Such a disappointment …..think they must have different chefs on different days. I had lunch on Tuesday , scallops with a delicious sauce and a light cheese dressing and honeycomb snap which was so delicious I went back the next day. Ordered same dish …..padded out with some form of very dry potatoes, no snap and sauce almost totally absent. Very dry and mediocre lunch…..won’t be returning.

As non-residents in the hotel, we were pleased to be able to get a table at short notice. The menu was good and we had an enjoyable dinner, which was adapted without fuss for a coeliac guest. The staff were so friendly, helpful and fun - we cannot thank Alison enough for making our first Hebridean meal a memorable and happy occasion.

3 of us ordered fish and chips. At £19 I expected a delicious meal esp as fresh fish straight from the harbour was what was promised! The fish was so bony and the silver skin was still present on the haddock made this inedible. Chips were so hard I cut my mouth on a chip. Overall poor experience the restaurant was also extremely cold and lacked any atmosphere at all.

Stayed for 2 nights at The Castlebay Hotel and enjoyed a lovely dinner here on the first night. Loved the scallops and black pudding starter followed by Lasagne (garlic bread slightly over done but still nice). Finished with the biscoff biscuit cheesecake which was delicious. Staff were friendly and welcoming and overall really enjoyed my stay and dinner and breakfast. I would visit again and recommend to others.

We had an excellent meal here. The food tasted home cooked, as in the best that someone would cook at home - that’s a compliment. The dining room is old style with dark wood furniture, big menu books, historic photos on the walls. The service by young waitresses was very good. Fresh fish, scallops, lasagne …. Nice view of harbour/ferry

Super food in quaint surroundings with superb view of the castle and bay. The Hotel restaurant was clean but a little tired maybe, but in no way would this deter me from eating here. Staff were polite and helpful and even though it was quite busy, we did not have to wait long for our food which was well presented and of good quality. Would recommend.

Although there are very limited options for evening dining on Barra this is still one to be missed. On arrival we were taken through to what appeared to be more of a repurposed function room than a dining room and we were placed in between tables that had been set for breakfast the next morning. We were then given a menu which was coated in mould at the corners – which didn’t quite get the appetite going. Although pricing is understandably higher than the mainland we felt it was still a bit steep (I.e. fish pie: 21.95, lamb hotpot 18.95 etc)I ordered the butternut squash and lentil puff pastry Wellington which sounded like a good vegetarian option. When it arrived it was instead a filo pastry parcel and was unfortunately very very cold. This was, after some apologies, replaced by an equally cold parcel which was then replaced. By this time my partner had finished his meal. The young staff were very polite and friendly. My partner's chips were tasty and pie was nice. The staff also took my main meal off the bill. Overall not a dining experience we would recommend to other guests.

I had seen a recommendation for the restaurant serving gluten free. We had a lovely meal, I had a lovely dinner of salmon. There wasn't an extensive gluten free menu, but it was clearly marked and staff had knowledge, which makes it a food find, and the food tasted great and the portion size was generous. Nice atmosphere with friendly staff and we enjoyed our evening.

Food was overpriced and fairly ordinary. We just had a main course and left the awkward vibe. Utilitarian furnishings & decor not worthy of the fabulous view. No atmosphere at all, caused mostly by ludicrous plastic screens around tables, even though tables were so far apart we could hear no other conversation. We know it’s important but the feeling of isolation was awful (one unfortunate elderly couple were jammed in a corner surrounded by 2 walls, 1 plastic screen and another screen blocking them from the kitchen entrance!) Screens on other tables blocked the lovely view. Some sort of bonkers one-way system for serving staff and the four of them wandered around in total confusion – into the kitchen carrying nothing and back out from a different door still carrying nothing, entertaining but painful to watch! 17 restaurant dinners during our lengthy trip and just 1 other single plastic screen encountered in Plockton…

Booked here for dinner during our stay in Barra. I had been in contact prior to our visit regarding car parking and Maggs was prompt and positive in her replies. We had a lovely evening in the restaurant, fortunate to get a good view which was enhanced by great food and excellent, efficient service provided by Maggs and her team. Our food was tasty and plentiful, we had lasagne/ steak and ale pie, followed by apple crumble and a toffee sundae- the latter was an absolute wow. Young staff were friendly and quite attentive. Nice surroundings and some great views over the bay. Food was disappointing though - the bruschetta was a little soggy, and the tomato topping appeared to have been cooked... just odd. My main course vegetarian wellington was rather dry, as were the accompanying vegetables, they could have done with a bit of butter on them or something. I probably wouldn't eat here again.

