Stayed with my daughter for a couple of nights before the school term restarts. Room was spotlessly clean and had everything we needed. Very quiet with a gorgeous view of the Welsh countryside. Breakfast was lovely and filling. A real shame they don't do evening meals as it meant we ended up with takeaways in the car as I wasn't sure if we'd be allowed to bring in hot food. That aside, we enjoyed our stay and would not hesitate to book again.

Me and my friend stayed here for 2nights. The owners were both welcoming, I had great conversation with both, breakfast was great and room was comfortable and cosy with a beautiful window view. Also the garden area is a lovely peaceful place to relax to enjoy morning cuppa/evening unwind. Thank you for letting us stay. I'll definitely come back to visit. X

My girlfriend and I had a quick weekend break in South Wales, having blasted through Cardiff on Saturday and then heading into the Brecon Beacons in the evening. I found the Kestrel Inn through a Google map search of the area we wanted to hike around on Sunday, and booked one night of B&B using their website, which was better value than booking.com etc. We booked a table for arriving on Saturday evening, and having dropped our bags off in our well proportioned double room, went back downstairs for dinner. The dining area is simply brilliant - warm, cosy, with a good number of tables available. There's a great big fireplace to enjoy with sofas in front, and the whole place really is an ideal image of a hearty country pub. We sat at the bar before dinner, which was stocked with a number of local ales and ciders, which we enjoyed before moving to our table. The food was simply excellent - a great selection of British/French dishes that were all delicious and the perfect portion size. I should emphasise that my girlfriend is both vegetarian and gluten-free, yet she had options available to her from the main menu (available to view on the Inn's website), and she was pretty happy with every dish! The owner was very friendly, and provided us with some good advice for hiking the following day - we tackled the Dragon's Back, which was this mid-level trail around the ridgeline of a valley that offered great views, and also took you to the ruins of the highest castle in England and Wales. After a flawless night's sleep in our double room and waking up to a view out the window of the wonderful valley surrounding the Inn, we had a very filling breakfast with continental options to start followed by a very hearty cooked breakfast. Again, the latter was absolutely fantastic, with pretty much everything being locally sourced (eggs and mushrooms in particular were delicious) as well as fresh coffee and orange juice - the perfect start to a day of trekking! Really can't recommend this place enough, it is a true hidden gem that is always worth a visit - book now to ensure you can enjoy it!

We arrived at the restaurant wet and cold after wading through flood plains and rain. We were welcomed into this cozy restaurant and warmed by the fire. The food was amazing - Hands down the best fish and chips I’ve ever had. The owner made us feel right at home and even drove us back to our bed and breakfast. We debated dining somewhere else our second night to venture out but decided we couldn’t miss a second chance at this place so we went back. The second night still exceeded our expectations.

We had a delicious dinner at The Kestrel. My husband always chooses Whitebait whenever it is on the menu, he commented that it was the best he had ever eaten. I had the potato and chorizo croquettes which were very tasty, and accompanied by rocket with a delicious dressing. My husband ordered the Lamb rump, while I had the slow roasted belly pork, both were memorable. We couldn’t resist the puddings - my husband chose the crumble which he thought was exceptional and I had the chocolate brownie which just happened to be Gluten Free which made it even better thAn the usual recipe. We were very well looked after by Mine Host who really cares about his customers.

Came recently with a group of friends for a couple of nights - would 100% recommend! Really cosy rooms with incredible views of rolling snow capped mountains - super comfortable mattresses and powerful hot showers. Food is absolutely delicious - we had the camembert, snails + mushroom bourguignon which were so tasty. They also catered really well for me considering I'm gluten free which was really appreciated! Great local walks + v friendly family that runs the pub. Will definitely stay again.

Booked it the night before for a very last min trip from London. So pleasantly surprised! Firstly... the room was spotlessly clean, for me, this is the most important thing! Ok.... it’s lovely and cosy, there are 2 rooms so it’s peaceful, there’s a restaurant that serves really really good home cooked, good quality food. The breakfast included in the stay is spot on! The coffee is outstanding! The owners are very welcoming, happy and warm! The views are stunning ! It is extremely good value! We have visited this area a few times and have stayed in the more “advertised” more expensive hotel’s and this is by far my favourite! I will definitely be returning!! Fantastic find!

