The best restaurants serving British food in Scotland

Booked in for Afternoon Tea. Ordered 2 different types of tea. Only one type arrived so had to send it back. Then we had a 45 minute wait for the food (bearing in mind this was booked in advance). We had no tea left and no offer of more and no staff to ask. I ordered vegetarian and got 3 tiny slices of grated cheese and tomato sandwiches while my husband got 3 tiny slices of tuna and 3 grated cheese, tomato and pesto! The scones were cold so asked for them to be warmed up. They came back cold. No cream for them either. The only decent part of the whole meal was the cakes. Certainly not worth the money. It’s the worst Afternoon Tea we’ve ever had! We’ll never return.

Standard pub fayre eats. The restaurant is well spaced out and has a reasonable sized beer garden. Food is ok, offers on main meals Monday to Thursday. Happy to see this place operational again. Staff were friendly. TV's for games on skysports.

We were here for afternoon tea, although the food was presented very well and tasted great, there were far too many cakes and not enough savoury foods, we asked for a box to take at least 9 cakes home, from the time we asked we had waited over 30 minutes, which spoiled the whole experience, when the boxes arrived they looked like plastic small Chinese takeaway boxes which the cakes didn't fit into and were all squashed, I asked for a bigger box but that was all they had! I did notice other people sitting across from us who waited ages to even be acknowledged, eventually the lady got up and went to reception to see why nobody had came to see them, not the best of service from such a beautiful hotel, although the food was lovely.

Karaoke and disco upstairs was brilliant dj as well. We'll be back.

Lovely evening dining with family. Menu was extensive and food delicious. Plenty of seating and the staff friendly and helpful.

Today I attended for lunch. Bedside my table was a person incessantly talking on his mobile “joining the dots”. At the payment point I discreetly pointed out my experience and she made me feel inconsequence as he was a regular customer and I wasn’t?

Scottish hospitality at its best! Great place to stay, staff are fantastic and welcoming. Food at dinner and breakfast was great, and had a good night’s sleep in a comfy, clean room! Super dog friendly too.

A lovely lunch as always. So sad that Balmakewan has had to make the decision to close permanently. So many people, both local and passers by will miss the wonderful food, service and the welcome given on every occasion.

What a lovely pub. Welcoming staff and good service. The food was outstanding. We will definitely be back and happily recommend it.

In addition to the kindness and the smiling and kind faces of the bar owners, I underline the excellent quality of the coffee, and I tell you as an Italian, one of the best drinks here. Very good.

Always a friendly service. Food is great and get value for money

I just don’t get it. Thought reviews must be for a different place. Pros: bed and shower good; very nice hostess, good full breakfast. Cons: can’t get over smell in my room-overpowering in not a good way. No laundry as stated in Booking.com. Room describes a courtyard view, in reality it’s an over grown garden that is in much need of tending. Entire place appears to be a DIY project that needs serious attention.

Had a very enjoyable afternoon with ex colleagues. The staff simply couldn't do enough for us.
