Recently refurbished and Rebranded as "Fire & Fork" promising a " a traditional American barbecue experience". No Bread available before Starters. - Pork Burnt Ends - Mixture of under and over cooked chunks of pork in a sickly sweet, slightly spicy smoked sauce. Need something acidic to cut through all the fat came with "Texas "Toast", Stale slice of bloomer spread with an unidentifiable substance. Beef Cigars - Lovely shredded beef in a crispy pancake style roll with a rich, smoked Garlic Mayo. Mains - XL Short Ribs not available so both ordered the 10 Hour Smoked Brisket. Served as described on menu. No discernable smoked crust or flavour to the Brisket. No mustard available at this restaurant. No Napkins provided, asked twice, got some from another table. we dealt with our cutlery shortage similarly. No water provided when requested. Inexperience of the staff evident but more than made up for by their enthusiasm and wish to please. Two Starters, Two Mains, Three pints and a Short / Mixer - £92. Option to add tip to card payment. Cash tip direct to server. This place has lots of potential but needs to overcome teething problems before one will consider a return

Following the wedding of my niece the previous day, the Cantref hosted a private function for us and as we were a large party, they gave us exclusive use of the restaurant and their large, beautiful beer garden at the rear of the pub. They provide us with an excellent buffet with a whole salmon centrepiece. It was beautifully laid out and they even provided special individual platters for the vegans amongst us. The care and attention we received from Lynette and Tom, who run the pub, was outstanding. The food was superb, thanks to Marc the chef. We will obviously be back!

Received a wonderful welcome when we called in today for lunch. Staff were so friendly and helpful. I am partly immobile so the chef offered to carry the drinks outside. The toasted Ciabatta sandwiches were lovely, the Bwtty Bach beer was great. Chatted with some locals. Thoroughly enjoyable.

We visited this pub about 2 years ago. The lady was very rude and obviously thought she was above us, so we stayed away. However on a ride out the other evening we popped in for a drink…….. NOT A WISE MOVE. The 1 star hygiene rating didn’t put Us off (it probably would a lot of people). We had a drink and just felt very awkward as the owner (I assume) was very stand offish, on leaving we were asked by a man we’re one of the glasses was that we had our drink out of??? Did he think we had it in our bag?? We told him that the lady had collected the glass from us. To which he nodded and we quickly left feeling rather stupid?! Will not be returning. Very tired and run down, could definitely do with some new benches out the front and maybe some new staff??

Wow! Absolutely amazing food had here today. There's a reduced menu but I was still struggling to decide what to have as it all sounded delicious. I went with the tempura prawns starter followed by the brisket main, and as much as I wanted dessert, the portions are so good I had no room. I finished with coffee, served in a cafetière and in the most exquisite cup and saucer set. The whole place is so tastefully decorated and it's warm and inviting. The landlady was lovely, nothing was too much trouble and the service from her was top notch. This is a local business I will most definitely be visiting again.

Thankyou Lynette for your ever friendly hospitality, the lovely lady who served us was friendly and warm but sorry I did not get your name, the setting is quaint and well looked after. The food was stunning and Mark, the chef should be proud, my husband, Gwyn and I both started with salt and pepper squid it was delicious even the salad was that little bit more, not your standard lettuce leaf and tomato, it was tasty and refreshing. Main course for me was duck this was cooked pink with a delicious jus all in all really good quality tasty meal. My husband had steak with a peppercorn sauce, I had a sneaky taste, as you do and found this very tasty too. Then there was dessert I had cinnamon plums with ice cream, this came on pancakes, which I didn't expect but it finished off the meal perfectly not heavy just very tasty, my husband who never has dessert tried white chocolate pannacotta with fruit he said it was delicious and very light. All in all a worthwhile dining experience. I would recommend it to all.

