There have been many changes since we last visited Whitmuir pre-pandemic. The farm food shop has gone and has been replaced by Junkshop Antiques (which used to operate from smaller premises on the site); The Dancing Light gallery apparently moved online some time ago and the vacant unit they previously occupied was due to be re-launched as a (Christmas) shop when we were there in November 2022. The café looks the same as before (minus the gallery’s paintings) but opened again under new ownership in September 2022 and now trades simply as Whitmuir Cafe. I’m glad to see the log burner remains in place as it is needed to try to keep this cavernous place warm at this time of year. Quercus Garden Plants still operate on the site however when we visited garden plants were not something we were looking to explore. At the time of our lunch visit there was a slow, steady flow of customers but these are large premises to fill so it lacked atmosphere. The menu choice is modest and we ordered up their Toastie of the Day, which was ham and cheese, served with house salad and dressing £6.95). My wife’s request to replace the sourdough bread with brown bread was met. I ordered a Bagel with chicken & lemon mayonnaise, also served with house salad and dressing (£6.25). We both enjoyed our lunch - the chicken was plentiful and tasty with the mayo, the toastie filling good quality and we both rated the house salad and dressing very highly. The only criticism was that the cutlery knives seemed blunt. The coffee we had along with the food was very good - Flat white (£2.95) and Americano (£2.60) - so we ordered another to go along with the home bakes both of which happened to be gluten free. My wife requested the smaller of the large looking slices of Treacle and Lemon tart on display, which turned out to be wise since she was unable to finish it; and I had an Almond slice which I too was unable to finish. Verdict on the cakes was “okay” however we have only rarely found a gluten free cake which we could say we really enjoyed so that is probably just our taste. Overall cost of lunch was just over £29 which we thought was good value. Staff were friendly and efficient. It’s early days for the revised format and not as attractive an overall destination for us however we wish them well. Check opening hours if travelling - seems to be Wednesday to Sunday, 10.00am until 4.00pm at present.

This was an excellent restaurant but now appears to be closed. A listing publication mentioned that there was a new tenant - AtlanticOrganic - but they are not there now [20 July 2021].

Was so looking forward to visiting Whitmuir. The organic garden was closed as was the antique shop. There is a shop attached selling foodstuffs, fruit & veg. There is also an art gallery. The Restaurant is lovely and airy, nice decor. Staff were welcoming. We ordered crab & prawns on organic bread.....it was tasty but........the portion was so small for the price charged......as was the coffee......the cups were too small for a good coffee. We will not be returning.

We stopped here for a break, so glad we did. It had an art gallery, organic food shop which stocked fresh organic fruit and veg along with organic groceries and luxury items for the home. It had a little antique/vintage shop outside which was good. The lunch itself was excellent, the staff were friendly and helpful. I cannot even start to describe the cup cake I had, it was far and away the best I have ever tasted! Heaven.

Location is great, place looks fab, manager/owner is friendly and enthusiastic. Waiting staff a tad glum. Had late breakfast, kedgeree, which was tasty, but portion was way too small for £10. Coffee was ok, decaff wasn't great, but not many places can get decaff right. Overall not bad, but with a bit of effort could be great

We went here for lunch at the weekend and the salads looked so colourful and inviting we each had a selection of them. They were really tasty with lovely contrasts in texture. Then, after a walk up and down the hill, we had raspberry cranachan and orange polenta cake. Or rather, we shared the cranachan, and took the polenta cake home because the portions were so generous. Very friendly service and lovely environment with the gallery, shop, and the plant nursery.

Always enjoyed visiting this wonderful place particularly as the recent changes have raised the standard of the food to a new level. The most recent development is the introduction of a weekend menu presenting original dishes created with imagination and originality introducing a mixture of Mediterranean with a touch of Middle Eastern and a smattering of Spanish cuisine. A must for food lovers!

