What a great wee find on the way from the boat at Cairnryan to Dumfries. We stopped at the Bothy and had some amazing burgers. Flame grilled lamb and beef. Really tasty. The service was great, the set up was great and the place was immaculate. Definitely much better than some service station toot! We visited the gift shop too and some really beautiful things.

Bought two so called Chinese chicken. Contained two small strips of green pepper covered in some unknown sauce. If this is classed as Chinese think again. Save your money and buy a proper Chinese meal.

Very mixed experiences in this cafe. We have been a few times and it is ok if you know what to choose. The service can be very slow, but today was fine. Staff are always charming. We normally share a Macaroni cheese as portions are VERY LARGE and add their salad and their chips. Today for a change we chose the chicken with bruschetta and a sort of salad which was very sweet! The chicken was tasteless....like eating cardboard. I chose the mezze which came with enough Tortilla and pitta bread for 5 people! Also MASSES of olives and sundried tomatoes. The hummus and cous cous were ok., but the beetroot was undercooked...very hard.If we go again we will stick with the Macaroni and salad.A big bad point for us is the noise when the place is busy. Every sound is magnified as the acoustics are really bad. It needs some soft furnishings to muffle the echo.

Great cafe here, the staff are extremely polite which is always a plus, the breakfast rolls are really good. We always stop here on the way home to buy their steak pies and mince rounds which are wonderful, even though they are a little more expensive than some, we feel it is well worth it, having tried many others in the area. They also do special deals on various days of the week, on Wednesday it was 7 butchery items for £20.

Excellent farm shop. Big range of produce and lovely food. Some of the usual standard tat to pad it out which is always a wee bit of a disappointment. This would have been a four or five out of five start review if it hadn’t been for the surly service at the till. Checkout woman needs to go on a training course in basic customer service. Girls at the pound shop near me have better manners.

We have eaten here a number of times, but the last two have been disappointing. Yesterday we arrived around 14.30 and ordered (2) the steak pie lunch, 20 minutes later the food arrived, the plate was very hot, the food was so hot you couldnt eat it, the peas/carrots looked strange, over microwaved ?? or too long under heat lamp??, husband says they were rubbery, I didnt eat mine. The steak pie was full of tasty, large pieces of meat, the best part of the meal and the only item I ate. Effectively I paid over £10 for a steak pie. I should have taken a photo. When paying I was asked if everything was ok I replied no, the vegetables were strange as above, I said left them and my plate would show what I referred to, the cashier spoke with a colleague about it, neither seemed too concerned and I was charged the full price. We probably wont be eating here again.

We've never eaten at the cafe inside so can't comment on that but we do regularly have lunch at the outdoor, dog friendly bothy. We love the burgers and we also love the 'steak, cattle & roll' (freshly cooked so you have to wait a few minutes). Have them on their own or as a meal deal with chips and a drink. We normally find that one meal deal and one item on it's own is enough for us for lunch. If it's wet weather there's a covered area to sit under and if it's dry we sit at one of the picnic tables. Dogs are allowed at the Bothy so it's very handy if we want to stop whilst out and about with our two.

We went for breakfast. Please sort out your scrambled egg as sometimes it looks like it’s been a fried egg chopped up other than that the breakfast is lovely. The staff are very friendly and helpful but you really do need to sort out the cleanliness as it’s pretty dirty and the highchairs for the little ones don’t even look like they get cleaned. I carry anti bacterial wipes and have to clean the table/highchair etc before we sit down.

Unfortunately, I did not have a good experience here. I arrived to have breakfast as I'd heard good things. I told the waiter I was gluten free (coeliac disease) and they said the eggs benedict sauce has barley in, so not suitable. I asked about the veggie breakfast, and they said it should be fine. I switched the tattie scone for another egg, and asked about the veggie sausages. The waiter said he was pretty sure they're gluten free but that he'd check. The food arrived, and I again asked the waiter to check if the sausages were gluten free, since he hadn't confirmed. I heard him speak to the chef, who said yes, they're definitely gluten free. Well, they were not. I spent several hours afterwards vomiting and felt awful all the next day, loads of stomach issue, cramping etc. Spoke to the manager, who checked it out, and said that the chef had "misread the packaging" and was very apologetic. I'm not really sure how it's possible to misread the word "wheat" so I'm pretty sure he didn't bother checking at all. I fell like often coeliac disease isn't taken seriously since I'm unlikely to actually die on the premises. Makes me worried for anyone with life threatening allergies eating here.

