Had this place on my list for a while and was looking forward to our dinner there. However, the meal was disappointing, the vibe and decor was super basic and the music too loud and off putting. You would expect greater care and attention to detail from a Michelin star restaurant. We went for the 6 course tasting menu which left us hungry, first ever time I've left hungry post 6 courses, so you can imagine how small the dishes were. The only thing enjoyable from all the dishes was the dessert. Overpriced and underwhelming are 2 words to best describe the tasting menu. I'd have given this 3 stars if not for the rude and pretentious service in the lounge from the senior staff and bar tender. Given our experience started in the lounge, it was not a warm welcome. You'd much rather check out the numerous other Michelin pubs and restaurants in the area for a nice meal out.

We had high hopes, but unfortunately were let down. Service challenges: This was largely driven by negative experiences with the bartender and one of the senior front of house staff. The rest of the staff, especially Matthew, were very lovely and helpful. After arriving, we were escorted to the lounge for a drink. The bartender came over to take the drinks order and one of our guests ordered the margarita, but wanted it stronger, so with an extra shot of tequila inside it. The bartender looked annoyed that he was being asked to modify the drink and refused saying he was legally not allowed to put an extra shot into the drink. This is untrue as the UK regulation for Standard Pours and Measures does not cover this request. And given it was the very first drink of the night, the "serving responsibly" clause does not apply either. When the senior front of house staff came to take our food order. When being asked to select between the 6 course and 10 course, we asked him what the differences would be between the 2. To which the unhelpful and serious reply was "4 courses" and then went on to explain the maths of it. Rather than explaining what dishes we would be missing out and giving us some meaningful guidance about which one to consider. Having just been to L'enclume, and other Michelin star restaurants, where you can select between wine pairing options for e.g. a standard wine pairing Vs a premium wine pairing. We asked the same waiting staff member if there were options for the wine pairing. To which he looked annoyed and said "There can only ever be one wine pairing". So we were off to a terrible start. The meal: The food was largely enjoyable and of a high standard. However, At £95 for a 6 course tasting, we left hungry. The main of the beef was a tiny tiny portion, it was just one small medallion sized piece. We have definitely had better 1* 6 course tasting menus for £65. So, this was poor value for money. At the end of the meal, we went back to the lounge for our cheese course. We wanted to order some port with it, but we couldn't find the port in the sweet / fortified wine section. So, when the same bar tender came to take our order, we asked if they had port. He looked at us as if we were stupid and said "Well you need to look at the Bar menu". Disappointed overall as we were really looking forward to the meal. As a result, we wouldn't be recommending this experience.

We were very disappointed that the restaurant, we ate in the conservatory, has gone minimalistic. Not only has it lost the ambiance, but that nothing now absorbed sounds. It was all right when we started the meal having gone early, but by the time we finished and the restaurant was full we could not hear each other speak. We understood that the menu changed recently. It was not as good as the old one.

Lovely hotel, lovely rooms. Ate in the Source, the Michelin restaurant. Amazing food but atmosphere and decor wasn't amazing. Had music playing such as Paul Weller, Ocean Colour Scene, Fleetwood Mac. Although I enjoy that music, it sounded like a radio station and didn't fit the required ambience. No tablecloths, very stripped back. Breakfast was also very nice. Nicer ambience than in the evening meal area. Also, we were there for 10th wedding anniversary. Lacked any real personal touch. Even had a birthday card from the hotel in our room for someone else, but nothing for us. That said, we enjoyed it.

A beautiful meal. Having dined at other Michelin star restaurants this is definitely one of the best. A great atmosphere, the tasting menu and wine pairing felt like a well thought out magical journey of food and drink! Sommelier was brilliant (UTV) and we especially loved the music playlist. One to add to your visit list. Could’ve ate the bread with every course! Stand outs - Crown Prince Custard and the Venison. Thank you for a wonderful evening.

We came yesterday for our 11th anniversary and we were greeted with champagne and snacks in the beautifully decorated lounge area. We ordererd some delicious cocktails and before we knew it was time to go in the dining area. Our waiter José was very attentive and had a great deal of knowledge (not to mention his funny sense of humour). We had the tasting menu and it was truly the best food experience I've ever come across, Chef Jack and his team catered to our needs without a hitch and delivered masterpiece after masterpiece. The only downside is that every other food I'll eat after this will taste bland! We also ordered some wine with the sommelier Jess and I have to say her recommendations were spot on, she describes wines very thoroughly and is also very friendly! Everyone else we met was also very friendly and nothing was too much. We'd recommend SOURCE to anyone wanting to experience food out of this world and we'll definitely come back!

