The Tongue Hotel Restaurant in Highland

Stayed for one night and spend most of the day/night in the bar and hotel. Restaurant was - perhaps in the high end with regards to price, but fair enough the standard was high.

We thoroughly enjoyed our meal out with friends. A good selection of dishes available served by friendly & attentive staff.

Good location lovely big room, nice bed, quilt and pillows. Dreadfulcoffee bags, only two. Bathroom small and inadequate. No conditioner or extras , shower over bath , very basic not what I expect. Overall expensive for for what it is. Parking awful had to drag cases in the rain a long way.no help no one on desk to ask questions of. Had a recent return but still old-fashioned and tatty in parts.

I've put off writing a review as didn't want to be unkind, but the food here is really not good, particularly so given the prices. I'm from the local area and come back quite regularly and have now had 3 bad experiences here. The waiting staff are lovely, but the service isn't high end (e.g. bringing starters before drinks have even arrived, forgetting requests etc). My biggest issue is the food though. Experience 1 - undercooked batter on fish & chips (sloppy inside, yuck). Experience 2 - undercooked mussels (dangerous!) in wrong sauce. Experience 3 - sloppy, tasteless risotto with poached egg on top where the white of egg wasn't cooked (inedible). Plus minestrone soup that I could have made better myself and ice cream dessert served like it was to a child (sprinkles..). Maybe it's just that locals service is rushed / not prioritised, so perhaps better for tourists...

Very professional, welcoming staff. Top notch food, perfectly presented and cooked - a very varied, interesting new menu.

Great stop for lunch. The Cajun chicken sandwich with blue murder cheese was quite tasty. Service was very friendly and the ambience was nice.

Booked ahead as part of NC500 road trip. Parked up at the Kyle of Tongue Campsite then walked 25mins to restaurant. Best 25 min walk of the trip , food was outstanding, service was top drawer and the location/ambiance perfect. Do not miss the Scallop starter, don’t think about about not tasting the sublime venison with the blackberry jus. Cheese to follow capturing all of the Scottish brilliance in this space. We will be back.

Fantastic dinner- No booking needed - menu had some great items listed and the food was delicious! We had the special of the day - haddock and chips fresh and such a great potion size we struggled to finish it! The staff were excellent very friendly and approachable. Would definitely recommend if your in the area!

Absolutely delicious and fantastic service. I had the lobster and chips, which appeared to be in a garlic and lemon sauce, and my partner had the chicken with a chorizo’s and Parmesan sauce. Both the meals were melt in your mouth and the flavours were outstanding! We were last sitting on a Sunday (8:30pm) so wasn’t expecting the high quality we got :) My only complaint was we had tap water (in addition to wine) and the jug wasn’t left on the table, however we also didn’t ask. Really recommend going if you’re in the area.

Had a very enjoyable meal once it arrived, despite being a table for 2 only one meal arrived, as the restaurant emptied we were virtually left in the dark.

What a gem, beautiful room, gorgeous restaurant and outstanding service from walking through the door to checking out. Complimentary sherry in the room was a surprise. Gorgeous double shower and all the supplies you need. Tea and coffee and a flask of milk, keeping cool was perfect. Lovely king size comfy bed meant a good night’s sleep. Varrich restaurant served gorgeous food. Kames steelhead trout, pea, herb and spinach risotto was outstanding, fish and chips from the specials menu was delicious. Starters of Shetland mussels were absolutely delicious and the venison carpaccio was excellent. Pre starters of focaccia with oil and balsamic, and olive’s with feta and little crisp breads were delicious, the anticipation of the rest of the meal was heightened from taking our seats. We had a fabulous dinner at the Varrich restaurant during our NC500 tour - in fact it was the culinary highlight of the holiday! What an unexpected find - fine dining indeed. Our respective dishes of duck, pork and steak were all beautifully presented, and were absolutely delicious (3 very clean plates!). Portions judged finely enough that we were tempted into ordering desserts (well..... Orkney fudge cheesecake, just couldn't be missed). All also delicious. Service was nice and friendly. It is a little on the expensive side, but for the quality of the food, it wasn't unreasonably high. Not sure I understand the bad reviews on here - we really enjoyed our visit, and I only wish it wasn't 500 miles away otherwise I would definitely be returning!

