We always used to love visiting the Mount Stewart with our dog for food & drinks. When we booked recently for an evening meal we were told we could only eat outside due to the bar having been refurbished. As it was a cool evening it would not have been possible to enjoy hot food there, so sadly we had to cancel and go elsewhere in the village. Having looked into the bar it seems almost all the seating is now at high tables, which is not suitable for many people to access - sadly the previous welcoming comfortable and cosy ambience of the bar seems to have been lost in this update.

My friend and I came out for lunch today. We do this perhaps 2,3,4 times a year for a treat as we like it here. My friend had a sirloin (well done) and I had a fillet (rare). Mine was fine but my friend struggled with hers. It was very fatty and grisly and in parts not cooked to her liking. Blonde waitress who was attending to us failed to offer us a wine list at time of ordering. When she came to take the plates away she was told about the sirloin, how it wasn’t up to standard and could she put it in a doggy bag as it wasn’t very nice. She said she’d advise the chef. Two minutes later she appeared with the bill, no deductions for the grisly sirloin or apologies from the chef. We won’t be back.

Service absolutley horrendous. Waited at table 10 minutes, then had to get up and go to find a waiter to get a drink. Asked for a bottle of red wine to find out 5 minutes later they never had that one. Asked for another choice, then waited another 5 minutes to find out they never had that. Starters were poor. Mains were poor. Dessert ok, but expensive. Excuses were manager was off and understaffed. To then leave and see waitresses all spread out on sofas chilling out hit a nerve. If you like poor service, and Fawlty Towers, then this is the place for you!

Not as good as it was. Have eaten here a few times and it’s always been very good. Last night overall was really poor. Table was for four. Had to send one of the starters back as the mussels were cold. We should have sent the other mussels starter back but that diner didn’t want to make a fuss and tried and failed to eat it. The replacement starter was fine. Lo and behold the diner who had endured the cold mussels was then given a burnt pizza which again was inedible. Of the other three mains, the fish and chips and the lasagne were really good but the sauce for the meatballs was basically just bland and mediocre. In fairness the staff deducted the mussels and the pizza from the bill but we would rather have eaten and paid for them. The waiting team do work really hard but they don’t seem to be getting any coaching or management direction. It’s a real shame because this place is in a stunning location and is creatively and interestingly decorated and furnished. Need to up their game.

Well, my wife and I were here yesterday, 18th September, and were treated to some gorgeous food. Baked Cod and a Ribeye Steak which in our opinion was as nice a presented and tasty meal as we’ve had in Portpatrick. Staff managed to squeeze us in and we left to happy campers!! Top marks and I’ve been to most places this quaint little village and this is now top of the list. Definitely worth a visit!!

