The Three Horseshoes Inn

Talybont-on-Usk, Powys, <20£
17/12/2018: The food was outstanding. This restaurant and pub is not on many people's radar with most people heading to better known destinations, but if you can stop and get off the A40 to find The Three Horseshoes, then you will not be disappointed. Each course was delicious and beautifully presented. The young chefs are already award winners and I think that we will be seeing more of them soon. Every dish was full of flavour whether simple or complex. The wine list was really economical, but each one chosen with care and the wines well kept. The service was very efficient, attentive, and not pompous. It is an honest well run restaurant and pub, comfortable and welcoming with food that is out of the top draw. Well done to the owner, staff and chefs. I know that you will be successful and that we will be back.
17/12/2018: All the courses were beautifully presented and very tasty with lovely flavours. There was a great 'amuse guelle' to start and there was no disappointment with the following courses. All were worth returning for but we didn't have time.

The Old White Horse Inn

Tawe-Uchaf, Powys
18/12/2018: We booked the Old White Horse for a Scout Leader's Christmas meal last night, Monday December 17th at 7:00pm.. It was very busy so our table for eight was in the bar. This was fine as it is a lovely room with log fire etc. The table hadn't been laid for a Christmas meal and we had to ask for more cuttery which was placed in a glass. We had pre-booked our meals and so were very disappointed when at eight o'clock we hadn't received our starters. The table next to ours had their starters and so I asked how long food would be. The waitress said they were sorry but they were really busy. The table next to us then had their mains and by now I was just thinking it might be better to just leave. Our starters arrived after eight but were lovely. We then had to wait over an hour for our mains. The meat was cold and tough and the roast potatoes were cold and soggy. One of our party had ordered from the main menu and his food didn't arrive until most of us had finished our mains. I did complain to the waitress about the wait and was told it was because they were so busy. I replied that they shouldn't have taken so many bookings.
17/12/2018: I was given the responsibility of arranging a meal for my Fiancée and her parents. I was given the daunting task of looking at lots of different places that we hadn’t been to but decided upon booking at the Old White Horse Inn because from the first point of contact the staff were very helpful.

St John's Place

Hay, Powys
04/11/2018: Really lovely meal. Incredible food. We shared small tapas style plates. Service was very good, welcoming.
30/10/2018: We ate here with friends. The restaurant has changed its booking policy, and reservations are only available for groups of 6 or more. We arrived at 5 for drinks and small plates and were told we needed to vacate by 7 for a reserved table. For those who don't want to feel pressurized this wasn't great (even though 2 hours is plenty of time).

08/11/2018: A wonderful stay at the Gwesty Cymru, a 50th birthday treat from my wife. We stayed in the white room, which is at the top of the hotel with a great view of the sea, many stairs to climb! But well worth the climb.

New Inn

Bwlch, Powys
14/12/2018: A group of about eight went to the New Inn for their Christmas menu (See end of review), it’s also a CAMRA pub of the year for Brecon and South East Wales, and so the real ale was excellent.
28/11/2018: Food was simply perfect, great atmosphere, welcoming staff and a warm fire. Couldn't be any better If they tried.

Aberaeron, Ceredigion, <20£
18/12/2018: Have had a property in Aberaeron for over 50 years and the Harbourmaster has been a good place to eat and drink at all times of the various seasons. Naturally in the Summer months there is a big influx of people visiting, so it pays tpo book well in advance to get your table. Good steaks and varied menu.
16/12/2018: We decided to visit whilst enjoying a few nights away in October. Firstly, you need to book...and even if you have to wait for a table it will definitely be worth it. Friendly staff, lovely atmosphere and incredibly tasty, well presented food. Ardderchog, diolch o galon.

The Horse and Jockey Inn

Knighton, Powys
26/11/2018: Great open fire in the snug bar. Food in restaurant was good quality. Service great. Pool table in main bar. Best pub we found in Knighton.
20/11/2018: This was our second visit and were again made to feel very welcome. So much so that we will now (hopefully) become ‘locals’. So nice to have a fab pub with top quality food and friendliness on your doorstep - a deciding factor in us buying a home in Knighton. Thank you!

Tafarn Dwynant

Machynlleth, Powys
22/11/2018: We've walked past many times and never given it a second thought, but we had a recommendation from the lovely Italian lady working in Idris Stores to give it a try.
07/10/2018: It was pure chance that we found this place. Me and two colleagues had traveled about three hours to mid wales for providing ambulance cover for rally GB overnight and during the day for the dyfi forest stages. When we finally arrived we asked security if there was somewhere for food near by and they directed us to this little pub down the road. When we arrived at the pub it was almost 2200 so we figured our chances would be slim. We asked the barmaid if there was any chance of food and she told us that she didn’t think so but would check. Sadly after checking we were told that it wouldn’t be possible. However the chef then came over and saw us and he offered us a couple of items on the menu that were hot meals. While he wasn’t able to serve the full meals he managed to single handidly cook the most amazing meals that me and my colleagues had the luck of experiencing.
