Loved our evening at Gilpin Source. Tasting menu but with 3 choices for starter, main and desert and a separate menu for those of us that had says we were pescatarian. Some good veggie options and with advanced notice you can get vegetarian or vegan menus. They also kindly remembered and dealt with the fact I can’t eat cheese or chocolate. The fact that this is a tasting menu but with an element of choice meant that we all got to pick dishes suited to our own taste. Every single course was spectacular, lovely attention to detail, fresh and delicious. The sommelier was very knowledgable and picked something suitable by the glass for each of our different requirements. Arrived at 6pm for drinks in the bar, promptly seated at 6:45 and we didn’t leave till after 10. Can’t recommend enough for a special night out.

One of our servers, Harry is an absolute asset to your establishment. Complimenting your restaurant and food with his service. The sommelier was also excellent his knowledge was great and let us take photos of the bottles we liked the most. We went for the whole tasting menu, with wine pairing. One vegetarian and one normal menu. The gin and tonic was the most interesting dish, the strawberry for dessert was amazing. The only dish we didn't enjoy was a almost oat based dessert from the normal menu, the oats were extremely hard. Great experience with talented bartenders and. Beautiful bar area. Being local in surprised we have never been, excited to try the sister restaurant for the a la carte menu.

We had an incredible dining experience at Source in the Gilpin Hotel, opting for the Source Menu with paired wines. The venue itself is stunning, offering a perfect blend of luxury and comfort. The customer service was exceptional attentive and knowledgeable without being intrusive. And the food? Absolutely sensational! Every dish was beautifully presented, full of flavor, and paired perfectly with the wines. It’s clear that a lot of thought and care goes into every detail. Highly recommend for anyone looking for a top-tier dining experience.

Excellent food in a Michelin starred restaurant dinner menu with so many courses and all amazing, even the bread was delicious. Great service, fantastic staff, the wine sommelier really knew her wines! Really couldn't fault it. Our meal was complimentary (prize) so only had the drinks to pay for which are pricey, but a lovely dining experience.

We were apprehensive after reading some of the reviews… but our experience was absolutely fantastic. The service was impeccable, Elle our waitress was brilliant, the long haired barman was also great. The food was sublime, divine, totally deserving of the Michelin star. The lobster, duck, rice pudding and chocolate dessert will be remembered for a long time. We both agree, the best Michelin star restaurant that we have visited. Also, the bread… wow. Just wow. Well done.

I booked here for my first anniversary with my partner, I expected sparkle and instead I found mediocre food disguised as starred food. We arrive at the hotel, and already in the parking lot a swamp of water between the car and the path to the restaurant... oh well! we enter, we are made to sit at the bar, we take two cocktails, we decide on the type of menu and after 40 minutes we are made to sit at the table: in a damp, cold corner, a wobbly table, and dirty tablecloths, all in a very vintage little room. the menu begins, paired with wines; very kind but inexperienced staff, the girl who served the wine must have learned the chant by heart, but she doesn't know how to answer a single question, and during dinner they forget to serve us one of the courses. the food was well presented, almost everything was cooked to perfection, but some combinations didn't work or were too forced, I also pointed out about one of the meat dish and I received a half-hearted smile from the waitress at the table. no music, few people, there was no conviviality. I was definitely not happy with the dinner, neither with the food nor with the service. Really disappointed. Anyway at least the table, change it or put a wedge underneath, how hideous is a wobbly table.

