Very friendly staff. The service was quick - and cheerful. Nothing was too much bother for them and it was good value for money.

This is our second visit, was too early for an atmosphere that’s why we marked 4 stars, Andrea our server was very attentive and clearly an asset to the restaurant, only other 4 star was my husbands sausages and gravy, Grey rubbery sausages with no taste whatsoever, however our dog loved them when we got home. Sorry we don’t like giving reviews like this but guys change your supplier they are awful

Acknowledged at the front door as soon as we entered, shown to our seats and handed menus. Asked if we would like to order drinks which we did and then order taken for our meals. Slight delay on the drinks for some reason and didn’t come till just before our meals. Meals arrived very quickly and as per usual very lovely. Staff were very attentive. Will definitely be back

Very pleasent place in a hidden quiet location. The staff was great except a minor detail. We asked for an orange juice without ice, but it came with. However, this happens almost everywhere we go and it was just a minor nuisance. Instead the food was great. We had cheese burger, Hunter's chicken and 2 different pizzas and everyone was amazed by the quality of the food! Definitely we'll return for more.

I have been to the old colliery a good few times they put on some fantastic events for the kids,my daughter loves them, the staff are soo helpful nothing is ever to much for them, the food is amazing aswell always hot and on time will keep coming back again and again Jamie is a very good server as well

First time having dinner at the old colliery, we loved the place, the service was really nice and kind, we enjoyed a delicious food and dessert. They are doing a 30% off during January. Easy to park, children areas and dog friendly. Highly recommend it, we will be back.

Used the Ionity charging point recently installed at this location.

They advertise 2 main meals for one...but prices are higher on main meals to pay for this☹ so basically your not getting a good deal at all ! £16 odds, for basic fish and chips in a Roadside establishment!!! Can buy cheaper in lovely restaurants in Central Edinburgh. We won't be back.

We had a lovely family meal - Andrea was a fantastic host and was kind enough to put through a special order for my son. We have never had a bad meal here, and the staff are unfailingly accommodating and friendly.

A great family bar. The little kids corner is perfect for our 4 year old and his friends, allowing us to have a proper catch up with friends, and I will be recommending it to others. The only reason for 4 stars is that on our visit yesterday we used the online order system, but it seems to not be working to a high standard - we had to wait a long time for some orders and some of them were wrong. When we had our orders taken by staff during previous visits we didn’t have this issue.

This is our fourth time at the old colliery, the food & service is great as usual, great base to use for Edinburgh as we can't get under the high barriers for the park & ride with our campe, nothing seems to be to much trouble for the staff, cheers keep it up

Food was a lot better than expected, fair prices and service from Sam and Alex was great.

We have been going to the old Colliery for a few years now and never had a problem with the place, but this visit was terrible, there was a vegan in the party she ordered her lunch from the festive menu on doing that they had put a meat pigs in blanket on her plate on top of the vegetables, when she asked if her meal was meant to have a pigs in blanket they said no and didn’t offer a replacement meal or money off the bill, she has now been vomiting since the visit as she hasn’t eaten meat for over 30years. So this was a dry disappointing visit. So be aware vegetarian/vegans when ordering.

Service was very slow took an hour for our food to get to us after ordering, when the food did come out it was of poor standards cold and not what the menu stated, this was my first time here and it will be my last I would not recommend to any off my friends either

Santa Paws Really good event. Wasn't just a dog event Everyone received a warm welcome including our Grandaughter. We had 2 dogs with us who were really relaxed as we're all of the dogs who attended. First time visiting, on a Sunday was told at around 4pm no Roast Beef available now come on itsSunday start of a dinner evening so my partner and her eldest daughter picked the Roast Chicken, both pourtions came out frozen in the middle. I had steak which I asked for to be done medium, came out raw blood coming out it I don’t know I’ve it’s a change of chef or what but they seriously need to pull there socks up or they will loose lots of business.Not one person even apologised!!! But the positive was the young waiter was good and we didn’t have to fit the bill.

Nice pub grub. Our first time eating here yesterday afternoon around 3pm. Tucked away behind the SQA building at Danderhall. The place had a nice calm, welcoming feel. There were a few others dining too. Sam showed us to a table and came back to take our order, all the staff were pleasant and seemed relaxed. Thursday is a 'steak special' with a drink upgrade for just £1. Hubby had an 8oz beef rump steak done rare with chips, peas, mushrooms and tomato with a pint of Guinness. It was cooked just right. He enjoyed it and said "next time" he'll go for the sirloin and have a sauce with it. I chose the gammon steak which was beautifully cooked along with a fried egg and pineapple ring, chips, tomato and peas. A soft drink finished it off nicely. Could've had 2 eggs or 2 pineapple, so one of each nicely balanced. There are 'specials' Mon to Fri and all in all a good first experience at the Old Colliery. They have wee play areas both inside and out for kiddies as well as outside tables to eat at, if you're well wrapped up in this weather. Glad we tried this place. A few years ago we went one lunchtime but couldn't find the way in!!! It looked deserted then.Better signposted now. Glad of that.

Nipped in for a unplanned dinner, was seated quickly. Andrea the server was lovely. Nice chilled atmosphere. Food was really nice came out hot and cooked really well !!

Simple pub grub type place over a large site. Lots of pub regular dishes on offer. All that we ordered was served in good time and tasted as it should. Decent enough pub option comparable to Elginhaugh nearby

Me and my friend who was told about here from another guy , we came over to Scotland with a motorhome and had steak , chips and pints , was great and definitely recommend.