Rooms are very well appointed with good views, although very expensive. However we were very disappointed with the restaurant. This was the only option for dinner in the village and they are capitalising on this. The food was grossly overpriced, the portions were tiny completely tasteless. My meal had one baby carrot that had been shaved to the width of a cocktail stick, one cabbage leaf folded into the side of a postage stamp and four small pieces of duck breast. My husband had the same meagre portion of veg and four cubes of belly pork that was mostly fat. Both meals cost over £25 per head! Breakfast the next day was equally disappointing. We had to request a menu after waiting for twenty minutes, we then had to request tea and toast despite having ordered it. When the “full cooked breakfast” materialised it was cold, tiny and undercooked. The food and drink for our one night stay was over £120 and the room itself was £170. We feel completely robbed and wouldn’t recommend this hotel to anyone.

Emplacement excellent pour parcourir la North Coast 500, la salle a manger est très agréable, les repas très bons, le petit déjeuner également, le service et le personnel étaient excellents. Chambres pas très grandes mais confortables. Le prix un peu élevé mais l'Ecosse est assez chère en général et sur la route 500 les hôtels sont rares.

The website states 'Varrich Restaurant is our main hotel restaurant that’s open to both guests, non-residents, and locals.' and provides a copy of the breakfast menu for people to download, yet we were turned away when we attempted to walk in for breakfast as it was "for residents only". Very disappointing and as we had walked 150km from Lochinver to Tongue on the Sutherland Trail over multiple days and we were really looking forward to enjoying a hearty Scottish breakfast to celebrate our achievement.

Excellent stay last night. Beautiful hotel recently refurbished. Great value friendly and the food was spot on. Would definitely recommend to anyone

If the restaurant sat customers a bit further apart when they aren't so busy it would be better. I felt like I was a part of both conversations either side of our table we were so close. Food was tasty, average, and a bit on the pricey side.

Friendly staff, clean, fresh food well cooked. Not gourmet but a good tavern quality. It is a nice resting place when traveling North or from north to west Schotland.

We ate there last night and apart from the soups the food was dreadful. the sole was not fresh and totally tasteless and the "red berry" crumble was mostly apple with a couple of raisins! Failed trade description act let alone anything else...

We had our evening meal each night during our stay in Tongue. The service was exceptional and nothing was too much to ask. As someone with food intolerances, I was taken care of and fed well with multiple options. Highly recommend.

Stopped for a bite to eat with the wife whilst out for a day trip on the motorbike, 2x burgers and chips and 2x cans of juice = £38 !!😢 unbelievable. Don't get me wrong the burger was fine but not £38 fine.

Visited here for a meal during a trip to Durness. We had a main and dessert. The food was great but it’s pricey. Mains average £16-£20 and starters / desserts are £10 on average. Service was good. The restaurant is in a nice location. Would...

First interaction fairly poor and abrupt, if your not high tech into apps, or QR codes, little hope for you here. Poor selection on menu, unless you like salmon. Online menu stated our burgers would be £14.95. Stripped all extra and salad off plate, so plain burger and chips,frozen, on paying cost us £17 each. So the only wow factor is when you get the bill. Not my cup o tea. Coffee was good.

We ate here when stopping overnight in Tongue whilst driving the NC500. The service we received was excellent. Our food arrived in a timely manner and they were happy to leave off a particular veg that I do not like when I chose my main course. We both enjoyed two courses and shared a dessert. Would eat here again and would recommend.

