Niche

Clerkenwell, Islington, 20-30£
05/10/2020: This boutique restaurant in Islington is the best place in London for gluten free food. Very often I find "gluten free" restaurants very limited in options and you can tell the gluten free menu isn't the greatest food, just food. In Niche everything is gluten free so you have many options. Also what is so good about Niche is that even when you're gluten and dairy intolerant you still have more than just one option, like in the other places. I love the menu, its just perfect, not to big, not too limited, very easy to decide what you want to eat. The quality of food, from starter to main and dessert was superb. It looks and taste sooooo delicious. My friend and I visited the restaurant today and firstly I was surprised how well the place was prepared in terms of the covid-19 rules compared to the other restaurants we visited recently. (plus adorable two massive teddy bears wearing a social distancing t-shirts ! what a great idea to make your day a little less scary in the pandemic reality) We had a lovely chat with the manager who gave us the best service ever, and a free glass of prosecco as it was his birthday today. We stayed there longer than planned, but the food and atmosphere was too good to finish too early. It was the best gluten free meal I have ever had. The starter Angel pâté blew our minds. It was fantastic ! My burger was perfect, plus the best sorbet! It wasn't my first visit and I know, after today, Niche is definitely my favourite place to eat in London.
01/10/2020: We have wanted to visit this restaurant for some time and had the opportunity to do so last night. The idea of a gluten free restaurant has obvious appeal to the growing number of coeliacs Niche is a very welcoming venue and we found the waiters very attentive ,professional and personable. They could not be faulted.Although the food was plentiful and well prepared, frankly the menu was a little predictable. Preparing gluten free food is not difficult if one avoids the obvious wheat and barley ingredients. To cook a roast dinner or grilled fish or burger is something one can do at home. The chicken starter was dry being slightly overcooked. The interesting choices are the Lamb Bhuna pie and the gnocchi .These take some thought in changing the basic wheat based ingredients,.I would have liked to see more challenging dishes which is the reason for 4 stars instead of 5 ..

Union Tavern

Clerkenwell, Islington
08/10/2020: The pub strap line is "friendly and efficient service in a warm atmosphere with great food, craft beers, real ales". Couldn't agree more. We were in town for the day and like to choose pubs off the tourist trails. The Union Tavern was just perfect with good beer, great food, lovely atmosphere and attentive service. Well done to the chef - who we could see working ! Perfect end to a lovely day's visit to London.
02/10/2020: I always enjoyed their gastro food, but on a recent visit it is clear that in addition to the ordinary expectedl dishes, their top of the range specials are really quite something. Original flavours exceptionally cooked - tribute to the chef. Staff v friendly as always.

The Wilmington

Clerkenwell, Islington, 20-30£
07/10/2020: We had a dinner with friends. It is an amazing place and food was delicious.Atmosfer is relaxing. We had brilliant time.Recomended to visit.
05/10/2020: I've visited The Wilmington for a few occasions: my bday, Christmas dinner with friends and Sunday Roast. The atmosphere is very cosy and lovely, doesn't matter if you are with a small group or bigger, you can find it comfortable in any way. If you want to try real British food - this is a place. Sunday Roast is amazing (we tried different kinds of meats) and the portions are huge. But, make sure when you visit the place Vytune is on the shift. She is amazing, always make you happy and so welcoming. It feels like it's her home and you're the most important guest. She can make your average, cloudy day feel like a biggest party.