Our first visit to AtlanticOrganic and a very pleasant experience it was! Lunch comprised starters of a generous bowl of fennel soup with cheese scone and also Spanish bread with tomatoes and olive oil. Kedgeree to follow and also a sublime crab and artichoke tart with a very generous salad providing a taster session from the wide range of salad dishes available. The freshness of the flavours is a treat as regards all dishes. The tart was close to a soufflé topping, light and delicious. For the driver, a non alcoholic fermented tea with ginger - quite different and a real success. Another adventure came in the form of Lebanese coffee - which gains its flavour from cardamom. Attentive and very helpful table service. We found the whole experience highly refreshing and look forward to our next visit. As others have remarked Whitmuir is an excellent destination venue with the restaurant, organic food shop, art gallery, Quercus plant nursery - ideal for those seeking plants that are hardy to the Scottish climate, and Junk Shop Antiques offering an eclectic mix of treasures - you are unlikely to come away empty handed!

Remembering our first lovely visit, we travelled 32 miles to the cafe arriving a little after 3pm on a Thursday afternoon. We were famished by the time we arrived on what was a warm sunny day. Although the cafe was open, we were told by staff that there was no food(!), only a choice of a couple of cakes - as a diabetic I was seeking something nutritious. Apparently the kitchen couldn't even russle up a sandwich or warm a bowl of soup which I found somewhat surprising for a cafe sited on a farm. Staff claimed to be seeking to avoid food waste, although I'd be surprised if there wasn't some food stuff in storage. Kitchen staff hid the kitchen and I felt sorry for the serving staff who had to break the news. In short absolutely lousy customer service and a big disappointment as I was hoping to become a regular at thiscafe. However in light of this experience I too will seek to avoid waste - waste of my time.

We've been to this café a few times before but it was our first visit for a while and we noticed it was again under new management (it has changed a few times over the past number of years). It has a barn like interior so it takes quite a few people to fill it and on the day of our visit it was very quiet. The menu is quirky and features organic products produced locally at Whitmuir Farm and elsewhere. We were advised that the Pulled Pork wasn't available and the chalkboard indicated no pasta either so as we were struggling a bit to see something which appealed to us we both just opted to keep it simple and chose the Caesar Salad. This comes as a starter at £6 or a mains at £10 and we opted for the latter. Whilst we waited we ordered a glass of white wine (which was organic) and around £6.90 a glass so thank goodness it was pleasant and a cola, which too was organic and £2.95 a bottle. My wife likened it to Sodastream cola from her youth. The menu gives a full description of dishes however it appears that this hadn't been passed to the kitchen as our salads arrived with some amendments. Anchovies, which weren't mentioned (albeit these sometimes do feature in this dish) topped the lettuce leaves and had we known my wife would have asked for these to be omitted. There was a sprinkling of hard black crumbs with a seed attached to some - I'm not sure what these were but they were inedible and we thought perhaps they had strayed from a deep fat fryer in error. The chicken was nice enough but didn't appear to have been smoked as described. The "oaty croutons" were rock solid and were impossible to cut with a knife or bite into without the risk of losing a tooth and therefore inedible too. There was no "creamy Caesar dressing" and no "organic Loch Arthur cheese shavings". When the waitress cleared the table and asked for feedback we mentioned the most obvious croutons still on both plates were as hard as a brick and she surmised that they had possibly been "overdone". Less than encouraged with the response we didn't mention the many other aspects of the salad which had puzzled us. We ordered coffees and some desserts. Two Americanos, one black and one with milk on the side arrived as an Americano with a small jug of milk and a Flat White. The desserts again failed to match their description. When the waitress asked who had ordered the "Eton Mess" we were initially puzzled then realised this was the "Rhubarb Meringues". The rhubarb consisted of a few long strands on top of the crushed meringue and clotted cream which needed to be eaten as long strands since there was no way of cutting it with a spoon. Best to do that in the kitchen I think. My "Blueberry Panna Cotta with Violet Macarons" came without any macarons and a single blueberry spliced in two secured with some cream on top of the violet coloured panna cotta. Both desserts were £4.85 each. We ate what had arrived and when we mentioned to the waitress about the absence of the macarons it was apparent that she didn't really know the menu but wasn't aware that "they had ran out in the kitchen" and perhaps she could get them. She mentioned that the manager was in Edinburgh and perhaps that explained some of the issues. When we came to settle our bill a 10% deduction was made for the "confusion with the desserts" and we were only charged £40.63. We can't say we found the meal to have been value for money, with or without the discount and it had been fairly shambolic experience overall. The building also houses an organic food and products shop operated by the farm I believe and an excellent independent gallery (Dancing Light) which presently features quality paintings, sculptures, glassware, jewellery, etc and is worth a browse. The Quercus Garden Plants nursery on site is also worth a wander through, as is the small Junk Shop Antiques. Plenty of parking and sorry to say but perhaps the oaty croutons could fill some of the potholes. Perhaps we caught the cafe on a bad day, I hope.