Mount Stewart Hotel Portpatrick First of all can I just say that this review is for both the Hotel and restaurant, not just the restaurant which is what tripadviser is asking about, My wife and I checked in on 18/7/22 for two nights dinner bed and breakfast, our initial impression was that the hotel was at the top of a steep road up from Portpatrick Main Street. With only a few parking places at the front, however there is resident parking at the back of the hotel but you then have to carry your bags down a hill at the side of the hotel to enter at the front not a problem but if elderly or infirm could be difficult.( It would be sensible to unload at the front and then park at the back of the hotel, if there is no parking at the front, however when you first arrive you don’t know that there is no entrance at the back or anything about the hotel, so first tip would be dump your bags then park the car.) On entering the Hotel we were greeted by a welcoming pleasant nice reception person (young lady) who quickly processed our admission and explained the layout and arrangements for meals etc, good start. We were located in the Wallace room which on the web site is listed as almost a suite, no exaggeration we loved it, a large room with double bed, good sized wardrobe a courtesy mini bar tea and coffee making facilities with a kettle and kenco coffee machine, a large tv (never on) a large en-suite shower room. In the en-suite there is dormer window this opens and has a pull down blackout blind built into it for privacy from the houses behind it takes a wee bit of fiddling to sort it .Best bit in the room was the window seat with a fantastic view over Portpatrick and the Irish Sea, I cannot express the pleasure we had watching boats coming and going from Portpatrick harbour (simple pleasures) And the window fully opened to allow air into the room, during the hottest two days of 2022 this was important and needs to be mentioned. On night one we headed down for dinner looking forward to a bit of fine dining and were directed into of all places the breakfast room to be seated at our table I think this is used for residents dining but I feel the room is a bit lacking in atmosphere We asked for a change of table to the bar area with a window table, this was sorted everything was great. Based on our two dinners in the hotel I would have to give the kitchen the thumbs up, the food was good and the service was chatty and friendly all good. Breakfast was well cooked with plenty of choice for cooked options there was cereal and fruit juice to help yourself to but no fresh fruit or yoghurt I found this unusual in a four star hotel. The only niggles I have are to do with the room we were in, there is a large burn in the carpet where someone I think has put the hairdryer down , the window in the main room is difficult to operate because of a rusted locking plate making the mechanism catch, the shower room door has no lock and no door catch so does not stay closed, we had to use a paper wedge to keep the door closed for a modicum of privacy, also an idiot sheet to explain the working of the dormer window would be helpful as most people wil never have had to operate one of these things. On our last morning my wife had a long lie then tried to take a shower only to find that there was no water, I went downstairs to find that there were only some breakfast staff in the hotel, they were very helpful and checked to see if there was any empty rooms, unfortunately there were none, the lady I was talking to explained that the water system in the hotel meant if others were using their shower there wouldn’t be enough pressure to get water to the top floor namely ours, so my wife used bottled water to clean her teeth and then we waited to see if the water pressure built up enough for her to take a shower this was a real adventure, eventually a trickle started then a real shower was had and equilibrium was restored, I found out later that a plumber was in and I take it had fixed whatever the problem had been. Please do not see these things as anything major, we really loved our stay at this

We booked the Mount Stewart for their new spa package. On a whole the thing was just awesome. We were greeted and shown to a beautiful room that was decorated impeccably with a free standing bath, large couches, and an amazing view too...We went down and had possibly the best meal I have ever had, the Mixed grill was just awesome. The sweets and all else were superb to say the least! The quality, taste and service was out standing...Then after a good rest we went to the spa, a personal hot tub for us pair to relax in, it was exactly what you need to end the night. There was a sauna, being honest it looked awesome, but did not use it as was ready to snooze after the massive meal, relaxing hot tub then on to the massive bed to relax. (We actually sneaked back down to the hot tub for another shot) sorted by Jack as it was free again... why not eh x On while the experience was fantastic, the staff were awesome and I Will definitely be back. PS the mixed grill is a fair dish, but you know all us old men will defo give it a go...Diane, Jack, Ian and all are just fantastic... Thanks again

We had been recommended by fellow travellers to eat here. It is certainly the most stylish venue in the harbour area. Although they, like everyone, are offering a reduced menu, we enjoyed the food very much. Take mNote, main courses are large,! I can recommend the Chilli prawns to start, and the goats cheese with beetroot and crispy bacon. The chicken and mushroom crepe was substantial, as was the chicken, bacon pasta bake.

Credit is due to its beautiful location and views, however everything else was disappointing. The staff appeared unenthusiastic when warm communication and a smile gones a long way. The food came out very quickly in about 15 minutes which made us question it's freshness as it was scorching as if it has been microwaved. My fish and chips were supposed to come with 'homemade tartare sauce', which when I asked where it was the waitress said she'd provided packeted tartare sauce on the table, so it wasn't as described on the menu. The fish was a bit soggy and chips tasted a bit like frozen chips, not worth £12 when it's better for less at a chippie. My partner's lamb did taste good but we wondered how fresh it was considering how quickly it came out and how hot it was! The menu should be updated to freshly cooked food to order. The decor could really do with an update round the bar area where we sat as it seemed like a mish mash of an olde pub, unpleasant blue lighting and tacky modern furnishings. It didn't have a succinct vibe. Update the food quality, the waiting staff enthusiasm and the decor in the bar area at least and it will be a winner!

