The Bell Hanger in Monmouthshire

Today was out mowing lawns in our community. FREE OF CHARGE for the older generation. Yep on a Sunday! Went in The Bell Hanger Weatherspoons for a bells and coke. Bought it went loo. They collected my glass! Went to bar and the women said “your fault for leaving it unattended”. Asked them to look at cameras she said “your fault for leaving it unattended”. We go for breakfast every day there, I take the lads for a pint every day there. Customers were saying they would buy me another drink but not the point! Such a shame 👎 Guessing as not seen her before (even tho the area manager said hi while sat with her today) that she didn’t know me…. Gardener, hi vis, landscaping yep she’s assumed I’m living in a caravan too. Chepstow 🥹

Rude staff, rude ‘manager’ and disgusting customer service. I have been in many pubs and restaurants over the years but the treatment of customers by the staff is appalling. Vote with your feet folks, there are plenty of other places to go in Chepstow where the owners, managers and staff appreciate your business. I have nothing more to say than the purely shocking attitude of all members of staff from the bar staff to the manager (Paul) is unprofessional and unwelcoming. Avoid like the plague - we will not be returning.

Nice pub, very big, not bad service considering they said they were short staffed! The chunks of tuna under my ham and cheese panini were a suprise though..

Terrible experience here, on a recent weekday lunch, with my elderly parents and 23- year-old daughter. The fish and chips were good, but the curry was cold, undercooked, and the naan bread stale. However our real grievance is with the staff. Uncooperative and stubborn, they refused to serve my 23-year-old daughter a glass of beer to consume with us because she did not have ID. I pointed out that as her mother I could vouch for her age, but the bartender refused point blank. I therefore compliantly accepted that 1 drink be removed from the order. However, for some reason the bartender went on to serve my daughter's beer anyway. Assuming this meant that it was OK after all, I paid for it, and we took the drinks to the table. But a few minutes later the manager disrupted our meal to demand ID, again, and eventually took my daughter’s beer away. It was rude and embarrassing. The manager refused to apologise, nor did he offer to replace the drink or refund it, even after my father took him aside to express his outrage. All in all, and extremely unprofessional manner - the staff in this establishment visibly have no idea when and where to apply discretion with regard to their 'looking under 25' rule, and cannot tell the difference between a well-behaved young adult enjoying a beer as part of lunch with her family on a week day, and rowdy binge-drinking teenagers on a weekend night. All in all, this was a disagreeable experience that has left us a bad memory, and a very bad impression of this pub, and probably Wetherspoons at large. We will definitely not be returning here.

Wanted a quick drink and food. You know what your getting with wetherspoons

Quite quiet on arrival and only one serving. However, he dealt efficiently and quickly with the waiting customers. Very clean inside and a nice decor which helped to create a good atmosphere. The drinks were of a good quality and plenty to chose from. Ordered food easily and it was served quickly. The Gourmet steak was the best I've ever had in any Wetherspoons and any other place come to that for some time. My wife's food was warm and tasty. The whole experience was impressive and I made my feelings known to the staff. We will be back. Thank you.

Family friendly, great choice of food, great price, lots of space

Typical Weatherspoons, Always reliable!

Has smelt quite bad by the stairs /lift for a few weeks now. Although raised the issue multiple times it still remains. Seemingly the recent reviews also back this up. I don’t think I’ll be rushing back again. Sad as I used to come often.

Popped in as we were in the area, choice was good, Delivered quickly, and nice staff, everything about the visit was good.

Great pub which I had not visited before. Food was quick and plenty of chips and peas with the fish. Great atmosphere and friendly staff.

Lovely atmosphere and a young girl serving who was helpful. The male bar staff acted like it was z hardship to serve me.

Stopped off for breakfast on the way to Cardiff. Impressive Spoons with interesting ‘bell’ sculpture! Very good breakfast, beans were hot, unusual for Wetherspoons!

After pointing out that the reason for them asking someone else to leave was incorrect (for being sick in the toilet because he had something on his coat - when it was on there before he even went in there) I was not only told to leave too, but left stood at the bar the next time I went in, with no one (including the same pr*ck manager) having the balls to say I was banned. Not the manager of the place (the Scottish guy who seems ok, but another one). Ah well, foods usually sh*t anyway.

Great place for a group gathering or a cheeky breakfast !

Nice breakfast, all nice and warm and appeared freshly cooked. Fairly quiet initially but filled up as it was Race day at Chepstow Race Course.