Recently back to Scotland after living in Belgium and after searching out a local cafe-restaurant south of Edinburgh, this is where I keep coming back to since we found it. I've been to the supper club (bargain for 5 courses at £28pp), coffee with my Mum during the week and some lunches with friends on the weekends. It can be very busy on the weekend, but during the week a quick service with great salad selection and homemade breads cakes and soup as well as a yummy Malay curry and pulled pork. Their organic wine isn't at all expensive. Gorgeous surroundings, lovely young staff and very welcoming owner and manager who explains the whole concept and what Whitmuir is trying to achieve in organic farming. We bought a couple of gifts in the gallery and plant nursery and saw some lovely things in the antiques store too. A great night out and day out to be had! We'll be back for more soon!

Got charged heavily, when I questioned it, sure enough it was wrong amount, then given wrong change, then charged different amount and again wrong change. Sparkling water was charged by bottle I was told when tray came over that there were no bottles but still got charged full amount for equivalent of half the volume. Spoke with (Mr EscobarI assume) and he asked what I thought was fair refund?? Eventually he agreed to full refund. However it was only full refund of the difference I was charged less the water He made excuse that girl on till was only young, that the till wasn't working, that the cakes were different price to that on the till, and that they were busy because of a bus trip. I was served before bus trip arrived! After bus trip left, there were only two customers. Speaks volumes. Used to be heaving!

We arrived in three groups, the restaurant was empty except for a couple at one table - I was in the first group of four and we ordered coffee and cake. The other two groups arriving threw the place into a chaotic muddle. The three staff on duty did not seem able to cope with taking one thing at a time and delivering the first order first. Our table of 4 waited more than 15 minutes before the first two coffees arrived, the milk ordered went somewhere else and we had to wait for the hot milk. Cake was delivered before the coffee. I suspect the barista is inexperienced and badly trained and the coffee machine looks like it has a small capacity. Not sure what the food is like but attention to service detail is required.

We came here for a wander around the fairy walkway. It was well signposted outside and plenty of parking. I advise taking sturdy boots or wellies as it is very muddy in places. Nice pond areas and an easy walk around the fairy walk however it could do with some TLC it's not as good as it used to be...some of ybe8fsiry pieces have broken or fallen apart. We decided to do the hill walk (follow signs on the cow walk) it wasnt too easy to find where to go but we figured it out. We were unsure to walking through the pig woods where the huge pigs had their piglets. You climb the wooden gate and go through their pens with young children and a dog I felt a little uneasy but the pigs seemed friendly enough. It was very very muddy here...up to the top of my welly boots and I nearly lost one in the mud. It was nice seeing the sheep, pigs and cows and a lovely view up the hill. There is a little antique shop here, a shop selling fresh produce and meat etc and a large cafe but we didn't use that on this occasion. A nice place to visit but the outside area needs some TLC to bring it back to life again.

