Called in for a light lunch on a day out to Castle Douglas, had our dogs with us so looked for a dog friendly place. The staff were very welcoming and friendly and immediately offered our dogs a bowl of water as it was a warm day. The food was good cafe food, no frills but quick, tasty and well cooked. The place is very pleasant inside, well decorated (loved the mad hatter drawings and the dog bags) and surprisingly spacious and comfortable. If we are ever in that part of the world again we will definitely return.

This hotel was a great last minute booking my friends and I made recently. Our room was spacious and spotlessly clean. Breakfast was lovely and all the staff we met were friendly and helpful. Especially Dawn and Jenny ( I think) who were on reception on Sunday 11/8. Both were super sweet and funny. We will definitely be back

The really friendly and hospitable staff set the bright tone for this excellent meal. We’d both eaten a lot of meat and fish so opted for the pesto and tomato gnocchi dish. The portion size was larger than expected and the pesto sauce was so sumptuous and fresh. I loved the fresh tomatoes dotted in the dish as well as the chilli flakes. We had gin spritz and oh my goodness, I want to recreate them at home. I could’ve drank the dry gin with apricot and grapefruit spritzer all night. These were priced at £7.25 each which I thought was reasonable given the standard of the restaurant. The gnocchi was £18 so at the upper end of the places we’d eaten at on our trip, especially for a vegetarian dish. However, it was really well cooked, flavoursome and just what we needed. The food was delivered very quickly to our table and our waiter was very friendly. We didn’t have room for pudding but the list looked great. We had the same mains and 2 gin spritz’s each which came to a total of just over £70. I personally think this restaurant is worth the money but it’s not a cheap dinner date. I would go back.

How this hotel has the ratings it has is beyond my understanding. Arrived to book in and met with a dark, damp smelling entrance. One light on in the bar area where a very unhappy employee was clearing up from previous staff (allegedly the managers!) shift. Advised that none of the hotel rooms had been prepared and she needed time to do so. We were unable to get food at the hotel as there was nothing. Info on site says meals available. Room was freezing cold, blinds failed, windows drafty, had to ask for towels for shower. Excuse for a bed was one of the most uncomfortable I've ever experienced. The wooden frame squeaked even when moving the quilt!! We had booked for 3 nights which we cut short. Breakfast was an absolute joke, make your own tea and toast with out of date milk, and a jar of cheap jam. An experience not for repeating!

Distinctly Average - Could do a lot better. Second time this week. Was there on Wednesday and again on Saturday. Wednesday was a good experience but Saturday we were met with the fire alarm going off. Not a good start. Service at first was good but then dropped off as the evening went on. Was left for 20 minutes waiting for a drinks order and eventually had to go to the bar to get attention and found 3 members of staff chatting. The food was extremely average. Goat cheese starter was over cooked on the outside and frozen on the inside. Main courses were all over done with the exception of the goulash . The "golden batter" was more a deep dark brown than anything and the chicken dishes were all dry and overcooked. The chicken burger was cremated and extremely dry but the bun and salsa was extremely stodgy. Presentation on Wednesday was really good but our meals on Saturday reminded us of school dinners extremely poor. basically thrown on a plate. All in all not a very good experience but the potential is there , as demonstrated on Wednesday. A little bit of extra time in preparation and presentation would help along with some new oil. All in all not good value for the money paid.

Specifically returned here for a 2nd visit as the 1st visit had been so good! We found this place by accident around 3 weeks ago & were pleasantly surprised. The food was fantastic and the coffee is the best we've found in Ayrshire! And all very reasonably priced! Give it a go. I guarantee you won't be disappointed!

Description on website is totally different to the experience we had. The manager was not in residence, there was no proper cook/chef so there was no food being served, not to speak I'll of Donnie who was left in charge as he was so helpful and friendly but the breakfast he cooked was inedible. Room not up to much shower had absolutely no pressure was just a trickle. We booked in for 4 days left after 2. If manager knew this was going to be how our stay was going to be he should have cancelled as we expected a bed and breakfast that served food this was just a pub with rooms. I would never recommend this place to anyone

As always, great coffee with multiple options to suit all, including lactose free milk. The menu has so much to offer, I'd recommend the nacho's, a personal favourite. A huge cakes selection to go with all the coffee's on offer. Most importantly of all, the friendly & supportive staff, truly have become friends over the years.

Stopped by here on the way home. The place was empty but the kids corner was a bonus for us and kept our 3 yr old son happy! Menu doesn't have much choice but the food was delicious! We had chicken burger and an old Smokey burger. No complaints! Staff and punters were friendly an we will definitely be back again. I dont know why there wasn't more publicity about this place as it defo needs it. Come here if u like no no fuss good pub grub and a place for the kids to play.

Had afternoon Tea today(Sunday). The view is stunning, overlooking the golf course and the Forth. We had to wait around 10 minutes and received 4 types of sandwiches, a plain scone and fruit scone and a variety of cakes. The scones were some of the best I’ve ever had- warm from the oven, the cakes were light. We received a bottle of water and large pot of tea but had to ask for glasses. The toilets were a bit more dated than the restaurant but clean

Having been coming to Comrie for around three years now and staying in a family-owned caravan I always like to take a walk down the Main Street and venture into the cafe and Melville restaurant which is part of the Royale Hotel. I love the feel and score of the Melville but unfortunately that’s three dodgy meals the last three times we visited. Previously had a burger which tasted like it had been boiled (weird eh?), then had the best tasting risotto but unfortunately the risotto wasn’t cooked. My most recent visit was some salads…absolutely delicious tasting but one of them seemed to have a good number of what appeared to be dark dog hairs in it. I don’t own dogs and none of my family have dark hair. I spoke to the member of staff in the bar and showed him the issue. He apologised and offered a fresh dish and to take the meal from our bill, he was very nice and handled things well. We were offered a complimentary dessert which was great. One person opted for dessert and mid-eating they discovered yet another dark hair. Took this dessert back and showed the staff member again. Really disappointing and disgusting that this happened. Twice. Bar staff great but not so impressed with the lady who was at reception. I have spoken with her a few times now to book tables etc and find her to be snappy/short. And heard her tell off someone who asked for help as she was too busy. And sorry to have another moan but I really don’t like the new pool table, arcade machine and juke box. Trying to eat your dinner and chat when there’s a couple playing pool and rattling balls around a pool table is not how I want to spend my evening. Don’t think this is the best idea. I really want to love the Melville but I’ve found it disappointing for a while now….