The hotel is a nice old building with a commanding view out over the harbour to the islands beyond. The restaurant is nice but decor is a bit dated. Ate in winter so not many guests. The background music (recorded country and western music) was loud whcih detracted from the experience. No Wifi or mobile signal.Food was good but the advertised crusty rolls (accompanying soup) were substitued by slices of brown bread, with no explanation. Lasagna was good, very substantial portion, but the top was a bit dried out. However, overall it was a good experience. The menu has a good range of fresh fish and seafood, locally sourced. Local lamb is also available.

We spent our first night's dinner on 08/29/19 at Castlebay Hotel restaurant. We were given a table front & center for a 6:00 reservation, but with a caveat--that we would vacate the table before 8:00 for another reservation. We said no problem. Our server was the same person who sat us [sorry, should have got a name...]. Service was slow, food portions were more than adequate & was quite tasty, and our server never checked back with us after the food was served. We sat, waiting for our check, for some time after finishing our meal. At approximately 7:40 pm, the server arrived announcing rudely that we were told we needed to leave before 8:00. We told her we were waiting for our check. She left; we waited....and waited. Finally, I left the table, leaving my husband to deal with the server & check. He finally came out to the reception area to pay the check. Although not an ideal experience, it did not ruin our few days in Barra, the land of my ancestry. I may not be a local, but my roots are here. Please don't treat us visitors poorly.

We had dinner there on a couple of nights in September. The view of the harbour from the diningroom is stunning and the food was good - but the portion sizes were enormous and we all felt bad that we had left so much on our plates. The young waitresses seemed reluctant to serve us smaller portions, which was a shame. Apparently the guideline is "enough to satisfy the appetite of somebody who has been out trekking all day". This didn't remotely describe us - but that wasn't the fault of the Castlebay Hotel. And we appreciated the fact that they held dinner for us when our arrival was significantly delayed by problems with the ferry from Oban.

This was our last night on Barra, and we specifically chose somewhere that was meant to be excellent for our final night - unfortunately, Castle Bay Hotel Restaurant was simply not up to scratch. The servers, all being reasonably young, could not offer any knowledge about the local gins or the wine on the menu. Basic training in serving etiquette, such as allowing a taste of the wine (rather than dropping the bottle on the table and walking away without a word) would be beneficial. We waited an exceptional length of time for our starters to arrive, and when my 'starter' did arrive, it was actually my main. We were understanding, mistakes happen - however, after we finished our starters, our mains were brought out, and it quickly became apparent that my main had sat under the heating lamp for the past 20 minutes until we were ready for it. The mashed potato had dried out completely, and the salmon had developed a rubber texture. When I spoke to the waitress, her response was reasonable, i.e. she removed it from the bill, but it was a disappointing last night on the island. The views from the restaurant are admittedly excellent, however the decor hasn't been touched since the 70s, so it feels rather dated and aged inside.Overall, an extremely disappointing night; we would not recommend this restaurant.

Worst meal I've ever had. Unfortunately the choices to eat out in Barra for evening meals are pretty limited so they have a target market there. £36 for 2 fish and chips, pint of lager and a soda water and lime. Overpriced and poor quality. While waiting to pay bill the customer in front had been overcharged in his bill and there was a huge debate going on about it. Got fed up waiting to comment on meal so left money and departed. Got micro wave meal out the co-op next night better quality and value.