Husband and I went here for the first time in September. We had booked ahead as it is often full and we told them my husband is dairy free. The atmosphere is nice and the food was good. We reminded the lady serving - the owner- about the dairy free requirement and she identified which items were suitable. Unfortunately, my husband was ill later that evening and the following few days- it is a serious allergy. Something had gone wrong and I rang them - not to complain but I thought they should know. When I spoke to the lady owner she was hostile, not concerned, referred to my husband as my son and dismissed me by saying it must have been something I had given him. That is unlikely since we have been together several years and I know how to cater for him. No sympathy, no offer of a bottle of wine or similar, just rudeness. Cannot recommend, especially if you have any allergies.

I hired an area of the Cantreff to have some leaving drinks and nibbles before moving away, it was a truly fabulous farewell. The Cantreff is always so immaculately presented, fresh flowers adorn the bar and the candles give a lovely warm glow to the room. Lynette and her staff are so warm and always make you feel welcome when you arrive. The selection of drinks means there is something for everybody even the non drinkers which my Mother and sister are. If you are a drinker like myself the wine they have on offer is always excellent and well chilled. We ordered a buffet for the event and it was delicious, there was a great selection ranging from tender fried chicken to beetroot hummus and carrot sticks, celery sticks, rice etc. There were around 50 people in attendance, there was plenty of food for everybody and something for everyone to enjoy. The food was served with proper cutlery and plates which made it feel that extra bit special. The attention to detail at the Cantreff really is the icing on the cake. Y Cantreff is a hidden delight. Visited on a wet Friday night on a short break in the area and were bowled over by the delicious home cooked food. Lovely curried parsnip soup with fresh warm sourdough loaves followed by a tasty lamb cawl and fish & chips with some of the best chips we've eaten this year. Puddings also great though we only had room for one between us! A very warm welcome from Lynette and her two well behaved spaniels just added to the feeling of being home from home. Inn split between pub and restaurant sections, the latter being a lovely room with character. Alex is an excellent chef and all the staff were attentive and helpful - the only shame is that there weren't more guests to enjoy (possibly due to the awful weather). Will definitely visit again when next in Abergavenny.

The welcome has always been friendly in the bar and this was matched in the restaurant. The menu was varied and a change from the usual pub fare. The service was prompt and attentive, the two courses we each had were of an extremely high standard in both taste and presentation. The monk fish and pork belly were delicious, perfectly cooked with very generous portions. My friend and I are from the area and thought we'd Roy the Cantreff for a change...first thing we obviously noticed was price, very expensive for a Sunday lunch...but...as long as it's good that's all that matters hey?..we were the first ones in there but food took 25 minutes to arrive. The waitress had mentioned the beef would be pink, fine we thought. Finally we receive our Sunday lunch....plated up! Quite sad...next..the pink beef..not pink but red raw with sinew and gristle through it.it looked like frozen scraps of beef that they'd defrosted and cooked, certainly not carved off a joint...couldn't cut it and certainly couldn't chew it..I don't normally complain but had to.she took it away then.there was then a debate about the meat saying the chef could pull it apart so I should be able to cut it and eat it?? Then more delay discussing that I'd have to wait if I wanted a new dinner plated up. Although there was only one other table occupied at this time. I said no just put some decent meat on my plate that I could chew. 15 mins later.. a new dinner minus the red cabbage..the waitress came over and said everything ok I said yes except you forgot the red cabbage. She huffed, went off and brought some to the table in a tiny bowl. No apology yet again. Both our dinners were spoilt. The manager if that's her title was disgustingly rude. We paid..no apology at all...She and her staff need to go on a course and learn all about customer service. I've eaten in some places over the years but this tops it all for rubbish customer service and bad quality food. Never again!!

My wife, daughter, and I were recommended to eat at the Cantreff by a friendly local while we were visiting the town, and what a great tip that was. The proprietress Lynette made us very welcome, and even introduced our 8 year-old daughter to her dogs in the garden at the back. We also enjoyed some nice drinks (Wye Valley ale and Birra Morretti). And the ambience of the building is quite charming. But the most special part of the experience is the food at this place. The new chef Alex is extremely talented and has a genuine passion for his art. You're in for a sublime experience if you eat here. Don't expect a large array of choices (good restaurants can't prepare more than a handful of dishes from fresh ingredients), but the choice is diverse and really appetizing. We ordered the Welsh lamb, chicken tika, and the fish and chips, all of which were outstanding. This is definitely the place to go for dinner or lunch if you're passing through the lovely town of Abergavenny.