Sadly, it was a very disappointing experience at Source for me and my partner. This was booked by my partner as a surprise for my 33rd birthday. He knew I'd been to the restaurant previously when it was run by a different chef and named Hrishi. Knowing that I'd had an amazing experience at Hrishi, my boyfriend booked us in at Source. The night began pretty dreadfully when we sat at our table for 50 minutes before being served any food. I had to ask where the food was before being told the restaurant was busy. There was a lack of any proactive communication from the staff about what was creating such a delay. And from this point, the wait between courses was inconsistent and very slow. We chose the 10 course tasting menu which seemed very reasonable for only £120 per person. We were seated at our table at 19: 05 and by 22.10, we still hadn't been served all our food. We were so bored by the food and wait between courses that we decided to leave at that point. The staff here are polite and friendly, but something seemed to go disastrously wrong in the restaurant when we went. The food was aesthetically pretty in its presentation and tasted good. However, the taste fell below what you'd expect for a Michelin star restaurant. It seems strange because there are so many rave reviews for this place. All the trusted sources of review give this place great write ups. Personally, I can't see what the hype is. Perhaps it was just a bad night when we dined there. I'm not sure. Either way, it tainted our stay somewhat. We were guests of the hotel. We had to let the staff of the hotel know how we felt as we didn't want to pay for such a tragic and disappointing experience. My partner spoke to the Deputy Ops Manager and he kindly said we wouldn't be charged for the meal. This was much appreciated, but a shame as we'd much rather have had a great meal as big foodies. If you're coming to the Gilpin, my suggestion would be to dine at it's sister restaurant, Spice. It's a pan Asian restaurant also in the hotel. The food and service is far better!

We celebrated an anniversary dinner here. The food was very good but did not “wow” us considering it’s a Michelin restaurant. And the staff was really nice but we felt the service was missing the “finer” touches one would expect from this caliber of a place. No one mishap was major but it was a culmination of the experience that was a bit lacking. For example, no one acknowledged our anniversary even though we informed them when we booked. Another example was when a waiter asked if we wanted to see the wine menu when we had already ordered the wine pairing and were already enjoying our first pour. There are a few other examples like this. Overall we enjoyed it but expected a bit more.

A fantastic experience overall. Food top class and clearly created by an intelligent chef. Menu was creative but not overly out of the ordinary, most dishes were spot on and well timed. Good use of seasonal and foraged produce. A couple of observations though, the lobster dish was beautiful but would have benefited with a knife rather than a spoon as it was difficult to eat. The sweetcorn parfait was rather hard and fired across the plate when trying to cut into it otherwise a perfect dinner. Service wise, a couple of missed upsell opportunities, service staff cleared the empty glasses and bottle but never offered more. We would definitely have bought more drinks if asked. Lastly, one strange thing, when the service staff explained the dishes I felt ignored, they were explaining everything to my wife, facing and looking at her but not me. It didn’t affect the enjoyment but it was just quite unusual. Thank you to all involved, it was a fabulous evening and a great experience. Highly recommended.

