Absolutely awful. 3rd time we have been here and complained everytime... food cold or items missing. Wine served in a brandy glass . Complaint sent to wetherspoons to be told sorry .we will speak to area manager.

Came to the Black boy for my evening meal great place good food and drinks good atmosphere great staff appreciate it being here after my accommodation isn’t serving food so very much appreciate this place

Decent food at a good value for money. Service was fast (ordered on the app). Food arrived quickly and was really good. Will certainly return again soon!

We called in today for a drink and I must say the glasses were filthy and in need of a good clean, this pub is very hit and miss there is no continuity, such a shame.

An £8 meal each isn’t what I would class a cheap meal at Wetherspoons…. Mixed grill was awful, scrag ends of meat totally over cooked. Was offered free drinks or free puddings… no! We bought a meal, get it right!

Recomended, easy parking outside, had fish and chips which were excellent which was part of a meal deal and included a drink.

Love this cosy little pub. Yes it's typical Spoons food but you get what you pay for. Pub is clean, staff are friendly and willing to help. Can't go wrong!!

Just want to say it's not that I had a bad experience tonight the fish supper was fabulous,yet on the next table staff gathered in numbers talking about other people they worked with,hated listening to that! The manager came to talk to one a interviewed meeting.The manager is not liked with most people his wife is lovely he needs talking to big time Vicky was more of a manager than he is he needs to move on learn about managing people.

In the centre of Newtown, with disabled access from a side street. Main entrance has step and is fairly narrow, so not suitable for wheelchair access.

It has that typical Wetherspoon pub feel about it. Food is always good, staff are always friendly. Everything is a decent price and wait times normally are pretty good. It can get very busy at times which can make it very noisy and crowded but...

Was asked for ID as no children aloud after 9pm at this point was only 8.30pm, was shocked to be asked but showed anyway to the lady at the bar who asked. To then have gone to my table and questioned and asked if i had ordered food and to have shown evidence, was very appalled as it was all paid for for her to then swear at me during a sentence. I was embarrassed and felt humiliated by such low professionalism after I had shown my ID and proof of ordered food.

Todos sabemos JD Wetherspoon ofrecen una buena variedad de bebidas a precios fantásticos pero hemos comido aquí en cuatro ocasiones y ahora sólo tengo una vez tenido ningún motivo de queja (un bistec un poco duro). Hay una gran variedad de comidas y sólo eres exigente con la comida no encontrará algo para tentar el servicio es rápido y amable y las porciones son bien. Hay un montón de ofertas que impliquen una comida y una bebida, que ofrecen una excepcional relación calidad-precio. El pub es mucho más grande que la fachada sugeriría y siempre hemos sido capaces de encontrar una mesa.

De paso, así que pensamos Wetherspoons sería un sitio seguro. Tenía la especial de cordero estofada con puré de patatas y verduras con la salsa. Era delicioso como bueno como cualquier dos veces el precio. La carne estaba cocinada a la perfección y lugar de servicio. Uno de los mejores Wetherspoons que hemos ido. A sólo un punto de interés las señales de aparcamiento exterior en las calles dijo el martes los titulares de permiso. Pedimos a las oficinas del Consejo y lo que eso significaba era que ponga a los turistas en día de mercado. Pregunta era podíamos aparcar como turistas en la calle con la señal o no y si es así ¿por cuánto tiempo. No sé! Quizás un local desea aclarar porque no podía información turística. .

Primero de todo, el personal, El Amber y sean dentro de esta Wetherspoons son de lejos los individuos más servicial, excéntrico y facilitar me han servido en todas las poons que he visitado. Estábamos atrapados por una mesa decente para sentarse y me senté en una con algunos vasos izquierda por alguien antes que nosotros, poco después, una camarera, Amber llegó y limpiaba la mesa sin ningún problema, aunque es muy acogedor.

Al otro lado de Gales, largo viaje en coche muy cansados y familia con hambre. Decidimos parar para comer algo aquí, y muy contentos de hacerlo. La comida era muy sabrosa, caliente y agradablemente sirve. Y todo en una noche muy concurrida. Mi marido es un chef, y él también estaba impresionado. Volveremos (pronto, espero).

