Ooooh. Truly great fish and chips in a village that knows well historically what it costs to harvest the sea. Whitehills has been a favourite of mine over many, many years. First as a child on caravan holidays in nearby Banff, later visiting vacationing family and taking my own along, and lastly as a wonderful experience for friends staying in the area. They'd already sussed out that Rock Fish is often fully booked, so we went early with a backup plan to get a takeaway if - as we immediately noticed - every table had a reserved sign (at 4pm!) However, they managed to sneak us in to a table that was reserved for slightly later, and that came as a relief to the oldest member of our party on a cold, wild day on the north-east coast. Imagine being at sea, or landing fish, in all that. We were treated to three very different and delicious dishes and one of my companions even tucked into a combo of fish and chicken, both of which suited her fine. My haddock was simply perfectly cooked and served with a smile, even though staff were very busy with large numbers of people at the takeaway counter and arriving to be seated. Whitehills and the wider area has other fine eateries and lots to see and do, but this place is where I'd go again and again for warm, local dining experiences.

Visited Rockfish for three carry out meals last Saturday. Can only describe the whole experience as chaos and the food was awful. Arrived and placed our order after waiting in a lengthy queue. Was told it would take 20 minutes. Meantime the same girl was trying to sort out takeaway/sit in orders and looked frazzled. Over 35 minutes later our name was called and the order handed over. Checked it on the way out and we’d been given the wrong order. Went back to explain and they said they’d refund the incorrect part. Said we’d prefer it changed to the correct one as my husband still had to eat. This was done and off we went some 45 minutes later in total. Got back to where we stayed and it ended up in the bin. Fish completely overcooked (dry and disgusting) and chips tasted as though they’d been lying around for decades. Honestly awful. Don’t go here unless you’re wanting to fling your money away

Had the smoked haddock supper (again) on our first return visit in several years and it was just as memorable as the previous time. Superb quality - great tasting fish, cooked to perfection, brilliant crispy batter and lovely chips to round it off. Very busy, both for sit in and carry out , lots of staff doing their best to cope as understandably so popular with locals and visitors! The wait was definitely worth it. Only regret is staying so far away it’s a very occasional treat! Great value too, at £9.25

August and Scotland apparently beyond level zero but it was a fairly regimental affair. No dining in at the tables available and the staff were a bit Curt to be fair. Stand here wait there - what a fuss. Yep it had a good selection but I’ve had better and had one from Macduff the other evening that was likely better. To be fair I would not rush back. Average food but the staff could be friendlier for sure.

A friend and I traveled an hour to whitehills, when we arrived in the chipper the staff greeted us by saying it would be an hours wait. After a small consultation with my pal we decided to order. X2 haddock suppers, king rib and onion rings. The king rib was decent, and the chips were nice. The fish batter kind of soggy and lacking flavour. Home mad tar tar sause was ok. The onion rings tasted really cheap and like they were bought in bulk frozen from a cash and carry, no onion inside the ring just mushed up onion ring filler. Didnt want to leave a bad review, but was just underwhelmed after an hour and 15 min wait to be honest.

I phoned to place and order at 7:40 and an older lady on the phone was very rude and abrupt in telling me that they closed at 8 (which I already knew) so I needed to hurry up. I was telling her my order and she sounded annoyed and inconvenienced. When I went to pick up my order a young girl served me and she was nicer than the older lady on the phone however I was made to feel very unwelcome by all the other staff. The fish was lovely however the chips were not very warm. There are plenty of other fish and chips shops that are just as good if not better with much nicer staff.

We have used the rock fish for many meals, we enjoy the food but the service is poor. We booked a table the day before, as this was the final meal with our family before they leave for England. It was booked for 5.30pm then we changed later the same day to 6pm to suit our arrangements. On our way home from Elgin (A98)we were diverted due to an accident. We rang ahead and told the rock fish we would be late. They said that would be fine. When we arrived at the rock fish we were told that they needed the table at 7pm for another booking. We had 45 minutes to order and eat. We had two small hungry children so we could not really walk out. I feel the attitude of a particular senior member of staff was rude. I said when we called that we should of been told that they needed the table. We could of cancelled and gone to a friendly fish and chip shop in Cullen which we have discovered. We are local people. We have visited the rock fish 3 times this week and to be treated like we were was disgusting.

Was very disappointed with this chip shop that we visited when on holiday 2 years ago. The menu is reduced only haddock , no cod if you want a battered fish which seems very strange in a fishing village with massive fish factory! Helping of fish and chips was reasonable though not generous for the price. I ordered scampi and portion of small chips. It came in a very small paper bag, I asked where the chips were. Reply was in the bag ! A few over cooked scampi and a tiny few chips costing over £8 and a small portion of mushy peas was £1.80. Expensive I’ve eaten out cheaper with decent amounts of food.

We asked for clarification of an item on the menu, this clearly was not allowed, you would think we had asked for a state secret. We live two doors from a chippie and are familiar with prices. Rockfish was over £3 more for the two suppers. Biggest shock was when I asked for salt and brown sauce. This is the usual down here in the south east of Scotland but, was told they didn't do brown sauce however, they could sell me a wee portion in a plastic tub, (ready under the counter!) for 60p. I was so shocked I just took it. Didn't even think to walk straight across the road to the supermarket and buy a whole bottle! Average food, average portions, high prices and sauce extra. Spent a week in Whitehills and had take outs from here more than once, the food was great each time and the selection of food available was fab, everyone was catered for :-)It does get very busy in here but our food was prepared in an acceptable time.Service was good and efficient but a little smile wouldn't have gone a miss.

