Was very excited about this as we had been wanting to try here for a while but we were very disappointed with the food. Gorgeous setting, friendly staff, really great potential here but the food was such a let down. We both ordered the hens egg for starter, not expecting it to be served cold, it was certainly interesting, served with cold mushrooms, soggy croutons and a slice of truffle which I though was a strange combo and although it didn’t taste bad it definitely wasn’t great. For mains I had the duck breast which was overdone and chewy, they served it with a whole apple which I thought was bizarre, mushrooms (the same ones we had with the starter) which wasn’t listed on the menu and also didn’t go very well, celeriac fondant which was basically not cooked, I couldn’t eat it and had to ask for a steak knife to cut through any of it. My partner got the cod tortellini (which came with one piece of tortellini). It really wasn’t nice either and the sauce that came with it was watery and tasteless and not what you’d expect from “fine dining” restaurant. The dessert was tonka bean crème brûlée with textures of carrot - again just bizarre flavours that didn’t go with each other and not a hint of carrot. Another thing that kind of annoyed me in a so called fine dining restating was the fake candles, really cheap and tacky looking. Overall I give this 2/5 for the nice setting and nice staff but a total waste of money food wise, they are trying to be fancy and really the food is just a shambles and doesn’t compare to other fine dining restaurants I have eaten in.

We were asked to arrive to the bar 30 minutes before dining. We were left just to sit there and unnecessarily order drinks and select our food before waiting about 45 minutes to be taken down to the restaurant. Unfortunately both the entree and main were extremely bad, especially for the high price. I do not mind paying money for good food, but my main tasted like a Tescos pre-made three bean salad with lamb (that had no flavour). The flavours were not balanced at all, all bitter elements. We then had an underwhelming and inedible cheese course and asked to cancel our desserts as we did not want any further disappointments for the evening.

This was an absolutely fantastic place. The drinks were soo fresh, the food was stunning, and the staff was superb. I felt terrible because the table next to us was so belittling and rude to the fantastic waitress every chance they had. I’m impressed at how positive she remained throughout the whole ordeal. They also surprised us with champagne and a cute “congratulations” dessert for our honeymoon. Definitely go here is you can

We had such an enjoyable dining experience at the Dungeon. The chef was very accommodating to our dietary restrictions and our meals were superb! The whole experience ….starting with drinks and appetizers in the drawing room all the way through dessert…. was wonderful. The appetizers were visually appealing and tasty, our main dish satisfying and desserts playful and interactive. The Dungeon had great atmosphere and the service was attentive.

Food itself is good although limited and the restaurant itself is amazing - it’s just that the service by the staff is a bit ‘off’ - found this throughout the hotel as well during our 3 day stay. No sort of social communication with you, a smile, an acknowledgment of your presence etc and certainly no offer to get you a drink - it’s almost like your invisible 🤷♀️ - you’re there to eat and get out which is sad. If you can grab someone to get you a drink with your meal - it will eventually come but you get no acknowledgement of you speaking to them or interaction - she was off before my husband could even ask his drink so ended up just not having one - it’s so strange - it’s just the very weird social interaction interaction by the staff that put me off and made me feel s bit uncomfortable - even if English isn’t their first language they could at least smile, make eye contact etc. Most bizarre service!

The food itself was good, but it was over-priced for the portions you receive. I also didn't like that the menu was very limited. I understand COVID and it's issues, but you weren't able to change out any sides. I ended up leaving hungry still and went to our room and snacked on crackers I had packed. The food was displayed very nicely though, so there's that.

Absolutely loved our evening in the fantastically theatrical, imaginatively furnished, candle-lit Dungeon restaurant (our waiter eventually admitted that it had in fact been the stables, but never mind!) Excellent, good value food, attentive, friendly service and a great atmosphere. Rump of lamb with slow-roasted rolled shoulder was particularly good, followed by an excellent cheese selection.

Such an interesting experience when you first enter this awesome dungeon. Was really excited about the restaurant and it did not let us down at all. First night they played smooth Frank Sinatra and on our second visit smooth piano. Candlelight’s were so romantic even though we were just two friends visiting. Waiter’s were wearing masks and gloves by all times and were very attentive but at the same time did not rush any guests. The food was tasty, because displayed and had that extra touch to it. If you stay at the Castle or is in the area a visit is needed! :)

Dalhousie makes a great initial impression, but it fades quickly. The service is well below what you might expect. There is no polish or finesse. I think they imported a McDonalds Team. The dungeon restaurant is fun, no WiFi of course, but the suits of army are both filthy and rusty. The food is good but there is something missing. Might have something to go with it being served on brown earthenware (no pop!). To be honest, I thought the food was better at Wagamamas and certainly less expensive. The rest of the castle can be described as fading glory, not enough furniture, a feeling of mend and make do. It needs more capital spent on it to bring it upto full potential.