Después de lo que había sido un día horrible con perder las llaves y los teléfonos móviles hotel y les encontrar me complace decir! ! Y luego el Elephant y Castle donde reservamos nuestra "Cena de Navidad" con una falla de potencia enorme. Como mis padres y yo estábamos muy hambrientos mis padres nos recomendó que vaya a El Negro Chico y qué buena elección fue, a pesar de que era sábado noche y bastante concurrido, nos sirvieron con nuestros pedidos de forma extremadamente rápida y nada era demasiado problema para el personal, que eran excelentes para la toda la comida y bebida que pedimos vinieron todos a menos de 25 libras. 00 y la calidad era excelente no sé cómo JD Wetherspoon puede hacerlo por el precio! ! Enhorabuena A TODO EL PERSONAL EN EL BLACK BOY! ! Como mis padres viven en Newtown sé que trae bastantes amigos y familia, ahora tienen una nueva y a convertir - ME convertirse mi esposa cuando ella vuelve a casa de Goa.

we called here for lunch today it has a really nice relaxed atmosphere and the staff were very friendly and thanked customers for their custom and made sure everything was satisfactory .I ordered the shanghai noodles with added chicken and my partner ordered the chilli con carnie we both really enjoyed our meals and we didn,t have to wait too long before our meals arrived ,my partners chilli con carnie came with rice and chips i tried one of the chips wow very nice not oily and very tasty .This was our second visit to the black boy and we would recommend eating here a really good wetherspoons very spacious and clean and tidy whilst we were there there was a guy cleaning down the tables as they were vacated and making them tidy again and he made a point of thanking customers for their visit including us as we left ,really good customer service ,i have worked in a coffee shop/restaurant and it is not easy work especially when its busy so i notice customer service and today the cutomer service at the Black Boy was excellent .

Visited late on a thursday night, very quick service and a superb steak which was cooked to perfection. Very impressed with service, clean and tidy.

Popped in for a quick pint and game of pool seems to be ok very friendly bar staff. good location not much else was hapening at 2 in the afternoon

A big family reunion, well 15 of us anyway, of all ages.Arrived at 12 noon and left at three. We were offered a good area where we could all sit together to eat and chat. The food was good and very reasonably priced and each dish had an included choice of drinks.The staff were efficient though not it our face. Plates were removed promptly so we had plenty off space for family photos and the kids entertained themselves with the help of games sheets and crayons provided by one of thee waitresses.Thank you the Black Boy for a nice lunch including the time and space for an unhurried get together.

We love using this homely pub for breakfast, a coffee break or even a meal. You can learn so much about the area simply by looking at the work on the walls.

Went this morning for breakfast with a friend, we were two of about 6 customers in there decides to have the cooked breakfast, very disappointing bacon cold rest lukewarm will not be having that again very poor

How could you possibly moan about Fish, Chips, mushy peas and a pint of Doombar for less than £7, closely followed by several more pints of Doombar at £2.49 a pint... Nice

Only called in for a coffee and tea with a work colleague. One cappuccino and one white tea. Had to ask for a spoon to fish out the tea bag and also the milk to provide the "white". The tea turned into a cappuccino tea when the waiter provided a slight sprinkling of chocolate as he dusted the coffee. I had to clear down our table in order to use it. The carpet was in dire need of a good hoovering and we were then treated to the same waiter collecting cups and tipping the dregs onto the carpet. Well that's one way of keeping the dust down. Don't think I'll rush back! Side note: it wasn't that busy.

The place is very busy but only two staff were working behind the bar and one poor waitress delivering food to the tables.The food is good value and quite tasty but the service lets the place down.

Had lunch with my cousins here today and everything was once again excellent! The staff were so friendly and helpful, the food was excellent!! Massive portions bursting with flavour. Totally enjoyed it here.Despite being very busy service both with ordering and delivery of food etc was really speedy and the staff attentive. All the staff were friendly and efficient!!

We called on steak club night and were impressed with the deals on offer.Staff were friendly and meals were cooked promptly. With a steak and a pint for under £8 you really can't grumble. The mixed grill also went down well and the range of real ales was impressive.

The chef likes goid music, its a happy kitchen and it shows in the food. Can be slow to clear tables when customers leave though.

The staff here are excellent friendly and happy as well as berry helpful. The food is great value for money and a totally excellent portion size. The menu has an excellent choice and food delivery is speedy. Had lunch there again to day after a few weeks of not being able to get there and everything just gets better. There is no loud music to contend with so it is possible to have a conversation with the other people with you. Totally excellent place, air conditioning very nice on this hot day. Well worth a visit!!

