Wellington Hotel in Powys

We booked a table at the Wellington hotel brecon last night for my 40th birthday meal. We was seated fast even if it was in the dinning area and we had booked a table for the bar area, although our waitress seated us and just walked off without offering a drink order. After about 10mins I just went to the bar and got them myself, by the time I got back she had returned to offer a drink but I had already got them. The waitress then came back to take a meal order, I asked if they could swap out the 5oz rump on the mixed grill for a 8oz sirloin and I would be happy to pay the difference, she enquired and the answer came back no wich didn't sit well with me to start the night off. We ordered 2 8oz steaks rare with a side of onion rings instead and 2 starters, halloumi fries and garlic mushrooms in cheese sauce. The starters were OK, nothing special but ok although was served with no additional cutlery with wich to eat it. Maybe one notch above what you would expect at a weatherspoons The mains arrived and I'm not sure the chef knows the difference between rare and raw, this thing was almost as pink on the outside as it was in the center, there was zero seer on it and the fat was completly unchewable like rubber, chips wernt bad and the sauce was averagely ok. By the end we had left more than half a steak each because it was pathetic the onion rings were slimy and we had eaten one whole bowl of chips. Everything else was left as it was inedible and we left still hungry and contemplating buying a kebab. Probably due to the fact I was annoyed that they refused to make a small adjustment even though I said I would pay the difference I then started noticing faults such as the light fitting above our table being full of dust and not cleaned. To summarise I won't be returning, I paid £60+ for basically a bowl of chips and few peices of halloumi and a small bowl of watery mushrooms. Completely ruined my birthday meal experience and left my fiancé feeling guilty as she had hoped it would be a nice treat and felt she let me down but this was the wellies fault not hers. Sadly, this meal from here is up there with the worst I have ever received. We paid £21 each for Duo of Lamb and Lamb Pie. The waitress asked how we wanted the lamb and we said pink please. Then the meal arrived, to say the star of the show was the veg is not a joke. The lamb was 3 small slices and with the faintest tinge of pink, the pie? well the pie was inedible. I tried to cut into it with the knife but to no avail. I turned the pie over to find that is was soft and only just cooked in my opinion and when i cut it open, well it was like charcoal. I could not eat any of it. Im guessing it had been blasted in a microwave for waay too long. Overall this was a poor experience. We complained to the waitress and she apologised to us and if it was me at the place i would have been ashamed as a "chef" to send that out or even for the manager to come out an apologise.

Chose the Wellington as it is only half a mile from a parkrun! But what a beautiful hotel. Really comfy beds, lovely staff and a delicious breakfast.

1st visit today this year been previously many times last year and every visit we come all the staff are just amazing and so welcoming especially with our little parrot. Highly recommend the wellington and hope all the staff are well noticed for there hard work here. 5 🌟

Appalling! Service terrible, waitress came to table to say they were out of onions rings so they would bring garlic bread, we never actually asked for this! I ordered a ceaser salad and hunters chicken was brought over, when my salad finally arrived over an hour later and after my partner had finished his microwave sea bass it was some lattice leaves with fried chicken! Food was microwave and fried at best! Wine was awful too! Will definitely not be returning, looks nice from the outside but poor inside.

Went to lunch, was asked only to choose from a lunch menu which was fairly limited as the restaurant hadn't received a delivery. We both chose Steak, my companion unfortunately got a tiny piece. We're told that there was only one piece of steak left, she must have had the scrap which was left. as I said the choices were limited. As the menu stated it was £15.00 for 2 courses we decided to have a dessert, again very limited, the waitress suggested we look at desserts from another menu, which we did. When the bill came it was definitely not 2 courses for £15.00, i understand that we'd chosen desserts from a different menu but felt that was unfair, not our fault they hadnt had a delivery. This meal was a special occasion for a lady i care for, table was booked in advance, if they couldnt provide us with a variety they should have called us and given us the opportunity to cancel. Failing that they could have stuck to the £15.00 deal.The food was average. False advertising and extremely dissappointing. Sort it out. The waitress was amazing

Fabulous place to stay lovely atmosphere only problem had to ask for replenishing of toilet rolls coffee and sugar and milk every day ,spent 3 nights with no emptying of our bin and no clean towel ,embarrassing to ask for replenishing every day. Not the staffs faults cannot blame them in the bar or reception. Lovely people ,loved being in the court yard because I like a cigarette with a coffee , please stay there the staff were amazing .

