Shocking service 14:00 on the 19 Oct) Went to bar to order, was told that she would come and take my order from the table. Said I'd be sat outside. Waited more than 15 minutes. Nobody came to take my.order but waitresses did come outside to deliver an order more than once. They could have seen I was waiting and taken my order, but didn't. Went back inside and explained to same lady behind the bar nobody came. She seemed non-plussed, didn't want to look me in the eye and more or less shrugged her shoulders. Spoke to another waitress hanging around and told asked her what she'd been doing and that she'd been outside and not come to my table. Was told they were very short staffed. However the place wasn't that busy. A group of 5 outside having a beer (no food) and party of 8 having a b'day party outside. But they'd finished ordering their food and drinks and were just doing the bday cake. Then there was another gentleman inside who'd already eaten and was actually ready to go and another table of 4. I saw at least 3 staff. So hardly short staff. Let's have the explanation...

We booked a table at the Swan at 5.30 as we were due to see that evening's performance at the Globe. You certainly can't get a more conveniently located restaurant and the views across the Thames to St. Paul's Cathedral are stunning at this time of year. So location gets two huge ticks. However, the service once we arrived didn't quite equal the venue. There is no pre-theatre menu on the website so when once was presented it was helpful but a surprise given we'd been looking at the a la carte. The question - if we order from the main menu will we still be in time for the theatre was clearly morfe complex than explaining string theory and the answer was *shrugs shoulders* We settled for the three course pre-theatre menu. The wine order was one Reisling with the starter and two glasses of white wine with the mains. You would think this would be straight forward, but it took around 5 minutes to get this understood. Even then two glasses arrived with the starters. The food was good without being outstanding. When the wine did arrive it was a short measure by 50ml which was fixed for one diner but not the second (who by this time had lost some interest). Service was slow, perfunctory and anything but unobtrusive, So much so that we removed the service charge - which might have been taken as a prompt to ask what was wrong - but it didn't. Nor did it seem to be a surprise. It's still a convenient place to eat if you're attending the Globe, but if you're not or you want consistent service levels maybe look elsewhere.

Food was good without being spectacular and the starter was warm rather than hot. I think we had a new waiter as he kept referring back to the menu when we asked him a question. We spent £450 for 4 of us which I think is a bit pricey. The drinks were about £150 of the total. The place had a nice buzz about it but not sure I'll be going back soon.