The Peasant

Bunhill, Islington
08/09/2020: Our wedding reception at The Peasant was completely perfect. The venue looked magical lit up with fairy lights in the windows, candles and two roaring fires, and we couldn’t have been happier with the way it looked on the day. We knew we wanted a winter wedding somewhere in central London and were quite specific about what we were looking for - somewhere that would feel cosy, candlelit, in beautiful surroundings and with amazing food. As soon as we found The Peasant we knew it would be perfect for the day we had in mind. From the moment we met Nick we felt completely at ease and trusted that everything would be taken care of. He’s really warm and welcoming and helped us out in so many areas, giving us recommendations and guiding us through the planning process when we had no idea how much of certain things we’d need! Right up until the day we were in contact with Nick and everything ran really smoothly. We loved that we could give guests a choice of food on the day and had so much fun choosing our menu, often visiting the pub over the autumn as an excuse to try out different meals. The food on the day was fantastic and some of my friends still mention it now!So many guests have commented on how great it was that we could hire out the whole pub, and we found the rates to be so reasonable compared to most other places in London! You really get a sense that they value your wedding and they want to make it work for your budget, and everything is really transparent which we found so helpful. We absolutely loved everything about the day and would highly recommend The Peasant as the perfect venue for any couples looking for a beautiful gastropub in a really nice area of London (the surrounding area is great for wedding pictures!). Thank you to Nick and the whole team for making our day so special, it was everything we’d hoped for.The Sunday roasts and sticky toffee pudding are also genuinely the best in London!
19/06/2020: We had the the most wonderful wedding at The Peasant last summer. For a pair of novices like us, Nick and his team made the whole affair so easy! From the minute we walked into The Peasant the very first time, we fell in love and knew it was the reception venue for us... and our first meeting Nick sealed the deal. We knew he was a man we could work with - his relaxed "can-do" approach and professionalism meant that we were so happy to leave our wedding day in his capable hands. From day one, Nick & his team made it all so easy and the final result was sheer perfection. Rasa was just wonderful when we met her on the Friday before and, with almost zero instruction, made the venue look even better than we could have hoped in our wildest dreams and everything that we had managed to consider was exactly in its place! Sheer class!!And as for the day.... we arrived and the drinks were flowing, the Peasant team were marvellous - they were a fully fledged part of the party. The food was exquisite to say the least - many remarked that it was the best that they had ever had at a wedding. The whole thing ran so smoothly, the drinks were flowing and the craic was mighty!! And the ginger martinis...wow.We loved our day and can't thank Nick and his team enough for pulling everything together so brilliantly - they are the best at what they do! Can't recommend highly enough!!

The Pig and Butcher

St Mary's, Islington, 30-45£
21/09/2020: Really great Covid precautions.Had lovely service from Olivia. Absolute star.We had the sourdough starter, pork cowboy sharer, the chocolate pudding, meringue and some truffles. Everything was too notch, lovely portions. The pork was cooked to perfection and not as fatty as I thought it would be, real quality cut.Just a lovely venue, but definitely the attentive and smiley service really made this a 5/5 review.
14/09/2020: Quality Sunday lunch. The restaurant was full so booking is probably necessary. We were seated upstairs in a farmhouse kitchen style room, and each of us ordered a different roast: lamb, pork and beef. All three meals were excellent served with Yorkshire pudding and good roasties and veg. Good wine menu to choose from. Excellent service and a very enjoyable Sunday lunch.

Prawn on the Lawn

Mildmay, Islington, >100£
07/10/2020: SEATING - Dropping in for lunch today with my girlfriend and our 3 month old daughter in a buggy, we were made to feel a bit of a nuisance when told (quite dramatically) there was only one table suitable for us to sit regardless of there being no one else in the restaurant. After some unnecessary slight moving of the table that we were designated, we sat down. I briefly switched to the same side of the table as my girlfriend, to help sort out the baby/pram and the track and trace app we were told to download, i was then quickly and again quite dramatically told I wasn’t to move from my side of the table due to COVID, all with not a soul in the restaurant.UP SELLING - Regardless of this uncomfortable start we sat down and was given a choice of still or sparkling and the waiter looked surprised when we asked for tap. We then heard what turned out to be a robotic explanation of the menu by the waiter, which included a breakdown of how many Items we should order. If opting to eat small plates (not the very expensive other options) we were told to get at least 6 and 4 sides to accompany them. This obviously seemed excessive so we opted for three of each, which turned out to be plenty for both of us. We later heard a waitress advise a customer to get between 4-6 plates and 2-4 sides which seemed more accutate.FOOD/DRINK - A lager is a can the size of a Coke and cost nearly £6. Other than that we we’re surprised to find the signature prawn on the lawn dish was basically just smashed avocado on toast with prawns. Lovely but very underwhelming and unimaginative, As were the tuna and ‘spicy potatoes’. Which had some chilli and spring onion sprinkled on and not much else. The order in which the food came out also wasn’t great, offering the prawn and tuna quickly and the Sides (bread and butter, lettuce and potatoes) quite a bit later, almost to encourage a further order.SERVICE CHARGE PRESSURE - We finished what was an overpriced but decent meal and asked for the bill. The waiter then told us about a £1 charity donation which was fine. He then made a very obvious Point of saying the service charge was not included and when we got the card machine he waited looking at us to tell him how much we wanted to pay which was very awkward and assuming. We left a tip and would’ve anyway but didn’t want to feel like we had to.In addition, the clearly priced and quite garish ‘east London’ style merchandise stuck up on the wall, felt like both an attempt to get more money out of customers and quite a leap from the very expensive menu. Will not be going back again I’m afraid. Not a nice experience.
26/09/2020: This is a gem of a restaurant. Great service and such delicious and well presented small plates. We had the prawns, seared tuna, monkfish satay, red mullet, tomato salad, mackerel, spicy potatoes and sourdough bread. Enjoyed very much sitting at counter watching the two chefs at work in the tiny kitchen. Tried a glass of sparkling rose from Padstow which was pleasing. Would love to come again. My only tips for improvement would be (1) margarita a bit watery and weak - ice to drink ratio not right! (2) restaurant could be warmer. Ladies like to wear evening tops.... I had to keep my coat on all evening.

