Weeks Fish & Chips in Monmouthshire

Having visited the nearby castle, we were looking for something to eat and discovered No. 12 Fish & Chips. We ordered a large cod and chips to share, and these were freshly cooked to order. The staff were extremely polite and it was a generous portion at an affordable price too. If we lived in or near Chepstow, we would become regular customers without question.

Last visit was 3 years ago, but decided to try again today. Wow, what an improvement, you chap serving (lunchtime on Saturday 5th June) was polite, efficient and just generally a pleasure to deal with. But it was the Cod and Chips that blew us away, until now the best we had had was at Rick Steins in Padstow, they were delicious, but today that crown goes to here. Seriously the best we have ever had anywhere in the UK. We will be back again very soon!

We visited on 27th May, had good service and good food so returned. HOWEVER!! Last evening 12 of us visited we got there just before 7:30, staff were slow and were obviously annoyed that we were there, half way through serving the man firstly refused to cook a vegetarian item for one person, then aggressively announced to everyone that they would not cook anything else as they were closing at 8. IT WAS 7:40! the attitude from both staff was awful.Will never return againFirstly ... it's not what you say it's the way that you say it, staff with attitude.Secondly as a business awful attitude, don't they want business?

Thought I'd give it a go as heard they had improved lately. How wrong was that info? Staff are all very young and inexperienced, about a quarter of my chips were black and bruised, the fish was over cooked and not fresh, most likely frozen so chewy and dry and then to add insult to injury I found a long black hair once I had nearly finished eating it. I won't be going back. This was a second chance to try compare to Kibbys in Bulwark and they don't get anywhere close to the quality there. A big thumbs down from me. Cannot understand how they are so busy on a weekend.

Went to get a quick bag of chips. There are other chip shops in town and like others I think I should have gone to one of them instead of this. It wasn’t busy but still had to wait a long time. Never mind I thought at least they will be fresh. How mistaken was I! I was served a measly handful of chips which was very small for the very high price. The chips were dry and old from an old batch, which I of course didn’t realise until I was away from the shop. I don’t write many reviews, but these were so bad I thought I would pit a review to warn others. I’m a qualified chef so I know about food, I’m not a fussy customer but like simple food cooked well. These were simple but not cooked well at all. Sorry! But it really was that bad.

Where can you go to get good fish and chips? Certainly not here. We were very hungry and wanted to eat before crossing back into England. The last review seemed positive so we ordered takeaway. The fish was a small overcooked portion and the chips were soggy. Taste overall ok but why can’t those who are in the business of frying get it right?

Had fish and chips and vegetarian sausage here today was lovely. Best chips I've tasted. Ate in, had prompt service and people very nice.

Absolutely awful! Ordered 3 haddock and chips as a takeaway and it was absolutely terrible. The fish was dry and the batter was hard and inedible. I think the food had been hanging around for a long time before I collected it. When I contacted them I spoke to someone called Mel and she was rude and arrogant. AVOID.

I’ve always been very impressed by this shop since the take-over.My usual order of “haddock,chips and a curry sauce please” has never failed to impress me,both considering quality and portion size! The curry sauce is perfect for me and I’ve tried several others in the area.Staff have always been polite and helpful,cooking everything to order and it certainly always seems popular with others,which is always a good sign! Am looking forward to eating in with my granddaughter in the near future as there are plenty of children’s choices.Last but not least,they have my favourite canned shandy which I haven’t been able to find anywhere else since migrating from Bristol a few years back.Happy days!!!

Visited today. Haven't been for a while but used to visit weekly. Not the same at all. No table service just scruffy notes on the table instructing order at the till. So for elderly and disabled and lots of customers are its more difficult. Told it was because of people not paying and adding. Its what they do in Weatherspoons. When we went to sit back down our table was gone.My sister ordered garden peas. They didnt come. Oh says the girl. Your peas will be about 10 minutes.Shall we have peas for dessert then?Gone downhill.

Great fish-cooed to order. Always tastes like fish and chips should do. Nice little restaurant as well if you don't fancy a take away

First visit since change of ownership. The place is clean and bright and the staff are pleasant but neither of us enjoyed our haddock which consisted of chewy batter and very dry fish. The chips were fine and portions generous. We’ll give it one more try as it may have just been a one-off.

