The Boat Inn in Monmouthshire

This pub is slightly hidden away on 'The Back' in Chepstow overlooking the River Wye. We had an excellent dinner on Saturday night using good local ingredients. My roasted rump of lamb was very good with minty mushy peas and mustard mashed potato. Good real ciders and local real ales on tap. Friendly service and dog friendly with dog beers and cocktails available.

It's a well run top pub in chepstow. It's not cheap by any standards but food is very good and service and staff are exceptional.

Had lunch with a friend, great atmosphere and food. Good selection of gluten free and vegan dishes on the menu. Serving staff very friendly and efficient. It was very busy so definitely recommend booking ahead.

What a fabulous pub! Clean and well run, very friendly and knowledgeable staff, great choices of food, well prepared and tasty. A really great place for a drink, meal and there is live music on Friday's, which when we were there was excellent - a Forest band called The Scowles. We will definitely be going back on a regular basis.

Lovely place just a shame like many pubs / restaurants they don't really cover for vegetarians. Veggie curry yet again as the main option.

Lovely Riverside pub with super staff, selection of beers and food! Had a two course meal, absolutely beautiful. Really lovely place to stop, drink, and eat. Part of historic Chepstow, having dated back to 1789, with then incumbents resident at time of Chartist transportation to Tasmania in 1840! It's definitely worth a stop for a warm welcome and delicious food 😊 and in warmer weather an amazing outside seating area.

Really magical setting and interior. Food was exceptional with huge portions. Staff were extremely friendly and went out of their way to organise a taxi for us after the meal.

Lovely atmosphere, delicious food, generous portions and above and beyond service! The bartender/server even ordered us a taxi! Highly recommended ❤️

Both the vegan and meat main dishes were very good. Service was polite and rapid, the atmosphere warm and friendly and the décor is as you would expect in a pub called “The Boat”! The booking was efficiently handled, including a last minute change in numbers. I recommend it!

Our second visit to the Boat and I can not recommend this place highly enough. The food was absolutely delicious and the outstanding service we received from the staff made our visit complete - so welcoming, friendly , efficient and professional - A quality that is lacking with so many other businesses. A special mention to our waitress Lilly who went above & beyond looking after us so well. We will definitely be returning to this truly wonderful establishment!

What an absolute gem of a place! Friendly staff, wonderful choice of food. We all ate off of the Festive menu and every dish was delicious. We especially liked the duck. Bang bang cauliflower was amazing too. Currently decorated nicely for Christmas - great atmosphere. Would highly recommend a visit.

Lovely local pub with tasty food and a good selection of local beers. Huge portion of delicious, steamy food, very friendly staff, wonderful design inside and a great location make it a great choice for a pint or Sunday roast. It's also very easy to book a table online!

We pipped into day for a light bite and a drink. It was nice and buay.We had a baby with us and the waitress lady was super helpful.(think it was annie) she helped us order from the table instead of trying to get to the bar with baby in tow. Reasonable priced ")

We had a meal for 8 people last night. The food and service was superb plus also not too expensive. Lovely spot opposite the river.

A quirky little place with a big heart. Staff very helpful and polite. Breakfast is superb. Pricing of drinks very reasonable and great entertainment at the weekend.

Found this gem of a pub by accident but loved it. Friendly efficient staff, great food at a reasonable price great atmosphere. Would highly recommend and we will definitely be returning.

We had chicken pie and chips and veg it was very nice .and a couple of beers .staff were nice and very quick serving us .will definitely be back

Sadly poor today which has annoyed me ...we went for lunch and I have given great reviews before ....the pate dish with salad, you get a salad without any dressing , 2 butters , a huge amount of pate and a thing they call a scone .....we had to ask for another scone ( thing ) to use the pate up otherwise you would have been eating it neat ... I had a mackerel salad which was ace , had dressing on , decent portion .....I also asked for battered onion rings , they were huge and beautifully crispy but ....but they were swimming in grease .... Won't stop us going back and I would have told them this as I find it a constructive criticism as opposed to a complaint ......but she who must be obeyed stopped me ....

Great Sunday lunch. Plenty of vegetables and tasty gravy. We had the roast beef which was cut thickly and the chicken breast. Just like home cooked. Service was very good too. Recommend.

