My partner and I visited Tirfounder Fields in Aberdare (Brewers Fayre) and were left thoroughly disappointed by both the service and the quality of the food. On arrival, everything seemed fairly normal, and we placed our order—two meals (one being a katsu curry), a coke each, and sides of garlic bread and chips—coming to a total of £43, which already felt steep for what we were getting. I noted a mushroom allergy on my own meal, and after paying, a waiter approached me to say I couldn’t have the chips or onion rings with my grill because mushrooms are fried in the same oil. I explained that my allergy isn’t severe and that cross-contamination doesn’t cause a reaction for me—only eating mushrooms does—so I was happy to accept the risk. The waiter checked with the kitchen, who refused to serve them regardless. I understood they were being cautious, but when I asked for an alternative, I was only offered plain white rice or a salad—neither of which felt like a fair or suitable replacement for fries and onion rings. I asked if I could swap for garlic bread instead (a very small portion), but was refused again. This felt unreasonable, especially as I’d already paid and wasn’t given the chance to change my main meal to something that would go better with the alternatives—like one of their curries that actually comes with rice. Trying to stay positive, I went ahead with the mixed grill and rice—even though the combination was clearly not going to work. But things got worse when the meals arrived. My partner’s side of fries was placed on top of my plate in a separate dish—completely undermining the strict stance they took on cross-contamination. It was contradictory and frustrating. At that point, I didn’t argue with the waiter again, as he hadn’t been particularly helpful or knowledgeable, and it felt pointless. As for the food itself—it didn’t redeem the experience. The rice was bland and unappetising. The steak was meant to be medium rare but came out closer to well done. The chicken was dry and hard to finish, and the gammon portion was tiny. The sausages were okay at best. The garlic bread was average and very small—just three tiny slices between us. The fries, ironically the only half-decent thing, came in a small portion and I couldn’t even eat them. To make matters worse, my partner’s katsu curry also came in a small portion—not great value at all considering the total bill was £43. No one came to check on our table after serving, so I didn’t get the chance to flag the issue with the fries or ask for something else without leaving my food to go to the bar. Overall, it was a poor experience from start to finish. The approach to allergens was inconsistent, the food was below average, the portions were small, and the prices didn’t match the quality. I won’t be returning.

We had a fantastic experience at the Three Blackbirds — from the moment we walked in, the service was warm and attentive. The atmosphere is charming and welcoming, and the staff made us feel right at home. The food was absolutely delicious — hearty, well-prepared, and full of flavor. You can tell a lot of care goes into both the cooking and the customer experience. Highly recommended for anyone looking for a great meal in a relaxed pub setting. We’ll definitely be back!

We arrived at 6.00pm for a Sunday roast and the restaurant was very quiet so we decided to sit in the bar. It took a while to get someone to take the order and we informed the server that my wife was gluten free and that was not a problem. The roast dinner arrived and we looked at the roast potatoes which were well over cooked and tasted like they had been in the oven or under a hot lamp for far to long, the Yorkshire pudding was also dry and crusty. The dinner at best was Luke warm and my wife sent hers back to be heated up in a microwave. For the price of £17.95 it should of all been fresh and hot. We had been traveling most of the day so we were hungry and ate most of the dinner but we were very disappointed. The bar prices were also high £5.80 for a pint of cider. We have eaten here in the past and always found the food very good but will not be visiting again.

Awful, Awful, avoid at all cost, went in and nobody was in there, that should have set alarm bells ringing, but we were hungry, so decided to stay, I asked if they had red wine, the lady behind the bar said I’ll check as we were waiting a delivery, she came back with a bottle which I recognised from Aldi, Grapevine Merlot, £4.19 at Aldi, they charged £18, they removed the label at the back of the bottle. I ordered a 12oz Gammon steak, with chips and peas, tbh, the gammon was that thin it would have blown off my plate if sat outside, think that was from Aldi too. Lesson learned !!!

Went with a small group for the Sunday lunch buffet. Good variety, average quality and taste, below standard service. Plus points: vast selection and salad options were particularly good. Good drinks options especially non-alcoholic alternatives for those of us driving. Nice general atmosphere and the buffet is well spaced so didn’t feel too crowded etc. The main waiter that served us had an unfriendly and unwelcoming attitude and had quite a peculiar obsession with the drinks menu. 3 of us asked him to leave the drinks menu at the table while one of our party was looking through it and apparently it couldn’t be left with her in case we got gravy on it - quite odd considering we were a table of adults and had only just sat down so there wasn’t gravy around anyway! There were some other bizzare things but the general attitude was not pleasant or helpful. Perhaps he was tired after a long shift and we caught him on a bad day as I’ve seen other reviews on here that are complimentary of the same person. The lady that checked us in and sat us down was friendly, polite and helpful though. The other waiters collecting plates did so efficiently. Food was average, standard buffet quality. Nearly all the glasses we were served drinks in were dirty. Overall we had expected more considering the venue so felt quite underwhelmed and wouldn’t likely return for the Sunday lunch buffet.

We went to the crows nest on Saturday 19th April 2025 For my sister 70th birthday with family and friends, the meals we ordered was very well presented, the drinks was lovely to, we even had desserts cause the food was so nice, they had a band in the night so we all decided today stay, we had a fantastic time ,if anyone is looking to take family and friends outside for food I would definitely recommend the crows nest Cwmbran Llanyravon. called Emily if that is her name, she is always at the bar she has dark hair in a ponytail, when I go to the crows nest this girl is normally the one who always serve me, and I have to say, she is a credit to your staff she is really helpful always, but I have to say all your staff are really lovely they always go out of there way to make you feel welcome, that is why I love coming to the crows nest with family and friends cause it's such a fantastic atmosphere every time we have gone there, I would like to say thank you so much for having us, thankyou for making my family feel welcome, we will definitely be back, your staff deserve recognition and the Manager is really lovely as well thankyou so much everyone for your kind hospitality.

As I walked into The Rafters, the atmosphere was filled with wonderful flavours eminating from the food being served. The restaurant was very spacious giving the feeling of calmness. The staff were very helpful and had an eye for detail. The food was well presented and served in a timely manner. Only one small detail regarding my dish was that I ordered medium rare lamb but got more rare than medium finish. Not a major issue though as the flavours exploded with every bit. Definitely worth a revisit. Higher priced but worth every £.

We always went for breakfast to the black boy but food was cold. So we left it for a few months gave it another try it was good untill today. Ordered breakfast seem to take a while and it wasn't busy. When it came it was cold on a cold plate, told the lad serving. He replied " that's strange I watched them cook it and brought it straight out". He had been behind the bar all the time so could not have watched them. He took it back and brought fresh it was hot but still on a cold plate. They could learn a lot from the guys in Shrewsbury.

This is our second experience of Sunday lunch at the Ship Inn. On both occasions we have had beautiful dinners. The meat is so tasty and there is plenty of vegetables. It’s great value and I’m difficult to please when it comes to Sunday dinners. The Ship is a must if you’re in the area.

Hadn’t bothered to read reviews but cafe was busy when we arrived on our long walk from Chepstow. Needed to refuel so stopped here. We had lovely sandwiches, clearly freshly made on warm baguette. The staff that served were all very nice. Food arrived fairly promptly. Wouldn’t hesitate to go back. There were dogs wandering but we like dogs so no problem, all were well behaved. Possibly a little pricey but I don’t mind if everything else is good…and it was.
