Great food at a reasonable price, friendly staff and excellent service

Very disappointed meals were not hot and my wife's meal was full of rind will not be rushing back sorry guys you need to up the quality

VERY disappointed, food only average at best, I ordered Seabass with king prawns, but, firstly seabass was over cooked, but NO king prawns, but I git tiny shrimps, that had no taste, and were barely warm, the saute were not sauté, but deep fried and were also only just warm! I did mention all of this to a waiter, he said he'dtell the kitchen, but he never came back ! That's the problem with these places where you pay up front, they just DON'T care, my wife's burger was also overcooked, and far too small for the bun it was served on ! Take my advice, and go somewhere else !!!

Nice atmosphere. Good service . Food was average. We had the battered mushrooms which tasted greasy with some strange dip followed by Mac n cheese which was nice but a bit dry. For desert we had what was supposed to be salted caramel cheesecake. Tasted nothing like it. Would I return? Perhaps in the evening

Staff were working on a really hot day, no major smiles. Food was all good for allergenics and was delivered quickly and it was hot, a touch shy on the gravy, although rib of beef was so tender and of course all home cooked. Sleepy sunday atmosphere, very nice wee country welcome within the pub.

Lovely place, fantastic food and really good value. Wings to start were amazing, beef rib Sunday lunch incredible but all a little dry. Roast was lovely but needed more gravy. Tiny amount provided and waited 20 mins for more which arrived in a literal egg cup. Also asked 3 times before it arrived. Simplest and cheapest part of the dinner but spoils the whole thing. Also, is cranberry sauce not a thing in Scotland? Pudding was the same, thimble of custard with a lovely crumble.

We had great time as always with our dog Poppy, The staff are great and always make a point of saying hello to her.

Enjoyed the food which took more than 45 minutes to come which was far too long. Do not like dogs in a pub..It would be different if the dog section was on one place but it's not and you are sitting there eating your food with a dog looking at you....I think it's awful. Owners need to be more responsible and realise not everyone likes dogs! Will definitely think twice about joing back there if this continues.

Came in on recommendation from a friend who runs the Fox and Hounds in Leeds and wasn't disappointed. Very different vibe but we liked it all the same. Thanks for a great time guys. Love Ember Inns so always Google them when we are going away ☺️

Dropped in to Justinlees Inn for evening meal in order to support local hostelry and having not been in for a couple of years. Found the staff to be totally devoid of personality and lacking in “people”skills. This was evident on my first engagement with them and proved pretty consistent throughout. Food was tasty enough but portions on the small side for costs incurred. A dispute regarding the chosen meal presented and what the menu promised fell on deaf ears. The waitress nonsensically defending the servings and showing absolutely no interest in customer enquiry or satisfaction. Flat mushroom (single ) the size of a ten pence piece(rather than Portobello) and fried tomato(halved) from the “cherry” variety. I could see plenty white china on the plate presented to me. Ambience is potentially good but not much joy exhibited from the staff. Well! - there are enough restaurants in this area which are more deserving of my custom and this will be the case! Just not good enough I’m afraid to say!

Visited Dalkeith Country Park and wanted something to eat on the way back.. found The Justinlees Inn. Clean, tidy , friendly staff. We ordered 2 meals from the 6 and over mains as we do not have big appetites..no frills but both meals were lovely and just the right size to then treat ourselves to a small pudding. Price was fantastic as we both ate for a total of £13! The staff were friendly and the Inn was clean and tidy.

On arrival Pauline showed us to our table, she took our order, she was very polite, friendly, professionally and very easy to talk to. She check a few times that everything was ok and if we needed anything else. I would highly recommend Justinlesss as the food was excellent, the staff were all professional and friendly and the restaurant and toilets was clean and tidy.

I never received this order. Phoned the restaurant and they said it had been picked up. I would like a full refund immediately

Got a Sunday roast last weekend and Been fighting through just eat for a refund due to find hairs in my food but my refund was declined from the restaurant I find it shocking that to decline it after providing photos have been going here for year won’t be back her is a phot if the proof of hair 45 I spent on 3 meals and no even have the decency to own up to there mistake

Tried for the second time. utter rubbish again, soup cold, so all eating at different times, no gammon so half the table had to choose different meal. Main courses came, peas were stone cold so had to send back again, had to wait 10 mins for dinners to come back, so all eating at different times again and when they returned, rest of dinner cold. Complained to staff and asked to see manager, was told they were short in kitchen but he was too busy upstairs?, some manager!. Had to ask for desserts, waited another 15 mins they came but no cutlery!!, had to go to bar and ask due to waiting time, ice cream had melted by that point. POOR SHOW AGAIN MANAGER ADAM, COULD AT LEAST HAVE CAME DOWN TO EXPLAIN OR APOLOGISE. UTTER RUBBISH, POOR MANA GEMENT, AVOID 2 stars for staff, not their fault. Zero for management. Never be back to Mitchell and Butler justinlees and good mind to complain directly to seeing if I get response from them as manager ADAM not interested. Too many bad reviews, we can't all be wrong.