Chips were very nice and overall the food was great, just fish on the small size. However nice batter on the fish.

Visited for a bite to eat, not long after 4pm.There were a couple of people sat eating in,so by no means busy.Waited a while before we were even acknowledged, only to be told 'shes cashing up the till.' we weren't asked what we wanted (the lady behind the frier can't take orders, I presume).Continued waiting for a while longer, then decided to leave.I've had chips here before and they were pretty average.Not great service, why cash up a till half way through service?!Very odd.

Came across this restaurant by chance. We had our fish and chips in their spotless restaurant. My wife and I both agreed that the food was of the best we have ever had in a fish shop. The portions were excellent. We were served by a waitress who was both attentive and pleasant. We intend to visit the area again, and will most certainly call in for lunch.

Best chips I’ve had for a long time but their faggots were almost inedible. We had a pot of tea for two with just one tea bag. The staff just seemed that they didn’t want to be there. For me “a bag of chips please” and eat elsewhere. Sorry.

We visited Chepstow for the evening and although not hugely hungry, as still suffering the over indulgence of Christmas, we were tempted, like Bisto Kids, by the smell of chips wafting down the High St. We shared one portion of cod bites, chips & curry sauce which we ate under the Christmas lit trees of a twinkling courtyard ... was delicious : proper old fashioned chips made of potatoes, freshly cooked chunky white flakes of cod encased in superlight crispy batter and little pot of fruity curry sauce to dip into. I am quite fussy about food quality and am lucky to have a good local fish & chip shop however this was nearly half the price of our usual plaice at equivalent deliciousness ... top marks

Food wasn’t as nice as it has been in the past, when it was weeks it was delicious. The fish and chicken nuggets were dry and over cooked as well as being greasy, the chips were ok.

Weve just had a family takeaway from this chip shop. The food was appauling. The chips looked like they had been left for several hours and then reheated. The cod bites were soggy and tasteless. The mushy peas were a green watery liquid. The only eatable part of the meal were the bread rolls from the chip butty.

Picked up a takeaway cod & chips today and it was so awful my husband could not eat half of it. The chips looked like they had been hanging around and reheated with black inside the chips and the fish had bits in it that were chewy and inedible. Will not be returning

Always really good fish and Chips which we have as a take away fortnightly. The staff are friendly and the kitchen, waiting and eating places are clean and bright.

Stopped off for Fish & Chips prior to a concert at the Castle. We noticed how clean and inviting it looked so decided to eat in.

Always takes so long to get any food, understand food cooked fresh but why is half a big order sat in the heat cupboard rather than supplying the guy who just wants a bag of chips !!!!!!!!this is insane, they have no idea what they’re doing or how to run a fast food outlet and the service is terrible and don’t dare ask them how long your food will take as looks would kill!!!

Had a craving for fish and chips when on ‘date day’ with my other half. Curry sauce was best I’ve had, chips good, but fish and better average at best.

This has been taken over recently. Staffed only by people with no common sense. We had to wait 25 minutes for cod and chips. The message says a "few minutes to cook your fish", it wasn't a few and the queue grew and grew with angry chuntering all round. Most people were waiting for fish which they only cook to order, this is ridiculous on a busy Friday teatime. I used to love this chip shop but I won't be going back.

This chippie is spotlessly clean with staff to be proud of. We ate in the adjoining restaurant which was well furnished and comfortable.

We called at this chip shop just as it was closing but Jess and Naomi made the three of us very welcome and the food was excellent and we would recommend this excellent chip shop

The food and service was okay except that Chinese guy(?) insisted to speak Cantonese to us even though I asked him to speak in English because I could hardly understand what he was saying. Seriously what made you think that two people will travel to Chepstow by their selves and don't even speak English?

