Another great meal. Always enjoy a visit for food at this location. Friendly staff and pooches. As a dog lover, I have no problem with the dogs wandering around.

Will never change my opinion of Abbey Mill. Ignore negative reviews, this place is outstanding. Attended again for another afternoon tea (3 years later) and it my opinion is the same. Amazing service, staff were friendly and very accommodating! Massive portions too!

We popped in for lunch on a Saturday First impressions were the place didn’t feel very clean coupled with a dog walking up to tables on the scrounge. Table next to us asked us rudely if the dog was ours, as he clearly didn’t like dogs in the eating area, which is quite right Ordered a coupe of baguettes and the soup. Soup was tepid so had to go back. The baguettes were cheap and doughy. The bacon filling was fatty and undercooked and the chicken resembled left overs from a Sunday dinner. And then to top it all off nearly £40! If you’re going to charge top dollar at least use decent ingredients, don’t mind paying for good food. Tourist trap essentially.

I appreciate hospitality has suffered and we always try to support local businesses and have used the woodsaw and wheel on many occasions. Yesterday my Mum and me stopped for lunch two Jacket Potatoes and two coffees over £30 We were advised due to staff shortages there would be a delay which we said yes thats fine better quality than rushed how wrong we were the coffees were Luke warm and although the potatos looked great when they arrived they were cold when you got to the middle. My Mum advised one of the waitresses just to make them aware and instead of apologising or getting a Manager all she did was pull a face at my Mum and walk off. This ruined our lovely but wet day at Tintern. I hope the Management read this and train their staff on how to deal with complaints better.

The whole place looks untidy and unkept from the outside. Needs a bit of TLC. Food was nice but pricey. If you’re sat outside, the ordering system is bizarre. Various signs pointing you to stand next to another sign just outside the main door, then wait to be called inside by a member of staff who will then take your order. I asked for tap water and was pointed to two jugs of water that were on a bench outside, open to the elements. When I first saw them, I thought they were there for dogs! The plastic cups next to the jugs had seen better days - yellow and manky. There were bits floating in the water so just left the cup I poured on the side. Strange concept when staff could just get fresh water from the tap for you.

I have been here before and recommended it to a friend I was travelling with . I ordered a slice of apple strudel which wasn’t a large piece and two teas. I was charged almost £12 which I thought was on the expensive side . Next time I’ll be trying out one of the other cafes in the area instead.

The craft shops are OK and there was some lovely stuff in the art shop. But the cafe was poor. Comparatively expensive against neighbouring cafes, and the coffee was really nasty. Ice cream stand was the same and I wouldn't recommend the ice cream. Staff were quite rude.

We’ve been to the restaurant regularly since we discovered it over two years ago and have always thoroughly enjoyed the lovely service, always with a lovely welcome to both us and our dog Peanut- they even remembered his name! The food is brilliant in both choice quantity and quality, and at such fair prices. The atmosphere is always so relaxed and friendly, and we always look forward to going back. We’ll be there again next week and it will be one of the highlights of our holiday . Thank you to all the staff - we really appreciate both what you do and how you do it!

Interestingly, after reading about the rude staff, we experienced this today, not all the staff, but 2 individuals. Food not good, our friend left his meat, asked by the waitress ‘why’, he answered honestly ‘tough’ she grabbed his plate and aggressively remarked, ‘no one else has complained’. The rest of the meal wasn’t that clever either, very undercooked cold vegetables, watery gravy, minuscule mince pie with a thin, and I mean thin, layer of a brown coloured substance, didn’t taste of anything. Word must have got around, because another waitress clearing our table looked extremely miserable, and didn’t wish to communicate with us at all, never again, paying very good money for unpalatable food and bad vibes. They won’t last long carrying on like that.