We did not stay at the hotel ,just went in (2) nights for our evening meal,we found the staff very friendly and interested talking about our visit, the meals were of a very good standard, not cheap but you get what you pay for,if we return to Barra in the future would have no hesitation in going for our meals there again

We stayed at the hotel and I must say the best thing going for them and the restaurant is the staff. They are friendly (sometimes just funny to talk to) who made great suggestions and helped us. Like we were told what "not to order" and who does that?? But the lamb pie was excellent and the fish pie was exactly what we were told- very fishy tasting!

Had dinner here twice. Efficient and friendly service in a clean airy dining room with stunning views over the ferry terminal and bay to Vatersay and beyond.Food was well prepared and very tasty using mostly local produce. Difficult to fault it - just too much of it!!

Wasn't blown away by the food. I had langoustines to start which were fine but quite small and not particularly meaty. I ordered the salmon steak for main. Was advertised with spring onion mash but unfortunately no spring onion in sight! The mash and the salmon were quite dry with no sauce or anything. Just not particularly enjoyable. To be completely honest wasn't particularly blown away by the service either. Wouldn't go back and wish we had gone elsewhere. It is however conveniently located very close to the ferry.

We had two decent meals here served by very friendly staff. The cockles and fish of the day in garlic butter are to be recommended.

We were a group of 14, and the staff managed well. Friendly service, no delays and everyone got what they ordered. I heard no complaints about the food and mine was excellent.

My mum and I stayed a night at the Castlebay Hotel. Our evening meal and breakfast were delicious and the staff were very friendly and helpful. I'd definitely recommend this hotel.

Very welcoming friendly staff, limited range of dishes but good all the same. There is a waiting room area with a warm fire blazing away. The restaurant is at the front with views over the bay which also means it can be a tad cold in comparison with the waiting room area. Service is good, and portions are good and healthy. There is an adjoining bar which is very popular with the Barra residents, and if you are lucky there may be a local band playing. The hotel itself is undergoing a major refit (Dec 2016)

I had a beautiful room which was more like a suite. Bubble bath. Great view of the castle. We were working later than the kitchen was open but they were happy for us to pre order dinner for getting there 15 mins after last service. The food was incredible. I had the scallops and the fish and chips. Very big portions and very good. Would definitely stay and eat here again.

This is a smart place that is worth a visit for a meal. Service is very good and the food good too. There is not a huge range and not a great deal of local produce (we were off season though) but the local salmon was lovely. It is a hotel so we did find it rather pricy compared with other places near by.

The food at the Castlebay Hotel restaurant was both fresh and delicious. The cockles and scallops we had were caught that day and the service was great. We enjoyed the view of the bay and watched the ferry come in as we ate. Definitely eat here.

We had lovely food of sea-bass and langoustines, staff friendly and helpful. It was not busy, which was surprising as the hotel was full. Lovely views over the bay.

We had booked 3 nights stay here but were a day late arriving as our ferry was cancelled, owing to fog. A 7 unit site with 2 showers with a toilet in the same room [En-suite]. One of the rooms was, imo, suitable for disabled guests. The facilities were clean with no extra charge for the showers. As the area was "remote" from the main site - hundred yards away and out of sight of the main site - access through the gate, into the shower/toilet block and chemical disposal point was by padlock code or Door Key Code. It worked and probably necessary as adjacent to the main road but slightly annoying. Good water supply and Grey water runoff easily accessed. The most expensive site we used in our holiday through the Outer Hebrides but West Harris Trust is a Community Charity so any profits presumably channelled back into Community Projects

We have just enjoyed a stunning meal at Number 30. Beautiful seafood chowder, then we shared the cod & seabass main dishes, very differently prepared, both delicious. We couldn’t resist the cranachan & pannacotta desserts, deliciously light & yummy. All in a peaceful airy room, with friendly attentive service.

To dull & boring HATE IT WHEN IT GETS OVERCROWDED WITH PEOPLE. FEELS LIKE AN OVEN. SHOULD PUT RESTRICTIONS IN PLACE TO LIMIT AMOUNT OF PEOPLE THAT GO UPSTAIRS TO THAT CAFÉ. SHOULD MAKE PEOPLE PAY TO ENTER THAT PLACE AT THE FRONT DOOR 🚪 INCLUDING TOURISTS TOO
