Town Gate Take Away in Monmouthshire

There are some dishes which are very tasty, such as sweet and sour and peking. But I have found others such as yellow and the black bean to be a bit blander than I have tried elsewhere. Don't know if somehow they get watered down during the cooking process? Which is a shame as I end up ordering the same thing all the time when I go back!

Couldn’t give no stars ; now being violently sick AVOID AVOID .. called and said they would give 15 pounds back of next order ; no thank you very much Food was absolutely appalling waited over an hour for it too come, egg fry rice was stuck in a brick and, tastes like boiled plain rice the chicken balls was pink but at the same time so chewy and the batter wasn’t cooked so doughy, fowl! the chips was soaking wet limp and pale.. salt and pepper chicken had really weird taste over all disgusting spent over 30 pounds and it’s all just gone straight in the bin.. nothing was eaten I’m not normally one too complain but this was so so bad as I’m pregnant I was not even trying too just eat it.. no chance will never order from here again.. edit 1 day later; Partner had the ribs thinking only thing that tasted fine.. he’s now violently being sick, clearly food poisoning soooo glad I trusted my gut and didn’t eat it.🤢😮‍💨😩

Ordered for the first time after moving to the area. Always sceptical ordering from new places and new areas but this is the best Chinese we have ever had. Polite on the phone lovely delivery driver and the food was lovely. Best Chinese we have ever had will definitely order again. Will be our go to takeaway in future.

A hidden gem!! Spent ages searching for vegan food around this area whilst on holiday. I eventually gave up and settled for a Chinese takeaway. Much to my surprise, when I opened the website to order online there was all my fave Chinese dishes with vegan chicken and vegan duck options!!! I don't know how this has been kept quiet, but this is THE best Chinese takeaway ever! Beyond surprised at the inclusive options. 10/10 proper Chinese takeaway food, good prices, big portions and lovely staff. Thanks :) would love to see vegan chicken balls on the menu too in the future!

Rubbish not a decent chinese in abergavenny

Placed order at 5 to 6 come 7:35 still no sign. Rang, the lovely lad at the counter rang delivery driver and asked how long it would be. She said ten minutes. Twenty minutes later still bo sign so rang back. She said she was on my street but wasn't. Another five minutes or so passes taking us way beyond two hours since order was placed she rolls up and parks up the street. Claims a road closure in abergavenny caused her to be over an hour late.. I happen to drive for a living its very rare rare even in the busiest cities for a road closure to cause that level of lateness in the busiest times of day let alone an evening in a small town and Google maps showing zero road closures locally. Still had to pay for the food despite it being soggy cold and inedible by the time it arrived. Fair to say won't order from here again.

Have used this takeaway for many years and has always been ok However a recent visit should have set alarm bells ringing Front area of takeaway was scruffy and dirty more so than usuual Food ready on time When got home there was a large spring or pancake roll which we hadn't orxered OK thought this was a freebie as order vale was high Rest of food was ok I took about a quarter of the spring roll, taste was off Unfortunetly swallowed my nouthful When we looked at spring roll and cut it open the smell was awful like damp wet musty straw Though oh hek here we go The next night into the morning Stomach cramps and vomitting Followed later in the day by the other end I was the only one who ate it and the only one ill Will never use this takeaway again after many years of being a satisfied customer

I wish I didn't have to write this review, but this is the second time I've received awful service and food. I ordered a delivery of which I was told would be one hour. After one hour and 15 minutes I called to be told my order would be with me soon. It arrive d 35 minutes after the hour and the food was awful. Unfortunately I will never order from Town Gate again.

I enjoyed the food here, good portion sizes and I liked their round dishes. It was a good start, something different. Cash only available just up the street. Lots of parking nearby.

Really shocking this is the second time iv ordered from here and both times the rice has been really hard, the chips seemed like they have been cooked from frozen and left overnight on heat and both the bbq and peking sauce was really sweet. Would not be eating from here again

Horrible food I wouldn't recommend eating here. Rude and they dump the chips with salt.

This the second time now we have had cold food and have had to reheat it. The first time was home delivery and they had trouble finding my address so I expected it to a certain extent. The second time they were really busy and could give a time on delivery so I went to get it , it was cold to the point the curry had started to solidify. I won't be going again.