A wonderful welcome as always. Particularly lovely to enjoy a drink and a chat with you, Lynette. See you both tomorrow for more of the sane, and for your themed night on 15 September. Looking forward to it.First class customer service as always.

Sub-standard food and service even worse. Staff were rude and food was served cold. Will not be returning.

The lady who runs this place is extremely nasty, rude and completely unreasonable. The food was cold, service terrible and I advise people never to come here. Not worth the hassle and the rude service!!

Had lunch today in Y Cantreff - great food, excellent service , lovely restaurant, good value for money - people on next table to us came from the Midlands, they thought it was a worthwhile visit too - can certainly recommend, and we will be visiting again soon.

Reading reviews of this place on trip advisor its clear to see the poor and terrible reviews are pre the recent changes in management. There is absolutely no way that could be same place as we visited today. With absolutely stunning decor Y Cantreff Inn has been renovated with impeccable taste creating the perfect atmosphere to dine or drink in. We found this absolute gem whilst on route back home from Llandovery as we drove through Abergavenny to stop for Sunday lunch. And what a find this was. Without a shadow of a doubt THE BEST Sunday lunch we have EVER had at a restaurant/pub. With a beautiful cut of beef, crunchy vegetables, homemade cauliflower cheese and homemade Yorkshire puddings all topped off with beef gravy which had clearly been made in the beef tin as it had the most wonderful taste. All credit to the fantastic chef and thank you to the wonderful hosting by the new owners. We shall DEFINATLY be going again very soon. I cannot speak highly enough of this place!!! 5 stars!!!!! Also bonus points as its DOG FRIENDLY so we cant wait to visit soon with out pup

On the forth of August I went along to the Cantreff to a themed food evening of food with friends This time it was Mexican, we had a fantastic time and the food was superb it consisted of a number of courses including fish Tacos with a mango / lime salsa which was gorgeous, all was served at the table by very attentive staff the other courses were equally tasty chilli with beef which was so tender it melted in your mouth There were at least forty people who had pre booked this evening For £15 a head this was great value at every level and the meal was finished with a lovely glass of tequila I would recommend this regular meal option , phone Lynette and find out when the next theme night is you won't be disappointed this is my third

What a revelation!! We have visited the Cantreff in the past only to experience poor quality food in less than pleasant surroundings. We have visited twice since Tom & Lynette have taken over and what a turn-around!!The entire pub has been tastefully re-decorated to create a lovely cosy atmosphere. The decor is crisp and clean with a country chic feel - very tastefully done. The beer garden at the rear is lovely and is looking so much nicer under the new management. On both occasions the food has been fantastic. The second of our visits was for a Mexican themed evening. Two courses for £15 - excellent value food.We have no hesitation in recommending The Cantreff (Y Cantreff) for top quality food and a lovely atmosphere. Wishing Tom & Lynette the success they deserve for all their hard work.

We visited Y Cantreff back in February, since when they have been without a chef. I have to say "well done" to Lynette and Tom for holding out for the right person to fill this position even though that probably means that they have lost money during the interim period. They now have a chef and are, at present, serving meals at lunchtime only. The have a good but simple menu with something for everybody. The light bites" section is particularly suited to the warmer weather which we are experiencing at present. The food was presented to a high standard (I asked for two poached eggs on top of my Welsh Rarebit, and was thrilled that they were served exactly as thy should be). The ambience, as always, was just right and the service excellent. We have made a booking for the weekend of the Food Festival, but doubtless will return long before then.

We hoped to eat dinner here, but their kitchen doesnt serve on Mondays. (thats not unusual for this area, so if youre from out of town, phone to check). However we stayed for drinks and chatted to the landlady who very kindly booked us a reservation for dinner elsewhere. The whole place has recently been refurbished to a high standard and additional work in the beer garden is ongoing. we enjoyed drinking here and look forward to eating there another day.

