Until COVID we regularly used Waitrose in Abergavenny as a morning stop off before we went hiking in the Beacons. We would have a coffee and a bun and buy a sandwich for the day's walk. Sometimes we would do this twice a week. Then along came COVID and we - like everyone else stopped driving any distance. Several years on and COVID still gets the blame for a significant number of society's ills: but under no circumstances could one blame COVID for the abysmal muck-up that has been made of the Waitrose Café in Abergavenny. It's dreadful: cold, uninspiring, uninviting, and definitely lacking the human touch - awful. One is confronted with a bank of large iPads from which to try to work out what you might like to eat/drink. Once that exercise if over (assuming that you last the course) then, having guessed what bun you might like to eat, what you hope you have ordered is delivered to your table. It's difficult to know what to say - but we watched three couples leave as soon as they walked in. It's been the topic of unfavourable discussion at several gatherings and that is probably as good a heading for this review as any - unfavourable. Another place not to return to. Even for a utilitarian café (which this is) one does expect some attempt to offer a reasonable experience to the clientele. SAD. Oh and who is cleaning the iPad screens in this day of viruses galore. We - with a certain degree of amusement - watched one gentleman who was rubbing his nose with his hand whilst jabbing at the screen with the same fingers. YUK. Post script - I decided not to add the photos as they would identify customers.

Love the Abergavenny store. Give a 4 today as disappointed to find that in the cafe we have to order from a machine. Struggled to order two drinks but I ended going into the store to buy a sandwich. Whilst there witnessed one couple walk out and staff having to guide people through the process. They had to walk about delivering drinks that could have been taken by customers. Told that thus is a trial. As far as I am concerned if it remains my friend and I will not go for our coffee and snack/meal. Real people and food are far more appealing.

Went in to the cafe. It was great the last time we passed this way. Now you can't order at the counter, you can only order through terminals. We couldn't find any of the things we picked from the menu on the terminal. People at the other terminals were the same. Staff member tried to help and was very apologetic, but in the end we gave up and went to McDonald's. We'll do our supermarket shop later, somewhere else. The terminal ordering system seems designed to discourage customers.

For many years I have been doing a regular weekly shop at Waitrose in Abergavenny and invariably combine it with breakfast in their restaurant. Today I found the restaurant has been transformed into a fast-food outlet very similar to a Macdonalds with no food on display and minimal contact with their excellent staff. There is no longer any choice on the menu; i.e. as a Celiac sufferer I normally select individual breakfast items but I can no longer do that and only have the option of choosing a full breakfast at twice the price and with the risk of gluten cross-contamination. Also as I look around the busy restaurant nearly every customer is over 50. I talked to some of them today and they are outraged by what Waitrose have done to this previously friendly venue with its personalised service. What on earth is the thinking behind this change? Myself and others have complained to the extremely embarrassed staff, and I've made it clear that, if it stays like this, I will not only stop frequenting the restaurant but will also stop doing my main shop at the store. I thought Waitrose was above this kind of cost-cutting, race-to-the-bottom mentality.

The fruit and veg are always nice and fresh. The staff are always friendly and helpful. I don't find it that much more expensive. I prefer the full fat Yoghurt and kefire to that of Aldi. There's a good variety of frozen fruit and veg. Two frozen lamb shanks £11. Decent mint Tea bags. Nice fresh chunky ginger (Aldi is in plastic and a bit shrivelled) The 1st Abergavenny Scouts were packing last week, what a lovely troop of young people they were. Polite, chatty and wholesome. Oh the fruit and nut bloomer is lush, a slice of that with French butter with salt crystals is lovely. I hate all the new self service tills. I promise to never use them! I usually manage to present a Morrisons card (I've put it on my phone) They're similar to me, I always get in a knot and cause a queue at checkout when I fiddle with my online wallet, again the staff are lovely. Oh, wild Alaskan Salmon, it's better taste wise than the farmed stuff that is dyed to make it salmon coloured. It costs a bit more but the texture and taste is lovely.🙂