We visited Source to celebrate my partner’s 50th. We always treat each other to a Michelin star meal on our birthdays, as well as anniversaries and other special occasions. This was our first visit to Source. The GOOD: The food was excellent; the quality of the ingredients and the skills in preparing and assembling the dishes resulted in small but perfectly formed courses which ranged from the just great to the truly sublime. The BAD: The portions were incredibly small. This allowed for the chef’s skills to be showcased in constructing the most delicate of minuscule courses, but we left very hungry. We were also baffled the first 3 courses (of 10) were actually one course consisting of a trio of canapés (that would normally come before the actual courses). I wouldn’t have minded paying more for slightly larger portions for at least some of the principal dishes (John Dory, Cumbrian beef). The cost of producing this meal is mainly in the time and skill needed, which would be the same if they offered marginally larger (20-30%) meat and/or fish for an extra £20-30. We’re healthy, active, slender individuals, we weren’t expecting to pig out on 10 large courses. But we’re both over 6’ and the meal was clearly sized for the frail 4’6” 90-yo lady at the next table. The wine pairings were mediocre. All wines were extremely young, and - especially with some dishes - something older would have been more apt. I suppose we should at least appreciate the consistency between the minuscule portions of food and the tiny amount of wine we were served. Again, we weren’t looking to get drunk; I’m usually the one asking the sommelier to limit the wine I get poured as I’m a bit of a lightweight… not this time! The setting was a cacophony of questionable choices in an environment which would have otherwise been delightful. We were sat next to a fake fireplace which wouldn’t have been out of place in a suburban all-you-can-eat carvery. The many artificial flower displays - albeit of good quality - were also out of place at a restaurant serveing such (tiny) exquisite food (FYI, flowers at the entrance were real). The UGLY: The service was even more disappointing. The attitude displayed by the sommelier and one of the waiting staff was poor and - frankly - uncalled for (FYI, we never “triggered” with comments on the small pours). Several times we received the wine after the food, which was completely unacceptable. Also, for the beef, we were provided with non-matching glasses for the same wine (shouldn’t have been hard to get right as it was only 2 of us) As we always treasure our visits to special restaurants, I like to take pictures of the food; I’m aware it’s uncouth, so I do it quickly and discreetly. I love looking back at these pictures and remembering the food, flavours and experiences. But clearly one of the waiting staff was extremely unhappy with this habit of mine; she remarked disapprovingly several times, which made me very uncomfortable (it reminded me of the 2022 movie “The Menu” where the pretentious staff forbid customers from taking pictures of the food…) In fairness, I must say a different member of staff was extremely accommodating at the start, so much so that she disclosed she’s a photographer herself. Unfortunately she disappeared early and we were left with the very icy waitress who did not approve! We’ve had questionable attitudes elsewhere in the past (Alain Ducasse’s venues in Paris spring to mind…), but you don’t expect to be looked down upon in a Lake District restaurant. We expect professional service which is also warm and welcoming, but we most definitely did not get that after our lovely photographer waitress left us. In CONCLUSION: I'm afraid I can’t recommend Source. By the time the more “substantial” courses arrived, we knew there was a major problem with the portion sizes, we disconnected from the whole experience and started discussing what we’d order once back at our hotel. Some of the staff spoiled the evening for us, and some cheap elements of the decor really let the place down. Such a shame.

This evening four of us thoroughly enjoyed the 6 course tasting menu. All of us enjoyed every course immensely and we were equally happy with the service, which was professional and informed, yet relaxed. Stand out dishes were the john dory and poached rhubarb, but all were exceptional. I cannot remember the last time that I have been out for dinner where everyone enjoyed every dish to the extent that we did. I would thoroughly recommend.

Once again, an immensely enjoyable visit to Gilpin and always a wonderful welcome to this special place. The manicured gardens have matured beautifully, and the specimen trees are in full bloom, the sun was shining, and an alfresco aperitif beckoned. Loved the choice of 6 or 10 course tasting menu, opted for the indulgent10 courses. The sirloin amuse bouche starter was amazing and perfectly complemented by the sea bream and veal sweetbread. The highlight was John Dory with asparagus, wild garlic and potato. If anything, a larger portion of this would have been welcomed. All in all an extremely pleasant evening with a friendly service in one of most special places in the English Lake District.

A mixed bag. Random gripe: Initial emails from the restaurant suggest your booked time allows for 30 minutes in the lounge, but the final email sent a day before arrival contradicted this. Comms need to be consistent on this. Food: Started fairly average for a restaurant of this quality, building into very good by the John Dory fish course (beautifully done with fresh garden peas and asparagus) and really strong by the desserts (cracking rice pudding / sesame dish - easily 2* quality). However: 1. In a £120 tasting menu, you can’t serve three canapés as three of the ten courses. These should be served separately to the menu and given to both 6 and 10 course diners. Same goes for petit fours - where are they? 2. Fine to do a bread course; but don’t serve it with the lobster. We were 5/10 courses in within 30 minutes of arrival! Way too fast. When we asked the kitchen to slow down they were obliging however and got the pacing right thereafter. 3. A bit of a shame to not have a birthday recognised that was mentioned twice before arrival - sticking a candle in something (petit fours cake perhaps?) or a piped chocolate plate is an easy win. Service: Staff were all very friendly, but some training needed. Took 15 minutes to be asked for an aperitif. Cutlery missing for certain dishes. Somm absolutely nowhere in sight after wine was ordered (we had to pour our own most of the time). I do feel bad for him as he was doing a lot of serving - would suggest hiring a second somm and keeping that team separate. No offer of a cheese course which apparently exists and we would have taken. Atmosphere: Pretty lacking due to multiple room structure. With diners being moved through so quickly (why? There aren’t two seatings and the wing we were sat in was almost empty by 9pm) we felt quite lonely by the end, albeit servers were friendly and became more attentive at that point. Overall: 7.3/10. We had a lovely evening and this is a classic 1*, but feel no need to go back. Source needs to be careful as some talented cooking is being let down by haphazard service (and meanness on the menu items that are the easy crowd pleasers at the start and end of the meal).