With the nights drawing in and a chill in the air, the lovely outside marquee overlooking the river is only for the hardy. We hadn't been inside for years but thought it was time to give it a go. Our worse fears were that it would be half empty and cold. It was quite the reverse - warm and buzzing with customers. We were glad that we had booked a table - even though it is huge, all the tables were full (although there is an area upstairs that we didn't see). Despite the fact that they were busy the staff couldn't have been more efficient and charming. The menu was quite small but there were some specials on the board above the bar. All in all, another restaurant in Chepstow that I can recommend. We are quite well served now in the town - it was a bit bleak during the pandemic.

Food was appalling. Chips cold and curled up and greasing probably made early that morning and left. When complained (staff excellent) obviously placed in microwave but failed to remove lemon slice and small bowl of tata sauce. So these were hot! Chips still solid, curled...

Lovely place to have a drink on a summer day with live music playing when I went. Busy but lively place. Didn't stay so gave the rooms a 4 as didn't want to 0 it as I'm sure they are fine :)

The ultimate roast dinner can be found at The Boat Inn Chepstow! Worth every single penny! Plus even better to wash it down with a Pint of Hoff 🐻! Plus it’s dog friendly! 🐾 would highly recommend!

Can't comment on the rooms as haven't stayed but The Boat has become our new 'local' when visiting family in Chepstow. It is in a fab location right on the river with lots of outdoor space- perfect on a sunny afternoon. Can really recommend their Sunday Roasts (worth booking in advance as they're popular!). Great service from the team and good bar selection.

Nine of us, 6 adults and three children, with quite different food requirements, went for lunch during a 50th wedding anniversary weekend. We sat upstairs on a galleried landing in a timbered hall that had a lovely atmosphere. The food was of a high quality...

Ok burger, bread a bit too hard. Better with a binoche I would suggest. V good fish and chips. No ale on, so had to make do with lager so not ideal.

Visited on the 27/08/23. Visited a few times and still can't complain about the food. BUT....this visit I have to say, was a let down at the end. Ordered a large Rośe with a dash of soda and a large Hoff. To see the 2 drinks sat on the bar waiting to be delivered was disappointing. When they finally arrived to find ice added to the Rośe. When questioned about the ice I returned the drink. Then to watch the manager tell staff just to scoop out the ice and listen to the ice hitting the sink. Sorry but that is POOR management. The ice would have started melting and watering down the drink. Only at my request I demanded a new drink I finally got what I ordered. In future the manager should know better that we are the paying customer and we shouldn't have to pay for there mistakes esp being given water downed drinks. Also charging 40 pence for a splash of soda, ABSOLUTELY SCANDALOUS. Should be wearing a mask if your going to rob your customers like that. Like i said a splash, not half a pint. Truly look forward to your correspondence on this matter.

I haven't been to The Boat for years! Lovely, friendly staff, fab food with gluten free options. Yummy desserts! 😋 Options to sit inside, up or down or outside. Toilets aren't accessible with several steps up and down to them, which is a shame (but it is a very old building!).

A lovely pub with great staff. The service is fantastic and the outside space is very large, so lots of room for larger groups. The food during the day is a bit limited but very well prepared and presented. There is a large specials board for the evening but I have yet to try any of these. So overall, this is my favourite pub in Chepstow. Highly recommended.

I have visited the boat in on many occasions just for a quick pint and have found the staff some of the friendliest I have ever come across. I haven’t ate here yet but the food looks fantastic. Keep up the great work and well...

Overcooked roast beef & fatty pork & dry gammon, but with lovely vegetables & nut roast….. what a shame. Others seem to rave about it! Service was very good.

The food was good but not the usual very high standard, as the fish did not have the usual great flavour and the batter was very greasy. Also the service had dropped off as there were items not available but were not told until sometime...

Lovely location and great selection of drinks

The meal was surprisingly bad considering the reviews. We sat outside but the food was already cold when it turned up. My steak and ale pie looked like it had already been eaten and regurgitated and that would also explain the lack of taste. Pouring a jug of cold gravy over everything only ade things worse. Huge disappointment!

Lovely setting down by the river, the pub was very busy and the food took a while but it was worth waiting for. Good sized portions and all bread is door stops!

Spent a lovely couple of hours sitting outside in the sunshine 🌞 with a pint or two of local ale, and had some spicey chicken skewers - delicious. They had plenty of staff on hand so there was very little waiting, and a good queue system for the bar.

I visited The Boat Inn during a catch up with a friend from school. It was busy on a bank holiday weekend but we still found space to sit outside and admire the view at the side of the river.