Booking - Booked by telephone in advance, but told to book dinner much nearer the time which i did. Parking - Available but at night very busy and we were blocked in - though we luckily did not need the car,Arrival - Manager booked us in, no info provided ref check out, breakfast, local area etc. Room - Lovely and we paid extra for a sea view, so even better. Although the room was spacious and lovely there were a few, small areas that could be improved for a 120.00 a night. Both saucers, and tea pot were chipped. The cups were not matching and there was no decaff or sweeteners. (I did ask for some, but was told they did not supply, I was given a mug when i asked). There were no biscuits and no bottled water, although there was a mini bar where you could purchase some and other items. The lamp did not work and the room very dark. (The lamp was fixed when i reported it). Even when fixed you were not able to read in the evening due to how dark the room was. There was an iron burn on the carpet, but in fairness i wouldn't expect them to change the carpet for that. There were no tissues by the bed. No information provided in the room ref timings and local area or wifi - just little personal touches would be nice.Bathroom - Beautiful with roll top bath. Robes and slippers provided. The water roasting so be careful. The bath mat was paper and my hubbie slipped when coming out the bath although did not injure himself. Three bulbs out of the five were out in the bathroom chandelier. Towels very thick and fluffy.Wifi - There is none, and the code provided will not work. I went downstairs to ask for the code, but no luck. I asked later at the bar and they gave me the same code and when questioned explained that the wifi was poor in the room we were in. So obviously the Smart TV was useless.Hot Tub - Noticed a room with this but a sign said booking required. This was not explained in room or on checking in. It would have been an option but was not aware this was available. I do not know if this would be more money.Dinner - Pre booked as requested, but as we went to dinner we noticed signs up giving prices for BBD or BB, this would of worked out cheaper for us, but this was not explained or offered on booking over the phone or on arrival. We were originally seated in the conservatory which was a little chilly and very empty. We did move into the main seating area, with no bother, which was much better, with a lovely roaring fire, a traditional decor and people. Dinner was totally amazing and no faults what so ever. The steak was like butter and wonderful. The service from the waiters were just as good. They looked smart and attentive at all times. Yes a little pricey but to be expected and a treat so no complaints there.Entertainment - This was a gentleman playing the piano, but not in the room you eat, Perhaps a little wasted in my opinion, but that could be due to space?Atmosphere - A little lacking and if i am honest i felt a little uncomfortable. We went into the village and had a great night, where live music was being played.Sleep - Great and big, comfy bed.Breakfast - Very, very disappointing at 12.00 a head, that was pre-booked. No one to seat us, so made our way to conservatory and sat at pre-laid table. Waited for approx 10-15 mins before being seen by waitress. No decaff available. There was no fruit, yogurt, pastries, breads etc, only cereal, OJ and AJ available. Breakfast was a set menu where we had Mount Stewart breakfast. Not great and a very average to small portion. I forgot to take a picture. Jam, marmalade etc were your basic, plastic, packaging Bookers produce, Again for 12.00 a head not the quality you would expect. Bread was not homemade but your normal loaf.Overall - A lovely, hotel with a great location. Dinner out of this world. Attention to detail and friendlier more informative staff/manager would be appreciated for such a high price. Breakfast i would NOT recommend.Reading past reviews - majority very good. I note that breakfast has gone up 4.00 per person in under a year. I also see the wifi issue has not been addressed in over a year either.