Good hotel with a selection of amenities. Centrally located in Brecon. Room and en-suite were very clean. There is an on-site restaurant and bar, but we didn't visit either due to the short stay (2 nights). The restaurant appeared busy particularly on the Sunday. Staff were helpful and pleasant and happy to answer any questions we had.

Upon arrival, everything seemed ideal. The staff were friendly and we were provided with the room key and had the location of our room, No.16, explained. We made our way there and settled in. Because I'd been at work all day, I fancied a shower only to find the shower head leaked and provided very little in the way of water except for all over the floor. That didn't particularly bother me because I changed the setting to another less effective one. The room was comfortable, absolutely nothing like the pictures, but still adequate. The tea making facilities were lacking anything but 2 cups, 2 glasses and 2 coffee bags. There were no tea bags, sugar or milk which isn't what you want after 3 hours of driving. We gave up on that and headed out. That night was horrendous. At about 5am, we were woken up by the sound of something scurrying and scratching above us. I initially thought it was birds but it was far too early and could only have been rats. Because of that, I couldn't sleep and was wide awake until we headed down to breakfast. At breakfast, we sat around for ages only to realise that you only had one member of staff on who was frantically trying to serve all the tables etc. There was a nice selection of items there, albeit the lack of orange juice because it hadn't been refilled. My partner, who hadn't slept due to the noise wasn't feeling hungry so I wasn't impressed that I still paid £8.75 for a slice of toast. After we'd eaten, I brought all the above issues to the attention of the member of staff who "noted" them down. When we returned, after spending the day hiking we booked our evening meal for 7.30.We returned to the room only to find we still had no tea making facilities. At dinner time, we browsed the menu and my partner ordered the breaded feta and I ordered the sticky chicken without the blue cheese mayo because of my allergies. We were then informed you were out of the feta, so she ordered the same as me. When it arrived they both had the blue cheese mayo which isn't good because it was mentioned about the allergies. Less than 5 minutes later, mine arrived minus the mayo which concerned me due to the speed they cooked the replacement. I ate it, wondering what was sticky about it. We then ordered out mains, I had the sirloin medium rare with peppercorn sauce and my partner opted for the cheese leak and potato pie but asked to swap the mash for the chips which was confirmed. The mains arrived but the pie came with mash so that was taken back. My steak was medium well but the wait meant the meal was going to be cold by the time my partners food came. I mentioned this and mine was replaced for a fresh one so we could have our meal together, as planned. They both came and mine was still not cooked right and my partners was so burnt that she couldn't even eat it. It almost looked like it had been kept warm or something because it was dry. This was shown to the poor girl serving us which she did apologise and looked embarrassed by it. Thankfully we were offered the meals for free and a pudding as an apology but it did ruin the meal and our evening. We had a few drinks and went back to the room for an early night due to not having much sleep the night before. Again, around 4am, the noises were back and we were both awake unable to fall back to sleep. We went to breakfast, all blurry eyed only to find there was less selection than the day before. The cooked breakfast was awful as well and we had to ask for butter. We ate what we could and left.

Our room was quite warm and stuffy but the noise from the fans outside made it impossible to open the window. The mens toilet in the bar was out of order and no accommodation had been made for customers there was no toilet paper in the ladies toilets and my partner observed a female member of staff come straight out a cubicle and returned to the bar pouring drinks with without bothering to wash her hands with I just found to be dirty

Really easy process to book a table online. Polite and helpful staff on arrival. Bar and eating area were clean and tidy. Food was well cooked, nicely presented and was delivered swiftly to the table. Portions were great. Will happily return.

