The Selkirk Arms Bar, Bistro and Restaurant in Dumfries & Galloway

This bistro has lots of vegetarian/vegan options, and a lovely beer garden with tables, so if it's shining, you can sit in the sun with a lovely meal. It also has free parking, if limited places. Would recommend booking as it gets very busy, but well worth it.

Sharer platter is immense, then had burgers was well priced, staff are so friendly and tentative

We stumbled across the Selkirk Arms tucked away in Kirkudbright. The food is delicious, local and cooked from scratch. Something that for the price we paid is not often the case. The manager/owner was attentive and relaxed as was the atmosphere. The Sea Brill on special was a delight as was the vegetable soup. The portion sizes were also generous for the price. Would highly recommend on the basis of our experience.

We've got absolutely hooked on Kirkcudbright since our first trip 3 years ago and recently had a fab 5th visit. On each trip we've been to the Selkirk, this time going twice. The food has ranged from very good to outstanding throughout including a memorable crab dish last year. Stand outs for us this time included a couple of starters, chicken parfait and haggis bon bons plus the totally wonderful chips - yes, something so simple as chips, they really were super. The Selkirk is a very welcoming place with a cosy little lounge at the front and the staff just couldn't be nicer. I'm a beer drinker and there's always a guest ale or two. We've recommended the Selkirk to friends who have now visited and enjoyed too. Our 6th trip to Kircoobree is already booked for next year so we're looking forward to getting back.

Service was excellent! Don't just look at the front of the hotel, walk down the side to a fab restaurant. Very relaxed, great food.

Says pet friendly but doesn't tell you only outside. Still food was lovely and they gave my pooch his own little water bowl while we ate outside. Would visit again but take warmer clothes if you have a dog with you 😉

Mould on windows brown staining on shower room was good size but could do with an upgrade for the price would not consider it to be four star

After having a few bad dining experiences in Gatehouse we decided to come to The Selkirk Arms after two local people recommended it, we were not disappointed, and had a delicious meal. It was the best meal of your trip and we will definitely return. We both had scallops, cooked perfectly. Our main courses were excellent, service was very good, I only wish there was a dog friendly area to eat as we travel with our sick dog who we don’t like to leave unattended in the car. We visited by chance with no reservation , but it was no problem. Great , good , a good selection of wine , spirits and beers to choose from. And most importantly the staff are very friendly, and attentive.

We visited the Selkirk Arms many years ago and had a wonderful meal. We thought we would visit again when in the area and was pleased to see that it was dog friendly…..however on arrival we were informed that we could have a drink outside in the garden or in a small lounge area. We could not have food anywhere. Really disappointing especially as the hotel advertises that it is dog friendly.

We have visited Kirkudbright many times and have walked past this hotel and could never get in for an evening meal as it gets booked up well in advance. However we booked for one night at the end of our most recent trip to the area and the wait was worth it. Everything about the hotel is 5⭐️. The greeting from the staff at reception, the beautiful calm ambience of the rooms and the luxury of the bedroom. There were so many lovely details and finishes which are overlooked in many hotels. Fresh flowers on the dining table, old fashioned service, beautiful decor, luxurious cushions and curtains and comfortable beds and pillows. The garden was stunning. The food was of a high standard for both dinner and breakfast. We can’t wait to return and stay longer next time. Thank you to all the staff.

Joanna and her team were super welcoming and accommodating. We booked late in the day for a dog-friendly room and the hotel staff couldn't do enough for us. We had a fantastic stay and would recommend the hotel to anyone. The room was lovely, the hotel stunning with lovely food. 10/10.

Lunch was fantastic. Top quality food and excellent service. Highly recommend. Had the lamb shoulder pie followed by sticky toffee pudding. Both 5 stars.

The Selkirk Arms Hotel is a lovely wee find with great food, service & atmosphere. A varied menu suitable for all tastes. Great care is has been taken to source local produce.

This was our second dinner here during our week in Kirkcudbright. Outstanding food and incredible friendly and efficient service. My son had the best tomato and basil soup he’s ever had and the fish and chips was probably one of the best we’ve had in Scotland. We’ll definitely be back next year.

Lovely meal and great hospitality

We visited here with a friend for lunch. The staff were very attentive and polite, the ambiance was nice. We found the food was ok, but not as good as we anticipated. We also thought it was rather expensive for what you got. If restaurants offered more value for money locally, they would get more trade, and generate more income, especially if they are reliant upon local residents to support businesses during the lean months.