Very cool place! I recommend it to everyone, you can simply order via the QR code on the table or on the menu (but of course you don't have to) You can also pay immediately on the website. The food is very delicious, the place is cozy, the staff is very nice and friendly. Unfortunately, they ran out of bacon when we were there, so it was left out of the hamburger, but in return they immediately invited us both for a free round of drinks.😋🥰

Booked for a family of 8 today (Sunday, Father's Day) to be told at 6.15pm that there were no roast dinners left. Considering we had booked (£40 deposit!!), and the early time, this is completely unacceptable. After being informed of this, since there isn't really an alternative to a roast dinner, and 6 of us wanted to order a roast of some kind, we just decided it would be best to leave. Our drinks and deposit were refunded quickly, however this of course didn't make up for a family meal ruined. My grandparents regularly eat here due to how accessible it is for a wheelchair, however they and the rest of us will not be back due to this experience. How this could happen on a notoriously busy Sunday is beyond me.

I've only just moved to the whitecraig area in musselburgh but work in Edinburgh so when my bus is late I've started to nip in here for a few pints of belhaven best which I'm glad they serve as the previous bar I was calling into didn't. The place is very clean very nice I'd imagine to have a meal which I will be doing soon with my partner and my 2 year old daughter. Service is great staff pretty friendly so no complaints. As I said looking forward to something to eat in here as when food has passed me it looks very good 👍

The Justinlees is my regular haunt with my partner and dog when we are out for a drink in Dalkeith. It’s a lovely, large pub in Eskbank and caters to lots of people, from those who just want a quick drink, to family meals, to birthday gatherings and to those who want to catch the rugby. The drinks are varied, they have lots of different options here, beers, wine, champagne, cocktails, shots, soft drinks and more - and they are happy to make something custom to you. For example, sometimes my partner wants a shot of peanut butter sheepdog in a glass of coke. This isn’t on the menu but they were more than happy to make it for us. Drinks are a little pricier than other local pubs but the atmosphere is a lot more luxurious than some other pubs. They have nice food too; often with pubs, food is an afterthought and consists of cheap cooked from frozen ready meals, such as fish and chips and pie and mash. The Justinlees offers these dishes too, among many more, but they are as different as night is from day, and cooked from fresh and served with care. I had one bad experience when ordering sausages (I got food poisoning) but ever since I have stuck to the chicken burger or ribs and I’ve been fine. The puddings are good too, especially the sticky toffee pudding and vegan cheesecake (which might be vegan but tastes fab to a meat eater!) There was also an occasion where a last minute change needed to be made to my sisters’ pudding (from cream to ice cream) and this was absolutely fine. There is also a nifty QR code system on the tables for ordering food, but personally I’ve never used it as I like the staff and ordering at the bar. There is not table service here apart from when they bring the food out. Once or twice I’ve had to chase up the desserts but it was no big deal. As I mentioned earlier, the pub is dog friendly and Luna, our Staffie mix is always welcome here. Dogs are always kept on the leash and there is a designated ‘dog friendly’ part of the pub, as well as multiple entrances, so if you are scared of dogs this shouldn’t be an issue as they can be avoided. Luna always had a fuss made of her when the staff see her, and despite her occasionally silly behaviour, she is always welcomed with a warm smile and fresh water and treats from their self-serve dog treat station, which is always out and located next to the bar. If you can’t find it the friendly staff will be happy to help. Special mention to the landlady/ lady who works there who is English, and wears a sunflower lanyard. She often stops to chat to us and gives Luna biscuits when she sees us. She always remembers us and Luna and makes a big fuss of her. One suggestion is to put on social media/ their website when the pub has got a rugby match or football match on, as with my autism I struggled with the loud noise from fans last time. All in all, the Justinlees is a great pub, and one of mine, my partners and Luna’s favourite places to be. Julia

A very good address, we stumbled upon it by chance but were won over by everything. Prices are reasonable (with attractive menus) and the food is very good. We also discovered that they organize events and quiz nights, so we'll have to come back again.