Source at the Gilpin 5*Hotel. Rough edges in service - orders lost, taxi timing screw up - were why they lost a star. And being made to feel, as someone having the à la carte menu and our own wine pairings, that we were second class citizens compared to the 8 courses with dedicated wines at more than twice the price we paid. The obsequious fawning of the 12 year old sommelier over ignorant diners was also annoying. Muzak too loud was another fault. I will say that much of the food was excellent - I had quail then beef and a lovely rice pudding for my 3 courses.

Gilpin have a huge team of chefs working in a kitchen that's on display to visitors from the footpath up to reception. The waiting lounge is welcoming, relaxed and comfortable. We were not only asked about dietary requirements but as my wife is vegetarian they took an active interest to explore exactly what that meant to her and understand the details of what Preya would be happy eating (eggs, dairy, gelatine etc). This then allowed them to mix and match items from both menus (plant based and 'normal') appropriately. Although there were a couple of mishaps through the evening they were dealt with professionally and respectfully. As such we feel we can't fault them. We went for the tasting menu which was superb. It was well presented and full of flavour. Each dish felt like something we would not have been served anywhere else and likely never will be! Neither of us could fault the tasting menu. Even the meat dishes felt like a new experience to me which is often not the case. Sometimes I have felt like the real imagination & effort goes into the plant based alternatives which end up being more exciting but that was not the case here! In this menu it felt like more thought had been put into every dish. Lots of technique was on show here. Really enjoyed our night with Source at Gilpin where we were made to feel special, extremely well looked after and special. Food was thoroughly enjoyable and with a touch of luxury.

Dined here (Source) during an average 3 night stay at the hotel. The hotel knew via our booking we were here to celebrate my partners 50th. Nothing was done on the night for this (not even a happy birthday on a plate) and nor did the staff on the night ask if we we’re celebrating anything. We opted for the wine pairings so meal was £400. Was all excellent with wines matching well. Would have liked to have taken away details of the matched wines on a menu card. Other niggle. Booked for 7pm and invited to the bar for 6:30 for pre dinner drinks. We we’re blissfully ignored by the bar staff for 25 minutes and had to pin someone down for two glasses of champagne, not great but they didn’t charge for them. If you’re going to invite someone for pre dinner drinks at least have the courtesy to take a prompt order. I’d recommend the restaurant but doubtful we’d revisit given the frustrations above.

We visited Source at the Gilpin to sample their tasting menu. Source is meant to be a Michelin star restaurant. We had such high hopes, having recently been taken over, this was the first Lake District menu the new chef had put together. We’ve visited quite a few Michelin star restaurants over the past few years and this was very poor, didn’t even come close to Michelin standard. The tasting menu was mostly fish, which we didn’t mind in theory, with duck in between the fish dishes and the desserts. The duck was awfully cooked. In fact, it wasn’t cooked properly at all. Hard to even cut, and the fat wasn’t rendered at all. We left some of this meal, which is shocking given the quality it should be and the price you pay. The desserts were also very poor, as were the handmade chocolates afterwards - 2 chocolates in fact, no bigger than the size of a five pence piece. The menu states that cheese is offered as as additional course, which is absolutely fine, but during our meal this wasn’t even mentioned. As this was dubbed a Lake District menu, I asked where the ingredients were sourced from, assuming that the majority of the menu would be local. It wasn’t - most of the ingredients were from the south. Why wouldn’t you take advantage of the fantastic ingredients on your doorstep, especially as the name of the menu makes you think that’s what you’re getting. Unfortunately, we were extremely disappointed and won’t be going back. The couple on the table next to us complained about exactly the same courses as we did, and as they were staying there, they received money off their bill. We did not, no one followed up on our complaints during the evening. I would not recommend Source at the Gilpin in its current form, and it should not be a Michelin star restaurant.

Unfortunately not quite the exceptional experience we were anticipating. The staff were fabulous. They really new their stuff and were very good at their jobs. The choice on the menu was lacking. Two members of our party are not fish fans and this was made aware prior to arrival. They were not given alternatives so their “choice” was made for them. When the food arrived it was luke warm at best. The langoustine starter was very enjoyable, the cod main course was unfortunately not memorable. The cheese selection was excellent. When the bill arrived it just felt like we paid a lot of money for something that didn’t quite match up. On the plus side, the wine was very reasonably priced and the staff were great.

We recently dined here and were disappointed. At £120 for 6 courses and snacks I would expect Michelin quality ( in food and service) but that was sadly not the case. We were asked to arrive at 1900 for 1930 but were left sitting in the bar area with nothing more than a tiny bowl of nuts and olives until 1945 - by which time we were very hungry. The first course was a soy soaked cauliflower. Interestingly we’d had a cauliflower curry for supper the previous evening so I was looking forward to the stunning difference between the two. This one was effectively in a thai green curry sauce and I didn’t enjoy it. The sweetness of the scallop in the next course was obliterated in a bitter marmite tasting sauce and the cod was a little dry ( and when I looked at the 2inch long block of cod all I could think was that it was costing me £20). The service was also very slow which I think was being caused by a blockage in the kitchen as opposed to a lack of skill by the waiters although we did have to chase our drinks more than once as we didn’t do the wine pairing but ordered by the glass. All in all it felt a bit sloppy when you would expect rigour from a restaurant with a michelin star. Maybe this is because the chef who earned the star - Hrishikesh Desai - has moved onto pastures new. Sadly it seems he has taken his star with him.