2nd time staying here for a few days. Food was excellent, room comfortable, and staff very friendly and welcoming. Spoke with Chris, the owner, a couple of times and he was very helpful and welcoming. We’ll be back.

Right from the friendly welcome when we arrived, the Selkirk Arms was a most enjoyable experience. The menu makes the best of local foods and the cooking was of the highest quality. The waiting staff were also friendly and professional. We can’t speak highly enough of this place.

The Galloway Beefburger was let down by overcooked, hard chips. While the meat was tasty and juicy, the burger didn't look visually appealing - think school dinner. I see a picture in the reviews where the burger looks amazing with the pickle on top and a mini basket of perfect looking chips. Mine was nothing like that. No basket, no pickle, no resemblance. The Pan Roasted Hake was a little overcooked and quite under-seasoned. We ate it all, there was nothing unwholesome about it. Just a bit disappointing. On balance, we were the last booking on a fully-booked weekend night and I suspect that was a factor.

My partner had stayed for an evening to celebrate her birthday. We'd booked to eat at the hotel restaurant and were both thoroughly glad we did as the food was exquisite. The staff had even gone out of their way to write my partner a card and pour a glass of bubbly - thank you! We really enjoyed our stay and can see why it was so popular!

A very simple fine fare for a modest lunch- very friendly staff and decent menu. Service was prompt and well stocked bar.

Super Friday night getaway.We attended the very informative wine tasting which finished just in time for our dinner booked at 7.30pm. Steak & fish & chips were spot on as was the clootie pudding. We had been allocated room 19 which was small but well appointed. To be honest we didn’t spend much time in the room as we were out the door after our nicely cooked breakfast for bike ride to Castle Douglas. We returned in time to have a really good afternoon tea with a nice selection of cakes and fresh cut sandwiches and many cups of tea as we’re a bit dry after the bike ride. We payed the bill a departed for home feeling full up and relaxed. We will be back.

This hotel was delight. Very friendly and helpful staff. Hotel warm and welcoming despite cold and rain outdide. Our room was besutiful, lovely comfortsble bed, good bathroom with bath and shower. Nice touch was the nespresso machine and pods. Approved of the jack points on sockets for usb and tech leads. Fruit and biscuits as well. Dinner perfect from award winning young chef, we shared scallops snd risotto starter I had roast tandoori cauliflower very tasty and just well spiced. My husband said the pigs cheeks were delicious. A shared pannacotta rounded off a great meal. Excellent nights sleep was followed by a hearty Scottish Breakfast. We didn't need any more food until the evening. I can't recommend this lovely hotel too highly.

Lovely hotel and restaurant in Kircudbright. Good room and really good restaurant with bar and friendly staff. Had 2 pork bellies and starters of Haggis croquettes. Excellent food. Would recommend this hotel and the town as there are quite a few restaurants and bars. Free parking at the back of the hotel was a bonus.

We had the warmest of welcomes from several staff on a cold day. We were seated next to a coal fire and enjoyed a classic menu of tasty cock-leekie soup followed by a generous plateful of haggis, neeps and tatties. The beer was excellent too.

We stayed here for the Stargazing Weekend in November 2023. The hotel is lovely and food is excellent. The staff are friendly and helpful, and the rooms clean and comfortable. The weather was against us so we didn't see any stars - alas - but we had two informative sessions with expert Steve, a visit to the planetarium and a thoroughly enjoyable stay. The hotel is centrally located in Kirkcudbright which is lovely to visit for scenery and independent shops.

We stayed for one night, and enjoyed the most exceptional evening meal. Top quality food - locally sourced and presented wonderfully, and a great wine menu alongside. We stayed overnight and have to say the breakfast was equally brilliant. What a find!... will definitely be coming back (again...and again.) Thank you to the whole team whose attention to detail and customer service added the cherry to the cake.

Here for a few days visiting Kirkcudbright. What a super place! The rooms are very good, spotlessly clean and well appointed. The main reception rooms, dedicated to Robert Burns are really well done with lots of books and memorabilia. The staff are extremely pleasant - all of them - but would single out Eileen who was welcoming, very helpful and a constant throughout our stay. The South African chef has to be acknowledged as the food is excellent; we could not fault a thing. Would highly recommend.

Booked for Sunday lunch. Made to feel very welcome and seated quickly with very nice local drinks. The food was excellent and the service. Spent nearly 3 hours over our meal savouring every bit.