After many months of coming here for cod bites and chips today was my last absolutely disgusting what we were served what a waste of £13.10 couldn't eat it chips was brunt looked like they'd been in the fryer several times today cod bites were rock hard no12 shameful you've lost my custom for good only wish we went to subway or anywhere but here

i went to grab a bag of chips and chicken nuggets to eat before I got on the bus home. the service was very poor and not friendly which was not a good sign. when i got my order the chicken nuggets was small portion of 4 for 3.00 something and the chips. well this chips are like mush when you try to use a fork to eat them and after trying to eat the bag all the chips just turning to a bag of mush

We had a takeaway of fish and chips on Saturday evening. Food tasted amazing but wish the service was the same! I appreciate it was a takeaway chippy meal but that doesn't excuse the rudeness and ignorant attitude of the lady on the till. Manners are free! A real shame as the food is lovely.

Twice I have been here and the food is a cut above the norm. It's really good.

Fish and chips in chepstow is very clean place to visit and eat and they do very good food and drink the staff are very nice and warm and friendly and very helpful

Tuesday at 1pm. We unfortunately received the 'scrag end' of the chips which were lukewarm and not pleasant. Scampi freshly ordered arrived overcooked. Cheese and onion pasty revolting and probably microwaved as pastry was soft and soggy. Freshly cooked fish was lovely but spoilt by the substandard chips. Service was okay and surroundings clean enough. Three vegetarian options: vegetarian sausage, burger and cheese and onion pasty - didn't explore whether the sausage/burger were suitable for vegans. Nice to see gluten free option available occasionally. Afraid we won't be visiting again.

A table for 4, mid afternoon Saturday. The fish, chips and mushy peas were all very good, freshly cooked and tasty. Everything else was hard work in terms of getting it to the table.

I have never taken so long to be served in a chip shop in my life. Most people had phoned orders through having obviously realising this was the only way to get served. We waited and waited and waited whilst orders and people in the cafe area were served. Had to threaten to leave and have our money back before being served. The onion rings must have been kept warm for days and were inedible and the chips not great either. The staff looked stressed and miserable. Avoid this place if you can.

From the outside, this looks like a pleasant fish & chip takeaway/restaurant. However portions are small, quality is average and prices are high. If you really want decent fish & chips in this area, then there's only one place to go. Kibby's. (see my separate review).

My wife and me decided to call in for a cup of tea, you actually get a pot per person, we both enjoyed the tea, I thought I'd try the chips, I certainly wasn't disappointed they were really really nice the staff seem friendly, we will call here again and have a full meal but I can recommend their chips.

My dad and I popped in after a busy day and were not disappointed with our take away F & C's. They were plentiful and well cooked. Thumbs up and would recommend and visit again. Thanks

Once again I returned to this establishment and I wasn't disappointed. Good value and excellently cooked haddock and chips (this time with coleslaw - just for the healthy option). Clean and comfortable seating, and friendly and helpful staff particularly the young lady doing the frying. I cannot recommend this restaurant to highly, fine dinning it may not be but that does not detract from good service and a good product.

The food was cooked fresh. Take away or eat in. Lengthy menus. A busy little place. it looked clean and there seemed to be regulars as they staff were very chatty with the customers

The girl on the till clearly didn't want to be in work and it was evident she couldn't really be bothered. I left the shop to go to buy milk and checked my receipt as I thought the bill was cheap, she had only charged me for one large fish and chips instead of 2 which also meant it wouldn't be cooked so I had to go back in and order another one. I collected my food and I was about to leave when my son noticed that the same girl hadn't given us the drink that came with the kids meal so had to go to the counter again. This wouldn't have been too bad if the food had been good but unfortunately it was awful. The fish was very dry and over cooked, the batter was disgusting and was obviously in the fryer for way too long. This used to be a good fish and chip shop but I certainly won't be going again, it was expensive for a terrible meal.

Service is often slow and the restaurant is cold in the winter, but for the traditional menu you will be good. Portions are a bit small.