We ate here twice on our stay. The food and service is great. Typical pub food but fresh and tasty. It was Easter weekend when we visited and it was very busy but the food arrived quickly.

Had lunch with my cousins here again today as we have for the last few weeks on different days. The food has been consistently good and great value for money as well as excellent choice on the menu! The service has also remained consistently good even during busy times, the staff are friendly and have always been happy and efficient! Tables are cleared quickly, bar staff excellent, all round an enjoyable excellent service!! Food full of flavour and cooked well!!

This was a local ale house about to be closed down. Weatherspoons stepped in to transform and save it. Which was a good thing as its a fine building. Usual meals and drinks friendly enough with polite staff.

A great pub to visit for a good value meal in Newtown. Right on the main street, so limited free car parking spaces for one hour max. otherwise park in nearby car park (charge applies). I particularly like the curry specials on Thursday and the Steak day too. Always great value. They serves Ruddles beer (on tap) most days and many different guest ales too, at around £2 per pint. Coffee is particularly good value, a mug costing £1.05 and unlimited refills until 2pm, so a great place to go to surf the internet with a tablet (Cloud Wi-Fi - free to join) or read a book/newspaper or to meet a friend or have lunch. There is plenty of space inside. The toilets are good quality and clean too. There is also quite a nice beer garden space outside for when the sun shines (not at the moment!).

Busy and well-appointed, with barely adequate food and service which could be a little quicker. The one big gripe is the mis-translation of "Beware, hot surface" into Welsh - very annoying and quite an insult really.

This is the second time I have eaten at The Black Boy Hotel, again the food was excellent value and great quality. As a visitor to the area the staff were helpful and friendly. Don't be fooled by the frontage!! It opens up into a fantastic place to eat.

the visit was going to be a treat but! on arrival there was lots of inground food in the carpets ,the chairs had food stuck to them everything you touched was sticky but we still wanted to try the food here until whilst waiting to be served we saw meals come out that were returned by the customers this needs to be managed by the senior staff not a patch on the one in Wellington

Since this "food for the people" place opened in Newtown my wifw and I have been great fans. Its just what we want convenient, nice food, friendly service and certainly outstanding value for money. Judging by the number of customers that are always there it must be sucking the lifeblood out of those catering outlets in the region who for years have traded on the mediocre.So OK this is not gourmet dining but two very nicely cooked (tender) Sirloin steaks, a side order of crispy fried prawns with chips and salad PLUS two drinks for way south of £20 the other day says it all.The downside is that it can be noisy and crowded. We are working our way through the menu and so far have not found anything we don't like. Must try breakfast one day.Pleased to recommend to others who enjoy the plain and simple.

Visited again today for lunch with my cousins and I have to say that everything was perfect. Nothing was too much trouble for Jamie and his efficient team this lunch time. People were served quickly, tables were cleaned and cleared quickly, milk coffee refill etc topped up and changed quickly when they ran out, food was cooked to total perfection and delivered to the table quickly. The staff were all faultless Scott who served me behind the bar, Jamie who delivered my food, the young lady who came to check everything was ok and Jamie also checked everything was OK. I must say the staff are polite and efficient, as stated nothing was too much trouble and they were busy despite the rain, everyone is so polite, good great value for money. We enjoyed our visit so much today we have decided to make a weekly trip there for lunch. It's pub food, honest and good quality, a great choice on the menu great portion size such a relaxing atmosphere made possible by the strong staff team that were there today at lunch time. I have only named two members of staff but they were all a credit to the Black boy and of course the company as a whole! Thank you so much!!

Omg the food is great especially the chips they are so crispy. Please try English breakfast lovely lovely lovely. Also take my word for it once you order you wait about 10 minutes unbelievable. Also for desert try sticky toffee pudding it's delicious.

I don't understand why this Wetherspoons pub is so busy. We have been there three times now and had a problem every time. Very disappointing. We won't try again!!

Very good revamp.meal are not bad .but you get what you pay for.staff behind bar need retraining as are very slow.

