Kings Head in Monmouthshire

Late Mothers day meal. I couldn't go out yesterday due to working, so my son took me out tonight for a mother's day treat, along with my husband and mother in law, and it was a treat. From beginning to end, the service was excellent, the food superb, atmosphere lovely. The waitress:, Nothing too much trouble, even though myself and my son can be fussy, she put up with us with a smile, lovely young woman. Thank you for a lovely evening

Food was lovely at a reasonable price. Service was good and a nice atmosphere. Chips come separately on a big tray to take as many as you like.

Lovely cosy old pub perfect on a winter’s night when the fire is lit in the bar. Always a good atmosphere which is nice and an excellent choice of food with specials on the board as well as the regular menu. Good portions well cooked. Staff very friendly and efficient.

Popped in for a drink and then again the next night for a meal. Both time thoroughly enjoyed it. Lovely atmosphere and brilliant staff. Food was amazing. The curry was fantastic and the lamb chops awesome. Highly recommended. Note portions are big so don't stuff yourself before hand.

Fabulous atmosphere, a great old traditional pub. 1st time going there, food was outstanding. I had the steak and ale pie and it was by far the best one I have ever had, the flavour was beautiful and the amount of steak inside was plentiful. I will be going back very soon !

What a fabulous lamb Sunday lunch. I couldn't eat all the meat as there was so much. Ideal as well as open in the evening for food. Staff were lovely. Will definitely be back. Husband loved the gammon too. Loads of veg not in the photo, cauliflower cheese, carrots, cabbage and Brocolli. Thanks

Haven't visited for a while and so glad we came back today. The steak n ale pie was absolutely delicious, plenty of gravy and an abundance of beautifully cooked beef without a trace of fat.. My partner had the burger and what a burger!. Superbly cooked crisp chips.. Lovely friendly staff and Big Compliments to the chef. We definitely won't take so long to return next time. Highly recommend

Historical Almost Bohemian Ambience, Plentiful food, All served by friendly attentive staff. Definitely worth visiting again and again.

We wouldn’t eat here again. The ‘homemade’ lamb and mint pie had shop bought pastry (undercooked) and had so much mint sauce in the gravy that it was all I could taste and actually me catching the back of my throat. The frozen chips were part raw also. The staff were friendly

Eaten here several times and always a firm favourite when family and friends visit too. Food is always delicious and portions are very generous. Highly recommend the steak pie, lasagne, gammon and curry. Steve and his staff are always very friendly too.

Called to book, advised we would have a pram with us. Arrived and had to complete an obstacle course to get to the table which was situated next to stairs. Where was the already advised pram meant to go? Food arrived in a timely manner. Not bad, however the portions distract from the taste. I wasn't sure whether to eat it or climb it but unfortunately I forgot to bring my walking boots with me. Quantity over quality. The cherry on the cake was being refused the opportunity to change my son's nappy as the changing facilities are situated in the ladies toilets. I'm sure they would receive complaints should a baby be screaming in the restaurant from other diners but I was told by the manager that she wasn't comfortable with me entering the ladies toilets to change his nappy. I asked if they could check it was empty and guard the door to advise ladies that a man is changing his son's nappy which would take all of 2 minutes. I was told I had to get a woman to do it. Luckily my sister was with me who changed him. What if I didn't have a female with me? Was I meant to ask a random lady from the restaurant? Was further fobbed off by the manager after explaining the law in that changing facilities (If available, and in this case they are) must be accessible to all so my original suggestion of a member of staff standing and advising other diners would be fine. Was told the building is listed. What that has to do with a plastic shelf bolted to the wall I will never know. Waited 20 minutes for a handwritten bill. If I was you I wouldn't bother.

Myself, my partner and our Auntie had dinner here last Saturday (Dec 10th). Our pre-order had been misplaced, but the two lovely young ladies who looked after us couldn't have been more helpful. We were able to have what we wanted anyway, and the food was lovely. The food was all nicely handled, everything was cooked well. The generous portion of beef topside was still nicely pink, the gravy clear and glossy. The simple veg was all fresh and cooked perfectly. The pub itself, or at least, the main room, is a traditional old fashioned pub, with a huge roaring log fire, paraphernalia dotted around that feels like it's been there for decades (in a good way), with cosy atmospheric warm lighting. What stood out though were the staff: they were friendly and warm; and welcoming; and professional and attentive without being intrusive. We go out for birthdays a couple of times a year, and always try somewhere new. Not any more. This is our second visit, and we will be back next time. Thanks for a lovely evening. Merry Christmas. X