The food is delicious however the six course menu is tiny - we were all young women on the table and all were left hungry. The service and the bill however were horrific. Long story short I was charged £54 for a glass of wine that I didn't order and that was off and sent back to the kitchen. The management refused to take the charge off the bill which had a couple other errors on it. The sommelier showed up towards the end of the meal and was most unhelpful. A pity as the food itself was great and a good value (just not enough of it).

Dont do it!! Horrendous service!! Id rather have eaten at the local pub! My hobby is food & eating in Michelin restaurants… well today was a NEW michelin experience for all the wrong reasons… upon arrival my reservation couldn’t be found (despite my partner producing the receipt), so I was “rushed” from that moment on. I wasn’t given a pre drink (even though those arriving prior to me who had the same reservation time did), I was left waiting for 20mins, then seated and served 6 dishes in 40mins without a single explanation of any dish. At this point I complained, the service did get better, but our server made a fair few sarcastic comments!! The manager didn’t even bother, despite being on the floor all night to check on our complaint! I made it clear the service wasn’t being paid; I think they saw this as a good will “gesture” 🤦🏼♀️🤦🏼♀️ Fortunately, we did Lake Road Kitchen (a much better Michelin - 14 courses in 5hrs experience - blew my mind!) on Friday night, so our celebratory weekend wasn’t spoiled!! Awful service!! Shocking! Don’t do it

Today was a terrible experience. Although the food was of good quality, the service was a mess. Today is my wife’s birthday. Originally, the restaurant promised to prepare a small dessert with happy birthday written on it to celebrate, but when the meal was completed, it was not served, just asked us to go to the lounge to continue, but when we left, no one arrange a seat for us. When we stood in the corridor at a loss, no one from the restaurant staff came to assist. As we didn’t want to waste time anymore, we asked them why the promised birthday dessert disappeared. They only gave me a copy of menu with some greeting words as compensation, and then waited for the bill in the corridor. We have been to many Michelin-rated restaurants in the past, and it was the first time I had to pay the bill standing up. After that, no one took the initiative to find our coats. Finally, I found them among a pair of messy clothes. Looking at the Michelin ratings, the UK has become more relaxed, and restaurants like this can become The one recommended by Michelin really shocked me.

Had this place on my list for a while and was looking forward to our dinner there. However, the meal was disappointing, the vibe and decor was super basic and the music too loud and off putting. You would expect greater care and attention to detail from a Michelin star restaurant. We went for the 6 course tasting menu which left us hungry, first ever time I've left hungry post 6 courses, so you can imagine how small the dishes were. The only thing enjoyable from all the dishes was the dessert. Overpriced and underwhelming are 2 words to best describe the tasting menu. I'd have given this 3 stars if not for the rude and pretentious service in the lounge from the senior staff and bar tender. Given our experience started in the lounge, it was not a warm welcome. You'd much rather check out the numerous other Michelin pubs and restaurants in the area for a nice meal out.