Had a few carryouts here over the years but first time sit in.Both had a main course and the fish and the chicken fillets were really nice.Seemed to take a long time to get the food despite no one coming in for carry outs whilst we were there. Chips were cold. Good size helpings, in fact had to box up and take some home.Nice waitress.,

A clean shop with tables if you want to sit in. We did not sit in but I have to say that the menu looked good with nice specials. Our fish suppers (haddock) were tasty, the fish really fresh and the batter crispy and not too thick. Only minor remark is that I like my chips crispy and maybe they could have done with a bit more time in the deep fryer?

This is a little gem of a fish and chip shop/cafe. The selection of seafood on the menue is fresh and excellent. If you like fish breaded or battered you can have it either way; it's up to you. It's worth noting that the breaded fish is prepared in a frying pan, as it should be, not in the deep frier as it is so often done in other places. The front of house staff are pleasant and efficient. The open plan kitchen is clean and bright and the chefs are always busy. Sitting in is basic but what do you expect, it's a fish and chip shop and nobody goes there for the ambience. One of the best Scottish chippers I know of.

Popped in mid-afternoon on a Sunday, ate in the cafe which was clean with friendly service. Food was very good - I'd say the haddock was better than the cod. The meal price includes bread, veg, tea and the food was cooked to order and very hot.I was surprised they were open on a Sunday in April - not high season - but was glad to stop by.

Staff was very friendly, nice atmosphere and tasty fish - but do not even think about sitting down since the prices pretty much double if you don't take your food with you!We paid over 5 pounds for the fried prawn starter which consisted of 4 (!) tasty yet small shrimps and a bit of lettuce and some slices of tomato and cucumber. A small can of a fizzy drink is 1.40 and doesn't even come properly cooled. The chips were alright in flavour but not crispy at all.We had the rock turbot which, to be fair, was very good but not worth 10 quid! All in all the three of us paid almost 60 pounds for what in the end was nothing more than ok.And no, the cutlery wasn't golden nor were the napkins silk. You're a fish & chips joint - please adjust your pricing accordingly!

Another visit to our favourite "chipper". Excellent meal was had by all, this time I opted for the cod - chunky, fresh and firm white flesh, crispy batter and loads of chips. Been a while since I had fish and chips and boy have I missed it. First class. Great service too.

Visited with a group of friends and had the best fish and chips I've had in a long time. The "small" portion was more than adequate and came with bread, butter and tea - excellent value. We were served by a cheerful, courteous young lady for whom nothing was too much trouble. Highly recommended.

dropped in by on a sunday dinnertime.....there was a few diners (a few families) but plenty room for the wife & i !the pleasant waitress told us to chose a table & gave us 2 menus.......after a few minutes she return to take our order.....the wife opted for the ROCK TURBOT (£10)....2 nice sized pieces of fish chips & peas - lovely "chipper" chips - the batter on the fish LOOKED nice & crispy but a little soggy but still tasty !i chose CHICKEN FILLETS (£9)...5 LARGE pieces of chicken breast & chips (& garlic mayo dip) - the fillets were battered , like the fish , LOOKED nice & crispy but a little soggy.....Both meals came with bread , butter & a hot drink....GOOD VALUE i thought !For a "chip shop" it made a GOOD select of other foods....i.e. macaroni , curry , mince & tatties.....will return.....

Toured the UK in March 2011. Had the best fish and chips here of entire 3 weeks. I am sure there is better, but this was very good.

Go to rockfish regular on a Friday night, service lately has been second to nonestaff listen to your needs whether it be battered or breaded fish or chicken, separate side saladeverything always fresh . Did a lunchtime carry out order today, fantastic, strange combination for my son but it was just what he asked for. Wished I'd ordered for myself as the smell was amazing

This evening my friends and I were out to enjoy ourselves having a lovely meal. But that did not go to plan, as we had to wait 2 and a half hours for our food! (one of my friends order a steak which was flavourless and the other order a starter which was completely disregarded when asked about) Although waiter was very accommodating and trying his best to make our meals come quicker, the whole place is severely understaffed causing backups throughout the whole restaurant. As our food was taking a long time we were told we could leave and not wanting to deal with us in that regard. Overall I am very disappointed in the service I received this evening, either this place has to cut down it customer intake or find a way to accommodate this volume of people.

Lovely food served by lovely staff. Great meal and very tasty food, well presented. Even put candles in the desserts for the birthday boys. Thank you Buchan Braes.

We had the most amazing afternoon tea experience in the Bubble. We can't praise the Banff Springs highly enough. This was a mini 'hen party ' and so much thought had gone into making this so special for the bride to be. Beautifully decorated, Beth and her team looked after us so well. The quality of the food and drinks was outstanding. A lovely afternoon was had by all. Highly recommend! A big thank you to all involved!

Good things : This cafe is in a great location and offers plenty of seating outside which is ideal for those with dogs. Not so good things : The coffee was ok although pricey for the size of cup. Cakes were nice enough, but had too much buttercream icing. Bad things : The layout of the tables inside is a bit congested. The volume and choice of music appears to be for the benefit of the staff because we, and those around us at other tables, to raise our voices to have a conversation.