My husband and I took my Mother-in-Law for a lovely afternoon tea at Whitmuir the Organic Place for Mother's Day and it was really lovely. So much so that I felt it worth writing a review. It was a really fantastic experience. We'd heard about the event on the farm's supporters newsletter and thought it would be an ideal place for us to go as we weren't sure where to go on Mother's Day - some places are so overly commercial and we didn't want that at all. Apparently a new chef, Alex, has taken over since the New Year so we were keen to try it out as we'd heard good things about it from friends who've already been. Well I have to say we were really impressed. The food was delicious, the service was fantastic and the overall setting was just lovely. The afternoon tea was made up of about 12 or so different treats: dainty little sandwiches, mini white pudding scotch eggs - which were divine, mackerel rarebits on delicious homemade oat bread (gluten free too), some very tasty crab tartlets and on the sweeter side we had some lovely violet macarons, fruit cake and coffee eclairs. It was all really tasty and we were all well and truly full by the end of it. The service was very good too. I think quite a few of the staff are new and one of them told us she was still getting to grips with the iPad ordering system and that it was a bit complicated but it didn't impact the service we received at all. They were all so friendly anyway and it was such a lovely day we probably wouldn't have minded! It's certainly wonderful to see people making such yummy things and I love that it's all organic. Especially as the prices were very reasonable. We'll definitely be back with or without his Mum!!

My friend and I went to this resturant before attending a preview at the Dancing Light Gallery .There was nothing we liked on the menu so, after having to eventually go get the attention of a waitress, we asked for baked potatoes with cheese, both of which were on the menu but seperately. This seemed to throw the waitress who went to ask someone if this coukd be done. The answer was no, the chef didn't have time to grate cheese!!! What a disgrace. We weren't given an option of another combination containing a baked pitato with cheese, such as including a salad. I was very hungry but walked out in disgust. I've never asked for a simpler menu item and had it turned down for such a pathetic reason. I then tried to find a packet of potato crisps from the organic food shop to eat while we went off to find a better place to eat in the area, which luckily we did, but there was only corn crisps at nearly £3 a packet. There was also no friendly "hello" in the gallery and that was much smaller than it looks on the website and I was completely ignored in the food shop. They are also arguing with my friend who has left similar feedback to mine...very unprofessional. Altogether a very pretentious and over-priced place, with customer service NOT at the top of their list, to which I will not return.

We tend not to consume alcohol on a night out and we were expecting the usual soft drink offerings but no. Alex and Junor had prepared a non alcoholic cocktail which was a fine overture to the feast ahead. And what a feast that was. None of your "the veggie dish is a risotto, like it or lump it". Every course on the menu was stamped with the chef's very creative style and expertise. We are certainly returning to be pampered and treated to more of this in the future. We had a really disappointing lunch today at Whitmuir cafe. The food was dreadful. Our croque jacques and croque monsieur were soggy and lukewarm, topped by COLD bechamel sauce - barely edible. Our coleslaw wasn’t much better and we had to ask for spoons to dish it onto our plates. The carrot cake was far from fresh - not sure how old it was, but it was very dry and not pleasant to eat. Unfortunately we had asked friends to join us so it was an embarrassing experience. When you are with others you are reluctant to make a fuss, but, with hindsight we should have complained and returned all the sub-standard food. We certainly won’t be back and won’t recommend Whitmuir to anyone.

Called in here for a late lunch. Orders taken at the table and I had a burger with salad and I chose not to have the GF bun. The burger was excellent, tender and flavoursome. Coleslaw was made with fresh crispy veg and the salad leaves were home grown. The chips were fresh made from proper potatoes and we asked to take them home because they were delicious. Tea and coffee and accompanied by a pear and almond cake (GF) and a GF brownie. Both excellent, moist and not too sweet. Excellent friendly service too. Nothing was too much trouble. Even the tea had more flavour than most places. Thank you.

The farm shop had a fantastic range of organic produce at prices which are competitive with non organic foods. The restaurant serves fresh food which was reasonably priced and was very tasty. I'd definitely go back.

We visited again today not having been here for a few years and it felt different, and not in a good way and the Whitmuir Kitchen is not anything like as good as it used to be. Gone are the variety of specials and the fantastic puddings and my wife's Croque Jacques when it arrived was assembled rather than cooked - so a soggy vegetable sandwich with cold cheese in the middle. She returned it and the replacement was better - but hard to imagine how any chef could have let the first attempt leave the kitchen.

I can't believe anyone could find fault with this place. The Fairy Walk is so much fun for kids. My son loved exploring the woods and playing in the wigwam. The food in the cafe is beautiful and the staff all very helpful and polite. We'll definitely return.

