Cosy pub and currently nice and Christmassy. Was quite busy for a Tuesday but everyone was literally gone by 9pm. Pie, although lacked a bit of wow factor (on a board without garnish), was absolutely delicious. Pastry was buttery and melt in the mouth as was the steak. Nice drinks. Very large car park which is handy.

Took the grandchildren to the Merrivale model village which was excellent. We ordered a large bowl of chips each at £5.40 I'd hate to see a normal size portion. When we asked for some vinegar we were told they had been busy and had run out. We then had to eat a dry bowl of chips, fortunately not to many! They had also run out of toilet paper which we did tell the staff about, to prevent customer distress.

The three of us had a great lunch on Friday 6th December. Great comfort food in a pleasant pub setting. The staff were helpful and professional. They also looked after our dog. Recommend the place if walking in Nomansland or Heartwood Forest. We’ll be back.

We came here to celebrate my dad’s birthday and had a truly delightful evening. It was such a thoughtful gesture for the staff to give him a birthday card—it made the occasion feel even more special. The food was excellent. I had a steak that was of outstanding quality and cooked to perfection. The staff were friendly, welcoming, and provided efficient service throughout the evening, which added to the overall experience. The decor is tastefully done with a traditional feel, creating a refined and elegant atmosphere. This is definitely a place for a sophisticated dining experience, rather than a lively or trendy vibe. Another bonus is the large, free car park, which made arriving and leaving so convenient. For a special occasion, I would highly recommend this restaurant.

Driven passed this pub at least 30 times on way to Gatwick over the years but never stopped. Visited on Thursday 26th September at 1:30pm. Reasonable sized car park with lots of spaces. Pub has oak beams which gives it a real traditional vibe. Didn’t book a table but was able to be seated straight away. Good choice on the menu. We had ciabatta baguettes (one halumi one sausage/onion) washed down with a Prosecco and a beer. Service good and baguettes only £9 each. View out the back of the pub over the South Downs is stunning! Worth knowing that last food orders are 2pm for lunch. Would definitely return.

Excellent carvery with prompt service with a smile. Plentiful serving of nice food in a pleasant restaurant and great cider! - we will be back. We visited for Sunday lunch (one veggie) and it was busy so strongly recommend pre-booking.

I’ve never been before but I wasn’t overly impressed we booked the 2:30 sitting when we arrived the tiny reception area was crambed until people were seated. There is an overwhelming smell of musty food the decor is dated tables are a mix mash of wood and plastic covered, cutlery is basic as are plates. Onto the main part the food, starter was lovely mushrooms on sour bread presentation could be better , main was a choice of beef turkey pork beef and gammon downsides was the only vegetarian option was sausage 36£ for sausage roast is a bit expensive vegetable options were mash potato, carrots, roast potatoes, cabbage no cauliflower cheese, parsnips etc Pudding was ok nothing special. Overall I was underwhelmed and have had better in better surroundings.

This pub is glorious. Jess, Adam and the staff team are the tightest of tight-knit bands. They've all got each other's backs, and new staff become part of the team and "get" the culture in the blink of an eye - it must be infectious! The beers are lovely. The food is home-cooked magic. In summer, the walled garden is a sun-dappled sanctuary from the bustle of life. In winter, the twinkling lights and open fires warm the soul. We love the New Bowling Green!!!

A warm welcome from James and excellent service from Ollie, who is a recent addition to the team. A beautiful location on a sunny, Autumn day and a fabulous lunch. The Sunday roast was delicious and the Eton mess was incredible. My companion had just completed one of the well documented circular walks from the pub and enjoyed winding down and soaking up the atmosphere. I wish I lived nearer.

Stumbled upon this lovely cafe when looking for somewhere to get coffee and cake after a walk at Troutbeck. We got a very friendly welcome despite it being fairly close to closing. Amazing selection of cakes including gf and df. Definitely recommend stopping by.