Service wasn't great had an email for free non alcoholic drink and was told they didn't accept it waited 20 minutes after our drink order was taken to then have to chase our drinks up as they still hadn't arrived. Food took about 45 minutes after receiving our meals noticed that the Sunday lunch was missing items when we raised it with a member of staff we were told they had run out of those items so why wasn't we informed of that. Food itself was really delicious. We wasn't offered dessert we had to ask for it . Like I said service not great but food delicious

Meal 1: Chips were very nice (5 chips were eaten before taking photo), that's where it ended. Hunters chicken was a fake microwaved shambles with a square piece of plastic cheese on top - not quite the monterary jack I hoped for also no bacon that I could see. Green veg was a lump of iceberg lettuce... Meal 2: Cheese, leak and potato pie, another mass produced thing that had been microwaved (and burnt in the middle), filling tasted nice). Asked for no peas but it came out with nothing except mash. Sent it back and it came back with 1 large carrot chopped into a few batons 😂 the biggest baton as pictured is basically half a carrot. The carrot in question was meant to be honey-glazed but it's just a floppy disappointment. By far worst meal I've ever had which is unfortunate as the place seemed nice, was told chef hadn't turned up and it showed. Refund offered and apologetic but I refused refund as didn't want to make them struggle more than they clearly are. Please do better

Opportunistic visit for a late lunch. On arrival I asked for the lunch menu and was told he couldn’t find one and they were only accepting orders off the main menu! I didn’t question this and ordered, to then be told be the next table they had ordered the lunch deal. I then waited 15 minutes for a pot of tea, I asked the young female waitress could she check on my order and she said, without even checking “just wait it was coming”. Unhappy with this I went to the bar myself to find they had completely forgotten about the order. Then the manager who took the order then brought the wrong food over. The staff didn’t seem to get on and there was an atmosphere there. Food was ok, not worth the money, but the customer service was poor. Shame as I use to always visit when in Brecon, I recommend the Brecon Tap opposite, much better food and a very warm welcome.

Went for a meal with family and friends for some food before going out for new years, but wasn't the best experience as the food took over an hour to come out and looked as if it was thrown on to the plate and the top of the pie was also hard, wasn't the best as I've been there before and not had any other issues with it.

Always a nice place to stop for a drink as it has a real fire and plenty of room. A good selection of drinks on tap, including some unusual ciders. Never had food or stayed here so can't comment on that.

We stayed for a week. All in all a pleasant experience. Cosy hotel, friendly and helpful members of staff. Food is ok ish, but that depends on your preferences. Personally, I'm not into full English breakfast and was a bit disappointed in the continental breakfast. Not much choice there. Rooms and bathroom a bit dated, but very comfortable beds. The only really annoying thing for me was the fire door which was right outside next to our bedroom, room 5. A lot of people walked through that door and it always shut with a loud bang until late in the evening. Maybe, the hotel could try to put some form of mechanism in that door so it shuts slowly and more quietly. Also the windows in the hotelroom were extremely old and poor quality. They are single glassed, wet at all times (including the net curtains) and let in cold and noise. Time to replace them with double glassed windows that are insulated and stay dry. But I would come here again, it's a nice place in general. Thank you.

This is just an update following our visit in the summer (posted by “Malcolm”) to which the Wellington posted a reply asking us to contact them to discuss further. I duly replied - full email is below. They never replied. I can only think this was a dishonest ploy by the establishment to appear helpful in the response to the review and then just to ignore my email. This lack of care with service was very much in line with the Wellington’s behaviour during our meal. “Dear Wellington You requested I email you in response to the review we posted from “Malcolm” - that is actually my son’s name - the review was written by me. You asked for clarification on the baked cheese - the starters we ordered included both the sharing platter (with humus) and the baked cheese. Both humus and cheese were served with an inadequate quantity of bread - and we waited an age for additional bread to be provided. The additional bread even appeared on the bill! The team removed it when we challenged this.”