Tend to frequent the Kings Head every Sunday for drinks. I have a small dog and this place is dog friendly so it’s convenient. This Sunday we decided to eat Sunday lunch at around 4pm. We were told we couldn’t sit at the table with three chairs as it was reserved however we were told we could sit at the table in the corner suitable for four people, adjacent to another table for 2. We ordered our food/drinks which was quite enjoyable. We ordered more drinks and at 5pm the waitress approached our table for what I believed was to take an order for our dessert. How wrong could I have been…instead of asking if we wanted dessert we were told the table was required for a party of 6 and a child. We were not given a choice we were unceremoniously moved to a table in front of a roaring fire(reason no one wants to sit there.) When I explained we hadn’t ordered dessert yet we were told we could do so at the table we had been moved to. Never had this done to us before….outrageous! I know times are hard but forcing customers to play musical chairs to serve more customers, and asking us to move after one course is not acceptable. The waitress was very patronising and officious which didn’t help. Haven’t played musical chairs since I was a child and even then I didn’t have to pay for the privilege.

Had a fantastic Sunday Roast dinner, great taste and plenty of it, if you've not got a huge appetite don't have a starter, and you might be able to fit in a dessert . I can recommend the sticky toffee pudding. Staff were great and we sat near the open fire which was Definitely returning.

The food was lovely with masses of meat and a huge Yorkshire pud. Nice staff. Good atmosphere. Will visit again.

We visited Usk as we were staying nearby. We came across the King's Head and were so pleased that we did - we even came back a second time! The staff were very friendly and the portion sizes were huge. Food was piping hot. We didn't book either night but does gets busy so if you're a group it would be worth booking to avoid disappointment.

We visited restaurant for a family Birthday. Very disappointed, slow service, had to pester waitresses for drinks, to place order and for the bill. Unfortunately, Sunday roasts were poor as the beef and lamb were really tough and one roast dinner was sent back and...

Staying nearby as hadn't seen this one otherwise would have booked a room here. Good traditional pub, great selection of ales and lagers etc. I had the steak this evening which was cooked perfectly with huge portion of mash and trimmings. Excellent value for money...

We stayed in the Usk area for 4 nights and our meal at the King's Head was so good we paid a second visit. Food is excellent with good sized portions at very reasonable price. Particularly recommend the curry. Staff are very welcoming.

Nice cosy traditional pub, given a warm welcome by all the staff and enjoyed super nice, tasty, good value food - specifically a steak, onion and mushroom baguette and a ‘Marie Rose’ sauce prawn sandwich. Thanks to all for a pleasant lunch.

Visited for a meal and drinks last Saturday night, a few locals mulling around fire in the bar area, not many people in the restaurant, all customers in there were sat with there coats on it was that cold !, one table complained and tables...

On arival the pub was quite busy. Still has an Oldy worldy feel though mot the same but as before atmosphere wad v flat usually it has a vibrant feel. Chicken Curry half chips half rice. Curry had big chicken chunks and portions were good....

Tinned potatoes - I can't remember the last time I was served tinned potatoes in a pub or restaurant. Actually I can, it was in the 1970s. If the menu was cheap then you might overlook it but we've eaten Sunday lunches in a number...

A very warm and atmospheric old pub feel. Lots of nice decor inside and comfortable seats. A nice old pub smell of cooking and fireplace heating.Staff made us feel welcome straightaway and offered the standard menu as well as some specials on the black board.Gammon pineapple and egg was an excellent tasty choice from the standard menu. The Barman was very helpful in serving drinks and offering local advice

Excellent meal here. Went one evening with friends. Lovely environment and friendly staff. I had a steak , one of the best cooked I’ve had for ages. Really large portions and all cooked well. Definitely worth a visit but it gets busy so I’d say book ahead

We called in for a drink as friends were meeting centrally and was pleasantly pleased at the atmospheric bar area.The gent serving was friendly and served us quickly and attentively. At the back of the bar there seemed to be a restaurant area, the only place that had free seating but as we were not dining, we chose to prop up the bar.A lovely log fire was on but alas, could sit near it but can imagine whiling away a lovely Sunday afternoon in here.

If you like plastic meat and tinned potatoes smothered with tasteless gravy and done to death veg plus the single roast potato tasted old and very sad this is for you the prawns in the cocktail are tinned I am sure, all that we tasted was water and guess what, also smothered in sauce all this for £37 for two this is the place for you .No heating had to sit with my coat on as it was as cold outside as it was in this November .it might be ok for a drink and the staff are very welcoming but I cannot recommend the food .