This review relates to a staff member’s unwelcoming and arrogant persona when attending the site on Saturday 20 th October. My family has attended this lovely site for more than 20 years, during all four seasons. We often walk the Tiddenham Tunnel from the Tiddenham side and always pop into Tintern. It has some wonderful memories and we have always been impressed with the cleanliness and warmth of the staff. Now I know Halloween is not far off and maybe the misty morning added to the autumnal , spooky ambience but I was not expecting a visit by a welcoming member of the 31st October set. We had entered the car park 15 minutes early having passed a lovely lady who had unlocked it. She approached us and said it didn’t opened until 10.30am. I said is it ok for us to wait and she said it was fine. My 78 year old mother in law was happy to wait to use the toilet and then have a coffee and a bite to eat. Oh no that was not happening. Over came Mrs “ you can’t park here, I am in charge and that’s my power role here, unwelcoming person of the year award, I’m locking the gate and you must leave now and you can’t sit quietly until it opens” Of the North. I didn’t react but inside I thought well how wonderful I thought this lady was. I had no doubt that any production of the show “ Wicked” would welcome her in any audition. I decided to remain silent and simply drove away and will probably never return. It’s not difficult to assess the situation and understanding for goodness sake. There was no one else around and wasn’t as if there was a queue blocking the road! It’s a shame human behaviour sometimes lets itself down when really a little kindness and obvious obviousness would result in a different reaction. For example. Good morning.Yes you can park here that’s no problem. We are not open for another 15 minutes but we’re just going to put the kettle on. Won’t be long. I would have replied something like. Thank you very much that’s very kind of you. That sentiment would then get passed on in conversations between friends. It’s a wonderful and free type of advertising in a way.Unfortunately I can’t write in this forum how I actually felt having decided to drive some distance to enjoy the area with my wife and mother in law. Customer service at its best one might say. Great Britain! We travelled to a nearby garden centre and had a lovely welcome. Oh what a difference. There was plenty of Halloween paraphernalia there too, but somehow it was missing the wickedness.

A pleasant place to stop if you like tourist shopping and chance to relax and enjoy the view of the river. There was a place for refreshments but didn’t go near so no idea of cost or facilities. A huge range of products and lots of hand made items for all. The parking is very limited and was lucky enough to find a space. It was free but a sign clearly stated for use with the shops. This is because there is a bridge spanning the river Wye which can take you on a scenic walk following the railway track and walk the tunnel. A pretty view on the sprung moving bridge with the abbey in the background.

Had the full afternoon high tea at Abbey Mill cafe in Tintern. Excellent value and quality for £17.50 per person...... So much food we had to take away quite a lot in doggy boxes which were provided to us. We had savouries ... Sandwiches, wraps, scotch egg, sausage rolls and cheese flan, followed by large scones, clotted cream and jam and finished up with cakes..... Jam sponge cake, welsh cakes, macaroons and other cakes. We were sitting in the 'conservatory overlooking to garden area and pond and it was very pleasant

After having some lunch outside and deciding to pause before having cakes and more tea we decided to have a break. We saw other people wishing to have their seat outside to eat and moved away to make way for them and the busy staff. I have a poorly ankle and was finding standing difficult, and as my companion wished to explore the crafts businesses, on spotting a pile of unused plastic chairs outside in a corner I moved two a few yards for our temporary use by the river view. On returning inside to look at the cakes before ordering I was approached by a women who said "If you have finished with my chairs I would like you to put them back". I informed her that I had already done that, and as I dislike rudeness I thought it best to leave and continue our repast elsewhere. The Railway cafe a little further on proved to be perfect.

The salad trimmings with meals are wonderful. We come here quite often for lunch. It gets busy in the summer as you would expect. It’s best to find a table if outside then go up and order your food. Unfortunately doing this isn’t very disabled friendly as there are steps, and it looks like you are queue jumping if you use the ramp on the right and travel the full length of the inside seating to the counter. Yes people do leave bags in the way! Table service outside would be better for disabled people or improved access. You have the same issue to use the toilets inside. They are located down a corridor to the left of the counter once you have gone up the steps, or straight on if you have come up the ramp. These are the only toilets on site and for customers only. The food however is very good and The Spirit of the Green Man Studio makes it a great place to stop for lunch.