My third time to this place and wasn't disappointed at all. They are taking Covid precautions/rules seriously and helped me to feel safe. Loads of room between tables - I was on my own and was given a lovely table in the corner. Waiting staff friendly and helpful, chatting to the many tourists who dropped in for lunch.My lunch was tasty and hot, fairly well priced too. I will be back most certainly.

This is a review about an attempt to dine in hotel for lunch.Basically was greeted by the rudest front of staff lady, who first of all ignored me then was just rude throughout the encounter.I thought the hotel seemed drab and unwelcoming and the lunch prices expensive but there aren't many options in Tongue. Also unlike many establishments on my travels up north, there was no clarity, in signs or posters, about what they expected from guests by way of hand-cleaning/ masks etc.I met a family afterwards who had a similarly experience with this unpleasant member of staff and had also decided not to eat there.Think she is trying to make her job easier by being totally obnoxious.Very disappointing.

We werent staying at this hotel, but visited twice in the week for an evening meal. The first time we went, 2 people ordered the lamb, to which we were told there was none left. The next time we went, we booked a table for 6pm to make sure all dishes were available this time - 4 of us ordered the belly pork, only to be told there was none left!! How could this be possible at 6pm? Very disappointed.

evening meal on Friday- late sitting 8.30pm. The hotel only able to offer one of 2 evening sittings due to Covid restrictions which was reasonable. It was priced at the fine dining end of things, £28 for steak and £20 for hake risotto though I felt the meals were more middling than that. Still very nice food but presentation of mains was more pub grub, starters felt more refined, smoked salmon pate and chorizo croquettes, yumStaff were excellent and everyone enjoyed their mealWe have been before and it did feel that hotel are upping their cuisine game. They have won multiple best small hotel awards over the last few years and I can see why. We will be back when next passing through

Great food and service. A lovely atmosphere and a comfortable dining room. All the staff were lovely and made us very welcome. Highly recommended!

Went for lunch as a group of 4 adults. Had pre booked a table. Reception were friendly and helpful on arrival. Once seated our customer service experience went downhill from there. After sitting for 15 minutes a waitress appeared and asked if we wanted anything, we asked for menu's as we had not yet been offered them. Our order was then taken and it took a further 40 minutes for our food order to arrive. The food itself was OK, but not brilliant. We ordered baguettes which were lovely however our chips were not that hot. Another member of the party ordered a burger which he enjoyed. The final member of the party ordered fish which was not well cooked. The waiting staff varied in their helpful and friendliness. When it came to paying, we wanted to pay separately and were made to feel that this was a hassle. Overall we were disappointed with the customer service we received. We understand this is a difficult time for hotels and restaurants. However it was not particularly busy and we were not asking for anything out of the ordinary.

We went here for lunch during the easing of the lockdown restrictions on restaurants and were thrilled with safe practices, the friendly and welcoming atmosphere of the staff, and the tasty homemade food. The lunch menu has lots of amazing options, fully customisable for dietary requirements. 10/10, would highly recommend. We liked it so much, we came back the following day for more lunch! Staff were lovely, and incredibly helpful.Not a bad word to say about this lovely place.

We have visited The Tongue Hotel many times over a long number of years and have also been resident there. Today, we had the most abrasive, unfriendly welcome from the woman who claimed to have owned it for the past 13 years. Whenever we have called in for lunch on one of our many visits, we have been welcomed into the bar area or a cosy room next door where there is a fire. Today, we were told we could only have our meal in an empty, sparsely furnished, unwelcoming room, as unwelcoming as the woman from Reception who greeted us. The friendly, smiley waitress came to take our drinks order and confirmed that we could in fact eat in the bar or adjacent room. The first woman returned and, with obvious reluctance said we could eat in the room of our choice, after having aggressively corrected her member of staff. This humiliated the waitress and embarrassed us. She finally said, very pointedly, again in front of the now obviously very uncomfortable waitress, that she felt she should not have to explain her policy and left it at that. We then had good, attentive, efficient and friendly service from the waitress and enjoyed our food and drinks. Having paid our bill, we passed the Reception room and received a really flimsy, rather silly set of excuses from the first woman that did nothing whatever to improve matters. Unprofessional and the very opposite of what one expects of someone working in the hospitality trade. Let us hope that things improve or the limited numbers of customers, particularly at this time of year, will dwindle to nothing. Very disappointing.