Lovely place to stay. Rooms are spacious and very clean. The drinks are cheap food straightforward but again inexpensive. Staff are really hard-working and friendly. We thought we had lost a bracelet and the cleaner on the morning of the 13th was so helpful and friendly. She came all the way down from the top floor to help us leave a note. Will definitely return.

If I could give a zero rating for this place I would. Firstly, the best way to deal with customers who are rightly dissatisfied with their meal is to listen and apologise. However the staff at this pub have no sense of customer service abilities. The very old guy who believes himself to be a form of manager said he wouldn’t accept my feedback as he had eaten it himself the previous day. Furthermore, he charged for 2 separate meals which were both sent back due to them being bland, disgusting and containing uncooked scraps of chicken. Following our feedback, the manager stated that we should not return as they couldn’t accommodate us. If you wish to have an opinion and an enjoyable experience do not eat here, as you will be dismissed and verbally abused.

Regular visitor here, has to be the best value over a large radius, portions are generous, food quality is to a high standard and everyone is very obliging.

we attend regularly on Sunday evenings and have never been disappointed . the fish dishes are local and very good and the blackboard choices very good

Stayed here as we were going to a wedding nearby. Basic rooms in need of an upgrade but clean and tidy with excellent staff. Lovely breakfast in the morning. All in all, great value for money and can't praise the staff enough. We'd definitely stay here again.

Went a couple of weeks ago for a dinner. There was a veggie option of lasagne or something like that but I like to have a Sunday dinner with loads of veg if it’s on offer. The portions were huge to be fair and the meat eaters were all satisfied. For me however the veg was totally tasteless, not much good when that’s all that is on your plate. Other dishes may be ok here but don’t ask for a roast if you’re vegetarian. They gave us all a huge amount of boiled potatoes which seemed to go to waste as quite a few of us didn’t want them. They would have been better off giving everyone a couple more roasties. On the plus side, the staff are absolutely lovely.

A nice place to sit in the summer sunshine with the new patio area near the car park opposite the pub. Food lovely home cooked and tasty. Massive portions and reasonable too Doggy and wife friendly too.

We stopped of for lunch in Monmouth on our way to south Wales. Although there were several cafes and restaurants offering fish and chips, pasta and pizza, we fancied something different. Places serving Thai or Indian cuisine appear only to be open in the evenings and we had nearly given up on our search when we came across the Kings Head.

One of our favourite destinations, always feel welcome, the food is excellent, portions are generous, service is very good and all this at a very reasonable price. Has to be one of the most relaxed pubs/restaurants in the country.

Went here spontaneously as Usk is so pretty and a short drive from Cardiff.

We had heard good reports of the food and we we not disappointed! We ordered the fish & chips with mushy peas and the grilled cod with tomatoes and peppers. The portions were huge and were beautifully cooked and well presented. My fault, as I assumed the tomatoes and peppers would be a sauce and they were just grilled (never assume!), but a sauce would have been nice. We could not fault the food or the service and look forward to our next visit. Good value for money.

We returned here for lunch today and had the same as we had before as was so tasty! We had Steak baguette and prawn baguette. Pub was busy as Good Friday, but didn’t have to wait,nice atmosphere sun shining through the open door

3 generations of family went here for Sunday lunch. As always those of us who had the traditional Sunday lunch were not disappointed. That, however, could not be said for the vegetarian option. One of our family had the stilton and vegetable crumble which came with boiled potatoes and seasonal veg. Well as meals go it was like comparing David and Goliath. Considering the size of our Sunday roast, i thought this was very disappointing. The crumble itself was, in my view, more than a little on the small size. There wee 3 small boiled potatoes with it and what looked like a garnish of salad. I was not impressed and it wasn't even my food. That being said, apparently it tasted really good. Just a shame about the portion size, especially given the size of the Sunday roast. Good job I'm not a vegetarian! On a plus, as always the staff and service were great and i don't doubt that had the person asked for more potatoes they would have been given them but the crumble is the main dish and it quite simply not enough no matter how delicious.

Stoppe wed at this Pub/ Hotel on out way to a Birthday. Food was great and lots of it Staff were really great and so friendly This is going on my must stop at list I highly recommend this as a place to eat

This time we visited to celebrate an 80 th birthday. Sunday lunch was se ond to none with copious amounts of meat and veg. We also tried a sele ction of starters and desserts. Everything was great. Service was with a smile and nothing was too much trouble. Jamie and the young dark haired waitress particularly deserved a mention. Thank you all.