My meal was swimming in gravy and the steak was of poor quality. The vegetables were cold and undercooked.

Great place to stay, friendly staff and located well in the town centre.

Had a lovely evening with a christmas menu, food lovely, service excellent.

Went for a roast with son and partner. Not busy. The roast came with seasonal veg, red cabbage roast potatoes, carrots and parsnips (plural). Very small amount. No red cabbage and no seasonal veg. One carrot cut done in length and we all had a slither. Same for parsnip. Had to ask for the veg twice. Ordered mag and cheese, didn't arrive. I had veggie sausages. Warm food. We ate as we hadn't eaten since morning. My sons partner found a hair on her plate. Not worried about this per se, except the overall experience was by now a bit of a joke. We got the seasonal veg and max and cheese bit no red cabbage. Eventually told none left. So by the time the veg arrived we'd eaten the rest. Told the waitress each time. Poor lady kept going to see chef. In the end we were charged full price. Waitress apologised throughout. We mentioned this again so she went to get the manager. We could see chef peeking around the corner. Waitress knocked off 30%. No manager. Really didn't care about money. Problem is so many reviews are the same or similar. Why do you not change. The least we expected was the manager or chef to see us. Instead left poor Waitress to do their job.

The Wellington in Brecon is a great place to go for a meal. The food is delicious and well-presented, and the staff are very kind and attentive. The pies are full of flavor and the meat was tender and juicy. The mashed potatoes were also very good and they were a perfect complement to the pie. The chicken tikka with wild rice was outstanding 👌 The staff at The Wellington were also very kind and attentive. They made sure that we had everything we needed and they were always checking in on us to make sure that we were enjoying our meal. I would definitely recommend The Wellington to anyone looking for a good meal in Brecon. Here are some other things that I liked about The Wellington: * The atmosphere is very warm and inviting. * The restaurant is clean and well-kept. * The prices are reasonable. The experience was amazing, food was delicious. I loved the Sticky toffee pudding! Gavin took such good care of us, he was a delight!

Stayed for 2 nights (Sunday 10th & Monday 11th Nov 2024). Check-in was efficient and went to our room. Upon entering we were pleasantly surprised with the room, but were hit with a wall of heat that was obscene. We found the radiator to be on full, but with the window open so we turned the radiator down to 1 and went downstairs for dinner. Food and drink was reasonable, but on returning to the room, it was still like a furnace. Tried shutting the window but it was stuck in position and didn't fancy banging it around at almost midnight, so made it through the night with very little sleep due to the room being like a hot house and the noise coming in from the street below when traffic and service vehicles past below the window due to it being stuck open. Breakfast was excellent value for money and upon returning from a long day in the hills I managed to free the window up in the evening, and found out that the only settings the radiator had was fully on or fully off, which then made the room cold. Checked out at 9am at the end of our stay exhausted due heat in the room and the noise from traffic. Could be a great place, but unfortunately let itself down on room maintenance for us.☹️🤔🤬🥱

Gavin was a wonderful waiter. He gave fantastic recommendations and was such a pleasure to chat with. We truly enjoyed our experience for dinner.

I don’t normally leave bad reviews but was left fairly disappointed. The Sunday roast was quite underwhelming with a long wait time and seemed to be very overpriced for what I got with it… £16 for what I got in the photo. It could be me but was expecting a lot more

Very tired after a week travelling, stopped in for a lovely 3-course meal. Excellent service from Vicky!

Wow! If you like fish, have the sea bass. It's amazing. Husband had the mixed grill and considering he's extremely fussy he really enjoyed it. Very friendly staff especially Vicky, she's a real sweetheart. What's not to like about this place. Love it!

