We left with a mixed experience of the Checkers after our stay in January.
Highlight was the tasting menu. Fantastic courses each with a delightful blend and mix of flavours. Credit must be given to chef Andrew for his expertise and presentation style. Excellent too at £85. You will have to go far to find a tasting menu of similar quality and value.
The service and hospitality though was solemn and sedate. Greetings on arrival were somewhat formal with little conversation and this was the approach to service throughout our evening and overnight stay. Each course being served without the passion they deserved, being functionally presented. We never saw Andrew either and he didn’t come out to chat to his guests.
The overnight accommodation was very well presented with good facilities, although quite cold with the heating going off before we retired for the night. We can’t comment about breakfast as unfortunately we were slightly late after 9:30am due to an urgent family call we had., my partners mother being taken into hospital. We apologised to Rachel who advised that we were 8 minutes late and the kitchen had closed. There was only ourselves and another couple who stayed over that evening! A very strange way to treat guests who are paying well over £400 for the experience.
So go to the Checkers for the excellent Michelin rated cuisine, but not if you expect warm service and hospitality to support the dining experience.
An unexpected find. We were looking for something to eat on the eve of New year's eve. As we walked by we saw that Fabian s was open and looked lovely inside. The owners greeted us and made us feel very welcome. As it was cold they put a portable heater by the table. We loved the menu, a choice of Indian food, pizza or burgers. Something for everyone. The food was excellent. The curry was amazing, my husband ate the chickpea and spinach curry which he said was the best he'd had. So glad we found this place. So welcoming and fabulous food.
Lovely local server. I had the vegetarian curry, which was (surprisingly) brilliant! Homemade, and tasted fresh and well-balanced spices- unusual for a vegetarian meal. Husband had ham, egg and chips. Chips were crispy, and ham was a generous portion, tasty and thick-cut. 😋 2 slices of ham, and 2 eggs. Great 👍
Unexpectedly strong cooking on offer in this snug local. Lamb and Borlotti Beans, fresh prawns, crisp broccoli and even just plain roasted parsnips and carrots - all small plates. We really enjoyed it.
We have been going to this little gem of a restaurant for the last couple of years, and it never ceases to disappoint. A very warm welcome from Katie & the girls as usual. Another delicious meal yesterday & very good value!! I had the Spicy Chicken Sizzler which certainly warms you up on a cold day, washed down with a couple of pints of Butty Bach. My mother had the BBQ chicken melt which was very tasty & chocolate brownie for dessert. We shall look forward to visiting again soon. Keep up the good work 😊
Stayed with my daughter for a couple of nights before the school term restarts. Room was spotlessly clean and had everything we needed. Very quiet with a gorgeous view of the Welsh countryside. Breakfast was lovely and filling. A real shame they don't do evening meals as it meant we ended up with takeaways in the car as I wasn't sure if we'd be allowed to bring in hot food. That aside, we enjoyed our stay and would not hesitate to book again.
An original concept, very well executed with great staff in a lovely setting. The food was delicious. We made the journey to Defynnog especially to visit this place and it more than lived up to expectations.
Superb food and friendly staff. Booked a table for 7 plus 2 dogs and requested breakfast, even though we were due to arrive shortly after midday. The Full Breakfast was fantastic, as well as the falafel wrap and salad. The dogs were treated to free dog treats and supplied with fresh water. This was our second visit to the cafe and certainly won't be our last.
Second visit to this village pub.
Great atmosphere with lovely open fire.
Food was amazing - they catered for 17 of us although we had preordered.Plenty of choice and it was all home cooked and absolutely delicious.
Will definitely be going again.
The most relaxing dining in the wonderful eclectic home of chef Kerry and front of house Paul. The food is outstanding, beautifully presented with delightful flavours. There is true passion in every dish with the added bonus of fresh grown produce from their garden. A must visit whenever in the area
Travelling today from North Wales to Cardiff to visit our son - we decided to stop somewhere different for something to eat.
Found this hidden gem. Lovely atmosphere, welcoming staff and a really tasty breakfast!!
We will definately be stopping here again!
Ordered 30 delicious pizzas for a group, and they did not disappoint! Every pizza was fresh, flavorful, and arrived hot. The staff was incredibly accommodating and provided excellent service throughout the process. Great value for such high-quality food. Highly recommend for any event or gathering!
Six of us for Sunday lunch. We had a great time. The waitresses were really good, the meal was able portion and really tastie. Would recommend. That's Kerry lamb team
We came across this gorgeous little tearoom quite by chance when we turned off the A483 to look for somewhere to get a cuppa about halfway through our journey between Leeds and Pembrokeshire.
We only got a takeaway hot drink on that occasion to accompany the sandwiches we’d brought with us and which we ate on a nearby bench. We knew then, though, that this would be a great place to stop off for lunch a week later on our way home. Friendly and efficient Meg, who served us, recommended that we book a table in advance on our way back, and how right she was. This is a small tearoom and deli, which is very popular with the locals … and rightly so. The savoury food, the homemade cakes and scones, the hot drinks and the customer service are all amazing. There only seem to be about three staff in total, but the food they prepare is fresh and attractively presented, and the homemade cakes were delicious. Even though they were constantly very busy with seated and takeaway customers, on our return visit, Shirley did an excellent job of making everyone feel welcome, advising on the food, taking orders and generally being super-efficient, while also being friendly.
Just a few minutes’ drive along the B4390 off the A483, situated in a beautiful village, this tearoom is a real gem and we will certainly call in there again for lunch or coffee and cake (well, actually, we will try to pre-book) next time we are in the area. Highly recommended.
First and foremost the scenery was exquisite, this little gem under the bridge is the perfect brunch spot. The menu was simple but the chef knows how to combine their foods. Halloumi, Avocado, Bacon, Chilli Jam and Spinach. Phenomenal! The staff were so polite and were genuinely interested in our travel plans and holiday experience. Would 100% recommend if you're looking for a picturesque spot with gorgeous view parallel to it's gorgeous food.