Swift service, good portion sizes, would prefer a less sloppy chow mein, but I am aware all Chinese take aways are different. Would recommend this one though.

Had a meal from here on Friday. Within hours I was in agony and have spent 12 hours vomiting and having severe diarheor, headache and body aches. Classic food poisoning. Never again!!

Wife and myself ordered a 98A (CHEF SPECIAL FRIEDRICE) Both of us have been ill most of the night with sickness and the runs. The meat in the dish looked as though it was all scraps. NEVER AGAIN THANKS

Shame you cant write a half star. the people at the counter was very rude and they told me to leave even tho i paid for the food.

Had a takeaway this evening and wish we hadn't bothered. I had Singapore Chow Mein which was so bland I just couldn't eat it. Just a few bites. My wife had a curry which was so sweet she could have been eating a bowl of sugar. Curry not eaten, Chow Mein not eaten. Total waste of money. Gone in the bin and going to have a packet of crisps! 😡

Ordered 2 box meals with chicken balls, really poor. Come out the bags like 2 frozen meals. The meals tasted like nothing and like they had been stored for 2-3 days prior. Didn’t even come warm Nevermind freshly cooked, microwaved rubbish by the sounds. So disappointed.

Excellent!! More or less faultless.. Tasted really lovely and fresh, with lots of individual flavours. Ordered online using a really easy system. Collected with no wait even though they were extremely busy. 10 out of 10!

Was my favourite but had it on new years eve and was very poor quality, prawn/shrimp shells in multiple dishes and food was cold. Just because it's busy you can't let your quality slip very disappointing 😕

Food took over an hour to come delivery, they told me 40 minutes and with a hungry 4 year old after a six hour car journey that wasn't good. Ordered at 17.05 and food finally turned up at 18.15.. The child's precious chips were soft, soggy and under cooked as were the spring rolls. Chow mein was literally swimming in grease/oil though it was hot so small blessing there I suppose, so much onion and bean sprout used as a filler.. Not sure I would go again and not taking card payment is a pain in this day and age. It was adequate after a long day but I've had nicer, fresher food.

We was staying in a town over for a little getaway and fancied a Chinese. After being unable to find one we found this gem! We got so much delicious food at such a reasonable price. The staff was so lovely. I’m assuming it’s a family run business and the young men who help their father run it was so polite and helpful. Highly recommend

Good food here but on 2 occasions our takeaway order has been wrong. Peppered Beef turned up as Black bean beef and Chicken chow mein turned up as chicken with vegetables. On both occasions a young chap took the order but of course the error may of happened in the kitchen. Silly mistakes but equally disappointing when you are entertaining guests.

Tasty Chinese, well cooked and big portions. Would recommend the mixed starters box, sweet & sour Hong Kong style and the salt & pepper chicken. Wasn’t a fan of the chips.

Spoke to a very rude lady on the phone. Trying to order what we usually order to be told “I just can’t” in a very rude manner. Haven’t been the first time either.

Have been using this takeaway for a good few years and recently they were either taken over or did a shake up of their menu. The food is always fresh and flavourful. One main note that has put me off Chinese was the bright red sweet and sour sauce. At Town Gate the sweet and sour sauce is a more normal colour and tastes amazing.

Absolutely lovely and delicious food, friendly and helpful staff. Good quality and value for money. Highly recommended.

Had my 2nd take away from here tonight, the first was incredible, this one is also incredible! Absolutely delicious and enough for tomorrow too ☺️ I dropped the bag on my way to the car and went back in for another bag, they took it off me and cooked me more! Couldn't have been more helpful. Definitely going back and highly recommended! 👍🏻

Really excellent takeaway we used to go to the other Chinese takeaway in Town but the food standard had gone down so we tried Town gate had chicken battered balls plenty of them thick pieces of chicken pipping hot we had a special curry aswell excellent

Staying in Abergavenny on holiday. Had a takeaway and the food is very tasty. Particularly liked the curry sauce. Very friendly and polite service. It's obviously a family business. We would recommend.