I have been here quite a few times now since Lynette and Tom took over. On each visit I have found the food to be superb and the service professional and friendly. They even catering for my vegan brother on one occasion, making him a salad he said was the best he'd ever tasted! Lynette and Tome have totally transformed the Cantref into something quite beautiful. I have a feeling that it won't be long before we have to book well in advance to get a table.

We visited again on 18 February 2017 for Valentine's Day. Lynette and Tom have created something very special here. A fabulous dining room space, clearly furnished and thought out with love and attention to detail. A good menu too; my husband had mussels to begin, we both had steak, and the Banoffee Mess for dessert is absolutely delicious! For once I finished all three courses. Well done both; we will be eating with you again on March 26 (Mothering Sunday) and hopefully many, many more times after this.

Members of our party had travelled from Schull, Hampshire and Kent to have Sunday lunch in this small pub/restaurant. Some parking available outside or in adjoining street. Small bar to left of entrance and slightly larger restaurant to the right. Cosy friendly low ceiling room with some nice pieces of furniture. Staff where very friendly and brought us drinks while we waited for late comers and studied the menu. Short menu with a handful of starters, then Roasts and a few other main choices. Most of our party had the roast beef while others had baked salmon on chive mash with mussels and mixed Fishcake with poached duck egg on bed of French beans and samphire in a cream & wine sauce. Only negative was that roast beef was pink although not bloody and only two small dishes of vegetables were served between four people. It would have been good if menu had stated rare beef. Also bed of French beans only contained about four pieces. Prices were reasonable however and the owner allowed us to divide the bill between our various party's. NB The noise level can be quiet high due to the low ceiling.

Just enjoyed a great evening out in the Cantreff's restaurant - we know we always have a very warm welcome from the new owners Lynette and Tom when we visit the bar - great choice of beer always available - but this was the first time we had a meal in the revamped restaurant- we were impressed, food was great and service to match - we will do this again. It's great to see this pub have a new and improved lease of life under Lynette and Toms guidance - well done that team!

A table of four enjoyed a lovely, lively atmosphere in this pub last night. Lynette and Tom have made this pub so different from the previous incarnation that you feel somewhere completely different. The menu was delightful- I could have chosen so many items but honed in on mussels to start and a super fish cake for mains. Had room for a pud too! We'll certainly return soon.

The Cantreff is under new ownership/management. We wanted somewhere to go for our tennis group Christmas meal so went to inspect and were not disappointed. It has been completely refurbished; great decoration, lighting and furnishings. The Staff were delightful, the food delicious and reasonably priced and we enjoyed a thoroughly good evening. I had been there the night previously with the choir in which I sing, about thirty of us and they were all surprised at how nice it had now become and again, a very enjoyable evening during which we all sang and the atmosphere was very jolly.

My partner and I came here to check out the Detroit pizza and cocktails. The service was fast and super friendly, plus they catered for my nut allergy really well. Being dog friendly, we took out 12 yo labrador Alffi who had fun, plus and Utterly Mutterly ice-cream! We had the 1/2 and 1/2 Detroit pizza, a mix of Bloody Mary and the porcini mushrooms. It was DELISH, the portion was also massive meaning we took half home for tea, making it 2 meals in 1. My partner had the Detroit IPA which was hoppy and fresh. I had the Shepherd and Welsh Wanderer cocktails. Very strong, delicious and well presented. We have friends that live locally and will absolutely be back to check out the Sunday slices, bring our dogs and have some more pizza and cocktails. Thanks Lee & co for fab hospitality.

I was shocked that there were no disabled parking spaces and I had to drop my elderly disabled mother at the front entrance then drive a fair distance to the tennis courts car park to park my car. I am also disabled and have to use a walking mobility aid which was quite difficult as I had to walk on the main road to the venue to get back. There was no dropped kerb to allow me to use the very narrow inadequate footpath. Very very disappointed at the lack of disabled parking for such a large and well used venue.