Friendly service from young lady who gave our dog a bowl of water and cheerfully served us lunch which was very nice. The views from the rooms must be amazing.

Visited the public bar which had an open coal and dinner in the restaurant which was very good. Room had very nice touches. Lots of history on the walls - overall just a fantastic country hotel.

One of the best meals we have had during our NC500 travels! The salmon was perfectly cooked, as was the pork belly served on a bed of pumpkin risotto. Our waitress was also lovely and really made us feel so welcome. Keep up the great work!

We recently called here for a meal having read how nice it was.On arrival the lady on reception was lovely and friendly, told us to go into the bar and said they would sort out our drinks and a table.The waitress asked if we wanted drinks and took our order for a bottle of wine, this turned up fairly quickly but was just left on the table not poured and she left without asking if we wanted a table or anything.After 15 minutes we asked the waitress if they were able to fit us in, the wine was not open and I was ready to hand it back and leave.The waitress spoke to the man behind the bar who seemed very annoyed that we wanted a meal and after several minutes said he could get us a table in 45 minutes.We agreed and waited for our table, eventually a waiter came and took us to our table. We noticed that the restaurant was half empty so why was it a problem, there were plenty of staff walking around.We both ordered lamb shanks, when they came there was a small amount of dry mashed potato, three small pieces of broccoli and a small amount of gravy. The lamb was tender but dry, the whole meal needed more gravy and the addition of carrots or another vegetableThere was warm water on the table with slices of orange in but this was terrible, needed to be chilled.Nobody came to ask if things were ok, we sat about 10 minutes after our meal waiting for someone to bring our bill, in the end we went back to reception to pay, the man behind the bar was sat there and seemed annoyed again that we had interrupted him to pay. We will not be going back, we both felt unwelcome and the food was not very good.

We had been out exploring the Highlands and by the time we were heading back to the campsite it was getting late. We came up to this place and thought we would stopp off for dinner. As we had not made a reservation we had to wait about 20 minutes for a table to be available. We were escorted to a nice waiting area which had some nice comfortable seats and nice decor. We were then told a table was available and escorted through to a very nice dining area. We ordered the food and while waiting we saw some of the other guests meals coming out. The look and smell of it gave us hungry travelers something to look forward to. It was worth the wait, the food was delicious and plentyful. Happy to recommed this place for good food and the service was also very good.

Great food (salmon, steak), nice bar. But the service could a bit more enthousiastic. And you have to order at the bar.

We were staying at the excellent Bothy BnB. It looked like there are only really two places to eat in Tongue. We walked past both and the Tongue Hotel. looked the best. Food was great. My wife had the mussels and I had tomato and basil soup (freshly made) and Sirloin steak. Both very good. We shared a strawberry and apple crumble dessert. Pretty good (more vanilla syrup would have been better). Service was outstanding. The girls serving really paid attention to guests and timing of service.

Abbiamo cenato per caso in questo ristorante con delle buone moules e un buon filetto di nasello, ottime birre e un fantastico brownie al cioccolato. Conto un po' salato ma servizio cortese.

The menu consists in a wide range of dishes and the food quality is high. The dining room is very nice and traditional stylish. Good value for money.

Heerlijk gegeten, lokale verse ingrediënten. Heerlijke specialiteiten, prima prijs, je kunt hier voor ongeveer 15 pond een hoofdgerecht eten. Hoge kwaliteit ingrediënten, prachtig uitzicht wanneer je het geluk hebt buiten te kunnen eten.

