Justinlees Inn in Midlothian

I was in the Justinlees on Sunday 16th February, the staff were very welcoming and attentive, I had the Bacon Cheese Burger which was lovely, portion size was really good. I will be back for food and drinks. Only thing i would suggest is having all staff wearing uniform, 2 Women in black and 1 gentleman in the Ember Inns Polo which made them identifiable as staff members but one gentleman was in blue jeans and a sports top which I could have mistaken him as a customer.

Major disappointment from start to finish, upon arrival I was expecting a “front of house” kind of welcome but unfortunately none so we had to wait 10 mins in a drinks queue to let someone know we had arrived for our meal. Got sat at a nice enough table but it was like the titanic any movement at all & the table would start to sway and wobble. Ordered starters, mains & drinks via the app. Both starters & mains arrived with no cutlery so on both occasions AGAIN I had to go stand in a drinks queue at the bar and ask for cutlery and napkins, the time I had done this on both occasions my food was cold..seemed to be a very long wait between starters and mains but by this point I knew it wasn’t going to get any better so just rolled with it, the food was OK not great. towards the end of the dinner I thought I’d finish on a desert. to be informed that the kitchen wasn’t taking any more food orders as it was 8.45pm. So in our 1hr45min experience all we could fit in was starter, main and a few drinks between us and the time pudding came around the kitchen was closed. From what I experienced and seen I think the establishment is understaffed and the food side of things could be much improved. I think this place would be great for casual drinks but not so good for dining. I couldn’t really see the “restaurant” aspect of this place as it just felt like a pub with a dining area but there was no waiters, no one came and checked if our food was ok, if we had any issues, the same woman served me drinks, collected my plates and gave me cutlery at the bar so It was a little blurred lines between “pub” and “restaurant”. I wasn’t expecting a fine dining experience such as a miller and carter or something as such but bare minimum would’ve been a nice meal and a nice experience but unfortunately both didn’t deliver. I’m too much of a polite person to cause a scene when out dining so I just let it be and tried to enjoy it best as I could. Definitely more staff needed and maybe fine tune the “restaurant” side of it maybe just have employees strictly dedicated to the dining side instead of jumping between serving pubgoers and then collecting plates for me it didn’t really work and there was no system to any of it. I’ve never been here before and I maybe did expect too much comparing it to other dining experiences I’ve had but hey. No bad feelings involved this experience just wasn’t for me at all. Thanks!

Needed to organise our Dad’s post-funeral lunch and popped into the Justinlees to enquire. Andy and the team couldn’t have been more helpful. They all went the extra mile to provide a great lunch that everyone enjoyed, and looked after us so well on the day. The food was really lovely and the service was fantastic. Can’t recommend the Justinlees enough!

It’s a bit of a mainstream English food style, table numbers, order at bar Weatherspoons type place, but with smaller portions and higher prices. We asked the person delivering the food if she had let some of it slide off the plate by accident on the way to the table. She said she didn’t like calamari and the portion is by weight, but I kinda thought she might have snaffled a few bits herself. Anyway, £6.29 (not sure why 29p was necessary) is a bit much for 7 tiny pieces of calamari and a wedge of lemon. That’s 90p a piece and each one was no more than 2cm in depth and width and height. It looked so sad on the plate. Not impressed. Would recommend you go to Dalkeith and find somewhere better.

As the previous comment, short staffed, starters were very small, the main i wanted was not getting served, had to order a burger and chips, it came on a large plate, no salad or garnish, the burger and chips looked very lonely on the plate, , we will not be back, staff looked sad, not good value for money,

Can't say many good things. When booking I indicated there was a gluten free diet included. Gluten free menu very very limited. Opted for a starter and chips. Ended up being told that the starter we opted for wasn't gluten free, even though it was on gluten free menu. Ordered 2 rare sirloin steaks, which came out medium at best. My daughter ordered a cocktail, and when it didn't come she went up to bar and asked where it was. The reply she got was "is that food or alcohol. Won't be going back.