Ordered chips cheese and gravy and a savaloy unfortunately it was awful savaloy was like a rubber ladies stick chips were way overdone maybe double cooked and the cheese and gravy we had to add yourself as it was a dusting of each very disappointed as we always used this chip shop it's gone very down hill not again I'm afraid

First time to Chepstow and we wanted to have a meal, and we found this lively place.We had the cod and chips from a very good menu choice. And they were lovely.Very highly recommended

We have used this restaurant and take away for several years, it was one of our favourites when under previous management. Following it being taken on by Weeks we noticed a reduction in quality and service but still used the take away. Last night, Friday, the shop and restaurant were busy so there was a long wait, however it looked like everything was going to be freshly cooked. I ordered two large cod, a large portion of chips and curry sauce.We were looking forward to a good meal but were very disappointed. The chips weren't at all good, poor quality potatoes and under cooked, however it was the fish which really let Weeks down, both being pretty dry and considering they were supposed to be two large cod I think you probably would have got more out of a single fish finger.Having waited so long and spending nearly £15.00 on awful food I will being going elsewhere in future.

This restaurant was clean - the food was exceptional, the fish was white and flaky, batter thin and crisp, chips very tasty with very little fat. The staff were very friendly. Would highly recommend - you will not be disappointed.

This is on the main street and slightly obscured by lay out of buildings in this old fortified town.Staff were extremely pleasant and gave us menu to order at table.Haddock and chips and cod with chips were served quickly with peas and tartare sauce and drinks. Reasonably priced and good value for money.

I had intended on a curry but the preferred restaurant was shut so had a wander around and found Weeks. I found the staff welcoming and the place spotlessly clean. I enjoyed a large cod with chips and mushy peas. Very reasonably priced and the cod was excellent with a tempting thin batter. One of the few restaurants I have been in where the chef/head fryer actually came round to enquire if everything was fine. I will certainly be back if in Chepstow again.

Truth be, we swap our allegiances around with the local chippies.But recently , we have been inclined to keep with this one.First, it's consistent. You get a lovely piece of fish, with super batter, moist not soggy.Plus the chips are moist and tasty.There is a wait, but you get fresh food.Recommended. But if you join the loyalty scheme after 10 fish, you get one free, however, it's cod. No good for haddock lovers.No bother though

Regular customer, always good food. Service does vary, enthusiastic young staff, I think a little assistance is needed. Not a critisisim of the servers, more training would be helpful !

Chepstow has one redeeming feature - Weeks F&C!! The fish helping were generous cooked fresh in a wonderful light batter. What more can you ask for? The staff were so apologetic that one of the pieces of fish broke were being served - well you should have seen how it broke up while I was tucking in!! Thanks for restoring my faith in Welsh fish and chips.

Sat in to have my meal. The food was excellent and the service also. If you are in Chepstow and are looking for a place to eat you must try Weeks.

Really good fish and chips but each order is cooked to order which takes time. Other wise well worth a visit.

I only visit this place on the last Sunday of the month when they change the oil. This allows them to offer gluten free and dairy free fish and chips for the day before the glutenous batter is used for people without such intolerances. I'd fully recommend those days, but you will have to book and eat before 4pm as that is when the start service fish with normal batter. Well worth a trip

Visited this evening around 7pm for takeaway. Young assistant serving was unable to say please or thank you and rolled her eyes in response to any query. Another young server seemed pleasant enough. When I got home fish was hot, chips lukewarm. Buying food should be a pleasant experience - I don't think the unfortunate female serving has any idea of what customer service is, why it is necessary and what her role entails. I will not return. I am a SME owner - I would be horrified if this was my business.

We're local and visit often. Younger girls are really friendly and helpful however the older woman really needs training in customer service as she has attitude problems.

We were tipped off by a local that this was the place to go for excellent Fish & Chips – and we were not disappointed! There were other foods offered, but this was our first fish & chip shop after arriving in Great Britain, so we just wanted fish. We did not have to wait long for our meal, and it was a good quality, too! Being unfamiliar with the area, we found that it was not hard to find the shop using our GPS, but parking nearby was more of a challenge. We ended up parking in the Welsh Street Car Park, which was probably less than a 5 minute walk.