Our second stop at the Old Colliery in the campervan. We can park in their car park in exchange for having a meal in the pub. The meals are great, good-sized portions, and served promptly. We first stopped here on our honeymoon, Nov 2023, and it was nice to be back this year on the week of our first anniversary - on our way back down to home after touring the Fife area. We will no doubt be coming back again next year! Thanks for having us again 👍

First time visiting today. Pleasantly surprised when we walked in. Very clean and well maintained. Staff were very friendly. We were very impressed that this was a pet friendly facility. Our drinks order was taken very quickly as was our food order. The food came really quickly despite the fact that it was pretty busy and we had not booked a table. The food was brilliant. We had fish and gammon and we couldn’t fault it. Dessert and coffee was also served quickly and was great. Five stars to the Old Colliery Shawfair. We will be back ❤️

Stopped for lunch - food was nice, restaurant is clean with a cosy feel and the team were very attentive as well as serving food and drinks promptly. Would definitely recommend and return in future. Was given a QR code but have misplaced it - I believe we were served by the GM who was happy to have a chat before we left.

The food is amazing with a great selection on the menu. The staff are attentive and friendly and professional. Overall the restaurant has a nice feel to it, warmly with a cozy atmosphere.

Lovely place, staff very helpful, food ok, but why do they have to have a pool table bang in the middle of the dining area. Surely this can be put in a more secluded space away from People trying to eat. It is anoying !!

Cosy, local pub, we loved it when we moved to Shawfair. Unfortunately food here lately is very disappointing… small portions, luck of flavour. Portion of Sunday Roast with beef was shocking for the price. Pizza was dry with cheap ingredients. We gave that place so many chances, but we won’t be coming back for food…Compare to other local pubs like Elginhaugh across the bypass where food is much cheaper and tastier…

Have been dining at the Old Colliery for a while and now and have always an outstanding experience. From the moment we walked in, the atmosphere was warm and inviting, with just the right lighting and decor that created a cozy, relaxed vibe. The menu is diverse, with plenty of options that made choosing a challenge—in the best way! Our server many times has been Andrea and she is always attentive, friendly, and very knowledgeable about the menu, offering helpful recommendations and making sure we had everything we needed. The entire staff seemed genuinely happy to be there, which made the whole experience even better. Overall, the Old Colliery always exceeds my expectations, and I’m already looking forward to my next visit. Highly recommend to anyone looking for a special dining experience!

We were at The old Colliery for dinner and it was a lovely experience. The food was braw and the restaurant was nice and clean. Andrea (one of the waitresses) is just so bubbly and chatty and nothing was too much trouble for any of the staff. This is the best dog friendly pub I have found locally, they even have a doggy menu. Will defo be back

We booked a table for Sunday lunch but there was no need as this new Marston's pub was very quiet on arrival. We ordered a starter and Roast beef lunch. Food came quickly. Good quantities but wasn't particularly flavoursome. Piped music a little on the loud side for us. Pleasant staff who regularly checked all was well. Good value at under £50 including two coffees and two alcohol free drinks.

Food was cold even after sending it back

Popped in for a coffee before attending a nearby hospital. Also to book table for a meal after that appointment. Firstly our booking was taken by a waitress then we were told by a manager that no tables were able to be booked as there was a kids Halloween party on at 1700hrs. So we sat as directed at a nearby table for our coffee. Before we had even finished at 1520hrs, we were asked to move tables as the area was needed to set up sound equipment for the party. All in all, it was hardly friendly and welcoming and staff seemed disinterested at best. We usually visit the Marstens in Dunfermline and can honestly say there is a huge chasm between the two venues. Certainly won't be visiting the Old Colliery again!

Great place for grub and a couple bevy’s

It was a quiet afternoon. Food was tasty enough (pub grub). Service was good. Friendly and attentive staff.

We stayed in the car park in our Camper on Saturday and Sunday evening. We called ahead to check this was ok and the staff member on the phone was friendly and helpful. We didn’t get chance to go into the pub until Sunday evening. However, every time we interacted with any staff they were so friendly and the leaflet we were given with the bus details was so helpful. The food we had when we did visit was just what we needed after walking round the City all day. Absolutely fabulous pub, fab staff and a brilliant place for a stopover in our Camper. Thank you so much.

My friend and I eat here every week. The food is always good and it is very reasonably priced. Usually we are served by the lovely Andrea, who is always cheery and has plenty of chat.

Haven't been here for a while it's a nice place, food was nice, didn't have long to wait to get shown to a table. They have different offers on each day of the week.

Andrea was lovely, made for a nice atmosphere, was very helpful and pleasant. Nice seating area. Good options from lunch light menu which was perfect portions for us especially on a hot summer's day. The fish and chips I had were excellent beautiful fresh fish perfectly cooked with light crisp batter and crispy chips washed down with wee fruity class of house white. My mum had the gammon steak which she loved and the scampi for my Aunty also well received. 3 people, two courses each, 2 wines and one soft drink for just under £50 with excellent service and nice surroundings what's not to like.

Very uninterested staff, make sure there isn't a family fun day as the music is so loud you can't have a conversation.

We had lunch and drink in the late evening as well. Food was OK, nothing special but still good quality. Service was fast and perfect. Really kind staff, helpful and patient (we're German and didn't understand everything in the first place, but things were explained a second and third time when needed). The toilets were clean, at lunch and nighttime. We could spend the night in the carpark with our campervan. The staff even gave us a paper with helpful information about public transport to the city centre. The carpark was quite at night, great sleep. The place is also very dog-friendly. Treats, water and even meals available. The only thing that we didn't like was the coffee. It looked and tasted lime too much water and too little coffee.

Food was very good and piping hot. The service was quick and the venue had a pleasant atmosphere. The staff were cheery and both of our servers were helpful

My wife and I visited on 9 September. The food was as good as always and the service by Sam was great. Love coming here.