A very good revamp of a popular local pub. Lots of locals come in throughout the day perhaps for a coffee and meet with friends.Always busy. It has a garden area and as it is in the centre of town, it is always busy.Plenty of atmosphere.

it is such a pity that this place did not keep up the good standards it started out with, I went last night for a birthday tea, ordered fish chips and peas, the service was quick and friendly , too quick in fact as my fish was raw in the middle, it was replaced with the worst fish I have ever had the misfortune to receive, thin dry and thick hard batter, once was bad enough but twice is incompetence.....who ever was in the kitchen at 5.30 Friday 21/08/15 shame on you.......the only saving grace was the chips were delicious, the waiting staff were friendly,....... the table needed a good clean but as I mention at the start standards have dropped such a shame ordered toasted cheese sandwich on a previous visit you needed a magnifying glass to spot the cheese very mean and mingy,,.....

3rd time I've walked out now before being served. Went in for some food at 9pm fairly busy but not packed. Stood at bar for 5mins to get served counted 7 people in front of me, 2 staff serving. After another 5mins had 5 people still in front of me. Lost the will to live & got a kebab. Been to many Wetherspoons for food as I work away from home a lot. Normally good service & get what you pay for grub. Would suggest they get some more staff at this one!

Food here is good and of Wetherspoons standard. Its very busy and the staff are very quick to serve you. Its friendly atmosphere although a little rowdy at times as the bar and dining area is in close proximity. Been here on a few occasions now and its worth a visit

Visited 8th June 2015 & had Sunday roast. The meat was without question the worst beef I've ever tasted. It was tasteless & impossible to cut. I for the first ever sent my meal back. It was replaced by a turkey dinner which was better but sadly on the cold side. First time to the black boy & maybe my last.

The Black Boy is now Wetherspoons. They have jazzed it up and it is nicely decorated.The service was quick even though they were very busy. Friendly staff. The chilli dog was lush and my husbands sirloin steak nice and tender.Thank you.

Went here saturday night (21/2/15) with friends for a drink. i was asked for I.D, which is fine as i am 22 years old. They refused my driving licence and said it was a fake, they then gave me my licence back and accepted my money for the other drinks that i was buying for the group! would not recommend this pub.

Food is good, we go about three times a week, we work late and could not make it at home for the price they charge on specials nights. Staff always helpfull.

The food was absolutely awful. Badly cooked. badly presented, cold and some of it inedible:raw meat. The salad was nothing more than a bowl of bruised leaves. The staff offered little in sympathy, simply removing the raw meat of my plate and replacing it with a different piece a few minutes later. Will never eat there again and aggrieved that I had to pay for food that was inedible and by the staff who offered nothing in the way of recompense; who treat paying customers with contempt..

We went last night 10th January....sorry but it is the last time for a meal!!!!!We both had to send the food back as they were BOTH cool . When they were returned mine was just passable... even the side chilli sauceand coleslaw tasted awful !!!!!!!...how can any resturant keep getting chicken strips and chips wrong !!!!2 weeks ago my friend had the chicken wings........{those are just microwaved]...COLD.IT seems they tend to over fry their food in oil too hot so centre does not get fully cooked.!!

Every thing the meal was stone cold and looked like it had been hanging around for a long time, no one came to ask if all was ok, on the whole it was very disappointing and we will not be going there again

This is a new Wetherspoons in a little Welsh town. The decor was new and it was a pleasant environment with some lovely pictures of how the town looked in days gone by. We received excellent service from the moment we entered the pub. The staff were friendly and welcoming and the food was delivered very quickly and was hot and tasty. Our party of four all had different meals and nobody was dissatisfied, it was extremely good value for money. Will definately be returning for some Christmas cheer.

Visited on way home from holiday choose meals from the afternoon deals. Service when ordering was friendly and efficient. Drinks were promptly served and good. Me and fellow colleagues visited this restaurant when working near by we were massively disappointed by the food and service the chicken was damp and tasteless and the ribs were barely eddable overall I wouldn't go again it's appalling, and as an aftermath spent the following day with a bad stomach in the bathroom! Do not go!

This was a great way to celebrate Fathers Day and a Birthday. No need to book. There was a choice of seats as it was before 12.00 when the main Sunday lunches began and as usual good menu choices. We got there about 11.00, the place had families in and a good atmosphere. Great cheerful service and superb traditional Breakfast. We shall definitely go back for brunch.

Decided to go for an earlyish meal, arrived at just after 6 pm and it was absolutely packed. Struggled to find a seat but eventually did. I agree with other reviewers about the decor and the speed of service but the meal looked totally bland. I guess you get what you pay for . It is a great place I guess for an everyday bite to eat and a drink but I wouldn't recommend it for a special event.I would also try a later time if you want a bit more of an adult environment.The staff were helpful and were working very hard to cope with the volume of customers.