If you have 15 minutes to spare the food is average. I have been 3 times in the last month. Every time i have been I had to wait over 7 minutes before one of the 5 staff working could be bothered to pay enough attention to the front counter to even acknowledge my presence. Walking past you to the fridge to get drinks for seated clientel who seem to be the only concern. In fact the service is so bad my co workers and i joke about sending out a search party if we spend longer than 30 minutes to get some chips. Today was no different as i watched the staff discuss tartar sauce for at least 2 while the cook spent a good deal of time away from the fryer with no one concerned food was cooking in it and no one was checking it. Eventually my order was put in a container and the server liberally doused it with salt and vinegar even though she never asked if i wanted either but as i had been there so long i just couldn't be bother to say anything. The time you ask. 2.30 how many customers in the shop 3 seated and myself. How many staff 4 i could see. You think the first time it may be an off day but no this is everyday and every time. The fish was ok the chips were cold and Tasted like they had been refried to warm them up as they hadn't sold over lunch time. Seriously don't waste your time. I won't be back.

Arrived in Chepstow just after 6pm and most of the pubs had stopped serving food so we headed for Weeks Fish n Chips.The food was excellent with no complaints from the kids & the portions were very generous!The staff were very friendly and efficient & the food arrived quickly...so we had nothing to moan about & we would recommend this 'plaice' to others.

High quality fish n chips, seating area comfortable and adequate, food was very tasty. Proper cod. Ticked all the boxes for fish n chips - twas hot, fresh, filling and very very moreish.

Good fish and chips but the staff let the place down bye being slow the management need to get better trained staff and have more staff. If anyone comes here be prepared to wait ages.

Sunday evening in Chepstow and many places finish cooking at 6pm so we decided to pop in here for fish & chips and were glad we did. Place is spotless with comfortable booths and friendly, attentive staff. Plus it has a wine list!We had cod & chips, fishcake and pea fritter along with some red wine. An excellent meal at a great price. Will definitely come here again next time in Chepstow.

Have always visited Weeks after a day of great walking that the area offers. The restaurant is clean, bright and the service good. The Fish and Chips are probably the best we have had anywhere in the UK. The portions are generous and the fish batter is crispy (not burnt) and free from the often encountered greasy appearance and taste.Lovely pot of tea as well. Highly recommended.

What I like about this place is they put all the hot food into a nice litle cardboard box , neat and tidy. (Well they did for me) and it's only s very short walk around the corner from all the bus stops. Maybe a bit more expensive than some other chip shops but nice anyway.

Met my granddaughter from school and wanted somewhere near for tea.Having written a poor review on their takeaway service,some time ago,l thought let's try the restaurant side. Must say it was OK,children's menu suited us ,also do oaps menu. Burger and chips, plus soft drink. I did also have a small bottle of wine. Waitress very pleasant and nothing was too much trouble. Nice clean toilets. Granddaughter can't wait to return.

On visiting Chepstow for the day we were generally disappointed by the choice of lunch opportunities in the central area.We decided on Weeks as my colleague had read a good review.We were greeted warmly and the service was very good throughout. The value was also quite good. However both my chicken (advertised as spit roasted) and my chips were dry and not that good.My tip, if you decide to eat here, is to look (where relevant) at the special offers for children and senior citizens.

I'm not going to beat about the bush. I love this place. Absolutely love it. Believe me, I've eaten a lot of fish and chips in my time, and all over the country. I'm in my 40s now and I've come to the conclusion that Weeks Fish & Chips in Chepstow is among the very best in the UK. Put it this way, any waitress who asks first and foremost if you would like tartar sauce and lemon with your battered cod, has got to be proud of the fish she's serving, hasn't she? I'd like to say an extra-special thank-you to the waitress who served me, as her service was perfect - considerate, thoughtful and delivered with genuine human warmth - none of these fake smiles that you sometimes get - but a sincere aim to ensure that the customer is 100% satisfied. People like that are worth their weight in gold. What more can I say? If you fancy yourself as a fish 'n' chip connoisseur, try Weeks, you won't be disappointed.

The staff are really friendly, the food is cooked to order and always tastes amazing, whether you eat in or take out.

Always been treated nicely here, never had anything bad to say apart from lately the chips have changed and they aren't very nice, I don't like how the chips are served on their own in a paper bag it should be the takeaway boxes even if it is just chips on its own. They have the nicest chicken nuggets I buy them on their own all the time they are amazing.