We had high hopes, but unfortunately were let down. Service challenges: This was largely driven by negative experiences with the bartender and one of the senior front of house staff. The rest of the staff, especially Matthew, were very lovely and helpful. After arriving, we were escorted to the lounge for a drink. The bartender came over to take the drinks order and one of our guests ordered the margarita, but wanted it stronger, so with an extra shot of tequila inside it. The bartender looked annoyed that he was being asked to modify the drink and refused saying he was legally not allowed to put an extra shot into the drink. This is untrue as the UK regulation for Standard Pours and Measures does not cover this request. And given it was the very first drink of the night, the "serving responsibly" clause does not apply either. When the senior front of house staff came to take our food order. When being asked to select between the 6 course and 10 course, we asked him what the differences would be between the 2. To which the unhelpful and serious reply was "4 courses" and then went on to explain the maths of it. Rather than explaining what dishes we would be missing out and giving us some meaningful guidance about which one to consider. Having just been to L'enclume, and other Michelin star restaurants, where you can select between wine pairing options for e.g. a standard wine pairing Vs a premium wine pairing. We asked the same waiting staff member if there were options for the wine pairing. To which he looked annoyed and said "There can only ever be one wine pairing". So we were off to a terrible start. The meal: The food was largely enjoyable and of a high standard. However, At £95 for a 6 course tasting, we left hungry. The main of the beef was a tiny tiny portion, it was just one small medallion sized piece. We have definitely had better 1* 6 course tasting menus for £65. So, this was poor value for money. At the end of the meal, we went back to the lounge for our cheese course. We wanted to order some port with it, but we couldn't find the port in the sweet / fortified wine section. So, when the same bar tender came to take our order, we asked if they had port. He looked at us as if we were stupid and said "Well you need to look at the Bar menu". Disappointed overall as we were really looking forward to the meal. As a result, we wouldn't be recommending this experience.

We were very disappointed that the restaurant, we ate in the conservatory, has gone minimalistic. Not only has it lost the ambiance, but that nothing now absorbed sounds. Lovely hotel, lovely rooms. Ate in the Source, the Michelin restaurant. Amazing food but atmosphere and decor wasn't amazing. Had music playing such as Paul Weller, Ocean Colour Scene, Fleetwood Mac. Although I enjoy that music, it sounded like a radio station and didn't fit the required ambience. No tablecloths, very stripped back. Breakfast was also very nice. Nicer ambience than in the evening meal area. Also, we were there for 10th wedding anniversary. Lacked any real personal touch. We sat next to the window over looking the garden, which made the setting perfect. We will definitely return and hopefully stay over next time. We'd highly recommend Gilpin.

Source at the Gilpin 5*Hotel. Rough edges in service - orders lost, taxi timing screw up - were why they lost a star. And being made to feel, as someone having the à la carte menu and our own wine pairings, that we were second class citizens compared to the 8 courses with dedicated wines at more than twice the price we paid. The obsequious fawning of the 12 year old sommelier over ignorant diners was also annoying. Muzak too loud was another fault. I will say that much of the food was excellent - I had quail then beef and a lovely rice pudding for my 3 courses.

Impeccable meal. Six of us had the tasting menu with wine pairing. The food service and wine was superb. Easily one of the best restaurants in the Lake District.

A luxurious restaurant set inside a wonderful hotel. The food was worthy of the Michelin star and the wine selection was very good. The 2 options of taster menu or A La Carte is excellent and ensured high level of quality was maintained. Overall if staying at the hotel or thinking of visiting the restaurant would recommend a visit.

Gilpin have a huge team of chefs working in a kitchen that's on display to visitors from the footpath up to reception. The waiting lounge is welcoming, relaxed and comfortable. We were not only asked about dietary requirements but as my wife is vegetarian they took an active interest to explore exactly what that meant to her and understand the details of what Preya would be happy eating (eggs, dairy, gelatine etc). This then allowed them to mix and match items from both menus (plant based and 'normal') appropriately. Although there were a couple of mishaps through the evening they were dealt with professionally and respectfully. As such we feel we can't fault them. We went for the tasting menu which was superb. It was well presented and full of flavour. Each dish felt like something we would not have been served anywhere else and likely never will be! Neither of us could fault the tasting menu. Even the meat dishes felt like a new experience to me which is often not the case. Sometimes I have felt like the real imagination & effort goes into the plant based alternatives which end up being more exciting but that was not the case here! In this menu it felt like more thought had been put into every dish. Lots of technique was on show here. Really enjoyed our night with Source at Gilpin where we were made to feel special, extremely well looked after and special. Food was thoroughly enjoyable and with a touch of luxury.