This must have one of the best locations in town...albeit at the top of quite a steep hill (there is limited car parking), the views across the town and out to sea, especially evenings/sunsets are not to be missed. There is a lovely outdoor terrace which makes the most of this situation.Inside there is a formal restaurant plus a bar area, also serving meals. Good selection to choose from. The main disappointment was that my ‘hot’ meal arrived on a COLD plate, and the steak itself was not particularly hot either, Flavours were good, but the meal was presented with a casserole dish of chips! Mountainous, ever for two people. A bit of a waste, as far too much...better to reduce the quantity, and advise people more is available should they wish.Staff helpful and reasonably efficient, though on the evening visiting the place was ‘jumping’ and staff were rushed off their feet, hence service suffering somewhat as a result, Had to ask a couple of times for menus and the bill!Overall though this is good place to dine, though booking probably best, particularly at weekends as this is a popular establishment,

Whilst staying in one of the apartments attached to the hotel, we ate here 3 times, and on each occasion the food was great, and for the quality a really good price. Cajun Salmon and Posh Fish and Chips were both excellent (the latter at just £9 for a really large portion), the steak burger was really tasty and Scampi & Chips was very good.Only disappointment was the mussels, whilst tasty were small and a number of broken shells. Six members of our family had a celebration dinner here, and on arrival were all quite impressed by the décor and cleanliness of the place. We were immediately shown to our table in the conservatory, and soon after our drinks order was taken. The drinks arrived very quickly and we then ordered our meals. Now the staff are all polite and efficient, but interaction with them was limited to say the least. There was a certain ‘air’ and ‘pretentiousness’ about them that didn’t make you feel like valued customers. The starters were soon brought to the table, and the night continued with courses being cleared and brought out with military precision, but no-one ever came to the table after commencement of a course to ensure that everything was okay – once a course was delivered that was it until the dirty plates were cleared. The starters were all lovely – the mains on the whole were the same, except for the pizza which was not good value for money, poorly prepared/cooked and not all that tasty – the sweets however were all poor value for money and most were not of a good standard, and nearly all of the party agreed that we should have given this course a miss. Now one might say why did we not complain – the reason was that it was a family celebration and no-one wanted any upsets or arguments to spoil the evening.

We booked a table and asked for the window table and for the 3rd time there were people at the table we reserved. We ordered starters & mains and only one starter arrived. We advised that 3 starters were ordered and then had to wait for the other 2, by this time my husband had finished his starter! The food was mediocre and we had to go find someone to get the bill....even though there were 2 people behind the bar watching what was going on. As I mentioned this place is great for a cool drink on a nice day with lovely views but they have to get the service and a good chef to compliment the beautiful surroundings.

Our visit was helped by amazing weather so we were able to sit on the front terrace with an increadible see view just before sunset. Food was great nice menu with plenty choice but not a huge selection that was overwhelming. All well cooked and served hot and quickly. Lovely decor indoors with comfortable seating. Def be back.

We have visited the Mount Stewart three time in the last few days. Twice for drinks and once for Sunday dinner. The staff were really friendly and helpful on all three occasions. I had mussels for starters and sea bass fillets for main course. I thoroughly enjoyed the food and would definitely return again.

Looked forward to going here for dinner at the end of our weekend visit but sadly it didn’t live up to what we expected. For Easter weekend they seemed very short staffed and the slow service also ruined our meal.

But their pizzas are absolutely average - overloaded with cheese which, if I had to decide, I would say was Galloway Cheddar - not so Italian, mi amigo.

Came up for a Sunday evening meal, we had not been in the conservatory restaurant wonderful ambience and so tastefully decorated but let's talk food, a good range of delights including specials we both plumped for meatballs and spaghetti although the slow braised beef sounded divine, anywAy lovely hot fresh food with loads of flavour. Hubby opted for dessert again a good selection he chose an orange cheesecake which he said was totally gorgeous, a very fair price for a very delicious meal Thank You, highly recommended

Sunday lunch - a wet and windy day. Still, there are views over the North Channel to die for. The whole place has been re-furbished in a modern and fresh style. Carefully sited tables maximise the views; VERY practical well thought out layout. Staff attentive but not over-keen. It was quiet and sometimes there was no-one in the bar where we ate. Nice menu and we chose seafood - the platter options were great and a very clever idea of "mix and match". Well cooked, nicely sauced and good portions. I suspect dinner in the dining room in summer could be one of those spectacular once a year dining out experiences - but in winter the food has to be good and it was.