This pub has just had a £1million pound makeover and it shows! The layout is great, the decor welcoming and the toilets first class.I went with my two teenage girls for an early evening meal and a drink. The menu choice was great and included some good veggie options, the staff welcoming and efficient and the food was really good. I had the chicken and bacon ceasar salad, my eldest daughter a classic burger, and my other daughter had salmon salad and chips. The meals arrived promptly and my daughters were impressed with the vast array of sauces etc on the table - no puny packets/ sachets to open.The portions were a good size and we all cleared our plates ( which is a very good sign). My girls had room for pudding. They were disappointed to find that they had run out of warm chocolate fudge cake ( it had been a busy day as Tuesday is Market day in Newtown) , however their second choice of pancakes more than made up for it. Four pancakes , a generous amount of sauce or maple syrup and 2 scoops of ice cream.The girls' lemonades were included in their meal deal, I couldn't resist a glass of Villa Maria Sauvignon blanc - a lovely wine and one of my favourites. I was pleased to see it on the wine list available by the glass.All three of us left replete and looking forward to our next visit.

Thanks to JD Witherspoons for the big makeover of this great pub just what Newtown needed service was fast food was great staff so polite loved those ceiling lights and the print of Laura Ashley hanging on the wall with so many other prints and story's from the history of this old town we will be back x

Went here today to the staff training session. Was impressed with the venue, it's so nice! The food, service and whole experience was great! Very friendly staff who were attentive and very polite. I look forward to next week when it opens.

The Black Boy closed at the end of 2013. It has been acquired by Wetherspoons and is undergoing a multi-million pound refurb. It is expected to re-open in April/May 2014.

Do not be put off by first appearances. This is a pub and though it is not fancy it serves very good food and drinks at an excellent price. I would use this hostelry again

Nothing bad but not good either. had the carvery and was very average. Did not visit the hotel but just the pub. Service was friendly.

We`ve been to the Black Boy on our last 2 visits to Newtown on both occassions the landlords have made us most welcome. There is quite an extensive menu but whatever you ask for they will do their best to accomodate your requests.The food was very good, great ales, nice wines, a lovely outside seating area.The only negative side is that there are televisions but there is a dining room where you can get away from them.

went here for lunch had the carvery £21 for 3 of us, ive never seen so much food. i had the beef just melted in the mouth and you can help yourself to everything else too much to mention, well worth the price cant wait to go visit friends to go back and have another carvery.

I have been going to Wales since the early 90's and have a relative living there. I went to this pub as it is the only one I will entertain when taking my Aunt out for a meal. We went for a carvery late lunchtime and it was one of the best meals I have had.It is good value, plenty of food, children are welcome and real ale. It is a little hard to park as the car park is in a back street between two houses so go looking for it as it is worth a visit. The Welsh Lamb was melt in the mouth gorgeous.

A superb carvery, spoilt for choice on all the different meat and veg. All the staff are very friendly. I highly recommend this place.

This place is one of the best places to go have a carvery. There is always 3 diffrent meats and if you like all 3, they let you have all 3. Your not limited like some pubs where you get 1 roast pot and few veg. Here it is help your self, some times my eye's been bigger than my belly.

I have family which live in Wales & when I go to visit I try to fit in a visit to the carvery here because it is just the best carvery I have had anywhere! I went here again just last week on a Tuesday which is market day in Newtown with my parents & children. We were not disappointed as we never are! The choice of meat was lamb, pork or turkey, I have had in the past a bit of more than one meat but on this occasion decided to go for the turkey, which is sliced for you - quite a plateful too! Then on you go to help yourself to stuffing, Yorkshire pudding, new boiled potato, roast potato, potato gratin. The veg if I can remember all of them consisted of brocilli & cauliflower cheese, mushy peas, garden peas, cabbage, carrot, swede, roast parsnip, green beans, broad beans, chick peas, butter beans, and sprouts. I think that was all but I may have missed some as I don't like all of them! You certainly have no problem getting your five a day! It is a lovely old pub which has been extended at the back & has very nice toilets & changing facilities for babies, it has outside seating in the courtyard too. I have never seen the rooms or sampled any other food but there are other bar meals available as well as the carvery.Cannot recommend this enough, just wish it was nearer where I lived! Or that other places that do a so called carvery understood that there is more than carrot & peas to be had as veg like they do here!