Unfortunately we were left a little disappointed with our dining experience. The Michelin restaurant now has a new name & it also seems another new restaurant has opened at the hotel (knipe) so potentially some chef/management/ menu changes are underfoot and they are finding their feet. We have dined at a few Michelin restaurants and for us this just wasn’t the quality we were looking forward to. You are told to arrive 30 mins before your reservation for welcome drinks & nibbles but there are no drinks, you have to purchase your own. The tasting menu was only 6 courses + snacks (i appreciate this sounds alot but it isn’t for a Michelin tasting menu.) There was nothing overly creative on the menu and in honesty alot of the dishes were quite bland. The cod in particular was flavourless & chewy and every single one of my dishes was only luke warm, nothing was hot. The paired wines were ok (there was a delicious dessert wine!) There was no rapport with the staff, it was serve & go. We also had to get somebodys attention to order initial drinks as did the tables around us. All in all quite an average experience which is a shame and i wish we’d tried a different restaurant onsite.

We were staying at the Gilpin so booked into HRiSHi. We chose the 5 course menu. This consisted of nibbles, starter, main, dessert and coffee with two chocolates. The food was delightful, beautifully presented. The staff very friendly and efficient, though the wine waiter was slow in filling up our glasses so we did not ourselves, which we preferred to do anyway. Downsides We were told we were invited for drinks and nibbles at 7.45 for the 8.15 sitting. With other Michelin restaurants this means a glass of fizz and interesting quality nibbles. Here it meant you buy your own drinks at the bar and get a small plates of olives and nuts. Nothing special. The restaurant is in there rooms so there may be too many guests for one room but not enough to make any have a buzz or atmosphere. Finally, no amuse bouche or any little extras.

We went as couples to celebrate a couple of birthdays. It was a shame that it was in the evening so could not experience the views but the restaurant itself was lovely. We were led to the lounge where we had cocktails and choose our menu- we decided on the tasting menu. After booking the restaurant, I had informed them of my dietary restrictions but that message hadn’t got through to the restaurant and I found it embarrassing to discuss this with the maitre d’hotel in front of the others as it was not my doo and the focus was on me and not them . After some discussion , my menu was sorted and the service was done without a hitch and without a fuss but it should have been sorted before I arrived as it had with other restaurants - in a seamless way. The food was very good with good wines and the meal was a fabulous experience for us all and our Bulgarian waitress was excellent and very attentive.

MEAL BOOKED FOR MONTHS CANCELLED WITH DAYS NOTICE. The most UNPROFESSIONAL experience.Having organised a romantic weekend away - opting to stay at an exclusive AirBnB close to the Gilpin and dine at the Michelin star restaurant there - we received an email - that went into junk - less than a week before we were set to travel stating that our meal that had been booked for months had been cancelled. The reason was "travel rules and staff shortages" - meaning only resident meals would be honoured. The restaurant isn't closed, the establishment is merely acting divisively. First of all, there are no travel rules currently in place within the UK and second, isolation period has just been cut to five days meaning even if staff were off now, they won't be by the time of our reservation. This meal was gifted to my partner by me and all the other expensive elements of our trip are no longer cancellable. Disgusting and unprofessional service from a supposedly high class establishment. AVOID.

I booked the taster menu with wine pairings for my partner's birthday. We love our food and we both said, these were the best courses of food we've ever tried. Although each course looked small and delicate, 10 courses later we were extremely well-fed! Each dish was genuinely so tasty.I had told them our dietary requirements prior to booking, and they kindly accommodated for myself and my partner which was lovely. The staff were really knowledgeable and the whole experience was simply sublime. Thank you so much to everyone, it was an experience i won't forget.