This hotel is quite isolated. It is on the NC500 tourist route so a convenient stopping place.

The meal was good, but we waited too long for food and also for drinks. Despite this fact we enjoyed the food here!

To be honest, we didn't have high expectations, as is often found, food in remote Scottish hotels can be more of a miss than a hit. However, nothing was further from the truth - both meals were delicious, hot and fresh. Staff very friendly and welcoming and the bar had a good atmosphere. We used a wee snug which was quieter and just what we wanted. Prices are good, so really no complaints whatsoever.

Planned to go to Craggan Hotel but it was closed. Really pleased we ended up at the tongue hotel though as the food was lovely. We enjoyed the salmon (which had a really crispy skin) and the pork belly with butternut risotto. Good quality food in a remote location. Sticky toffee pud warm, fresh and delicious. Great staff and good music too.

I mainly ordered fish for mains - prepared with wonderful care for flavor and freshness. I recommend the beetroot hummus, and the chili-prawns on garlic toast. I never got around to desserts. Breakfast is very good. The waiting staff were always friendly and efficient.

Visited the restaurant as we were staying in B&B; nearby. We had a very good meal (duck & langoustines) in the busy restaurant.

This was a superb dining experience in the back of beyond. This was a great relief as there are virtually no alternatives! The food and wine were fabulous and the service good.

It was a lovely, warm day and food was necessary after a long walk. The bar/restaurant at the Tongue Hotel had a surprisingly diverse menu, though sadly no soda water on tap (minor failing). We sat in the sun outside and enjoyed the quinoa and avocado salad, and the pulled pork burger. Yum to both.

We found the lunch disappointing. Cajun chicken was overcooked and served with a huge piece of under cooked fatty bacon. Batter on fish was too thick and greasy yet not cooked through inside. When we complained to the waitress she was at a loss as to how to deal with it.

Not brilliant we were passing this place after a nice walk around the Kyle and needed to eat. The food was average with my wife having very undercooked fatty bacon and I had fish which had a thick layer of batter on it and which was quite dry.

I agree with the result, as this hotel was awarded best small hotel in the highlands. Staff were friendly, room excellent, food great and views stunning across to Castle Varrich. Quiet and good for a walk down the lane or especially to the castle

We stopped in here whilst on the NC500 around Scotland, it’s a proper nice family pub where everyone knows everyone and has a lovely homely feel. The locals and staff are friendly and will happily sit and chat. Also, they provide free tampons in the ladies bathroom which is just amazing!

Our visits were spread over 2-3 days. On the first stop in the public bar, service was mediocre at best; but the next day when we visited for a football match, the service was cheerful & friendly, So much so that we returned in the evening for a meal and to watch some of the 2nd game of the day.

Friendly staff, couldn’t accommodate for wheelchair access to the rooms so advised the tigh nan ubhal guest house next door. Popped in for a pint in the afternoon and was welcomed. Came back for dinner in the evening... exceptional. The chef was excellent and the quality of the food was better than the far more recognisable inver lodge hotel. Would stay in Tongue longer and take some time in the area

The food is great. The Chef buys the best produce locally and with his technical skills and love of food produced really excellent quality. I have eaten here before and am delighted that they are maintaining a really good standard.

Abbiamo scelto questo ristorante tra i pochi disponibili nella zona, Ci sembrava la scelta migliore anche in base alle recensioni di tripadvisor, Tuttavia il servizio è stato pessimo nel senso che abbiamo ordinato un filetto di salmone e del maiale, chiedendo che quest'ultimo fosse ben cotto e non al sangue. Inoltre avevamo chiesto se fosse possibile eliminare il purè di pastinaca e mettere un purè di carote cosa proposta Tra l'altro dalla cameriera stessa. Come antipasto abbiamo ordinato una zuppa di patate e porri e delle ostriche, sugli antipasti nulla da dire, né pregi e né difetti eccezionali. Per quanto riguarda invece il maiale alla fine è risultato al sangue e senza il purè di carota. Quando ci hanno chiesto se andasse tutto bene abbiamo risposto evidenziando i difetti del piatto e la cameriera ci ha risposto che lo chef si era assolutamente assicurato che l'ordinazione uscisse al tavolo come ordinata. Insomma servizio non buono ordinazione sbagliata in più il conto non proprio dei più economici. Andate altrove.