I stopped in after not being in a wetherspoons for the best part of 3 years after reading many reviews good and bad I thought it would be a good opportunity to drop in and see how things are running now.. I set myself at a table with my mug of coffee as I intended to get some work done whilst enjoying the "Spoons" Ambience. The pub was fairly busy being a Saturday just after lunchtime with a game of rugby being shown on the big screen. I did not have any food but had noticed a sizeable price increase including the one that shocked me £4.23! When did a bowl of Wetherspoons chips become so expensive??!! Anyway, I enjoyed the coffee in its unlimited form alongside the Pint of Thatchers Gold in which I sampled. The thatchers was ordered via the App and the delivery time was around 12 minutes, seeing how busy it was this is more than acceptable. All the staff seemed to be happy with a positive attitude, and even one of the staff stopping to chat with me which was a nice touch. As my laptop began to run out of Battery power I asked the manager if there was anywhere that I could plug in to continue my work, he said there were a couple of plug sockets but all those tables were taken. It was nice to see tables getting cleared and staff that seemed happy or that is how they portrayed themselves, which is a pleasant find in a wetherspoons pub from the usual grunt and nod. Things do have seemed to improve here at the Bellhanger and I will without doubt return in future for some food. Finally the Bellhanger have sorted the issues out and it was a very pleasant afternoon indeed.

My first Wetherspoons and it was excellent

Mixed grill, (large). Without doubt, the worst meal ever in a Weatherspoons. Floor under table, goodness knows when last cleaned. Plates cold. The meats, very thin, tough and dried out and cool. Chips warm. Sausage cool. Brewers Fayre superior.

Have to always nice to go there quite relaxing place. And great value for money

Normal wetherspoon, although I ordered an alcoholic drink and got ID, but didn't have ID on me. Got refused a replacement drink or a refund. I'm 27 and I've worked for spoons for 6 years, while I understand the wetherspoon policy, I've always operated under the mantra that repeat custom is the best custom as they keep you going through the quiet months. I didn't care about the refund, I didn't care about being ID, I care about the poor service this wetherspoon is giving customers letting down the rest of the company.

Won't call it the most excellently staffed. But it does draw a crowd so. The meal though is surprisingly excellent for the price and there is a nice atmosphere.

I recommend anyone to try thier meals very fantastic tasty meals served in a friendly atmosphere

Lovely food good ambience nice warm place

Very disappointed. We entered at about 11:30. There were plenty of empty tables but they were all dirty and had not been cleaned. There were staff standing around chatting to each other . They hardly moved when asked to clear a table. In the end we cleared a table our selves. They gave us cleaning materials to do the job!! Whoever manages the establishment clearly has no control over staff. We were relatively happy with the food but it could have been hotter.

Visited on a Sunday morning. All tables available, and there were quite a few, were still covered with previous customers plates etc. I cleared a table and asked at the bar, where there were 4 assistants chatting, as nobody waiting to be served, for something to wipe table and was given disinfectant and a cloth. No help offered or apology. Poor management and not something I expected from paid employees. We ordered breakfasts, and although brilliant for the price, it was luke warm. Sadly I felt that to mention it would be a waste of time as nobody seemed they would be particularly interested or bothered. The service was bad and the pub messy.

Really nice beautiful decor and lighting. Could tell they were short-staffed though, they were behind on table clearing and some other things, but they were all friendly and food came fairly quickly. Defo would go there again.

We had a lovely spot by the large fireplace which was lovely. They took our food to the wrong table initially but otherwise all ok. We used the app to order.

Popped in for hot chocolate only. We like this spoons quite spread out and nice staff.

Absolutely awful experience, duty manager told us it’ll be 40mins for food and we ended up waiting for 85mins. When asked for the food timing she wasn’t very friendly! Won’t be back here. We were also told we can’t have hash browns or toast due to timing although I saw a couple who ordered after who managed to get toast and hash browns arrived at 1pm. We ordered at 12.10pm just 10mins shy of the breakfast.

Just one young lady working behind the bar, she was busy but kept smiling and efficient, food wasn't long coming and was hot and good

The service was very poor. We ordered 2 coffee through the app, and it took more than 25 minutes to give us 2 empty mugs to do our coffee.

blonde haired manager was completely rude and had a disgusting attitude towards me, staff member was nice, food cold and soggy, refused to refund after not giving me my drinks, caught blonde haired manager talking about me in a disrespectful way behind my back to a bartender not happy about this at all.