Arrived at approximately 13.30 on a Tuesday afternoon, the restaurant was full to capacity but we were seated within 5 minutes. The member of staff who took our order was polite and very efficient. When our meal arrived, I was disappointed with the lamb burger. Presentation was very basic, 3 slices of gherkin and a miniscule amount of limp lettuce accompanied the burger. My wife had chosen a chicken toastie which arrived barely toasted. The bacon, brie and cranberry toastie my daughter had ordered was awful. The bacon was extremely fatty and barely cooked the bread was hardly toasted at all. Definitely not the best meal we have had at Kilnford, the quality of cooking seems to have deteriorated. My personal view is that the order was rushed because the place was very busy. Will think twice about returning for a meal.

Decided to go in for lunch with my mum as we have been before and always enjoy it. We were lucky to get a table as we expected it to be busy with all the traffic there was on the roads that day. We were greeted as soon as we walked in and both ended up having the specials (beef olives and fish and chips). The food was restaurant quality, which you wouldn't necessarily expect for a "farm shop." They use local produce (I'm assuming from the butcher's area of the shop and it was so difficult to choose what to have! Really happy with our food and the staff were super friendly and had a chat and giggle with us when serving us. I'll always head back for lunch when I'm out and about in Dumfries. Would rather this than head to the town centre anywhere. Hoping we can get time to head back soon!

It was our first visit and we were not disappointed. We had a delicious, well cooked, small breakfast each. Then we visited the butchery department. It was superb - all the meat was fresh and laid out so choices could be made. The butcher who served us knew exactly what we were asking for, packaged all our purchases ready for the freezer and we enjoyed the banter with him. Even though it was busy we didn't feel rushed. We have just cooked and eaten the most delicious, tender, Galloway beef, sirloin, quick fried steaks. We'll certainly be back.

1225 we arrived on a Tuesday and I ran in to check there was a table as my disabled father was in the car. A waiter showed me a suitable table by the window and we all piled in (5 of us) 1240 we ordered to be told first they had run out of macaroni and then also out of chicken goujons. 1315 the two kids meals arrived with an over cooked burger and some chips (we also ordered coleslaw which didn’t arrive) 1330 and our food hadn’t arrived (it was busy) 1345 I asked our waiter who said he would go and check but he never came back and he avoided our table for the rest of the visit… 1350 I walked to the till to ask about our food and another waiter returned to say there had been a glitch in the system and our food order hadn’t gone through! (The kids got theirs though) My dad is diabetic which I mentioned and he advised he would get his food immediately (a simple white bread ham sandwich) This arrived on slightly stale granary bread but he had to eat by this point…. The other 2 meals (BLT and lentil soup with a toastie) then arrived. After a few mouthfuls I realised my soup was mushroom not lentil.. We did have a very apologetic waiter offering rounds of drinks but the fact was that a family catch-up had the children eating almost an hour before the adults and the incorrect food coming to us. In paying the bill I mentioned that my soup had been mushroom to which the girl replied “oh yes we ran out of lentil”. Just as well I wasn’t allergic to mushrooms.. My mum is a frequent visitor here both to eat and the farm shop but even she won’t be returning in a hurry No mention was made at any time of them being busy therefore things may take a bit longer and not once did anyone come to check we had our food/everything was ok

Olives...check. warm pitta bread...check. cous cous..check. No beetroot, no feta, no sundried tomatoes, no lemon hummus. Instead...sweet chilli hummus like you can buy in tesco. Ordinary mixed salad...lettuce leaves, red onions, normal tomatoes and peppers. Plus a wrap...which I didn't want or need. If you have changed the menu to this, then that is a real shame. If you had run out of the items required to make it, then I think you should have said. Its not what was advertised and was still charged at the full price . I had the trout which was plopped on a bed of a few salad leaves with an apple and celery salad which was more mayonnaise than apple or celery. To top it off there was a huge bit of plastic packaging underneath the fish. Ate the few pieces which weren’t drowning in mayo but left hungry and very disappointed.