For a major concern who are more than happy to take my syndicate's £40 per week lottery spend and earn the commission on the transaction, they are unwilling to pay out a £255 win and two £87 wins on the same tickets I bought from their shop. Stores such as this one can pay out up to £500 per transaction. In order to advise them that I would be collecting (the polite thing to do, not just spring it on them), on telephoning the store to request in advance that they have enough cash in place to be able to pay me my winnings (way within the limit for a store payout), I was advised that I could do it online (which is not the case) and there was no way they would have enough cash to pay it! So basically, a large concern like Waitrose are extremely happy to take your money and earn commission on your ticket purchase but too incompetent or just lazy to pay you when you win. Abergavenny Waitrose - YOU ARE A DISGRACE

Café _ really awful experience at Abergavenny today. After ordering and paying, the young girl closed the till without giving me my change. She asked for assistance and the two of them then dithered, trying to add up my order on paper and a calculator, without success. A third person appeared and they said that I hadn't paid for jam and cream for scone, to which I replied I think I deserve it for free, by now. There were now 4 customers behind me, all waiting to be served. In the end, they said I owed them 15 pence! to which I said I wouldn't pay. I returned to my table with my purchases_ flat white, americano and a scone. I took one sip of coffee, it was like dirty dishwater, weak and not even luke warm. I returned to counter and was given another, which was warmer but still very weak. I did accept a free cinnamon swirl for my very bad experience. I won't be venturing to the café again.

Waitrose always strikes as a cut above average! The entrance is decorated and welcoming. The isle signage is accurate to save you walking every isle twice! Once to find something and again when you realise that’s the only selection! Veg, meat, fish are very greasy looking and tidy . The isle were not cluttered with their trollies but customers always will stop for a chat blocking everything up. Price wise it may be on the high but then you’ve got a wider range available. Staff were helpful polite and cheerful! Yes as one who hates shopping, not a bad experience!!

The employee at the till was having a chat with the woman in front of me who had about 25 items.. took her over 5 minutes to checkout. I had to stand there and listen to them blathering on and on and on… then I wanted to purchase an item from outside and the employee acted like they have no way to look up the product on the till. Then I stopped at the customer service desk to ask to buy it also, again they wanted me to go out and get it and bring it in. It’s 2024. You can look up items on the system and shouldn’t be forcing customers to carry large heavy items in and out of the store when they are outside already. Really outdated form of service. Get with the times.

The store in general as lovely, however for a brand that considers itself premium, there are just a few areas that don't sit well with the status. The toilets are consistently absolutely disgusting. There is no excuse for this at all. They are filthy, poorly serviced and foul smelling. The food in the cafe is great, however the tables are always stacked up with dirty plates and very often we've had to clear and clean a table before sitting to eat. This is a problem at many Waitrose cafés, not only Abergavenny. As mentioned, otherwise delightful.

Lovely location, spoilt by the bar man and the wine…. I ordered a Pinot Grigio and when my husband brought it outside to me I questioned the colour of it (it was dark yellow)… tasted it and it was awful. So I took it back to the bar, to be confronted by a barman who said there was nothing wrong with the wine and it just wasn’t to my taste. No… this wine is awful, and not a Pinot Grigio. He showed me the bottle and said that nobody else that day had a problem with the wine so it’s just me. I asked for an alternative, so ordered a Sauvignon Blanc… which he poured and then tried to charge me £8.20. No, I am not paying for this, the first wine was not fit for consumption… again he said it’s my taste that’s the problem. I asked to speak to the manager, to which he just pointed to himself. I then asked for a refund on the Pinot. He then agreed to do this, and so popped a refund on his card machine. (I am yet to receive the refund but acknowledge that it can take a day or two)…. And then I paid for the new wine… This would of all been a lot easier if he had just exchanged the wine rather than go through the farce of me asking for a refund and then repaying for the new wine… The toilets were a disgrace, the hot tap doesn’t work, and the toilet barely flushes… Such a shame as the pub is in a lovely location.

Came to Abergavenny for a wander and something to eat, couldn’t decide on where to dine as we walked through the town, my wife didn’t want us to pay some of the prices of the lovely looking restaurants as we passed. So fish and chips it was and what a treat it was! Beautiful batter, perfect chips and super efficient service. Only 3 stars for atmosphere, which is a little unfair, they aren’t seeking to provide that experience. This was an every bit as good as award winning fish and chips we had recently in Anstruther Scotland. Thanks, we will be back!