I dunno what they've done but our spoons just keeps getting better. Food is great, I recommend the burgers, any of them. 😁

Visited Chepstow today while on holiday, We thought we would try The Bell hanger for food we found a table had to remove plates and clean ourselves due to the lack of staff doing so. We then decided to order food and drinks using the app on the menu for table service. We waited over 30 minutes for drinks to arrive these were just soft drinks nothing exciting for 5 adults and 7 children. I visited the bar 3 times eventually collecting the drinks myself carrying them to the table, we then awaited food a further 25 minutes this was served very cold when it eventually arrived they even forgot one children's meal, we had a further 10+ minutes to wait for. Another great fail from this branch cutlery a key part for eating a meal we had to visit the kitchen due to the lack of any being supplied with our meals. The duty manager needs some training on customer service she was absolutely vile to myself and many other customers. We paid over £100 to use this facility for her to be rude because we asked for our drinks and how long food would take shouting and being sarcastic doesn't score you any good feedback. JD wether spoons please can you investigate this branch issue and maybe invest in the branch duty manager for training or simply remove the app system if it isn't going to work for your business. Thanks

Black curly hair on top of my food, sent back for it to be returned with hot nuggets and then cold chips and strips.. had to search for mayonnaise, cutlery had egg on knife and fork with water splatter marks on it.. asked for a refund and told no but can offer a free dessert- I refused and walked out unhappy and still hungry and £9 lighter! Won’t return!

Always a problem on Curry night Thursday...who wants a cold naan (or samosas/ bhaji's )AFTER your halfway through your meal? Serve everything warm together (although the poppadums could come first WITH dips) Big up for supplying mango chutney now!

Needed a late lunch in Chepstow after visiting castle. Weatherspoons did the job. Warm inside and with friendly staff, an afternoon special of (small) fish and chips arrived, more than plenty for us and a pint of beer/NZ Blanc to accompany it. Fish nicely cooked, moist in a crispy batter. Excellent value. Need to repair 'out of order' lift for accessing disabled WC pronto -the only criticism.

Great food. Great prices. Can't beat the food deals.

Worst breakfast I've ever eaten.......

Visited here numerous times while staying in Chepstow for the weekend. What a lovely inviting place. The staff are super friendly and efficient the service is excellent and the food was exceptional. Well done

4th time visiting while in Chepstow. Always go for scampi and chips. Slightly above average for a "spoons" Scampi was hot, chips tepid, mushy pea's cold. Staff at the bar took so long to serve me, someone else had come in after me and taken my table. Bar staff very young and well below average. They had no idea who to serve in order and not very polite. Table service was good, very polite and he was cleaning tables in between serving. Over all, very clean place too eat.

Visited on a Saturday and a Sunday whilst attending an event in the town and was impressed on both occasions with the speedy service via the app and the general upkeep of the establishment - clearly a well-run team in place on both days. Staff were friendly and respectful. The ham & mushroom pizza on the Sunday was very good for the price.

Just popped in for lunch today, wife had Katso grilled chicken I had gourmet steak cooked medium rare, steak so tender and cooked absolutely right, well done to all staff.

Popped in on Tuesday evening for a meal I had the steak and it was delicious. In fact it was the best meal I have ever had in any of the Wetherspoons we have been in. The steak was cooked to perfection we have been to some restaurants and paid triple the price and it was nowhere has good We will be back

Cheap food, not the best quality but you get what you pay for. The staff are efficient.

This pub is large and busy. Set in the town centre it is a great meeting place . The beer and food is of a good quality. Friendly service and fair prices making it great value with a great atmosphere.

'Nice Spoons' a review says, & I'd agree . First local pub I tried wasn't serving food ( "stopped at 3") so next choice was here: Toilets clean, pub cool & spacious, offered chance to try an IPA, chose steak & Mediterranean salad & not disappointed. Beer pleasant & ( ok I was hungry!) Steak very succulent,cooked as I requested & salad tasty. So I'm a happy customer & happy to visit again . Thanks :)

Stood at the bar nearly 10 minutes when the staff completely ignore on two times,I left and a probable £40 sale was lost the service in any Wetherspoons and I have currently visited 257 in Britain

Have visited this JDW when visiting Chepstow on many occasions ... Nice set up and you know what to expect !

The food was delicious and the service was brilliant. My only complaint was that there were flies everywhere trying to get to the food.