I ate here a few days ago. The menu is simple and focusses on doing a few things well (much better in my opinion than doing lots of things badly!). They also introduce a new menu every couple of months, depending on what is in season, which is an approach I like. They also cater well for meat eaters, vegetarians, vegans, coeliacs etc. I've had a burger and the soup here lately, and coffee and cakes fairly often, and it's all been good. Much improved since my last review a couple of years ago, and back to having the good atmosphere and good waiting staff of a while ago. Well done Whitmuir!

I had a lovely peaceful stop for coffee & cake. The young waiters were pleasant & efficient. I bought some home grown tomatoes & broccoli which were delicious. In fact the best I have ever tasted. The tomatoes didn't make it home as my husband & I ate them on the way. The butcher meat is worth trying if you haven't already. We had their popes eye steak for dinner last night & I have some lamb for Sunday dinner. Very high quality meat.

I’ve been here a few times and to be honest instead of improving the opposite is true. The staff in the restaurant can be dismissive and disinterested - I ordered a simple scone today after I had been served coffee but there appeared to be more important things for the member of staff to do ie writing up the blackboard! I got my scone but only when it suited her to serve me. The scone in question was dry and crumbled so much I had to scoop it up in a spoon!! It’s not difficult to make a good scone. My friend asked for sausage in a roll - she left most of it as the roll tasted stale. This restaurant is expensive so this is very disappointing. Our two young grandsons wanted a simple biscuit - this wasnt possible so I had to buy some in the shop. Gluten free and tasteless am afraid.

I came to whitmuir with my friend a few weeks ago and despite issues in the kitchen (a few other tables complained about food while we were there) we had a lovely lunch. Upon being told that the hot vegan option was unavailable we were disappointed and preparing to leave. However our waitress, who was vegan herself, suggested she ask the kitchen if they could make us a special meal and we enjoyed what was concocted very much! I hope to come back to whitmuir when things are running more smoothly and have the curry that was unavailable! Staff were lovely and we sat outside in the sun.

Had visited the café before but this time our meal was very disappointing. Breaded Haddock and chips took a long time to arrive and when it did the fish was not only cold, but not properly cooked. We sent it back and they re-heated it, but we got no reduction in our bill or offer of a free coffee or anything to make up for it. I wouldn't eat there again. On the plus side the gallery and food shop are pleasant to look round.

Whitmuir was recommended by a friend after we attempted to eat at the Leadburn Inn. I'm so glad we chose Whitmuir instead as this spacious bright cafe was very welcoming and pleasent. Before entering you are greeted by an array of fresh organic produce for sale. A previous disabled reviewer on here said that access was poor, however I completely disagree. Entering the building from the car park was a doddle even with snow! The surrounding areas were farming grassland, so not everywhere is perfectly designed to fit all needs. But you wouldn't expect anywhere outside of a city to be disable friendly, so I would not pay attention to that one reviewer's self-centered rant about getting scratched in the face by a bush.

Popped in here for a bite to eat and then went on a walk afterwards. Recent previous reviews of the food being mediocre and prices high put me off somewhat but I think these were harsh and taking these reviews into account I found that it was actually ok in terms of quality and price. We had soup and a coffee and the kids had a sandwich. There was a kids play corner with toy box was great to keep them amused. There were lots of young staff but they were so nice and chatty and did not come across surly or just there for the money. My husband even remarked on how nice and friendly all the staff were. I had a look around the gallery which was nice, items were fairly pricey but high quality. After lunch we went for a walk. There are several different walks on offer and each one is well sign-posted and broken down to advise how long it takes. We took advice from the staff, as we had a baby and 2 little ones we didn't want too long a walk. I think it may have been the duck walk we did? There were fairy doors and even a huge tepee, the kids loved it! We even had one of the sheepdogs join us and follow us round for a while which the kids loved. We will be back and in the Spring/summertime to do so much more!