We had lunch here, First big compliment to the restaurant is that nearly every item is gluten free, Wonderful Soup was fab, Chips awful - dry and tasteless - frozen I think. Quite expensive too

The restaurant food is divine. Its nice view. ask for the tables with nice views. we loved how they use real fresh, local, natural ingredients that a great scottish grandma would use - ie real butter and cream ie and not cheap harmful processed seed oils/veg oils/even dodgy cheap rapeseed oil to cook our food. restaurants use this as its cheap but this place uses traditional fats from highlands.See dr.aseem malhotra (cardiologist) on vegetable oils. They had fresh produce ie fresh oysters from local kyle of lochlach, all the produce was supplied locally and fresh and wholesome. The scottish porridge was made traditionally with water and salt (yum- lot healthier that processed breakfast cereals) with an option of a dram of whisky in it. they had locally produced meats and traditional fare on offer. so a healthy place to eat too.

Superb restaurant with great choices of local seafood, perfectly cooked. Excellent breakfast with real porridge.

We ate here once during our stay in Tongue and were charmed by the lovely traditional bar and restaurant area in this delightful old hotel. Very well-presented food, reasonable prices for a place so far away from anywhere and a great setting to eat. The staff is very efficient if a little detached. Definitely worth a stop for a meal if you’re passing through Tongue and want something decent.

We ate here on a Monday, and I'd say the restaurant (which is a nice smallish size) was about half full, though two of the parties were quite large. There was a nice atmosphere both in the restaurant and the little bar we sat in before being seated.

We ate in the restaurant both nights of our stay. It is best to book in advance, and you have a table allocated to you. There are several staff in attendance, and it has an old fashioned feel to it, which goes with the ambience of the hotel. There is a reasonable choice on the menu, and as you might expect they are good on the seafood. Service can be a bit slow.

We had friends staying so we booked dinner and dined downstairs by the bar- note that restaurant dinner orders close soon after 8pm. The salmon was good. There were two players from Inverness making ceilidh music. Next morning, we had a decent cooked breakfast that set us up for the day. In a remote area like this, the choice is limited but I would recommend especially the atmosphere and friendly staff.

This is a traditional Scottish restaurant, serving good, locally sourced food. The fish was excellent. Our meal was well presented and tasty, the surroundings were delightful and the price was ok. Service was good. On the North Coast 500 route, this is a nice place to stop for a meal.

My partner and I had dinner in the Brass Tap Bar and the food was really tasty.Bar was spotlessly clean and friendly atmosphere.

Really enjoyed our meal in the Brass Tap Bar. Good good week presented and reasonably priced. And all topped off with a good pint of real ale, handpulled.

Ate in Brass Tap bar to allow Tipper the Border Colllie to join us. Excellent food and service. Even brought dog a water bowl.

We called in at lunchtime one day and evening the next day no vege option at lunchtime and not a very good choice of anything in evening ended up leaving without ordering in evening had a bowl of chips lunchtime husband had steak sandwich which was ok

Wij verbleven 2 nachten in dit hotel en hebben zowel ontbijt, lunch en diner hier genuttigd. Prima ontbijt waarbij je van te voren kunt kiezen wat je voor ontbijt wilt: met worst , eieren (gebakken, gepocheerd, gekookt) pap, bacon , kortom alles wat een schots ontbijt inhoud.

As a treat when staying in the area we had a v tasty evening meal.