This restaurant offers a fine dining experience in the former dungeons of a Scottish Castle. We had dinner during a short break at the Dalhousie Castle Hotel. The Dungeon is one of two restaurants at the hotel. We waited in one of the hotel parlour rooms (library bar closed due to Covid-19) where drink and food orders were taken. Drinks were served while we waited to be escorted to our table. The decor featured armour and lighting that added to the authenticity of the venue. Food was great. For starters we had the tomato soup (standout, had it warm, velvety smooth and delicious) and duck (lovely textures and flavour, attractively plated). The mains were butternut gnocchi (great vegetarian option and another standout) and haddock (good but not exceptional). Dessert- cheese plate (nice selection and great end to meal) and eclair (very pleasing). Recommended for a special occasion

I wanted to treat my husband for his birthday and I knew this would be the perfect place. We had to be in the library bar 30 minutes before dining in the restaurant. We were served canapés as we ordered both our drinks and food. After the canapés, we were then called down to the restaurant and was escorted down. As it was a surprise, both myself and my husband were bowled over by the decor and how it felt like you were in a dungeon (quite authentic). The service we received was impeccable and the food was excellent. I can certainly say we were very spoilt indeed. I would definitely love to return again!!

We were sent to the Dungeon at Dalhousie after the Taste of Scotland closed early for the season. I checked the website beforehand; the place and the menu looked great. The place was great. The food left a bit to be desired. It was okay, but nothing to write home about. The website clearly featured "dinner with wine pairings." When we asked for the pairings, our waiter acted like he'd never heard of such a thing. The wines we got were insipid. One of our servers had strong body odor. All in all, it was a letdown. I hope this was just an off night, because the environment was really cool.

Before coming to the restaurant, I feared it would be an overpriced tourist trap. It was not in the least. Our meal was one of the finest I have ever experienced. The service was not slow as some other reviewers have mentioned. The chef took great care in preparing each plate and with a superior attention to detail. The food and experience truly exceeded my expectations. Even though The Dungeon wasn't technically the dungeon, the ambiance was lovely.

One of the must do things when I go to Scotland is to have dinner in the Dungeon at Dalhousie Castle. I have done it about 7-8 times and whenever I take someone new they always rave about it. The menu changes constantly, so I cannot recommend anything (although this time I had Loin of Lamb and it was terrific!). You start the night in the library with drinks and complementary apps with a beautiful view of the grounds. the food is always top notch. We always go an hour early for a walk around the grounds to the Falconry. The dungeon dates back to the 1300's and is about as quaint and different as you can get. It is a pretty expensive place, but we always set aside a nice fancy night to eat here on our trips and it has always been worth it. The Dungeon does get warm.

Never wrote a review before and never thought I would, but had to after visiting the Dungeon at Dalhousie. Firstly we were sat in a smoked filled room for pre drinks and canapes. There was a fire but didnt appear to be a chimney and therefore smoke was belching into the room. Very uncomfortable as it stung the eyes and also clung to your clothes. The canapes (pea puree with a champagne foam and parmasan crisp and olives) was basically a shot of cold pea puree with foam on top and a big mini cheddar. Pretty disappointed, but hard to enjoy anything in that enviroment. The actual meal was very nice but at £49.50 for three courses the portion size was ridiculous. I ordered smoked salmon as a starter and was served a wafer thin slice of salmon, about 5 cm long, and a tiny salad. Cleared the plate with two fork fulls. My wife had onion soup which was nice. For main I had dover sole, again a small portion, was very nice though apart from the warm red grapes that were served with it which just tasted weird. My wife had cod and again it tasted nice but portion was small. I had cheese to finish which was good but its just cheese and crackers. My wife had lime drizzle cake. Was a tiny dry tasteless sponge finger with a scoop of ice cream and a dry inedible slice of pineapple. That dessert was the only one we thought was poor. The service was also very slow we asked for drinks three times and they finally arrived 20 minutes later. We also ordered a bottle of still water and as they didnt have any, were given a jug of tap water. When the bill came, at £140, we were charged £5 for a bottle of water. The whole experience was an expensive disappointment and I thought I should let people know.