Let's start with the welcome sign on the door saying closed at 6 due to lack of managers. It's not really welcoming. Walk in no one to greet us. I had to find a bar server to mention we had a reservation and got told to sit anywhere. to order at the bar when we were ready. Freezing cold inside despite open fires, heaters were warm at best. The place was empty and understandable when the food was delivered. The Sunday roast looks like it has been sitting there all day burnt and microwaved veg and the smallest potatoes in the smallest they could find. Burger was dry and not great. I had to leave it.

Family get together for early evening meal, including children. Busy, and staff struggling with so many tables. Mushrooms very greasy, should have been drained on paper before serving. Otherwise tasty and portion sizes perfect. Happy new year!

Went for Xmas dinner on 14th Dec with my daughter. Only the two of us. Staff were serving & talking about issues with their kitchen etc whilst taking our order . Sat with our coats on for first half hour as place was cold. Food was awful as my daughters pigs in blanket was black & unrecognisable (got replaced). Will never eat there again . Such a shame as it is a lovely setting. This place needs proper staffing & a good chef who all have the passion to do their job professionally .

My family (a party of 8) had Christmas dinner yesterday, which was quite poor. The starters took ages to arrive and some were luke warm. The child's portion of tomato soup took even longer to arrive, which meant she was moaning about being hungry and where was her dinner. The mains took ages to arrive too and mine arrived a good 10 minutes after everyone else's. I was told that it was in the lift !!. The meal was luke warm, brussels were hard, Yorkshire being warm were chewy, hardly any turkey. Just a very disappointing meal. We then waited ages for the desserts, the cheese and biscuits eventually arrived. To say my Christmas dinner was under whelming is an understatement. We did not complain officialy although we did ask the servers where our food was on more than one occasion. We also saw tables who arrived after us being served before us. This is the first and last time I wil go to Justinlees. Not worth the money, no atmosphere, bland and unappetising.

We ended up drinking the rest of our drinks and left. We thought it was disgraceful that we booked weeks in advance for food to be turned down on the day. I think that's awful customer service, and I don't think I'll be back again.

Update - still not impressed. Went for with friend for coffee. Waited 10mins for bar service so tried APP to order from table. After 20mins yes without coffee, I went to bar and waited another 10mins. Bar staff apologies and said they'd chase coffee. After another wait server came to say they'd run out of milk and did we want a refund.comments from others indicate poor service is the norm. Not impressed. Went with a group for a well deserved but delayed Christmas night out. It was very busy. Food service was slow. Some of our party have dietary issues and the length of time food took was concerning. After some food delivered, others had to wait even longer during which time other tables around us were served. Food was bland, fish and chips was all batter, salad was all iceberg lettuce (and no bacon as advertised). Pastry in the rhubarb tart was inedible. Staff friendly but seemed tired and perhaps overworked. Good restaurants manage the number of tables to ensure service but not here. I appreciate times are tough and expect food quantities to be controlled to keep prices down…. But not with batter and iceberg. 99p for 1slice of plain white bread and butter.

Terrible. Booked for Xmas lunch. Table wasn't set. No Xmas decorations for table. Only 2 members of staff working. Food was cold and disgusting. We ended up leaving and going elsewhere. Totally shocking considering the booking was made in September. The mushroom starters were cold and oozing grease. The main courses were cold and grey cold stuffing is not nice. We will not be back

The system is that you find a table,go to the bar and order your food. Great but the pub was quite busy and there was a wait although I did spot a member of staff having a cup of tea. The food was bang average- deep fried and we noticed quite a few pensioners on for a Christmas lunch.

