Old Colliery in Midlothian

This was a disappointing visit. The previous occasions we have been staff have been attentive, helpful and chatty. The young girl who took our food order was lovely but the lad behind the bar was a bit surly. Had to wait to be seated in near empty restaurant, had to wait whilst he faffed about with an ornament to answer a question and weren't asked if we wanted more drinks. We were seated next to quiz in near empty restaurant. Perhaps should have been asked if that was okay but instead we had to ask to move seats when quiz started. Overall a very different experience from what we've had before. Hopefully just a one off and with that one member of staff. Food was also slightly disappointing but that could have been the choice. We've visited quite a few times but this was a very different experience to others.

All staff were very attentive and friendly. The food was very good and reasonably priced. We didn't wait long for our food. We enjoyed gammon steaks, rump steak and fish and chips. Followed by sweets which were all enjoyable. A good experience all round.

They advertise 2 main meals for one...but prices are higher on main meals to pay for this☹ so basically your not getting a good deal at all ! £16 odds, for basic fish and chips in a Roadside establishment!!! Can buy cheaper in lovely restaurants in Central Edinburgh. We won't be back.

Been here a few times, but very disappointed with yesterdays visit. After having a couple of drinks first, we then decided to order food. Got told we would need to wait at least an hour for food, after standing at the bar discussing it, we then told that barman that was fine. We would order our food and have another couple of drinks while we waited on the food. After hearing us discussing this, he then decided that we would have to now wait 20 mins BEFORE ordering and THEN wait over an hour for food. There were 4 of us and we all felt he just wanted rid of us. So we moved on elsewhere, very disappointing 😞

Celebrating 21 years of Lothian Disability Sport (Archery) all our 21 members dining agreed that they were well served and well fed. Thank you to Chef and Staff.

Amazing staff friendly. Clean, food great, very good selection of food. But riadr dinner on a Sunday was amazing. . We have three motorhome and stayed for two nights. Level ground, lots of places for cars also. Manager excellent and friendly. Would use this pub everytime we are hear. Prefect pub.

I’ve started to use The Old Colliery recently, as a stop off point on any journey, due to the new electric car chargers being installed right next to it. Very friendly staff, dogs are made to feel very welcome and are always made a fuss of, food is good and pretty swift to come. A good find. Thank you.

Quality of food was poor. 4 dinners and we all had a 2 courses. We got the sharing loaded fries and the topping was minimal. I had the beef chilli which was ok. Service was good and the staff were very helpful. I wouldn’t go back as the cost versus the quality was not good enough

Had a lovely meal - and very attentive staff taking and delivering our order. From Andrea taking it, Alex delivering and Sam behind the bar knowing our order within 30 mins of being there.

Came here for lunch with kids. Fish and chips were good, they also have a good selection on the kids menu. The staff were friendly and nice, sat us next to a little children play area too so my boy could play quietly before and after food. Will come back again! Reasonably priced too.

Went back once the manager and his wife were back of holiday.what a difference .service great,food was amazing ,I had the chicken platter with ribs .reccomend. every body in my party enjoyed,it was a pleasure to eat there.

Welcomed by staff, drinks order taken right away, good choice of meals, didn't have to wait too long. Macaroni was yummy! Main meal of burger could have been served hotter. Brother was happy with his choice of starters and great that they came out with my main!

We came for Friday night dinner after a busy working week and had a lovely meal, our burgers were delicious and the couple of pints even more so! We would highly recommend for a pub tea or just for a few drinks! Excellent friendly service from Sam!

Called in for lunch .Very disappointing.Husband asked for pint of orange squash and got half pint of very weak watery liquid.Hunters chicken ..very little sauce and chicken dry and tough.My steak pie was all thick shortcrust pastry ,and meat was not nice..Have eaten here before,but after this experience will not be back.

Food and service were excellent sam and alex were fantastic, we had our campervan, they gave us water and let us use the car park since we were eating there, which we were more than happy with, will be back again thanks

I have been to the old colliery a good few times they put on some fantastic events for the kids,my daughter loves them, the staff are soo helpful nothing is ever to much for them, the food is amazing aswell always hot and on time will keep coming back again and again Jamie lee was so helpful in everything great asset to the team thanks will be back again

Stopped in for lunch on the way into Edinburgh for the day, had an absolutely fantastic time! JamieLee was outstanding, he was attentive yet not overbearing and nothing was too much trouble. We had the Cowboy burger and fish and chips, both were excellent! Would 10/10 recommend to friends and family. Thank you to all the team!

We eat regularly at the Old Colliery because the food, service and friendly staff are all first class. My granddaughter enjoys her visits as she loves the burgers. We are normally served by Andrea who always looks after us very well and is my granddaughters favourite person.