We stayed here for bed and breakfast while enjoying walking in the National Park. Rooms are spacious and clean, if nt a little dated. Friendly service from staff and a fabulous breakfast. A nice chilled atmosphere to the hotel. All reasonably priced, and we look forward to returning again.

Myself and 2 friends stayed for 2 nights (25/10, 26/10/24). I stayed in a twin room. There's an over bath shower. Hand and body wash is provided along with shampoo. There are coffee bags, 2 types of tea-bags, dairy milk. I take tea and coffee without milk so I suspect that no other type of milk is available, and there is no fridge to store it in should you purchase it outside The bathroom in particular was immaculate, The linen and general appearance of the room was very clean. I found that although I was at the front of the hotel, I wasn't disturbed by street noise or the bells of the church nearby, but I'm not a light sleeper. The Reception staff were welcoming and clearly explained hotel information. The housekeeping team were evidently conscientious. We did not have any food at the hotel, so I cannot rate that. However, the fact that we were unable to get a table for our first night may give some indication of the quality. Accessibility- there's no lift, so be prepared to carry luggage up two flights of curved stairs.

Very poor service, long wait between dishes . Asked for drinks never arrived no apologies. It was halloween . No decorations. .

Service was friendly and efficient. Food was lovely, although disappointed that no cranberry sauce available to go with the roast turkey!

The visit to the pud was excellent. All the staff made me feel very welcome and the food we had was delicious and all served hot. We will definitely be back.

What a great place amazing service from the whole team from the moment we arrived. The room was spotless and had a really comfortable bed. The breakfast was also very tasty and well presented. Had an evening meal there and was very impressed with the menu and service. The whole team of staff there seem to know exactly what great customer service is. Only downside is no parking onsite but loads of car parks in the area.

Great vegetarian food and and also gammon meal for my partner. Amazing service from the staff and Poric also! Definitely recommend!

You’re ok if you don’t ask for salad. A salad is a dish of lettuce, that’s it just lettuce. I asked if they could add anything to the salad, and was told the chef said no he’s not allowed to add anything extra. Very disappointed as the rest of the meal was ok but I don’t go out for a bowl of lettuce

Food on menu unavailable - didn’t actually exist Soup of the day was bland and inedible for human consumption Dirty knives & forks food residue . Men’s toilets stank of urine with actual buckets under the urinals. Mirrors were dirty with fly and spider webs on them Actually walked out - disgusting.

We had googled to see if dog friendly which it is, but I just asked to double check only to be what I felt was a smirk and hand gesture to a big sign which in fairness I'd walked past as it was to my side and I was concentrating on looking where to ask...then it was a blunt have you booked...which i hadnt...oh ill go and clean a table then....once we had decided we had sat a while waiting along with another family then saw a sign saying 'order at bar' so I said this to my husband and the other family said oh yes so up we got to order at bar same member of staff look at me and said do you want something to which I said yes to place our order...its table service was the response this even made the other gentleman raise his eyebrows...our food arrived...it tasted nice but for the money we paid it was terrible just a filled ciabatta on a wooden board no garnish at all...we would never recommend or return I'm afraid sorry...we felt that we were not made to feel welcome and overpriced

Stopped here on the advice of a local, just for tea and snack. We had a 'bar snack' of deep fried chicken in honey and blue cheese. Didn't sound like a usual combination, but was so lovely we had second helpings. If you get the chance, try some!

Come here for my anniversary, having looked at the menu it's mostly just your average pub grub, nothing special. The food is okay, nothing to be excited about yet is probably one of the most expensive pubs I've eaten at. Service took ages which just made the food seem that much more underwhelming especially for what you pay. You get a small portion that'll leave you hungry which works in their favour so you'll buy a dessert. If the colour Beige was a pub this would be it, just average with above average prices for small portions. Save your pennies, go somewhere else. (Even McDonald's is a better feed)

Had an amazing evening, the bar staff were very friendly and polite. Waitresses were lovely and helpful. The food looked and tasted delicious. Service was good drinks were done straight away and food wasnt long after. Will definitely be returning.