We wanted to say a huge thank you to the fabulous team at Source at Gilpin Hotel for a truly memorable evening. Our whole evening was faultless and the food and wine pairing exquisite. As self confessed foodies we find it hard to pick out a single course or wine but this morning we both commented that the Loin of Cod was a stand out moment. Absolutely beautiful balance. We were also very impressed with our wine sommelier and waitress . Both were so knowledgeable and made our evening even more enjoyable. Please pass our congratulations to them both and to the brigade in the Source kitchen. We'll be back !

Dined here (Source) during an average 3 night stay at the hotel. The hotel knew via our booking we were here to celebrate my partners 50th. Nothing was done on the night for this (not even a happy birthday on a plate) and nor did the staff on the night ask if we we’re celebrating anything. We opted for the wine pairings so meal was £400. Was all excellent with wines matching well. Would have liked to have taken away details of the matched wines on a menu card. Other niggle. Booked for 7pm and invited to the bar for 6:30 for pre dinner drinks. We we’re blissfully ignored by the bar staff for 25 minutes and had to pin someone down for two glasses of champagne, not great but they didn’t charge for them. If you’re going to invite someone for pre dinner drinks at least have the courtesy to take a prompt order. I’d recommend the restaurant but doubtful we’d revisit given the frustrations above.

We visited Source at the Gilpin to sample their tasting menu. Source is meant to be a Michelin star restaurant. We had such high hopes, having recently been taken over, this was the first Lake District menu the new chef had put together. We’ve visited quite a few Michelin star restaurants over the past few years and this was very poor, didn’t even come close to Michelin standard. The tasting menu was mostly fish, which we didn’t mind in theory, with duck in between the fish dishes and the desserts. The duck was awfully cooked. In fact, it wasn’t cooked properly at all. Hard to even cut, and the fat wasn’t rendered at all. We left some of this meal, which is shocking given the quality it should be and the price you pay. The desserts were also very poor, as were the handmade chocolates afterwards - 2 chocolates in fact, no bigger than the size of a five pence piece. The menu states that cheese is offered as as additional course, which is absolutely fine, but during our meal this wasn’t even mentioned. As this was dubbed a Lake District menu, I asked where the ingredients were sourced from, assuming that the majority of the menu would be local. It wasn’t - most of the ingredients were from the south. Why wouldn’t you take advantage of the fantastic ingredients on your doorstep, especially as the name of the menu makes you think that’s what you’re getting. Unfortunately, we were extremely disappointed and won’t be going back. The couple on the table next to us complained about exactly the same courses as we did, and as they were staying there, they received money off their bill. We did not, no one followed up on our complaints during the evening. I would not recommend Source at the Gilpin in its current form, and it should not be a Michelin star restaurant.

Unfortunately not quite the exceptional experience we were anticipating. The staff were fabulous. They really new their stuff and were very good at their jobs. The choice on the menu was lacking. Two members of our party are not fish fans and this was made aware prior to arrival. They were not given alternatives so their “choice” was made for them. When the food arrived it was luke warm at best. The langoustine starter was very enjoyable, the cod main course was unfortunately not memorable. The cheese selection was excellent. When the bill arrived it just felt like we paid a lot of money for something that didn’t quite match up. On the plus side, the wine was very reasonably priced and the staff were great.