Eight of us were looking for the perfect place to celebrate my mother’s 70th birthday and we found it in the Kestrel Inn. Every meal was delicious- from the four adult entrees to the delicious kids’ meals, there wasn’t a crumb left at the end of the dinner. The owner was very accommodating for our 8 month old as well. I would recommend this to anyone coming to Crickhowell or the surrounding towns. I especially recommend the sea bass! (And the steak, and all of the desserts, and actually, everything that I tried.)

The Kestrel is unconventional in that the decor is not what you might expect, seemingly owing something to a welsh tearoom more than anything else. The food and drink however are in a totally different league! Quite simply some of the best prepared and presented food we have eaten for a long time, accompanied by a cleverly assembled wine list. Service was friendly, informal and personable and overall we had an excellent evening that we will hope to repeat when next in the area -and we will go a long way out of way to eat here again

Finished off our week in Crickhowell with a visit to the Kestrel Inn for an evening meal (it is only open on Fridays and Saturdays). The experience was very enjoyable indeed with informal surroundings and a very welcoming host. The cooking (by the missus) was comparable to our lunch at the excellent Michelin starred Walnut Tree in Llanddewi Skirrid with a good choice of dishes (we had lamb rump and a sirloin steak) and the wine list had a good selection of first rate wines at amazingly reasonable prices - talk to the host about them: he says he is a 'wine nut'!) - and our Ch. Musar Jeune went down much too easily.................we left clutching a quirky French glass decanter that the boss let us buy since we were so taken with it. We are holidaying in Crickhowell again next year and we will certainly visit again.

We stayed in Crickhowell and most of the restaurants were full on a Saturday night. So we checked google and found this little gem. So glad we did, it was 8 min drive from our cottage. We had the sea bass, Coq du vin, and 3 steaks with truffle butter.. All superb, even the desserts were top notch - lemon cheesecake and apple and plum crumble with custard, both tasted home made. The vegetables were fresh and organic and the meat is locally produced from a butcher.... Steak melted in our mouth and chips were crispy and yum. Richard and his family made us feel welcome, and nice warm venue - thank you. Best meal we had on our trip. I think restaurant only open Friday and Saturdays so defo book a table, great value for money.

The waitress tilted my plate as she put it down, tipping food into my lap onto the table and onto the floor. Apologies from "mine host" were muted rather than effusive. When I came back from trying to clean up a bit, the remaining food was sitting on the table waiting for me. While the table had been wiped there was still food on the floor under my seat. My request that this should be cleared up was treated with a degree of surprise. Oddly I didn't want to put my feet on the food! The food was adequate rather than particularly tasty. When the bill came, absolutely no reduction had been made, notwithstanding the fact that I didn't even get to eat the full portion. Not good enough!

Vegetarisch valt erg tegen.

We were out for a drive one Sunday and it was getting to lunchtime. As the sun was shining we decided that we had to look for lunch either now, or leave it until later when things would be a little calmer. Driving along the A40 from Brecon towards Crickhowell, we could see ahead of us some signs for The Kestrel Inn. As we approached there were no cars in the car park. We could see the sign said 'serving lunch' but we were slightly put off by the empty car park so carried on along the road heading for Crickhowell. I sneaked my phone out of my bag to look up the Inn on TripAdvisor and saw it had some good, recent reviews. We stopped at a petrol station in Crickhowell so I rang the pub to check they were open and serving lunch then instructed my husband to turn around and go back the way we came "I want to try that Kestrel Inn please". Well - thank goodness we did! The welcome was so warm, two lovely gentlemen behind the bar, eager to chat, serve us our drinks (a great selection of gins was available) and offer us the menu. We had a fantastic Sunday lunch, the beef simply fell apart, the home made horseradish was explosive, and the coffee and walnut semi-freddo was sooooooo delicious I couldn't speak! We finished our lunch with amazing coffee served out in the garden with the most breathtaking views over the surrounding countryside. The younger of the two gentlemen came out to check everything was okay and we had a long chat with him. Apparently they also have rooms and are currently renovating the property across the road from the Inn. As soon as we know they are finished - we shall be back! This is definitely a place to come to eat, to stay, to enjoy the scenery, we can't wait!