A tourist attraction within Tintern consisting of various old buildings including an old mill with mill wheel although this didn't start, at the times it should have done, when we were there. Shops sell items made by local crafters and some 'bought in' items. A nice range of goods at varying price points. Outdoor seating near the mill had unwelcoming signs saying only for those buying ice-cream from the ice-cream hut. Other people including cafe users had to sit elsewhere. Sat at tables outside the cafe for drinks and snacks. Had to go into the cafe (up steps) to order but then food brought to table. As two people with mobility disabilities this wasn't the easiest to do so outdoor / level access service would have been better. Toilets were also inside and up steps although we were directed to a sloped exit but this wasn't obvious from the outside. Scones (2), jam and cream were lovely but more expensive than similar we had elsewhere

To be honest we really didn’t want much after a filling breakfast. So, we decided an a small snack lunch, and ordered a single set-plate of two Welshcakes (with jam), a piece of Barra Brith with a pot of tea for one. We also ordered a Capuchino coffee. We had one of the Welshcakes each, and cut the Bara Brith in two, to share. Both were very good, the tea was good, but the coffee had a washed out taste and was very poor. It felt like and looked like a tourist trap, and the demeaner of the waitress was sullen and unwelcoming, despite it being a pleasant place to sit.

I get that we were just out of lockdown the week we went back to this restaurant, but the attitude of the older waitress was a bit off putting , it was sunny when we arrived sat at an outside table , but suddenly it started raining heavy so we got up and walked towards the half empty restaurant , we were told we should have stayed seated ,,, in the rain ,,yea right , so was reluctantly shown a table inside , where once seated I saw her talking to another waitress and looking in our direction with a not so nice face on her. The food came eventually 2 Baguettes with pulled pork and 1 with slow roasted beef ,,, which tasted of nothing and texture was like stuff from a Tin , desert wasn't much better powdered custard the type you whisk with water over a awful soggy apple pie. £44 for lunch for 3 of us ... Such a pity as staff were so nice last time we went as was the food.

Just as well, as we won't be going there again. When I asked in the on site tourist information office/ gift shop if the abbey was currently open to the public because of covid, I was given the reply 'Dunno, yes, probably I should think so, maybe.' I love this place - very covid aware, wonderful greeting (I can't say smiles as we are all behind masks!) great menu and our favoutie Dragon Pie. Service was at a fair pace considering all the outdoor tables were occupied and we didn't have long to wait for our meal either, but we were quite happy soaking up the atmosphere. We love the spiciness of the pie, the colourful salad and good sized jacket potato. The restaurant is set amongst an interesting environment, quirky little shops and ,of course, the beautiful Wye Valley. Definitely a feel good factor after such a tough winter with lock down etc. The rolls, soup, salads, teas and cakes all looked good on the tables surrounding us. I didn't see an unappetising plate and the staff check you are happy with your meal. Many thanks.

My wife and I visited Tintern this afternoon and really enjoyed our stay. Feeling hungry we visited the Abbey Mill restaurant. Obviously Covid restrictions are in place so we had to place an order and had to wait until our number was called. My granddaughter was tired so sat down at one of the tables not noticing the cross on the bench. She was told by a rather grumpy lady that she could not sit here, so came to stand by us in the queue. Our food and drinks were served and we started to eat them standing up. The baguettes were tasty, but the coffee was dreadful. Just then the same abrupt lady came out of a side door and told us we couldn't eat our food there we had to clear the premises "you're not in England now" she said. My wife said we know we are Welsh "You should know then" she said abruptly. I asked where we were supposed to eat our meal and was told in an unhelpful tone "you have to go to a public park, these are private premises". She then turned to the other customers in the queue and said "Did you all get that". Now I don't mind being wrong or even being told if I'm wrong. But there is a correct way to do it and that is not in a rude and unhelpful way. This lady has successfully put myself and my wife off from ever visiting these premises again, and if that is her way of conducting customer interaction can I suggest she finds a different job, like a convent for instance!!!