Staff unfriendly, my sausage had been left out too long hence it was dry on one side. It was an interesting combination of half normal and half battered. Personally not something I would recommend...Chicken was dry but edible none the lessBut chips were top form, and the restaurant decor and design was amazing! Had booths like an American diner!

Was more of less ignore by the young girl serving, when i gave up and asked to order she was very polite but did not give the impression she knew what she was doing.Food took 20 mins to arrive and in that time i noticed how dirty the place was, not the tables surfaces but things like the lights (filled with dead flies, just 2 ft above the table and my food).Finally gave up waiting for the bill as waitress had vanished and paid at the counter, again seems even that was confusing for the staff. Basic fish and chips (small portion) and a soft drink came to £7 for one person - so not even cheap.

Decent tasty food - chips were nicely cooked and the battered sausage wasn't bad either. Curry sauce didn't have much taste to it though - rather bland indeed. And the customer service was rather poor

We decided to visit Chepstow for the day and wanted something to eat we found this chippy and tried the food and to my surprise it was really good I had chicken and chips and the wife had sausage and chips all freshly cooked and tasted nice the staff has good customer service and very pleasant.

Used this takeaway many times. Food is great. The service however, lacks badly. We visited yesterday evening. The young ladies serving were very busy with a large order which they were packing into cardboard boxes on the floor of the serving area of the shop. I placed my order and the young ladies then proceeded to deliver the large order in the cardboard boxes to the ordering party (the Conservative Club in Chepstow within 5 minutes walking distance). Whilst waiting for my order to be cooked, the young ladies returned to the shop and immediately came around to the serving area of the shop – I spoke with one of the young ladies and enquired if she planned to serve me my order as she had picked up a box and was about to fill it with food. I then asked if she would kindly wash her hands first. This did not go down well as she went to the rear of the shop to ‘assist’ her delivery colleague washing glass panels from the warming counter without obvious intention of returning to serve me or any other person for that matter. It was left to another young lady (who was stressed) to deal with the backlog of orders and customers. It did not appear that anyone of management capacity was present and to be fair the food we ordered and consumed was very tasty and enjoyable. I was obviously very taken aback that a trained person would lift a box from the floor, leave the premises, touch many other surfaces, return to the shop and proceed to handle food without even a thought for any hygiene standards relating to her job. I would question therefore the hygiene rating given to this establishment as the behaviour I witnessed appeared to me to be ‘norm’. I seriously doubt I will present my custom to them again despite the quality of the food. I have raised my concerns with Environmental Health at Monmouthshire CC.

I was in Chepstow on a business stayover feeling rather peckish. Thankfully I stumbled across this gem and filled my belly!Will be taking on the food challenge next time!

Came here based on the reviews- had takeaway so I cannot comment on the restaurant side... My husband said the fish was fresh and tasty. Though it was smaller than he was expecting, it ended up being the perfect amount. Half the time you go to a F&C shop, the chips just taste of grease- but these ones were fresh. Now where this place failed was the pea fritter... The batter tasted like fish and the peas did not taste or look fresh. The fritter put me off the rest of my meal. I think I'll come here only if I'm desperate for F&C in this area. Though certain things were good, it wasn't enough to make it stand out from others that we go to.

What's not to love ! Great fish and chips, always cooked to perfection. Definitely wellworth a Friday night visit ! Reasonable prices, great service !

After a long day helping my brother move house and spending a small fortune on the bridge toll we where in need of sustenance.....Spotted Weeks on a drive through Chepstow so called in.....Fish Chips and peas.....what can I say.....up there with the best.....all fish cooked to order.....friendly staff.....recommend to anyone.We used the take out can't comment on the restaurant

I suspect I would give this restaurant five stars if I had eaten here and not had a takeaway. Clean, bright with fish cooked (perfectly) to order. Even the mushy peas were a cut above. Everything packed in neat cardboard boxes. This is what a good chippie is all about. I am going to try eating in on my next visit. I hope they have lemon slices, Tabasco and mayo for the chips. I'll report because if all this comes together Weeks will go into my top quartile of fish and chips places.