Really disappointed with the overall experience we had today. We've been going to the old colliery frequently since it opened but won't be returning. Today we went with our teenage son, we were seated in the child area, squeezed into a space where a ten top had been booked next to us, providing very little space especially when the children at the table where up and down every second. Obviously expected in a family area but very disappointing when other tables where avaliable but staff appeared and disappeared quickly so we could not raise our concerns or request a new table. The table was dirty and sticky. The menus where digusting, torn, sticky, unclean, covered in food. As it was lunchtime we expected the lunch time menu which was advertised on the large chalkboard but the main menu was provided. No biggie BUT when my nearly £8 sandwich arrived and looked vile on cheap white basic bread. I was disappointed to say the least. My microwaved soup that had clearly exploded and was all over the bowl looked unappealing especially with the additional £5 cost for it, I had asked to swap the chips to soup and would happily play a surcharge to upgrade but did not expected to pay full price and then recieved no chips with the sandwich as advertised. The communication was lacking from staff. The sandwich had been left under the heat lamps so had become dry and warm, but only on one side. The pizza had also been left under the heat lamps for a substantial amount of time and weren't the best as a result. Really disappointing when it comes to a restaurant we visit frequently. Paying the bill was a long process, staff disappeared again and after standing at the bar for more time just waiting for someone they eventually arrived. After a meal that wasn't the greatest we just wanted to leave.

We stayed in the campervan for two nights in the car park. The team have been very friendly and helpful. The area is safe and open. There's a Coop and park and ride into Edinburgh across the road.

Food was terrible. Everything else about Old Colliery ticks all the boxes but the food was so bad I'll not be returning. We ordered a side of Mac and Cheese and it was 100% from a tin. Absolute cheeky charging £5+ for something that was from a tin costing less than a pound. Burgers were the saddest thing I've ever seen. Menu lures you into complete propaganda. Real shame as its great for the the kids and the aesthetic of the venue makes you feel like the food would be better quality and worth the high price tag they put on to very low quality food items & presentation

Dropped by for dinner and some drinks, and the food was very tasty. I think the burgers are particularly reliably good. The quality of the food and decoration have improved since new management took over.

Yeah, we ate here last Xmas and food was terrific. A bit disappointing yesterday. Pie was meat free and chicken overcooked plus bacon more fat than meat. Gin without ice not too good either

Staff were great but food was not, the Steak pie was exactly like the ones from Iceland, shortcrust pastry with no meat, so dry, as was the chicken, i couldnt get through it with the knife. The chips were cold as were the peas, we have been here a few times before and enjoyed but this time we wont be back 😪

Sunday lunch, what a joke. To start with glasses for soft drinks dirty, returned to the bar, aww it's the dishwasher was the excuse given, couldn't find a clean one. 40 min wait for starters. Starter plates taken away, 10 mins later came back asking if we wanted main courses. Mains arrived cold and were sent back. Mains arrived again veg cold still, steak pie had 2 small pieces of meat and full of congealed gravy. Looked like a cheap and nasty pie. Could not eat meal, will not be returning. Another 2 tables also complained about meal being cold and pie was cheap . Dirty serving dishes also

Been using the Old Colliery for quite a while now. 3 of us regularly. Myself on occasions. Food is always good. Reasonably priced. Staff always friendly. Great to see it is children and pet friendly. There's a play area for the kids. Décor is varied with old photos,painting and old artifacts. Watch out for Andrea, always smiling and joking and showing of her fancy nails.

Went at lunch time on Tuesday 25th February and there were a handful of people in. Efficient service and food was typical pub grub (we had jacket spud with prawn Marie Rose) & our wee dog was able to join us inside which was good.

Haven't been here for a while it's a nice place, food was nice, didn't have long to wait to get shown to a table. They have different offers on each day of the week.

Staff were miserable, food didn't taste fresh, roast beef was horrible and tasted like it had been sat for ages. Had to swap with my husband. Overall didn't enjoy our experience

My son loves the kids area in the old colliery. Meals are always nice, fast service, fairly priced, But most of all the staff are super friendly, Andrea makes you feel super at home and nothing is a bother.

Andrea was a great waitress. Nothing too much trouble despite her being run off her feet on a busy Saturday night.

This is our second visit, was too early for an atmosphere that’s why we marked 4 stars, Andrea our server was very attentive and clearly an asset to the restaurant, only other 4 star was my husbands sausages and gravy, Grey rubbery sausages with no taste whatsoever, however our dog loved them when we got home. Sorry we don’t like giving reviews like this but guys change your supplier they are awful

We stayed in our motorhome on the car park for 2 nights. We wanted to visit a friend in Edinburgh Royal Infirmary. The bus stop across the road took us straight there, very convenient. The bus would also take you into the city centre. The staff were very friendly and couldn’t have been more helpful. The pub is clean and welcoming. The menu was extensive, Wednesday was a curry and a drink special for £12.50. Thursday was a steak and a drink. They don’t charge for staying in your motorhome but like you to have a meal in the pub each night. You need your own facilities. A very good stay, highly recommended

Acknowledged at the front door as soon as we entered, shown to our seats and handed menus. Asked if we would like to order drinks which we did and then order taken for our meals. Slight delay on the drinks for some reason and didn’t come till just before our meals. Meals arrived very quickly and as per usual very lovely. Staff were very attentive. Will definitely be back

Very pleasent place in a hidden quiet location. The staff was great except a minor detail. We asked for an orange juice without ice, but it came with. However, this happens almost everywhere we go and it was just a minor nuisance. Instead the food was great. We had cheese burger, Hunter's chicken and 2 different pizzas and everyone was amazed by the quality of the food! Definitely we'll return for more.

Gluten free options thank you. All ingredients very clear on website via qr code provided by restaurant. Staff very helpful. We'll be back. Highly recommend.
