternoon.

Gorgeous brunch and delicious cakes to take away for later. Staff are excellent. I’m sure we will come again

Rustic charm. Excellent food, best venison I’ve had in a long time. Service felt a little rushed, taking plates away as the last mouthful of cheese went in! Overall very good and have already recommended to friends.

Just had lunch at this lovely cafe. The soups were delicious, I shall be attempting to make beetroot and horseradish soup when I get home but it won't be as good as the Three Hares I'm sure. Husband's steak pie was much enjoyed and my cheese platter was fresh and came with salad bits and homemade piccalilli. The cafe bakes it' s own bread, which is served with the soup and platters. The cakes looked delicious but we were too full to try them, maybe on the way back home ..... coffee good too. There was also an extensive wine list and choices of pump and bottled beers. The cafe is, not surprisingly, very popular and fortunately we had booked for Sunday lunchtime.

We called into the cafe on a day visit to Sedbergh. This is a lovely cafe situated on the high street with a great atmosphere. We were planning to just have a coffee but once inside and seeing all the fabulous home made bread and cakes we knew ‘just a coffee’ would not be possible. The list of cakes seemed to be endless but with the choice of a pumpkin crunch and chocolate brownie we were not disappointed. This accompanied with good coffee was all we needed for the start of our walk on the fells. A great cafe, with great service and food and one we would definitely return too! Highly recommend a visit....oh and dog friendly too....simply perfect!

No matter if it is luncheon the day, coffee and cake in the afternoon, or dinner at the weekend, The Three Hares is an absolute gem. The food is superb and highly inventive. Their ethos behind what they do when you read their menu is admirable. Worth a detour off the motorway.

Last Saturday we took over the whole place for a birthday party. The 6 course tasting menu was an amazing array of local foods, presented to showcase the different flavours and textures. Everyone of the 21 of us (from 7 - 70) cleared their plates.

One horrible cold wet day in January we decided to go over to Sedbergh and The Three Hares Café for lunch. This is just over 100 mile round trip for us, so that should tell you that we recommend this place.

This place is a real find. Somehow we were lucky enough to get the last table for dinner by calling on the day and we are so glad we did. It's small and friendly and you can tell the people who run it take great pride and work super hard to keep it in shape. An unusual and varied menu, this isn't your usual pub / cafe grub so it's wise to go hungry and feeling adventurous. Excellent wine list. Go!

Popular cafe with artisan bread and cake sales too. Food was quality but a bit too frilly for my taste. However, cafe always full of people drinking good coffee and chatting, whenever I pass by.

Great food, great wine selection and amazing coffee+dessert. We had a great time and our dogs seems already know where to go when we parked our car in Sedbergh.

We managed to get a table for dinner just before Christmas and had a stunning meal. The food is locally sourced and imaginative and we all thoroughly enjoyed it. Best to book for their evening meals and probably for lunches too if you don't want to be disappointed. Sedbergh is a small town so to find a restaurant offering such a creative and delicious menu was a wonderful surprise. Staff friendly and helpful into the bargain.

Cold and smelled of dogs on arrival. Waited ages to be served and the waitress was more interested on who was at the bar rather than taking our table order for 10 people. Food was very salty and the steak pie in particular was terrible. Every meal as standard/basic or frozen style food. The whole place is run down and miserable. We went off trip advisor reviews as well on a visit to the area and wished we hadn’t. Go to The Pheasant Inn down the road at Allithwaite instead that was lovely food and fab service.

Well I won't be going back ,the food was awful ...the tomato ,basil and pesto soup had a horrible sharp but sugary sweet taste...the sandwich that came with it had the cheapest bright yellow " butter "on. ,a maximum of one slice of ham and the cheapest mustard . My 4 year old grandson could have made a better sandwich ! My husband had pie which had hardly any meat in it and the gravy was unusual tasting ( to say the least ) and sweet . I've had far superior microwave meals ! The toilets which were always an asset to the pub had gone downhill too.