Service was very disappointing. We waited 1 hour and 15 minutes for 4 meals that tasted just ok and were poorly presented. A few tables arrived after us and were served before us, leaving before our meals had even arrived. We asked twice if there were any issues as we had been waiting so long - the first waitress said no, the second waiter advised our meals would be out in 10 minutes. We fed back to the manager/waiter at the end and he apologised, stating there was staff sickness. Despite this, we weren’t offered a refund but were offered puddings, which we didn’t accept. Had we not had to pay for the food when ordering, we would not have been happy paying full price.

Very very disappointed with the service today, I understand they could've been understaffed but there was 4 of us and we did order separately but probably 2 mins after one another and 2 people's food came after 30 mins then I waited a further 10 mins for mine then my friend waited another 20 mins for hers. Will not be back. Half arsed apology.

We were a table of 4. Two of us waited 30 mins. The 3rd meal came 10 later and 4th meal came about 10 mins after that. 2 of us had completely finished our meal before the party meal came out. The chicken burger was dry. The vegetarian pie was over cooked with a tiny bit of filling. The gammon was OK and the last dish was so late in coming the my friend just felt so rushed to eat it cos we were all finished before hers came. This is the 2nd disappointing meal I've had here so won't be back x

A very disappointing experience at the Justinlees. It wasnt busy at all when we arrived, shown to a nice table. We ordered lunch and drinks, both arrived quickly enough. Nachos to share were poor with bright orange squeezy cheese, and only a few spoons of guacamole and sour cream. We then waited an hour and a half for mains, seeing other tables who had arrived after us getting roast dinner served. Eventually after prompting the staff our meals arrived. Burgers were so poorly presented we were speechless, fries thrown onto the plate, not a shred of salad garnish or any attempt to make it look less like a school dinner. The waiting staff said there were staff shortages, but if they'd been upfront and honest about how long we might wait, or to advise which of the menu items would arrive quicker we'd have appreciated and understood it. As it is, none of us will be back and will not recommend to anyone. The pub is in a good location, is pleasant enough and could be amazing, but sadly our experience today was extremely poor.

Visited for a family lunch today after having heard good things about this place. Either we were very unlucky with our experience today or people have been too generous in their recommendation. Drinks and starters arrived in decent time but this does not excuse waiting 1hr 15 minutes for mains to arrive, especially after seeing other people arrive after us and being served before us. At no point did the staff advise us there were any issues in the kitchen or with service, so I went to the bar for an update. Around 15 minutes later, plates arrived, and the presentation for waiting over an hour was pretty embarrassing. The food was fine - it's perfectly serviceable pub grub - but I felt compelled to ask the waiter/manager (not sure what the position was) what happened because our entire party felt frustrated. I was informed 'it's been busy' and so I felt it necessary to push a bit, as the place was lucky if it was half full. I asked if there had been staff illnesses or anything like that, at which point I was informed there were indeed kitchen staff absent and we'd been 'unlucky' with when we placed our orders as two large groups have arrived at the same time as us. A poor excuse if I'm being honest. Had we been approached by wait staff at any point during the meal to advise us of potential waiting times, I'd have understood. Had that been recognised as a fault of their own, I'd have understood. But I didn't appreciate them not taking ownership of what was clearly a poor experience for us, and then offering us desserts as we were leaving, the latter feeling like a poor attempt to cover for a job badly done. The staff could certainly look at this as a learning experience and hopefully they'll improve in future for anyone who does want to give Justinlees a try.

Called in for breakfast while visiting Edinburgh with my husband. Friendly and welcoming staff and a lovely cooked breakfast. Will call again when we are next in the area.

what kind of idiot would pour gravy into cardboard box for delivery. unacceptable. couldn't eat cardboard stuck to food. absolute joke.

Popped in for some food, everyone we dealt with was lovely. Was quite busy so were told be a little longer for food but still got it within half an hour. Food was lovely we got burgers and some sides everything was cooked perfectly and tasted great. Amy was also lovely organising a replacement cocktail after they were out of one of the ingredients for the one I’d ordered. Will definitely be back!

Went for lunch, no salads were available or Ciabattas... Went for battered prawns from starters and a side of chips and a juice. Extremely small portions not worth £11...