Had to look for the sanitizer after using the only pen available to write my track and trace details, people not using the one way system and people pushing past the queue for the toilet. The dark haired waitress was quite offish when she brought our coffee over and said that she had called our number four times. I replied that the lady that took my order wrote down exactly where we were sitting and the reply was a short “well we are very busy” I had also finished my coffee before the cake arrived. We had looked at other places to eat beforehand but they were both fully booked , so the Abbey Mill was certainly not second best ...

Our usual options in Tintern were closed so we dropped in to Abbey Mill for a quick lunch. The restaurant was empty and we were told to grab a seat anywhere so we chose a table by the window. A voice came from behind us barking that the window tables were all reserved - "I've got some parties of four that have booked". During our time here, no pre-booked parties of four appeared, and any couples who dared to try to sit at a window table were told "I've got a party of eight/four booked" . I understand the need to maximize profit, but telling fibs to customers is annoying. I'd have had more respect if the head waitress had simply said " we prefer to keep these tables for bigger groups" rather than lying. Anyway, back to our visit. Chastened by the head waitress, we squished ourselves onto a tiny table, and looked at the menu. I should have heeded my instinct that this was an overpriced tourist trap and left. Baguettes are £7.99, served with crisps and homemade coleslaw. What arrives is a cheap "part-bake" type baguette, with scant filling and a lot of lettuce for bulk. The coleslaw is mostly the core of the cabbage mixed with nasty mayonnaise. The crisps were nice. The overwhelming feeling is that customers are nothing but a capitive audience who exist to be ripped off. I hate to leave a negative review (and rarely do) but visitors to this lovely part of the world deserve to be treated better than this.

It was most satisfying after walking for 3 hours around Tintern. The Mill itself have a 10 minute showdown we could watch form where we were sitting. I would recommend this place for a cafe type of lunch - don't expect too much but it was certainly service with a smile. ;)

Meat pie was good (huge portions) but I wish the flavor had come through a bit more. My favorite part was, oddly, the salad which had some sort of delicious dressing and lots of interesting toppings.

This is a tourist trap. Our bill added up to 13 pounds and they charged us 17 with no explanation. We had to walk to a different building, litrlerally, to pay with a credit card. When we challenged the bill, the clerk just shrugged and said we’d have to take it up with the restaurant in the other building. All the shops are touristy—not authentic Welsh and way over-priced.

We ducked into this café for a lunch on a rainy afternoon after hiking to the Devil’s Pulpit. It was cozy and warm. I had the poached salmon served with delicious small potatoes and a sauce as well as a country salad (rocket, beans, cucumber, lettuce, and beets). All delicious. My friend had the three Welsh sausages (not very spicy) served with gravy and mashed potatoes which looked and was reported as being very good. We finished our meals with coffee and homemade muffins – also excellent.

Stopped here for a £7.30 for a cup of coffee and slice of chocolate cake whilst out cycling. Only came here because the excellent Filling station café was unexpectedly closed. Big mistake! The coffee came out of a machine, was tasteless and not very hot. The chocolate cake was average but had been warmed up (without request), which wasn't good on a hot day. It isn't difficult to produce a decent cup of coffee, but this place doesn't have a clue. My brother's cappuccino was essentially just warm milk. Never again!

Don’t enjoy leaving poor reviews but did feel that the food was more school dinner than tasty snack. I had a bacon and black pudding baguette but I think it had all been microwaved, the couple opposite had a roast. The roast looked grey, like a boil in the bag ready meal and my bacon baguette had little taste or colour. Pity, as they are sat on a gold mine, perhaps that’s the problem - they don’t need to worry about regular customers. Had 2 baguettes (I was with my wife) and 2 drinks (a pint & 1/2 of lager), it cost £22, I don’t mind paying this, but not for something I could get in a back street cafe for less than £15 that is far better quality.

We managed to grab a coffee and a cake in the sunshine and reflect on a beautiful day in Tintern. The small array of shops supporting small businesses of lical handicraft in the midst of a historical water mill that had once been an integral part of the local iron industry!!!