We love to come here for drinks, food and often treat our young grandchildren to dinner. Over the last few months we have been really disappointed in losing really good staff I.e Pauline, Carol. Abi & others. Adam and Andrew, managers also disappeared recently. Chantelle is really good but there are so may new staff and duty managers. We popped in today with our grandson and a new duty manager Hayden was working alone. A large group of workmen came in and lots of people for drinks and food. He was calm, explained situation to all and worked so hard to please everyone. He is a credit to the company and a lovely guy, wish he could stay.

We regular visit here and until tonight have had little issue. However after booking a table for tonight we arrived to a busy pub. We went to order food and drinks - while waiting at bar heard the manger telling people behind us it was an hour wait and his staff should have stopped orders going through and he had his chef shouting at him. Give him his due He then proceeded to go round tables to tell them. By time he got to our table he said it would be a 90 minute and the Reason given kitchen was too busy as too many orders being put through app - which they couldn’t control. One of my group came to Bar to tell us that just as we were ordering. We cancelled and left. In other establishments priority is given to pre bookings. What is the point of taking bookings? Surely you manage walk ins? A very disappointed regular.

Their new menu started to. We went for lunch. Excellent service/ portion/ value/ surroundings. We will certainly return soon and. Well done to all staff. Back today (27/11/24). Once again excellent lunch/service/value. Be back again soon

Visited recently with big family group. Made to feel very welcome by the staff. Were attentive and good with the kids. Food was excellent. Really enjoyed. First time I’ve felt relaxed eating out with kids in ages! Thank you.

One of the worst orders I've ever receievd. Mac & Cheese was a couple of tablespoons worth & tasted like the tinned stuff. Eggs were overcooked & no peas with the gammon. Squid was dry & chewy, all 6 shrivelled pieces of it. NOT WORTH YOUR MONEY.

I'm revising my review down from 5 stars as I turned up on one of the Cask Ale Club evenings to find that its only on certain ales (some club!). No advance notice of which. Value for money is well below par now. Also when I queried the price the member of staff seemed less than happy to help.

Slow service food not to good today

Staff were incredibly friendly and helpful. Had an issue with applying a discount code on the app but after speaking to a member of staff, it was resolved quickly. Atmosphere was very relaxed. Food was prompt and delicious as always

Had some craft beer on 1st January. Unfortunately they did not let the beer settle. This meant the entirety of 2nd January ill. The food was always awful, so there's no reason to come back.

Excellent food, reasonably priced. Very pleasant and friendly staff. Will definitely be going back.

Food not great holumie fries very heavily salted before we got them chicken burger cold had to ask to be heated up the fries that came with it had also been salted altogether not a very enjoyable experience

We were just so disappointed last night - 01/03/2024. We had family staying and booked a table for Friday eve. 4 adults and a baby. First, there's no one to greet you on arrival and show you where your table is anymore. We went and searched for it ourselves, found our name and time on the table. Fine, but then there was no highchair ready at the table on arrival despite requesting it when we booked the table. The bar was really busy, so instead of queuing to order our food and drink, we ordered through the QR Code/ app. Drinks then took ages to arrive. So did the food. Portion sizes were measly! Not enough scampi and not enough chips on all our plates. Chips also didn't taste of anything at all, just frozen rubbish. We had also ordered a side of roasted vegetables which was embarassingly small for the money. Burgers were just really average too - they used to do some amazing crispy buttermilk chicken burgers but seems they've scrapped them sadly. One of us had upgraded to (and we paid extra for) sweet potato fries but received normal chips by mistake. We told the waitress and then had to remind them several times about the sweet potato fries we had actually ordered, and by the time they arrived nearly 1/2 hour later, we'd all obviously finished our meal by then! Just rubbish service. They were not quick enough - sweet potato fries really don't take even 5 mins in the fryer! No excuse for it, and clearly no thought for the customer experience. I can appreciate they are busy (and clearly understaffed) but if there's a problem with someone's meal, a good pub restaurant would remedy the issue asap! Safe to say - glad we didn't leave a tip! Also weird that the app asks you to tip upon payment before you even get any service/ your food! Very strange. I'm all for supporting local but it was rubbish last night and we definitely won't be returning. It used to be good and now it's awful. Understaffed and no one seems to care about the customers. Maybe it was just an unfortunate Friday night rush but still, could do a lot better.