I'm on holiday and used to love coming here. Not anymore. I have been in twice in the last 4 weeks and it has not been good. The first time the food was not good. Today, the food was just ok but we were told the credit card machine was down so they would run a tab and then we could use the card in a bit when the machine was fixed. About an hour later we went to pay and were told it's now cash only. I had my credit card (which I was told I could use soon) I am not from here so I was not happy when I was then told in order to pay I would need to walk in the pouring rain to the ATM to get cash. (Also costing me a rather large fee to withdraw cash). Our €22 lunch turned into an additional £25 in my ATM fees. We never should have been told we could use our card if you were not sure your machine would be fixed. Saddened by my experience in a place I once loved visiting.

Went out for an Easter family meal and ended up waiting for 1-2hours for food which was extremely mediocre. Staff members were extremely unaccommodating and unfriendly. Wouldn’t recommend this place at all if you are trying to have a nice meal out with family.

Good location decent food good beer what else do you need

Popped in for a quick lunch on my own and had the steak sandwich. I asked for it medium rare and it came perfectly cooked, clearly made fresh. I got ships with it too and the portion size was decent, very good value for money. I'd definitely recommend for really good affordable food. Staff were very nice and food arrived in good time.

Lovely cosy pub with great food. Was here with the family and thoroughly enjoyed our meal, the kids loved it and they are the hardest ones to please!

The food just wasn't good enough staff friendly and helpful the place itself nice atmosphere the starters I had chicken wings which were average at best the other starter was another chicken dish with about 6 pieces of chicken three pieces looked to be cooked ok the other 3 were rock solid obviously they were left overs reheated. Took that back had cheesey garlic bread which was ok. The mains Hunters chicken was really dry hardly any sauce the chips bog standard frozen and the peas hard not cooked the other main haddock and chips looked nice but fish frozen no flavour the batter on the soggy side and the chips and peas as above this is the third time I have been in the JustinLees Inn and every time there is always something wrong the only reason I was there last night was we had a voucher as a Christmas gift but I wont be back.

We have been to the Justinlees quite a few times and the food has always been okay. We love that it is dog-friendly and the restaurant has a dog station with water bowls and jars of dog treats for your furry friend. However, on this occasion, we were quite disappointed with the food. Firstly we were asked to wait to order our food as the there was only one chef and 4 other tables had already ordered. Twenty minutes later, we were called to the bar to order. One of our party of 3 ordered the beef and red wine lasagne which arrived very burnt and dry on the top. The contents of the dish were also incredibly dry and parts of the pasta and what was supposed to be cheese, were so hard they couldn’t be cut or scraped from the side of the bowl. We informed the waitress of our disappointment with this and she advised she would pass our complaint on to the chef. On paying for our meal, the rest of which was only ‘okay’…we mentioned it to the staff member who apologised but offered no discount. Average food expected from here but on this occasion, it was well below average and we were disappointed with no compensation. We most likely won’t be back :(

Staff awesome... Very friendly and helpful.. However the meal was not .. Wanted fish and chips, none left, at 5 o'clock really.. Decided to have lasagne.. was really good, but in a kid's portion size.. with a little salad on the side.. not value for money.. will be a long time before I go back...

No steak, no fish, no pasta. The sharing starter of nachos priced at £8.79 was disgraceful, it would hardly be enough for one person let alone 2. Minute amount of cheese,salsa, sour cream and guacamole. I was throughly disgusted. Additionally 2 out of 4 of the mini sweets were also unavailable. I ordered a flat white that was disgusting. Service wait time was atrocious and some dishes and glasses were still on our table when we left at 7pm.

Chicken was really dry, gammon was under cooked. Extremely overpriced for such a small portion. Vegetables were pathetic. Total waste of money

This evening around 16:00hrs went to order meal and was told they only had one gammon and one vegan wellington left because we were hungry we said we would take these along with two puddings. When we got our meals I didn’t have gravy had to ask for this my partner’s meal was cold and the gravy was cold the mash potato was like it was just flung on the plate what was on the menu wasn’t what was on the menu was very disappointing I was eating my meal but the veg was cold hard my partner had his taken away and got his money back sorry to say won’t be rushing back. Was told reason there wasn’t much food was because there had been couple large tables in common it’s Sunday should be prepared to be busy.

