The best restaurants serving British food in England

After reading great reviews we came here for a birthday meal. Firstly we were unfortunately sat next to the door leading to the toilets, which smelt like constant piss wafting past. Oh the food 😢 I had Sunday roast no option of chicken, just beef or pork. I settled with the beef, I wish I hadn't, it was so tough and full of gristle I couldn't eat it. The potatoes tasted like cheap frozen ones that were hot but really hard in the middle, my mum's potato was so big it was raw in the middle, not sure what happened to the Yorkshire puddings it was chewy and it had such a strange taste to it that I couldn't eat it. £18 per meal and I only ate the vegetables. Extremely disappointed and definitely won't be coming again. Oh and you might want to look at the coke dispenser as everyone's were completely flat. On a better note the apple crumble was lovely I just wish the rest was. We did think it was strange though how no one asked us how the meal was, maybe they already knew?

SO IMPRESSED. All of the staff were absolutely delightful and couldn’t do enough for you, with the warmest smiles to go with it. The atmosphere was just what you would hope for a destination country pub, and the classy but quirky decor to go with. Great range of drinks with knowledge about the local options too, and speciality cocktails! To top it off, the food matched this incredibly high standard. Huge well done to Lesley and the team. You’re running a damn good thing here.

Per sentirci un po' inglesi e un po' meno turisti, abbiamo pranzato in questo tipico ristorante di Fish&Chips prima di andare a vedere la partita di calcio del Fulham nella curva dei cottagers! che dire...cibo e accoglienza davvero ottimi, atmosfera da locals! Non dimenticatevi di suonare la campana prima di uscire se avete apprezzato il pranzo.

Went with friends few weeks ago had delicious fish chips so decided to go for steak ale pie. So disappointed tasteless gravy watery and although loads meat no taste to it. It would of been easier to eat with puff pastry top, it had, hard short crust top . Peas had a burnt taste to them so very disappointed. .

A group of us called in for food recently. On confirmation food was being served we asked the barmaid for a table but were told sit anywhere it’s a pub. We all ordered meals and drinks to the value of around £150 which were of decent quality. What wasn’t so good was a woman in a chefs outfit kept coming and looking at us while we were eating which was odd. The woman then came over while some of us were still eating and drinking basically telling us to either move or drink/eat up and leave as they had a large group who wanted to sit where we were. Just seemed to me if you’re a local then you’re ok but if you aren’t they’ll take your money and then treat you like crap. Very poor customer service, our money should be as good as anyone else’s. The place is a pub not a restaurant so why does it matter where you sit….it clearly wasn’t an issue when we asked the barmaid prior to parting with our money. This soured what was actually a decent meal

We are regular visitors at The Royal Oak. We went for a meal last night and the food was fantastic as always. Imaginative meals, not just the usual standard pub food. Generous food portions - I was stuffed after one course. Great kids meal options - freshly made not just out of a freezer! Lovely relaxed and cosy atmosphere. Friendly, helpful and attentive staff. 10/10 all round! The poor reviews baffle me? Give it a try!

We are regulars here. You can’t get a better breakfast or brunch for miles. There’s always a queue - be prepared to wait, but it’s definitely worth it!

This is the PERFECT pub for Sunday lunch. It is simply amazing. My nephew rated his cheeseburger “10 out of 10 - and more!”. Thank you.

Breakfasts are fantastic. Hash browns are amazing. Lovely food all round. Great friendly staff. Cheese soufflé is also highly recommended.

i booked a table for 7:30pm to celebrate my 5th year anniversary with my partner all for them to call up as we're getting ready to say we either come earlier or we cancel as they want to close the restaurant early due to it being "dead". obviously we couldn't make it any earlier and it's absolutely pathetic and bad customer service they gave us no choice in the matter. it's not my issue the restaurant wasn't as busy as they would like, so my plans and celebration had to be affected and was too late to try anywhere else as the town is a good 20 minute drive and places stop serving at 8pm anyways.

We had a fantastic meal with lovely freshly cooked food. The Panfried Lambs Rump was absolutely delicious. The Fish and Chips amazing The sticky toffee pudding is not to be missed We will be back!!

Sunday roast extremely tasty but disappointed with portion sizes and the high cost of any extras. The Food also needs to be served hotter as it was only tepid and the Yorkshire’s were cold. The manager saved the day by bringing some hot gravy with fresh Yorkshire puddings. The service was generally slow - having to wait 10 minutes plus for the drinks to be delivered and having to ask to order the food - after waiting over 15 minutes with menu. No salt and pepper on table and cranberry sauce not delivered until meal virtually fully eaten. Staff very friendly and possibly short staffed during our visit? We paid £140 for 4 adults and 2 young children for 4 roast dinners, 2 children’s dinners, 2 children’s ice creams and drinks. Happy with cost if portion sizes were increased as I left still Hungary! I would try again if not for the small portions.

Great little pub. Great atmosphere everyone is very friendly and had a fire on the go to keep us warm and toasty Everyone in our party enjoyed their food. We had a prawn sandwich, fish and chips and lasagne. The bill including 3 bottles of wine, and some puddings came to £140. Very reasonable.

Our son and daughter in law kindly bought us an afternoon tea voucher for the Oken. Having experienced similar afternoon tea occasions we did not have high expectations. We were blown away by the quality of the food; fresh, tasty and well presented. Not only was the food delicious the service was great and added to the afternoon tea experience. We were so delighted we immediately booked another afternoon tea for our anniversary in April. Highly recommend a visit.