We booked a room for a surprise 70th birthday party . The staff were great and allowed me to go in earlier and decorate the room and one of the girls was always on hand to check everything was okay. The buffet was absolutely superb and plentiful, and the girls kept topping it up as it went down. The staff were lovely and worked very hard to make sure the afternoon went so well.

None to bad, cheap and cheerfull, staff were nice and the food was non to bad, I've got to be honest not my kind of place but it was friendly and my old Mum loves it in here. So all good

We went here for lunch today , order was placed ,,cutlery was brought to the table ,,no condiments . Our food arrived ,,the fish was swimming in grease, the grease was all around the groove in the plate ,a very small spoonful of mushy peas ( it really wasn't worth the bother),, chips were lukewarm ,but edible . The steak sandwich was okay ,but the chips were cold .!!! No call back to our table ,after our food was brought out ,,the only interaction was when our plates were taken away ,,we said about the chips and the reply was "you have eaten most off it anyway " . Probably won't be back ..

The choeck and beef was dry and the gammon was think and fatty, the potatoes a bit over cooked - the only good bit was the gravy! When you are looking forward to nice Sunday dinner - it was a pure let down

Myself & my partner came for dinner and we both thouroughly enjoyed our meals! The staff were lovely, especially our server Abby.

I pop in here every now an again on a Saturday night for a couple of pints on the way home, and the one thing that lights up the place is the smile and welcome from Beth. The five stars are for her They have 3 real ales on tap, usually a local one, a well known one plus an other. Also the Guinness is okay.

Went to the Justinlees for lunch today Me and my partner both had burgers I had the ultimate burger which was awesome and full of flavour as was the cheese and bacon burger my partner had . First class service from Adam and the staff and a lovely relaxing atmosphere .

VERY disappointed, food only average at best, I ordered Seabass with king prawns, but, firstly seabass was over cooked, but NO king prawns, but I git tiny shrimps, that had no taste, and were barely warm, the saute were not sauté, but deep fried and were also only just warm! I did mention all of this to a waiter, he said he'dtell the kitchen, but he never came back ! That's the problem with these places where you pay up front, they just DON'T care, my wife's burger was also overcooked, and far too small for the bun it was served on ! Take my advice, and go somewhere else !!!

Nice atmosphere. Good service . Food was average. We had the battered mushrooms which tasted greasy with some strange dip followed by Mac n cheese which was nice but a bit dry. For desert we had what was supposed to be salted caramel cheesecake. Tasted nothing like it. Would I return? Perhaps in the evening

Staff were working on a really hot day, no major smiles. Food was all good for allergenics and was delivered quickly and it was hot, a touch shy on the gravy, although rib of beef was so tender and of course all home cooked. Sleepy sunday atmosphere, very nice wee country welcome within the pub.

Lovely place, fantastic food and really good value. Wings to start were amazing, beef rib Sunday lunch incredible but all a little dry. Roast was lovely but needed more gravy. Tiny amount provided and waited 20 mins for more which arrived in a literal egg cup. Also asked 3 times before it arrived. Simplest and cheapest part of the dinner but spoils the whole thing. Also, is cranberry sauce not a thing in Scotland? Pudding was the same, thimble of custard with a lovely crumble.

Enjoyed the food which took more than 45 minutes to come which was far too long. Do not like dogs in a pub..It would be different if the dog section was on one place but it's not and you are sitting there eating your food with a dog looking at you....I think it's awful. Owners need to be more responsible and realise not everyone likes dogs! Will definitely think twice about joing back there if this continues.