Abbey Mill restaurant is comfortable and welcoming, with the flexibility of stopping for a cuppa or a full meal - whatever you want. Plenty of choice on the menu. The food was hot and tasty and the service was pleasant. On a sunny day I can think of nothing nicer than sitting outside soaking up the scenery.

Stopped for lunch as looked nice and was able to park. Staff were lovely. Long wait for food but felt very relaxed and was nice not to be rushed. Lovely range of cider and the house red is nice. Ordered the Dragon Pie which stated it was beef red wine and chilli and very hot. Couldn't taste the red wine or the chilli and was worried i had been given the wrong pie but i was hungry and it was alright so i didn't mention it. The portions are HUGE and very good value for money. My mum had the beef and ale pie which is a winner. Had to pay by card in the shop next door but at least they took cards. Will return but will be trying something else on the menu instead as the Dragon Pie was very disappointing which was a shame but still enjoyed lunch as the views were lovely.

There a some great choices of places to eat before or after a walk / cycle around Tintern area and this place is one of them. It is a bit chaotic in the summer with all the visitors tripping over one another, so its far more pleasant to sit and enjoy your food over winter weekends there and early spring - its the same for all places in Tintern. The home made food is delightful, and although I no longer eat most meats, their sausages in a yorkshire pudding are gorgeous. The vegetarian food is ok - and if the only thing I would avoid is the Tuna baguette which is really just a baguette with mayonnaise - a lot - and if you're ucky a small amount of Tuna. The place is old but charming and dog friendly and there is a gift shop attached to the side.

There was no notice asking to wait and be seated, or just sit. Staff sort of OK but one waitress was really miserable . On the menu it said that good food was worth waiting for, 45 min wait for a soup which was insipid, the chicken and meat pie was average but the veg served with it was frozen and just heated through and it tasted horrible in fact upset my stomach. Will not be going back there soon. Had to go to another shop on site to pay, no paying facilities in restaurant if that’s what you call it, with no explanation as to why?

Have avoided for some time as in our experience historically this cafe/restaurant served drinks then the associated food some time later. Nonetheless we like to try to make use of local businesses wherever possible so tried lunch here, but things haven’t changed sadly. Waited nearly 10 minutes for a waitress. Ordered simplest thing possible, 2 cheese and tomato baguettes and tea for two. Tea arrived then no sign of baguettes. By the time (20+ minutes later) the tea had gone cold and people at three other tables who had arrived and ordered after us had already been served (one having finished and already left!), we enquired when the order would arrive and were advised “soon”. We were also told orders were being processed in order..... really?

We sadly didn't get to sample a full lunch here as we didn't have much time, but the hot Chelsea bun and tea deal hit the spot. The menu looked interesting and lots of people were eating there. Being part of the complex with an art gallery and craft shop made it an interesting stop.

Just stopped here for an afternoon coffee and tea with my in-laws. The cappuccino I had was basically a cup of hot milk! No strength to it at all really couldn't drink it! The tea was a good strength but the teapot was in desperate need of a good clean. Smeary looking stainless steel and a year of tea stain on the inside of the spout. Just doesn't give a good impression. Won't be calling here again. Place really needs an update and makeover but guess they have a prime position so don't need to rely on regular customers.

Great staff and great food. Very good with my odd allergy.Would highly recommend it as it's the best Chinese in the area, I moved a little further away from abergavenny but still travel for this chinese takeaway as I have not found better! Thank you to the staff for their patients and professionalism, and the food is 👍

A solid Wetherspoons. Service was quick and efficient despite it being absolutely rammed. Tables clean and staff were very proactive in doing rounds to remove dishes and glasses that you were finished with. Generally seemed to have a lot more staff than most Wetherspoons pubs - maybe they employed more people for the busy Christmas period. Food was quickly delivered to the table and what exactly what you'd expect: no thrills and good enough for the money - especially given how cheap a decent pint of cider is here.

My friend booked a table for six a good six weeks in advance, only to find on turning up there was no record of our booking. It was only by luck that as the customer foot print was low that we were able to get a table. When we asked what went wrong reference our booking, no explanation was given. This would never have happened under the previous ownership.