Cafe nearly empty, so couldn't understand why no-one acknowledged my existence for 15 minutes! Order taken, and requests ignored. If this was just a one off you'd be inclined to let things go, but it wasn't. Ended up leaving. Absolutely loved this place...not anymore. Won't put myself through it again - I kept hoping things would improve. Seemed that folk on the table next to me had similar issues with their order! Stressful visit. I know the coffee is fantastic here (and I'm sure is the best in the Borders!) but I usually don't get the opportunity to stop for lunch. Today was the exception and I was very impressed with the quality of the food....everything freshly prepared, good-sized portions and utterly delicious. I had the lentil & cashew loaf w/tomato chutney which came with winter slaw and a salad or side of your choice. I went for the roasted cauliflower, hazelnut & pomegranate salad. And for dessert, a sublime piece of chocolate fudge cake (gf). To top it all off, the service was great, with the friendliest of staff :)

I've passed this place many times wishing I had time to go in for a meal. When I finally did it was a bit of a disaster. The service was pleasant and very apologetic but there were clearly big issues in the kitchen. Two simple meals mainly comprising of pre-made salads finally arrived after nearly an hour. It really wasn't worth the wait. The salmon tartlet had a raw and very soggy bottom and the felafels were equally soggy. A member of staff (from the meat dept?) spent a lot of time slouched over the restaurant counter playing with her mobile phone. The male toilets were messy with used hand towels all over the floor. Take care on the shop floor, there are areas of subsidence unmarked by any warning tape. The place really needs some strong management and a bit more care and attention. I'll keep driving past next time.

I have been a supporter of Whitmuir Farm since way before the arrangement they have there now with the big farm shop and cafe. When the cafe first opened, run by the farm itself the food was fresh, interesting and I liked the fact there was the strong link with the farm. Sometimes the service was a bit slow but I went there because I liked what they were trying to do there and it wasn't the place I went if I wanted a quick pit-stop.Since Edinburgh Larder took over it has really gone downhill. The menu on the face of it looks nice, but the food is nowhere near up to the standard of the places they run in the city and I don't know why.I keep going back periodically to see whether things have improved but last week I was disappointed with the breakfast roll I had which was one (albeit fairly long) sausage, cut in half, and it was only just cooked, but very pale. My chef husband assured me it was just about hot enough to be OK so I didn't send it back.It is such a shame as they are not making the best of the amazing produce that Whitmuir is renowned for and they are really letting them down.Edinburgh Larder in town is always excellent and if they could recreate what they have there at Whitmuir, it would absolutely be a place worth visiting.I'm keeping my fingers crossed for an improvement very soon :-)

Unlike my partner I don't normally go all in for the Eco/Organic food often finding it so overpriced. Was pleasantly surprised here to find a mouthwatering menu with very reasonable prices. The brisket of beef itself was beautifully cooked although lacking in seasoning, the quality of the accompanying vegetables made up for this somewhat. Overall highly recommended, nice informal atmosphere.

This beautiful farm has it all,a beautiful setting a great family friendly restaurant,a well stocked farm shop and a nursery selling plants suited to Scottish conditions. My grandson loved this place, we went on the fairy walk around the farm, starting with a bell to ring to waken the fairies. The little fairy doors in the trees, bridges and fairy King throne were magical. He stroked a chicken and saw pigs and sheep. The adults enjoyed a tasty lunch while the children played with toys, books and sit on toys in the garden. This place is rustic in a very pretty and natural way. Highly recommended

I volunteer here once a week but also go to the Wednesday community lunch where a set 3 course meal is served at 12.30. Open to all, you pay by donation but there is no obligation. Lentil soup with sourdough bread, vegetarian lasagne with garlic toast , coffee and chocolate hazelnut cake was yesterday's delicious meal. There's a friendly atmosphere and willing service. The Storehouse also supports several young vulnerable adults who help to serve and to clear tables - always with a smile. I feel really lucky and proud to have the Storehouse in my town. I hesitated to write this review because I volunteer in the shop but I am also a café customer.

Inexplicably just stopped being a restaurant. Can't find anything about it online. Open but for what purpose I don't know. Now the guests at the associated premier inn next door have nowhere to eat. We were regulars and it was great to have somewhere affordable and reliable to get a meal. We are owed an explanation.