Came in on recommendation from a friend who runs the Fox and Hounds in Leeds and wasn't disappointed. Very different vibe but we liked it all the same. Thanks for a great time guys. Love Ember Inns so always Google them when we are going away ☺️

Dropped in to Justinlees Inn for evening meal in order to support local hostelry and having not been in for a couple of years. Found the staff to be totally devoid of personality and lacking in “people”skills. This was evident on my first engagement with them and proved pretty consistent throughout. Food was tasty enough but portions on the small side for costs incurred. A dispute regarding the chosen meal presented and what the menu promised fell on deaf ears. The waitress nonsensically defending the servings and showing absolutely no interest in customer enquiry or satisfaction. Flat mushroom (single ) the size of a ten pence piece(rather than Portobello) and fried tomato(halved) from the “cherry” variety. I could see plenty white china on the plate presented to me. Ambience is potentially good but not much joy exhibited from the staff. Well! - there are enough restaurants in this area which are more deserving of my custom and this will be the case! Just not good enough I’m afraid to say!

Visited Dalkeith Country Park and wanted something to eat on the way back.. found The Justinlees Inn. Clean, tidy , friendly staff. We ordered 2 meals from the 6 and over mains as we do not have big appetites..no frills but both meals were lovely and just the right size to then treat ourselves to a small pudding. Price was fantastic as we both ate for a total of £13! The staff were friendly and the Inn was clean and tidy.

On arrival Pauline showed us to our table, she took our order, she was very polite, friendly, professionally and very easy to talk to. She check a few times that everything was ok and if we needed anything else. I would highly recommend Justinlesss as the food was excellent, the staff were all professional and friendly and the restaurant and toilets was clean and tidy.

I never received this order. Phoned the restaurant and they said it had been picked up. I would like a full refund immediately

Got a Sunday roast last weekend and Been fighting through just eat for a refund due to find hairs in my food but my refund was declined from the restaurant I find it shocking that to decline it after providing photos have been going here for year won’t be back her is a phot if the proof of hair 45 I spent on 3 meals and no even have the decency to own up to there mistake

Tried for the second time. utter rubbish again, soup cold, so all eating at different times, no gammon so half the table had to choose different meal. Main courses came, peas were stone cold so had to send back again, had to wait 10 mins for dinners to come back, so all eating at different times again and when they returned, rest of dinner cold. Complained to staff and asked to see manager, was told they were short in kitchen but he was too busy upstairs?, some manager!. Had to ask for desserts, waited another 15 mins they came but no cutlery!!, had to go to bar and ask due to waiting time, ice cream had melted by that point. POOR SHOW AGAIN MANAGER ADAM, COULD AT LEAST HAVE CAME DOWN TO EXPLAIN OR APOLOGISE. UTTER RUBBISH, POOR MANA GEMENT, AVOID 2 stars for staff, not their fault. Zero for management. Never be back to Mitchell and Butler justinlees and good mind to complain directly to seeing if I get response from them as manager ADAM not interested. Too many bad reviews, we can't all be wrong.

Very cool place! I recommend it to everyone, you can simply order via the QR code on the table or on the menu (but of course you don't have to) You can also pay immediately on the website. The food is very delicious, the place is cozy, the staff is very nice and friendly. Unfortunately, they ran out of bacon when we were there, so it was left out of the hamburger, but in return they immediately invited us both for a free round of drinks.😋🥰

Booked for a family of 8 today (Sunday, Father's Day) to be told at 6.15pm that there were no roast dinners left. Considering we had booked (£40 deposit!!), and the early time, this is completely unacceptable. After being informed of this, since there isn't really an alternative to a roast dinner, and 6 of us wanted to order a roast of some kind, we just decided it would be best to leave. Our drinks and deposit were refunded quickly, however this of course didn't make up for a family meal ruined. My grandparents regularly eat here due to how accessible it is for a wheelchair, however they and the rest of us will not be back due to this experience. How this could happen on a notoriously busy Sunday is beyond me.