We arrived at the venue but with no staff around to tell us otherwise we went down to the restaurant (luckily one of the party knew where it was), at the restaurant we were then told we should have gone upstairs to the library first to look at the menu so we were escorted up there. Our waiter disappeared and after around 10 mins we went to find someone to see if we could order a drink. Drinks order was taken and then the waiter disappeared again, eventually got the drinks around 25 mins after arriving (too long!). The meal in itself was lovely and we had no complaints about the food. It was very quiet however and so we were in a room by ourselves, so somewhat lacking in atmosphere. Towards the end of our meal (we were eating dessert), our waiter asked if we could settle up our bill as his shift was finishing & someone else would be taking over serving us. That is downright weird, it's the kind of thing I would expect going to a run of the mill chain restaurant, not somewhere that is pitching itself as fine dining! It wouldn't personally stop me going back but something they should take note of, as it's not a great experience.

From start to finish (almost three hours) this was a great experience. The Dungeon Restaurant is part of Dalhousie Castle so as you approach you are treated to the view of a traditional Scottish Castle set in its own grounds with accompanying falconry. The dining experience (certainly not just a meal) began in the library. We decided to go with the taster menu and were served drinks and aperitifs there before being taken down to the restaurant for the rest of our meal. When asked if we had any allergies/dislikes I mentioned not wanting the garlic sauce with one of the courses. The staff arranged this and also for an alternate aperitif as one of those included garlic which we were not aware of which was very good of them. The restaurant itself is decorated with various medieval armour and arms and lit by candle light giving quite an intimate and unusual atmosphere. The food was excellent and balanced very well. There were a couple of items we did not like but that is what a taster menu is about (if you don't try you don't know) and overall it was a great experience with seven courses. The staff were very friendly and the meal was not rushed with plenty of time between courses to enjoy them properly. I would definitely recommend this as a superb place for a special occasion. Slightly more than we would normally spend on a meal but worth it for the whole experience.

From the minute you arrive at the castle, taken to the library and then down to the dungeon restaurant not a lot to say except SUPERB. I have been there 4 times for a meal and cannot fault the food or the service. Cannot wait until my next visit which is next week.

I recently ate in the dungeon restaurant as I was given a gift voucher for Christmas. The good- beautiful restaurant, beautiful location and outstanding food. The bad- I booked my table for 19:30 and did not get taken into the restaurant until 21:00. They take you to the library for pre drinks and to order your food as part of the experience once there we noticed the hotel guests were getting served first. We spoke to one couple who were staying there and did not make a reservation and they told us they couldn't get a table until 21:30 however the hotel would fit them in for 19:30 so I do believe they swapped our reservation for this couple which we booked over a month ago. We accidentally walked into the restaurant before being taken to the LIBRARY and found the restaurant had only one couple in it so the reason they kept their guests waiting for so long is beyond me. The sample menu online is 100% different from the options they offer at the restaurant which again was a bit inconvenient. Staff for an establishment such as this were not as attentive as expected, I'm not complaining about pouring your own wine but I have been in less classier restaurants and the service there would put this restaurant to shame. All in all the food was outstanding and the setting was beautiful but for £140.00 for a bottle of wine and two courses for two people I'd definitely recommend somewhere else based on the treatment we received - waiting an hour and a half before food & lack of staff attentiveness I've been to many restaurants in Edinburgh and received great service beautiful restaurants and again great food much cheaper than this examples Amarone, Asti and la petite foulie. Well done to the chefs though I cannot fault them.

We were lucky enough to be staying at the Castle itself, and had a rate that included the 3 course dinner. We had delicious pre dinner canapes in the library where we were given our dinner menus to place our order, before taking our seat in the restaurant. The attention to detail was second to none, and the staff had remembered which of us had ordered what, avoiding the usual 'who ordered the beef?' conversation/interuption.Starter, main and desert were all so moreish, as was my partners as we sampled each others.Good selection of wine, and peaceful atmosphere.Quite expensive if buying the 3 course menu but definately worth it for a special occasion

First ate here a few years ago and it was easily the best meal I'd ever had. I was keen to take my boyfriend for a special treat to look forward to after Christmas. The food was incredible and the price not much more than we would pay for something not quite so special. It's not just about the food, but the beautiful surroundings. The library where you have canapés and your order taken first is a delight too. With regard to the service - completely faultless. Will hopefully be back for another special treat soon.