Looking forward to a really good lunch at this lovely pub - how wrong could you be! It was almost inedible.Swimming in gravy the "roast pork" could have been anything- awful processed meat on all our plates whether it was lamb or beef.Regret not complaining at the time but when with friends you do not want to make a fuss.I am not a complainer but feel serving this food was totally unacceptable.

Visited this place on a recommendation of s friend and truly glad we did welcome was warm, food was great and service very good. Great experience will return again before Xmas

Visited for lunch, old fashioned pub which l love, but unfortunately food left a lot to be desired. Had steak and ale pie and the potion large with lots of meat, unfortunately meat was so tough and chewy put most of it in my bag to give to my dogs. My partner had chicken curry which again was large, but was thin runny sauce with all you could taste was hot curry powder.

Bit hit and miss. No real style or eloquence however it doesn’t profess any.

For a Monday night it was very busy which is always a good sign. There was a hearty menu and the specials looked good. I had lasagne and my friend had the lamb chops. We both polished off our generous portions but I had to admit the lamb looked lovely. If we are hear again we will definitely come back.

Decided to go out for some food with misses. Great pub with old worldy charm. Pub is over 400 years old and still going strong on a busy Sunday evening we booked a table when we arrived we were shown our seats and we're given menu's, drinks orders were taken and arrived promptly.

We stayed here overnight on our way home from Snowdonia. We had a very nice room, obviously recently redecorated. We ate in the bar in the evening which was vibrant and had a good atmosphere. All the staff were great. There was a good menu choice and the food was very good - there was just so much of it!! As I hate to waste food I just wondered what happens to all the left-overs, we could only eat half of the food on our plate and I noticed other diners had left food too. The portion sizes are easily enough for two. The prices are so reasonable I think they could keep the prices the same but serve less food. It would be better for their profit margins and my conscience! Breakfast was good too. Would definitely recommend

We havn't been to the Kings Head for a while but decided to go there for a late Saturday lunch. They do their full menu which is useful to know. I had the roast Duck which was excellent, my wife had the fish cake which was also very good. The portions are generous and the quality of cooking good. Very friendly staff. Enjoyed an excellent pint of Butty Bach and my wife enjoyed the house wine. Glad to see the Kings Head is keeping their standards. Good prices.

This is a true pub experience with ambiance all around!! The service was good and the food excellent. I recommend the fish and chips and a beer!!!!

If you’re hungry, the kings head is definitely the place to go in Usk. Good service every time and a nice selection of specials as well as an extensive normal menu. Would recommend to anyone but be warned the portions are huuuuuge.

Both myself and my husband had the gammon on this visit. We were extremely satisfied with the food and service, we dine here on a regular basis and as usual the standard was excellent.

Have been a few times in the last 3-4 weeks, can't fault the food service or this pub. Staff lovely and the meals are huge best meat I have tasted in quite a while keep up the good work and see you again soon

We have been here twice the first time was for Sunday lunch which was excellent but you must book because it gets full The second time was for lunch which was also really good and great value for money with huge portions

We arrived without booking and asked for a table for 2. It was early afternoon so was quite quiet. We didn't have to wait very long for our food and it was delicious. This was our second spontaneous visit and we will definitely be back. Interesting old building with some curious artefacts. Staff are very friendly and polite.

Visited the Kings Head last night with good friends. The food, once again, was wonderful - tasty, fresh and very good value. The staff are really friendly and the décor full of olde world charm. Can't beat it!

Visited on a busy Friday evening managed to book that afternoon but book in advance as it was packed. Told the barmaid we had booked a table but we had to ask someone else after that as she didn't tell us where to sit. The man who served us our food was very attentive & asked throughout if we needed anything else or another drink and if food was ok. We ordered starters which were good but quite filling so struggled to eat all main. The food was excellent we had lamp chops & the duck special both excellent both cooked to perfection and lots of flavour we ordered gravy boat and had a mass of veg & chips. Prices for drinks £8+ for a pint of San Miguel & a large Pinot wine. Food cost £46 for for 2 x starters, two mains extra gravy & two pints lager. Great old pub with a good atmosphere, excellent food.

Went to pub with no reservation booked and they managed to fit us in on a fairly busy Monday. Food good quality and very large portions

The food is really great best I had for along time the service is excellent and the staff are fantastic in all a grate place to stay