This is the second time of visiting early evening when items on the menu were unavailable. Lyla, server, was very polite and friendly but had to be reminded that not all the order was delivered. The gravy was like coloured water!

Efficient staff, good choice of food

Popped in here for some lunch today. Ordered 2 sandwiches. Wasn't overly busy. 35 mins later no sign of sandwiches so asked when they'd be ready. "7 minutes" (no apology), 15 mins later and still no sandwiches. Requested a refund and left (again no apology).

Worst experience we have ever had eating out. Couldn’t tell you if the food was any good as after waiting for 2 hours we gave up and got a refund. And that was after phoning ahead to see if they were busy (and told they weren’t).

If you like a pancake with your roast pork no crackling or apple sauce then yeah this is the place to go. Staff were friendly and helpful. Food very disappointing not a yorkshire putting but a pancake what was all that about. Food not much taste no crackling on or with the pork although it said so on the menu also no apple sauce. Disappointing to say the least. Won't be going there again.

2 night stay, comfy bed and room, staff were helpful and polite. Long wait time for food, no oatmilk available, after a 10 minute wait soya milk was provided. Disappointingly no fruit and yogurt available for breakfast, delivery did not arrive, although staff offered cooked alternative.

We often visit here when touring Brecon. A lovely place to sit and relax and enjoy drinks and food. Very friendly staff.

After walking all morning. We were looking forward to a good feed. Our first choice was fully booked. Got to say it couldn't have been any better than the fayre we were served in the Wellington. Fantastic food and a lovely pint. Staff were lovely.

Nice lunch, great service but... the gravy. Welsh people well for me anyway it is about the gravy.. very little served with the lunch on the plate. No gravy boat. I had to pay £2.50 for extra gravy which was about 50 ml in a tiny jug that was half full!! I have never heard of a Sunday roast where you have to pay extra for gravy!

Super friendly hotel with very comfy beds. The staff are very friendly and helpful. The cooked breakfast is excellent and not greasy. Would defo recommend and stay again. A great nights sleep.

Two friends and I were absolutely delighted with our three course lunch. What an excellent chef! Everything delicious, very fair pricing, and our waiter, Roberto, was charming and helpful as was another waiter whose name we didn't get. My friends who, unlike me, live locally will definitely be back as will I on my next visit from London

Tried to eat here twice over the last 4 days. Can't have breakfast, not guests (loads of empty tables), then Sunday lunch fully booked. Shame, the food looked good!

We were a party of six, myself my wife and four orthers. Mine and my wife's order given to another table .mening ours arrived very late so didn't eat with our party. Then gave us somebody else's order so had to return as incorrect. A lot of confused staff unable to see the mistake they made. 1hr and 45 minutes later order almost correct. Left there very disappointed and still hungry. When straight from there to greggs.

Awful service , turned away as the waitress said they were fully booked , walked outside booked online no problem and walked straight back in , watched them turn 5 different customers away saying bookings only . Food mediocre and drinks overpriced won’t be returning!

We like the Wellington because it's got the secure room for the bikes, staff are helpful and friendly, could do with biscuits in the room.

Lovely pub, dog friendly ,friendly staff serving delicious food.First time trying the mon-fri set lunch menu, Been many times eating off the main menu, must say food quality and quantity were of set lunch lived up to our expectations .

Food was cooked perfectly and well present, came out quick much thanks and well done too the chief on shift Ryan, front of house staff were very friendly especially out server William will definitely be coming back and highly recommend coming too the Wellington hotel

Not enough staff on shift. Had to chase up drinks order at the bar after not appearing for almost an hour. Food was very overcooked and almost inedible. No check back on table as staff were rushed off their feet. Very disappointed.