While staying at Dalhousie Castle, our first dinner was downstairs at the Dungeon Restaurant. What an amazing venue. The ambiance here is stunning. The table settings were beautifully done, and the menu had so many delicious choices. Our wait staff were superb! Every attention to detail was seen to. Our drink glasses were never empty, our meals were served quickly to the table, and we had such friendly staff see to us.What made it very special, was afterwards our head waiter took us on a tour of the hidden staircase up to the next floor! So small and so narrow! We heard stories of the ghost as well.A very special dinner at a very special venue. We felt so very special indeed! Make sure to make your reservation. Our many thanks~

Lovely to return for a meal from several years ago. Thoroughly loved the multi national people staying there who were more than happy to engage with us about their reasons for coming there and experiences. Dinner is quite formal but it is not something I would criticize - everything lovely and such a lovely setting - would not hesitate to book again

In September , booked online, a table for 4 . Was confirmed by email. We made a journey of 35 miles , one way. Had a very cold reception and was told that there is no booking, its wedding on today. confirmation must be a mistake as there web is not working (according to them ). This is a very bad experience we had from a class restaurant. We had to go back without any apologies . Ironically, had a email from them , 2 days later asking if we had a good time there and thanking for visit. !Never again . They had a big party booked there hence they did not care for small family group !

We chose the fine dining "dungeon restaurant" for the second of our two nights at Dalhousie Castle. The ambience is something worth experiencing in itself and it was a little special having our order taken in the library bar before dinner. The food itself was very pleasant with the stand out dish at our table being the venison, it was lovely. It's definitely not cheap but the quality, ambience and attention from the waiter, Pierre, made it worthwhile. The quantity did bother me slightly but hey it's fine dining so hey ho !

Overpriced dining experience on a Saturday night when the staff could obviously not cope. To be honest, it was a bit like Fawlty Towers with the waiter in the restaurant being over attentive. We just wanted to be left alone to eat not having constant stream of 'is everything Ok' etc.

The evening kicked off a little slow with drinks in the library upstairs where you order your meal before then being taken down and seated to dine. The food was of good quality however the cheese platter was disappointing in its quantity and selection. The staff were very professional and made dining in the dungeon a pleasant experience.

Great food and good prices from a local favourite. Never had a bad meal there. No wonder it's so popular. 👍🏻

Location is perfect for the chapel. Room 1, was a newly decorated room, but comfort was absent. The owners went with cheap thin mattresses and pillows, left at 6am after giving up hope of any sleep. The interesting light feature: former corridor emergency light, just raised the discomfort level adding to the lack of sleep as it permanently lit the room in hideous luminous green. This room also boasts: smallest, coldest shower, cracked and chipped floor tiles, matching yellow silicon around the toilet base and corners. After eating in the restuarant, I can recommend sticking to the bar. Steak pie was overcooked, poorly seasoned, lacked texture, colour and flavour, puff pastry top had lost its puff, and was inedible. I did try contacting the owner, twice, but they couldn't be bothered to respond or acknowledge any issue. Be aware reviews are censored through their booking website. In sum: it's a pub, with rooms, no care for customer service, not comfortable and simply not worth the money. Suggest you avoid unless an insomniac.

We booked a table for Sunday lunch but there was no need as this new Marston's pub was very quiet on arrival. We ordered a starter and Roast beef lunch. Food came quickly. Good quantities but wasn't particularly flavoursome. Piped music a little on the loud side for us. Pleasant staff who regularly checked all was well. Good value at under £50 including two coffees and two alcohol free drinks.

Booked not believing the reviews.. disappointed. Not sure if the place is trying to take on a new direction or has been chain bought, but it's certainly not the award winning gastro pub it was a few years ago. On arrival we were taken into an empty dining room and sat bang in the middle on the smallest table available. Within 10 minutes another couple were shown in and sat on the nearest table to us which was a 5 seater, the couple had 2 old dogs with them and whilst I have absolutely no problem with dogs, unfortunately they were a bit stinky and were constantly scratching and shaking their coats, which would probably send less dog friendly folk than us into a unpleasant situation. The menu is vastly reduced and disappointing from previous visits, and portions were not impressive for the price charged. It's like over priced basic pub grub. As it was a birthday meal I opted for cocktails, mojito and daqueri were faultless however a signature espresso martini was disappointing. Overall for 2 starters and mains, 2 lagers and 3 cocktails it was well over £100. Unfortunately we won't be back until the reviews get better. The sun inn...Please go back to what you done best a few years ago. Potential customers.. save your money try the dean tavern up the road.