Hrishi is the main Michelin starred restaurant at Gilpin Lodge - and is the USP for the hotel. The restaurant is located across the ground floor of the main building (it has a sister restaurant called Gilpin Spice in a nearby building). We had booked a two night stay at the hotel with dinner at Hrishi on the first night. We arrived in the cocktail lounge at 6.30 for drinks and nibbles. Very civilised - I almost expected Hercule Poirot and a cast of characters to join us. Staff are very much on the ball , and seamlessly take you in for dinner just at the right moment. There are several dining rooms all leaving from a hallway. Our room had 6 or 7 tables. We could see parts of the other rooms so we had all the buzz but still had that dinner party feel. We had the seven course tasting menu - superb. The food is (I’d say) 60% European fine dining and 40% Asian influence. It’s a great mix for a special occasion. There are wine pairings if you want them but we just had a bottle of wine. It’s not a cheap meal but at £95 for seven courses and bottles of wine under £35, we thought it was good value compared to some.By the time we’d had coffee in the lounge, we’d had three hours plus of great food in beautiful surroundings with friendly and efficient service that was perfectly paced. Divine

Had been looking forward to our third visit to Gilpins HRiSHi. Couldn't wait for the day. Quite understandable that the food was not the finished article as last time. But it spoilt the tone for me that the 'day before' phone call had become a brutal text, (slightly abbreviated)."Please arrive earlier if you'd like longer for apéritifs, but if you arrive later we may need to show you straight to your table. No-shows / cxl / amends less than 48 hrs prior to bookings incur fees of £75pp (dinner) / £25pp (afternoon tea)."They must be packing them in.

I’ve wanted to eat at this restaurant for at least two years and, as part of a week long dining tour of the Lakes, it was one that I was most looking forward to. Unfortunately it was a real disappointment, which is a bit gutting considering my expectations. On arrival my husband and I received a warm welcome at reception and were taken through to the champagne bar for an aperitif. We placed our order, received some nibbles and waited for our drinks. And waited. It was obvious the lady behind the bar was busy but when our drinks were eventually delivered by a lady who appeared to be the restaurant manager after a 15-20 minute wait, there was no apology or recognition of the delay.During our wait our food order had been taken. I’d previously informed the restaurant I had a food intolerance. I wasn’t asked about this when we ordered but five minutes later the waiter returned to reprimand me for not telling him about my intolerance when he’d asked. I pointed out that he hadn’t asked; he apologised and left to find out what menu items I would have to swap. No harm done at all but it was just a bit off and not the service I’d expect. So to dinner - still VERY excited about this and looking forward to the tasting menu with matched wines. The start was incredible - a mini cabbage bhaji that was bursting with flavour. From then on it was downhill - everything was just a bit average. The cooking was largely superb, as was the presentation, but the flavours were really lacking and missing the punch I had expected. A 24 hour cooked beef cheek was as tender as anything but had no depth of flavour. The two fish dishes had the skin left on, which wasn’t cooked, so it was just a flabby, leathery thing to saw through. The first dessert, a fine blackberry tart, was stunning but then was followed by a chocolate and pannacotta concoction where the main element was curdled and lumpy. On the plus side, the sommelier was superb, friendly and knowledgeable, and the wine pairings brought more flavour out of the dishes than they garnered on their own.So, would I go back? No.Did I think I received an experience aligned to the price? Unfortunately not. Would I recommend it? No.

Fantastic meal, staff were brilliant. We had the tasting menu and wine pairing, the truffle arancini were so very good. Tomato course was one of the freshest tasty dishes Ive eaten ! Was great as you could mixed courses with the plant based menu which I think was a great idea and gave some choice. Totally different atmosphere to Gilpin Spice so great to have 2 amazing restaurants at the same hotel

Hrishi was incredible - we were a party of 4 and have to say its one of the best meals i've had. We had the 8 taster menu with paired wine. Having eaten at Fat Duck, Sketch and others Hrishi is by no means a Fat Duck category but its in my top 3. Should have 2 star, and esp with the Covid challenges they did the owners proud. Well done all!!

The highlight of a long awaited short break after 18 months without a holiday ,and it was certainly worth the wait. We went for the tasting menu with matching wine flights and not only were the wines very interesting but also very generous in measure. The young sommelier Ben certainly knew his stuff with matching glass ware for each wine.Stand out courses the salmon and cod with an Italian white Pinot noir and Austrian Riesling respectively. Super experience. Whilst Ben gets a special mention all of the serving staff were excellent-friendly and unpretentious

We eat hear two years ago and it was very very good. With coming back for. What has happened. Covid 19In the past you had a good choice of dishes. Now 2 starters , mains and desert all very ordinary. Nothing special. Fish was Pollack and meat was chicken breast .The sauce with the chicken was far far too strong. Would kill any decent wine. The fish just ok nothing special at all. They serve everything with a big ta do real off all ingredients but just fails the taste test. The desert was semifredo I would have needed a hammer to cut it. I just left the desert it was so poor. We had Champaign to start with. We were given popcorn and olive. I asked for nuts of something else to go with the Champlain I was told that was all they had. This is not what you expect in a top hotel or restaurant. Down hill all the way. We go to Michelin star restaurants most months of the year from Fat Duck to Angela Hartnet. This is just very ordinary food A great pity as the service in the hotel is perfect breakfast very good indeed. Top 5 star just the restaurant lets it all down.

Gracias