02/10/2020: Really tasty burger - would recommend getting gravy to dip your chips in! Staff were super friendly and I felt comfortable with the social distancing etc. In place!

The Quality Chop House

Clerkenwell, Islington, 30-45£
09/08/2020: We came here few days ago and it was so nice!We ate amazing potatoes in confit with chicken, they were so mouth-watering and delicate! I really advise you to try them if you go there! The waiter was kind and also the desserts were really lovely!
28/07/2020: Excellent robust food including game in season - their grouse is deliciously cooked with tasty sides and sauces. The staff are friendly without being in your face. There is a good choice of wines and the dark wooden and tiled decor make for a relaxed dining experience.

Coach and Horses

Clerkenwell, Islington, 20-30£
04/10/2020: Have visited a couple times for their Sunday Roasts and never disappointed! The atmosphere is very casual and relaxed, first visit in the dinning room next to the garden beautiful light and second visit upstairs that’s cosy.Food is great! Would recommend the Porterhouse but the general food menu is fresh and well designed. Friendly prices given the portion sizes and their meat range/quality. Service was good for a Sunday afternoon but would say a bit more focus on table is needed from waiter as took some time for orders to be taken and waitress seemed a bit reserved to go and do check backs / take extra drinks orders where we could have ordered couple extra items. (little details!) Overall clean venue, nice social distancing measures in place and attentive management same as their reservations team! I’m sure we will return!

Oak & Pastor

Junction, Islington
01/08/2020: We’re starting to really enjoy coming here! There’s space to sit outside at the front and hidden out the back, both of which are lovely spaces in the sun. Inside is decorated nicely and there’s a great range of drinks on offer. Food is also nice, I recommend the chicken burger with jerk coleslaw, and the chips are delicious. The staff are very able, even if it’s busy. You can see other customers here know each other and it has nice little community vibe going on. A “local pub” but not as you know it.
20/07/2020: We visited for Sunday lunch yesterday 19th July 2020. The service was really friendly and the lunch was amazing, the roast lamb and the beef were fantastic, a very large portion and delicious and the price was also excellent £16 each. Definitely great value for money.

The Castle

Clerkenwell, Islington, <20£
22/09/2020: We had lunch here today and went for a cheese burger and a pint. Thought it was a bit pricey for lunch, but the burger was good. The selection of food was quite limited though.
15/09/2020: Probably the worst pub I’ve been to during lockdown. I’ve been to this pub on an number of occasions over the past 5 years and it’s been ok but but trip on last night (15/09/20) was by far the worst. Purely because the female member of staff she was very rude, grumpy and clearly did not want custom. Like I said I’ve been in the area for 5 years and she alone has changed my perception on the pub. The one tun it is.

Look Mum No Hands

Bunhill, Islington
29/08/2020: Fell upon this bike-shop-cum-cafe-cum-restaurant by accident on Thursday and was so intrigued I had to go in. What an incredible concept I love it! Chose the smoked salmon and avocado brioche which came in good time for lunch and was the probably the nicest sandwich I have eaten this year. If you're in the area check it out.