Went here for the first time tonight and it was amazing. One of the best chinese takeaways I have had and well worth the journey up from Monmouth. Would highly recommend and would definitely go again 😊

Provided a huge amount of food for 10 people to on-call NHS staff in Abergavenny for free. Everybody highly appreciated the gesture. Everyone show your support to this business just as they support our NHS :)

This is by far the best Chinese in town! I’d recommend the beef in black bean sauce (extra spicy) with Singapore fried rice.

Great food with a large selection of everyone's favourites. You can phone the order through and collect later bit waiting is only a short space of time. A family order usually attracts free prawn crackers which go down well with everyone especially with a portion of sweat and sour sauce. Prices are not to bad. You can only pay in cash which is sometimes a bind, would make things easier for all if card payments were accepted. Well worth a visit!

After buying a meal which was fit for the bin from another local Chinese recently I returned to Town Gate. I had chicken chow mein and sweet & sour chicken Hong Kong style and both were superb.

We have had many a take away from this particular place. Recently they have changed their recipes and it has made the food much tastier and enjoyable. The food never takes longer than 30 minutes to cook and be picked up. Overall a good place to get a take away👌

Shame you can't leave a zero or negative score. Ordered a takeaway based on positive reviews here. Food was expensive for just takeaway food and the portion sizes were tiny. The food itself was completely inedible..crispy duck quarter at £8.80 was shredded and deep fried to death..looked like a shredded brillo pad and completely inedible..our dogs even turned their noses up at this. Crispy beef in wine..tiny strips of beef in better fried to the consistency of wire..inedible..then drowned in two inches of brown vinegar inedible sauce. Chicken and vermichelli...didn't get..got spring rolls instead..only found out when I got home..egg fried rice...no egg just plain soggy fried rice..prawn crackers burnt and inedible..the whole lot went in the bin and I got McDonald instead.

Absolutely stunning food, the whole family agree and trust me that's rare. The new owners are so lovely and can never do enough for us. Would highly recommend to everyone. Every single meal has been outstanding 5 ⭐.

Lovely, tasty, authentic Chinese meal. Staff very courteous and even asked about allergies which shows excellent hospitality & customer service. Meal was ready within 15 minutes of ordering and still hot 20 minutes later after getting home. My little girl was even given a lollipop upon collection which I found very considerate. Will definitely order from here in the future!

Large portions tasty.....well worth another visit

Dropped in and ordered , so waited for the meals , not the best of ambiances ie some old worn sofas with the feet taken off , the service is a bit comical ,watching people come and those behind the counter checking if they knew what had been ordered , that said the dishes were lovely m the crispy chilli beef was awesome so will come back

Order for 1, always too much for 1 person. Food is good, hot, and plenty of it. Staff are always polite and talkative in their own way :)

Ordered over the phone to collect then had my order said back to me everything was fun went in picked up my order at the time stated got home it was the wrong food and it was also freezing cold I phone to complain told them I wasn’t happy the young lad in the phone went to speak to the other staff for them to then argue over this in their language and 2 minuets this went on for just for them to slam the phone down on absolutely shocking customer service I will never go back and wouldn’t recommend it my whole order in the bin

I have had a few takeaways from here and have never been disappointed. It’s your typical “basic Chinese takeaway” but the food is always tasty and piping hot. They do not offer a delivery service however.... maybe something to consider for the future?

Always come here on a Monday night as a treat, great service and quick, if not they always let me know why. Food is to die for and really big portions.. love it!

Nunca hemos tenido un problema al respecto, pero el menú es bastante estándar en vez de buena comida genial. Siempre a tiempo con sus tiempos de preparación al teléfono en un orden.

Bonita chip shop. Pregunté por algún pescado fresco si era posible y el propietario era más que felices de satisfacer. El negocio familiar y todos ellos trabajan duro, que es tan alentador. Vamos a volver. Le pregunté a empezar a vender saveloys ya que es mi favorito, que él debidamente obligados.

Prices here are comparable to other Chinese take aways in the near vicinity but the food here is lacking. It's not bad food, it just isn't as good as other places nearby. Service is efficient if a little frosty.