We recently dined here and were disappointed. At £120 for 6 courses and snacks I would expect Michelin quality ( in food and service) but that was sadly not the case. We were asked to arrive at 1900 for 1930 but were left sitting in the bar area with nothing more than a tiny bowl of nuts and olives until 1945 - by which time we were very hungry. The first course was a soy soaked cauliflower. Interestingly we’d had a cauliflower curry for supper the previous evening so I was looking forward to the stunning difference between the two. This one was effectively in a thai green curry sauce and I didn’t enjoy it. The sweetness of the scallop in the next course was obliterated in a bitter marmite tasting sauce and the cod was a little dry ( and when I looked at the 2inch long block of cod all I could think was that it was costing me £20). The service was also very slow which I think was being caused by a blockage in the kitchen as opposed to a lack of skill by the waiters although we did have to chase our drinks more than once as we didn’t do the wine pairing but ordered by the glass. All in all it felt a bit sloppy when you would expect rigour from a restaurant with a michelin star. Maybe this is because the chef who earned the star - Hrishikesh Desai - has moved onto pastures new. Sadly it seems he has taken his star with him.

Unfortunately we were left a little disappointed with our dining experience. The Michelin restaurant now has a new name & it also seems another new restaurant has opened at the hotel (knipe) so potentially some chef/management/ menu changes are underfoot and they are finding their feet. We have dined at a few Michelin restaurants and for us this just wasn’t the quality we were looking forward to. You are told to arrive 30 mins before your reservation for welcome drinks & nibbles but there are no drinks, you have to purchase your own. The tasting menu was only 6 courses + snacks (i appreciate this sounds alot but it isn’t for a Michelin tasting menu.) There was nothing overly creative on the menu and in honesty alot of the dishes were quite bland. The cod in particular was flavourless & chewy and every single one of my dishes was only luke warm, nothing was hot. The paired wines were ok (there was a delicious dessert wine!) There was no rapport with the staff, it was serve & go. We also had to get somebodys attention to order initial drinks as did the tables around us. All in all quite an average experience which is a shame and i wish we’d tried a different restaurant onsite.

We were staying at the Gilpin so booked into HRiSHi. We chose the 5 course menu. This consisted of nibbles, starter, main, dessert and coffee with two chocolates. The food was delightful, beautifully presented. The staff very friendly and efficient, though the wine waiter was slow in filling up our glasses so we did not ourselves, which we preferred to do anyway. Downsides We were told we were invited for drinks and nibbles at 7.45 for the 8.15 sitting. With other Michelin restaurants this means a glass of fizz and interesting quality nibbles. Here it meant you buy your own drinks at the bar and get a small plates of olives and nuts. Nothing special. The restaurant is in there rooms so there may be too many guests for one room but not enough to make any have a buzz or atmosphere. Finally, no amuse bouche or any little extras.

We went as couples to celebrate a couple of birthdays. It was a shame that it was in the evening so could not experience the views but the restaurant itself was lovely. We were led to the lounge where we had cocktails and choose our menu- we decided on the tasting menu. After booking the restaurant, I had informed them of my dietary restrictions but that message hadn’t got through to the restaurant and I found it embarrassing to discuss this with the maitre d’hotel in front of the others as it was not my doo and the focus was on me and not them . After some discussion , my menu was sorted and the service was done without a hitch and without a fuss but it should have been sorted before I arrived as it had with other restaurants - in a seamless way. The food was very good with good wines and the meal was a fabulous experience for us all and our Bulgarian waitress was excellent and very attentive.

First time experience so I have nothing to compare it to. I wasn't impressed. Tried the taster menu and there was only 2 courses that I enjoyed, same with my husband. As a group of friends meeting for pre Christmas lunch, we chose The Anglers for its convenient location, midway between Barrow and Kendal and for it’s good reviews. It was nicely decorated for Christmas and the food and service were excellent. There were not many people there, considering it was a Friday lunchtime, which was such a shame. Would thoroughly recommend it.

Cold and smelled of dogs on arrival. Waited ages to be served and the waitress was more interested on who was at the bar rather than taking our table order for 10 people. Food was very salty and the steak pie in particular was terrible. Every meal as standard/basic or frozen style food. The whole place is run down and miserable. We went off trip advisor reviews as well on a visit to the area and wished we hadn’t. Go to The Pheasant Inn down the road at Allithwaite instead that was lovely food and fab service.