Had a lovely Sunday lunch here. Good priced menu, delicious food and decent portion sizes. The view from outside is stunning and the family who run the pub are delightful. Next time we're in the area will be sure to return.

We turned up for a late lunch and they kindly kept the kitchen open late. They accommodated dietary requirements very easily. The food is good.

Wishing we had found this pub earlier in our holiday. We all enjoyed our meals from steak to the veggie option. Definitely try the puddings. Good value for money better standard than usual pub grub.

The Kestrel Inn Crickhowell lies directly on the Main A 40 some 10 miles from Brecon and is within the National park. Once an old coaching Inn it has recently started B & B having 2 rooms currently for rent. I recently stayed for 2 nights in the double room. All though the room wasn't very spacious it was comfortable and light having double aspect windows. One with spectacular views of the mountains. A small slightly cramped ensuite shower and toilet which could have benefited with larger towels and perhaps shampoo was adequate. Coffee and tea making facilities again slightly cramped but welcome. Well decorated and sufficient storage for the 2 nights I was there. Breakfast is provided in the Inn restaurant and consists of a range of cereals or a cooked breakfast plus tea or coffee. The restaurant which I didn't use does have a varied menu and caters for vegan and vegetarian. There is also a well stocked bar.

Looking for a place to eat after visiting family in Carmarthen, we came upon the Kestrel Inn, purely by passing by. We went in and asked if they could accommodate and thankfully they could. Firstly very impressed with the inside, the toilets exceptionally clean. Whilst the menu is not big it is enough. We ordered our food and did not have to wait for our first course, once finished our mains were not long arriving. OMG the triple cooked chips - I have never tasted chips like it, crisp, dry and absolutely stunning. The steak and also the fish were beautiful. Our meals finished 3 of us the party decided that we could squeeze a desert in. WOW The Eton Mess just melted in my mouth, hubbie having the brownie and father apple crumble. Needless to say they were devoured within seconds. The service was amazing, the food stunning and the overall visit was bliss. Would highly recommend and will most definitely be going back for a second visit. Thank you for accommodating us at very short notice.

Our second visit here and again very good food and service.Lamb and pork belly very good but cauliflower soup a little bland. But I'm being picky. Deserts very good. A good atmosphere, welcoming and everyone very friendly.

Just been for Sunday lunch which was absolutely delicious & what a stunning countryside location. Rhys the barman was extremely polite & courteous, the owner of the business was also very warming. This is a real little gem, looking forward to our next visit already. Highly recommended.

We had excellent food and the staff were pleasant and helpful. Between the four of us we sampled a good variety of dishes and we all enjoyed it very much, particularly as much of the food is sourced locally

I gave this place top marks, although at the moment not the most flexible place to stay due to opening times as they are still building up trade.

Having visited Abergavenny we were heading home via Brecon when we chanced upon this lovely Pub. Rhys who was acting as both Barman, Waiter and Barista could have not been more helpful or welcoming. We had a delightful lunch and only wished that we could have lingered a little longer. One thing is for sure - we will return!

A superb evening meal for a family night out. The bar staff are extremely helpful and accommodating, nothing is too much trouble and they have a pleasant cheerful manner. The individual bottles of water at the table are a nice touch. All 4 of us had the Pork & Black pudding starters, an excellent dish. 3 of us had the Haddock in Amstel batter again excellent. One had Steak, again they were very pleased with it although for me the Haddock was best choice. I had the trio of ice creams for desert and I would recommend the Rhubarb ice cream. I wish I had ordered all 3 scoops in this flavour. We will defiantly visit again.....

Lovely local server. I had the vegetarian curry, which was (surprisingly) brilliant! Homemade, and tasted fresh and well-balanced spices- unusual for a vegetarian meal. Husband had ham, egg and chips. Chips were crispy, and ham was a generous portion, tasty and thick-cut. 😋 2 slices of ham, and 2 eggs. Great 👍

We were staying in Hay and Drover offer the only charger for electric vehicles in the town (and it's free). They were generous with their suggestions of using it overnight. They sell maps for local road and MTB rides too, so after we'd been out on one, we stopped by for a coffee and cake. They sell energy bars and gels too, if you're stocking up before or during a ride. A very friendly team!