.... as you'll end up buying way more than you had anticipated. The Belted Galloway beef is home-reared and amazing, Blackface Lamb is wonderful and their own Duroc pigs make some seriously tasty home-cured bacon.

It was nearly 3 years ago when we were last passing Dumfries and found Kilnford, this time we were heading North and were circling Dumfries at Lunchtime, trying to remember which roundabout they are on. Every roundabout seems to have its own garden centre/country store/farmshop advertised.

This farm shop has the WOW factor. Lovely setting and buildings are designed very attractively. On a sunny day you can eat outside.

We'd ordered meat from here for a family BBQ so had lunch when we went to pick it up - it was lovely. I had lentil soup and a cheese scone - both delicious.

Located just off the Dumfries bypass, across from the ambulance entrance to the new infirmary. A fairly sprawling farm type property, with tastefully renovated stone farm buildings and adequate free parking. The outfit offers an excellent butcher shop (free delivery throughout the UK advertised), a small farm produce section, a craft beer and wine selection, a restaurant, and of course, a gift store. The cafeteria style eatery offers a limited selection of soft drinks, wine and beer, cold sandwiches, freshly made soup, and a selection of in house prepared local farm foods, including salads, steak burgers, smoked trout, lamb, “Beltie” beef, pork, grilled bacon baps etc., Sunday roasts on Sunday, and a limited choice of desserts. There are some options for vegans and vegetarians. Our group went on Sunday, and ordered a wide selection, including burger, trout, roast beef, steak on a bun and roast pork. There was a fairly long wait at the till to pay for it, but the food was delivered to our table shortly after. All the food received very positive reviews, except for the boiled neeps (undercooked) and cauliflower (overcooked), and both vegetables stone cold. The place is obviously very popular for Sunday lunch, because it was packed with mostly local diners, which probably explains the congestion at the till. On the whole, really good food, and very reasonably priced for what you get. Expect to pay about 10 to 15 pounds per person, including a drink and coffee or dessert. There is also a tasty looking breakfast menu advertised, might have to go back for that next time in town! I bought some items at the butcher/deli to eat on the train the next day.....A sausage roll, which was great, a pretty dandy Scotch pie, and some Haggis slices. The haggis was stale, dry and nasty, so I threw it out of the window in an effort to humanely reduce the fox population.

Stumbled across here for lunch as everything in Dumfries seemed to be closed on Bank holiday Monday! Nice choice on menu, reasonable priced and friendly staff, however we had to ask three times for our tables to be cleaned and seemed a little unorganised. We had lunch all special on the hot plate although the burgers did smell amazing, we then had coffee and cake, by the time the coffee arrived the cake was gone!

This restaurant is part of Smiths hotel at Gretna Green. We were in the final days of our holiday in Scotland and wanted to have a special meal. We were staying at the hotel and saw this had good reviews. Well it didn’t disappoint. It was good that you could pick and mix from the a la carte menu and the bar menu. Every course was very good. Because we had courses from both menus I didn’t think it was too expensive. The service was good although it was very busy with other events going on. The staff were kept busy but were still attentive to our needs. Would recommend if you want something special or just for an evening meal.

A super bed and breakfast with a lovely vegan curry and home baked ecclefechan tart in the bar which had an open fire. Steve and Mary looked after us like a mum and a big brother. Could not do enough for us including a very welcome lift to and from hoddom Bridge as we were walking the annandale way. And a packed lunch to order. Will recommend to all, especially walkers.

We ate here and finished our meal, the waitress cleared away and we decided we'd have another round of drinks before leaving. We waited 5, 10 minutes and the waitress never came back. I went in search of someone but couldn't find our waitress. I didn't like to open the doors to the kitchen. We waited another 5 minutes and my wife said 'this is ridiculous' and went off in pursuit. She found our waitress in the bar (was she watching TV, did she fancy the barman?) and asked if we could get some service. The waitress said 'the restaurant is closed', as if we were being unreasonable in expecting to be served a round of drinks. No, the restaurant isn't closed if you've still got people sitting at a table you're serving and you haven't asked them if they want a dessert or offered them the bill but simply buggered off. So we said OK, can we just pay the bill. Which we did, and obviously didn't leave tip. We won't be going back.

A beautiful grand building in a wonderful setting. It was very quiet but the service and food were excellent. Not cheap but definitely worth it for a special occasion.