I've only just moved to the whitecraig area in musselburgh but work in Edinburgh so when my bus is late I've started to nip in here for a few pints of belhaven best which I'm glad they serve as the previous bar I was calling into didn't. The place is very clean very nice I'd imagine to have a meal which I will be doing soon with my partner and my 2 year old daughter. Service is great staff pretty friendly so no complaints. As I said looking forward to something to eat in here as when food has passed me it looks very good 👍

Just back from a family dinner. Food nice everyone enjoyed it. The service was a bit slow.dont think they had enough staff on tonight as I only saw 2 waitresses and the place was very busy.

The Justinlees is my regular haunt with my partner and dog when we are out for a drink in Dalkeith. It’s a lovely, large pub in Eskbank and caters to lots of people, from those who just want a quick drink, to family meals, to birthday gatherings and to those who want to catch the rugby. The drinks are varied, they have lots of different options here, beers, wine, champagne, cocktails, shots, soft drinks and more - and they are happy to make something custom to you. For example, sometimes my partner wants a shot of peanut butter sheepdog in a glass of coke. This isn’t on the menu but they were more than happy to make it for us. Drinks are a little pricier than other local pubs but the atmosphere is a lot more luxurious than some other pubs. They have nice food too; often with pubs, food is an afterthought and consists of cheap cooked from frozen ready meals, such as fish and chips and pie and mash. The Justinlees offers these dishes too, among many more, but they are as different as night is from day, and cooked from fresh and served with care. I had one bad experience when ordering sausages (I got food poisoning) but ever since I have stuck to the chicken burger or ribs and I’ve been fine. The puddings are good too, especially the sticky toffee pudding and vegan cheesecake (which might be vegan but tastes fab to a meat eater!) There was also an occasion where a last minute change needed to be made to my sisters’ pudding (from cream to ice cream) and this was absolutely fine. There is also a nifty QR code system on the tables for ordering food, but personally I’ve never used it as I like the staff and ordering at the bar. There is not table service here apart from when they bring the food out. Once or twice I’ve had to chase up the desserts but it was no big deal. As I mentioned earlier, the pub is dog friendly and Luna, our Staffie mix is always welcome here. Dogs are always kept on the leash and there is a designated ‘dog friendly’ part of the pub, as well as multiple entrances, so if you are scared of dogs this shouldn’t be an issue as they can be avoided. Luna always had a fuss made of her when the staff see her, and despite her occasionally silly behaviour, she is always welcomed with a warm smile and fresh water and treats from their self-serve dog treat station, which is always out and located next to the bar. If you can’t find it the friendly staff will be happy to help. Special mention to the landlady/ lady who works there who is English, and wears a sunflower lanyard. She often stops to chat to us and gives Luna biscuits when she sees us. She always remembers us and Luna and makes a big fuss of her. One suggestion is to put on social media/ their website when the pub has got a rugby match or football match on, as with my autism I struggled with the loud noise from fans last time. All in all, the Justinlees is a great pub, and one of mine, my partners and Luna’s favourite places to be. Julia

Booked a table for my birthday,wanted a quiet time for the two of us ,food was excellent and the service very good,enough to say we will be back

A very good address, we stumbled upon it by chance but were won over by everything. Prices are reasonable (with attractive menus) and the food is very good. We also discovered that they organize events and quiz nights, so we'll have to come back again.

what kind of idiot would pour gravy into cardboard box for delivery. unacceptable. couldn't eat cardboard stuck to food. absolute joke.

We were a table of 4. Two of us waited 30 mins. The 3rd meal came 10 later and 4th meal came about 10 mins after that. 2 of us had completely finished our meal before the party meal came out. The chicken burger was dry. The vegetarian pie was over cooked with a tiny bit of filling. The gammon was OK and the last dish was so late in coming the my friend just felt so rushed to eat it cos we were all finished before hers came. This is the 2nd disappointing meal I've had here so won't be back x