The Hotel has had a recent face -lift , and an extention which is called the conservatory , that is used for dining , as against having your food in the bar area . We had a lovely meal well cooked and served in the champagne bar area , coz the conservatory was fully booked , and we were glad , coz they were rather a raucus mob . I hope the new set-up is a success and it adds to Portpatrick's choice of places to eat . We would definitely go back to the Mount Stewart , for quality and quantity of meals added to it's location makes it worth while doing the climb up and watching the sun-set .

We popped into the bar here a few times during a weeks stay in Portpatrick. We always received a warm welcome from all of the staff. The beer and wine was lovely, Belhaven Black my personal favourite, and was enjoyed whilst enjoying the fantastic view overlooking the Irish Sea, harbour and village. We also visited the new and very impressive restaurant. The food was very good value for money but more importantly was all delicious. We visited this establishment several times last year and were always impressed by the pleasant, friendly and helpful staff. This was still the same this year so we are already looking forward to returning next summer.

I was last in The Mount Stewart some years ago before the extensive remodelling of the Hotel. I went today for lunch at 12 noon. It is gorgeous to look at (a lot of research has gone into selecting the furnishings and decoration) and there are sea views from the new extension. The food is excellent as is the staff. Don't miss it if you are in Portpatrick.

Had not visited here for sometime however on the recommendation of Massimo we decide to go there for lunch. Greeted by excellent staff we were seated in position "A"in the new extension overlooking the sea. Being honest I thought looking at the lunch menu with no 2/3 course deals on was a little expensive. And then boom! Our fish & scampi lunches came in exquisite detail, freshness and lovely service with a smile from the young waitress who was very attentive to looking after us. Beautiful surroundings, service and food to die for which I would most actively encourage others to visit! Thanks Massimo

We visited Portpatrick on the Easter weekend and even though the town seemed quiet on Good Friday, the restaurants were booked up. The Mount Stewart fitted us in if we didn't mind sitting on the big table in their private dining area. This was fine with us so we were taken through into a very pleasant and stylish dining area. The staff were all extremely friendly and attentive. I had a Cajun prawn starter and the burger from the specials and enjoyed both. The hotel/restaurant has a fantastic view out to sea and a good atmosphere. I'd happily go back to the Mount Stewart if I visit Portpatrick again.

We have been to Mount Stewart twice within the last fortnight and this newly refurbished restaurant/hotel is fantastic. The food was delicious and well presented. The staff so friendly and efficient! This was two of the best meals we have had for a long time. There is other really lovely places to eat but this exceeded our expectations and the cost was very reasonable suitable for everyone. On our first visit we were offered to view the newly refurbished ensuite bedrooms, wow they are amazing and so welcoming, wouldn't hesitate to stay there but we do stay up at the Mull of Galloway but you never know we might book in for a weekend as you really feel you ate away on holiday here.We viewed the lounge bar as well where you can eat as well or enjoy a beveridge or try one of Massimo's special cocktails! Lovely open fire very welcoming. Will be back very soon! All the best for the future to Mount Stewart, the refurbishment has made this a very desirable place to stay, eat or go for a night out.Diane & John

We went back to Mount Stewart after a long absence and out of interest to see the refurbishment and try the food. Not disappointed and must congratulate them on the improvements they have made and still maintaining the cosy atmosphere. The standard of Décor is very high and a lot of thought has gone into it. Well Done.If you are fish oriented, you will not be disappointed as the quality and standard is very high. Large Menu with good choice, could maybe do with one or two meat dishes without spices . We will certainly be going back in near future.