First, there's no one to greet you on arrival and show you where your table is anymore. We went and searched for it ourselves, found our name and time on the table. Fine, but then there was no highchair ready at the table on arrival despite requesting it when we booked the table. The bar was really busy, so instead of queuing to order our food and drink, we ordered through the QR Code/ app. Drinks then took ages to arrive. So did the food. Portion sizes were measly! Not enough scampi and not enough chips on all our plates. Chips also didn't taste of anything at all, just frozen rubbish. We had also ordered a side of roasted vegetables which was embarassingly small for the money. Burgers were just really average too - they used to do some amazing crispy buttermilk chicken burgers but seems they've scrapped them sadly. One of us had upgraded to (and we paid extra for) sweet potato fries but received normal chips by mistake. We told the waitress and then had to remind them several times about the sweet potato fries we had actually ordered, and by the time they arrived nearly 1/2 hour later, we'd all obviously finished our meal by then! Just rubbish service. They were not quick enough - sweet potato fries really don't take even 5 mins in the fryer! No excuse for it, and clearly no thought for the customer experience. I can appreciate they are busy (and clearly understaffed) but if there's a problem with someone's meal, a good pub restaurant would remedy the issue asap! Safe to say - glad we didn't leave a tip! Also weird that the app asks you to tip upon payment before you even get any service/ your food! Very strange. Been into Justinlees a few times since the new General Manager arrived. And I’m very pleased to say that things are on the up! Cleanliness, service and quality of food have all improved. Credit when credit is due, especially after a couple of negative reviews from me. Thank you to the team for continuing to turn things around - well done!!

Nice atmosphere and friendly staff. However not the place to go if you are in a hurry or lack patience as the meals can take some time to appear.

Food was terrible,not hot, I had to ask for more chips,as there was only about 10 chips on the plate, Cheeseburger was disgusting. Wifes Roast Beef,cold. Staff didn't even ask if everything was good with the food, staff came back & just said,we will just take these away for you,our almost full plates,returned to kitchen. Wasn't even asked,if we wanted a sweet or tea coffee. We weren't the only unhappy customers, heard barstaff,issuing refunds,to 2 other parties. Best avoid,even if your starving.

Whole gravy had burst all over the bag and all over the food and the delivery driver just handed me it and said sorry and walked away. I now have gravy all over my floor and food spoiled!

Only reason food score was low was because didn't have any food just drinks good night service was good and drinks reasonably priced

The place was absolutely freezing - asked for the heating to be turned on, an hour later asked again, still no heating after a couple of hours (bar staff were v apologetic about this and had asked the manager to put the heating but to no avail..) so bar staff gave us a plug in heater to sit under the table! Steak was very fatty And chewy…onion rings were pretty over done and the dessert was a much smaller portion than previously! Atmosphere was non existent just a noisy pub BUT the bar staff were lovely!!

Food was awful and had to clear the table to make room for kids desserts . Noticed other people having to clear tables before they could sit down . Staff however were lovely but due to minimal staff they just couldn’t do everything . Management need to have more staff on shift .

Dined there tonight, wanted prawns for starters but none available so ordered chicken wings, out came chicken drum sticks! Steak was ok, burger not good. Mixed grill ok. My wife asked for gin and tonic , it came in talk glass so asked for gin glass, drink came back in babycham glass!!! Not impressed, dont think will be back.

Pathetic portions for the price. Chips & peas were cold, gammon was dry and eggs were slightly overcooked. Just generally disappointing. Could easily be much better than this. Apologies it’s such a negative review, but I need to be honest.

We managed to book a table on the Friday for 6 people to watch the rugby , brilliant service from when we walked in till after the 2 games on the new TV Table service amazing for 6 old fellas that did not want to go to the bar Food excellent and service matched. Well done the just and all the new staff on a very busy Saturday afternoon

Had not been to the justinlees in a long time so thought I would give it a try again, the decor and ambience in the pub are very good and the servers that served us our meal are very polite, sadly that's where it stops the food is mediocre and the service is very slow, there were plenty of tables when we went so the pub was nowhere near full capacity yet it took ages for a sharing nacho platter to come out and the same for our main and dessert, my chicken was dry and the peas that were served were straight out a can withought being warmed at all. The sauce that was on the nachos didn't have much consistency at all and the nachos seemed not very fresh. The one part of the meal that was good was there apple pie, perhaps this is bought in and heated. I would certainly not class this food as good value and most people could prepare just as good at home or probably better.

I Apparantly ordered the recommended burger according to the menu, I would hate to see the others. When I handed it back asking for my refund I was told I was rude. Some of the staff are really nice but over the past year or so the pubs service has deteriorated. Shame as it used to be good.

Good food, lovely service. We came for some lunch and had 1 chicken ciabatta and 1 steak ciabatta. Both really tasty, steak cooked to our liking. We will be back 👍🏻

Popped in for late lunch. Hadnt visited for quite a while Service was quick and server very polite and chatty. Loved the food. All excellent. Tried the 3 courses at £12.95. Not one complaint about the choices. the plate size or food quality. Will go again. Well wirth a visit