Visited several times for meals, both in the bar & restaurant. Owners exceptionally nice people. Food always excellent, fresh, variety to choose from, presented well & tasty. Christmas Day meal perfect, most recently had Mother's Day meal, set menu but plenty choice, again food beautiful. Speciality is the seafood pancake which is very filling but then all their portion sizes are generous. New conservatory & refurbished restaurant decorated to a high standard & tastefully modern furnished, beautiful views from the conservatory. Prices reasonable. New addition to the staff is a popular local bar manager/ cocktail waiter Massimo who is a pure gentleman & a real asset to this family run establishment. My only disappointment on my last visit was lack of service, table wasn't ready on arrival & because restaurant was busy there was no where to sit whilst it was getting set up, didn't like table facing the wall either & tucked away in the conservatory meant staff not readily available & several times I had to get up from my table to look /ask for things plus service was slower than I've previously experienced, appreciate it was a busy day & perhaps victims of their own success but a little bit more attention would have been appreciated. Gutted not to rate 5 stars

Difficult to post this review as been going to Mount Stewart fior more than 20 years and know the owners however, attended with my wife and Grandaughter on Monday night. The food offered was horrible re heated frozen chips along with very poor quality fish and scampi. Even the starter of haggis tower was just smothered in sauce. At end of meal when the young waiter lifter our three quarter still full plates and asked how the meal was and we explained how poor it had been he just stated "oh well sorry about that" can only think that neither Diane or Graeme the owners were present.Numerous other places to go to eat please avoid Mount until it improves.Just not good enough.

This restaurant is part of Smiths hotel at Gretna Green. We were in the final days of our holiday in Scotland and wanted to have a special meal. We were staying at the hotel and saw this had good reviews. Well it didn’t disappoint. It was good that you could pick and mix from the a la carte menu and the bar menu. Every course was very good. Because we had courses from both menus I didn’t think it was too expensive. The service was good although it was very busy with other events going on. The staff were kept busy but were still attentive to our needs. Would recommend if you want something special or just for an evening meal.

A super bed and breakfast with a lovely vegan curry and home baked ecclefechan tart in the bar which had an open fire. Steve and Mary looked after us like a mum and a big brother. Could not do enough for us including a very welcome lift to and from hoddom Bridge as we were walking the annandale way. And a packed lunch to order. Will recommend to all, especially walkers.

We ate here and finished our meal, the waitress cleared away and we decided we'd have another round of drinks before leaving. We waited 5, 10 minutes and the waitress never came back. I went in search of someone but couldn't find our waitress. I didn't like to open the doors to the kitchen. We waited another 5 minutes and my wife said 'this is ridiculous' and went off in pursuit. She found our waitress in the bar (was she watching TV, did she fancy the barman?) and asked if we could get some service. The waitress said 'the restaurant is closed', as if we were being unreasonable in expecting to be served a round of drinks. No, the restaurant isn't closed if you've still got people sitting at a table you're serving and you haven't asked them if they want a dessert or offered them the bill but simply buggered off. So we said OK, can we just pay the bill. Which we did, and obviously didn't leave tip. We won't be going back.

We had a day out yesterday and ended up here for coffee. The sign at the entrance said the cafe was open until 4.30. As it was just before 4 when we parked round the back we thought we had plenty of time. However when we entered the cafe I approached the counter to order I was told in no uncertain terms that they were shut. When I pointed out that their sign had said it was open until 4.30 the rude assistant pointed to the sign on the counter which said last orders 4. I said it was 4 and we only wanted coffees she said 'well we're shut'. You would think that after 2 years of pandemic that businesses would be grateful for any money they could get, well that's not the case in this cafe. We had been going to buy some plants but left empty handed and on the way out told the assistant in the shop that we wouldn't be back. Their loss is someone else's gain
