Went for a family Sunday roast here last week and OMG it did not disappoint! We had chicken and beef, both of which were cooked to perfection with all the usual trimmings - the potatoes and gravy were exceptionally phenomenal! My youngest had the burger which was equally as good. The guy who served us, Michael, was brilliant, so polite and friendly. Answered all our questions and was very accommodating with our different requests, nothing was a problem at all and he was so great with the kids too. Would 100% recommend this place and will definitely be coming back for more!

This used to have a wide selection of pub food that was good value. They have scrapped the menu and replaced it with a Thai only menu. While the food was OK, I miss the choice and know that I will not be visiting again for food.

With the change of management - Fullers evacuating 3 pubs in Croydon in 2024 and handing over to Whelan's - one may have hoped for bright things ahead for this lovely pub and former bank. Previously, food was a disappointment, but staff were friendly and mostly attentive. Now there's a flippancy to the bar servers, and the atmosphere is missing from what is normally a good Whelan's experience. Food is now run by a separate entity within the pub and is Thai; a bit costly and meagre portions for the money, but tasted ok. I wish they would take the time to clean the tables between custoemrs as other pubs manage - sticky food marks and drink rings are not a good sight to repeat customers nor new ones. Could be so much better.

The pub was a Fuller's Ale and Pie pub, but has recently changed hands. The pub still seems to major on Fuller's beers, but the food has changed to an excellent Thai menu. This is now one of the best pubs in Croydon.

What a crying shame. Though by no means a regular I used to like to come in for a meal and a drink on my own. I did not know the whole food set up had changed. Tonight I was met by a Thai lady who showed me straight to a table, did not explain that I should have bought a drink first. In fact she couldn't explain as she had no English. She left me for far too long with the menu. Being on my own I was 'tied' to the table with the bags I was carrying. A gentleman at a nearby table took pity and went to find a waitress to take my order, but not before explaining that I should have bought my drink first as the bar and the Thai food operate as separate entities. So I would have to pack up my belongings and struggle from the tight corner where I had been seated (classic treatment of a single diner!) just to get my drink. Thai lady came back to my table, couldn't understand my question about drinks so had to get a colleague. I couldn't hear 2nd Thai lady over the overload rugby on the TV and so couldn't explain anything, but by now I'm starving and still haven't ordered so I gave up and left. Sadly disappointed remembering how the food and service used to be.

The building occupied by this pub presents a serious presence where it sists in Croydon, but when you get inside, it does give you that feeling that its quite a bit smaller. Anyway, the place was a reasonable size with additional sitting upstairs. It was quite busy when were there so didn't chat to staff too much but they were still very pleasant. Lots of nooks and crannies on the ground floor and I would have to say probably not the place for a wheelchair, but that's my opinion. My Guinness was excellent as was my friend's Young's Original.

The door men created such a horrible atmosphere from the moment you approached the door complete chip on their shoulder ! demanding respect from people before they was allowed to enter. I Would never go back especially when they’re there. Everyone said exactly the same. They just wanted to cause trouble for anyone who wasn’t a regular. If it wasn’t for a family party I would have left. However I never put any money behind the bar. Such a shame they truly let this pub down!

Traditional and reliable real ale pub in central Croydon. A great selection of drinks and food available (including tradition pub mains, sandwiches and smaller snacks). There's a large upstairs space that used to boast a theatre - I'm not sure how it's used these days. Dropped in around 2pm for a Helles and something to eat. Had the Cod burger and chips which were fresh and delicious and arrived very quickly. Lunchtime in the middle of the week was fairly quiet and relaxing and the staff friendly and attentive. The food was great, had the roast dinner, very, very reasonably priced, I actually thought I was under charged! Only £16.95 for the beef, really fresh vegetables, and fabulous service. It would've been great if the sound was on for the tennis, but you can't have everything! The young lady who brought over my food was absolutely lovely, very friendly, and professional. There was a table of older men who where, as the day wore on, getting louder, and ruder with their language but she appeared unfazed and handled herself beautifully.

Very Bad Experience Wanted to spend a relaxed afternoon with friends - booked a table for four for 2 p.m. Went in and was shown the table which had been reserved for us after the staff checked their book - and another staff member said ‘table for four?’ We bought our drinks and ordered food. After half an hour whilst waiting for our food a female staff member came and told us very rudely that we had to move in five minutes because our table and the table next ours was reserved for a party of twelve at 3 p.m. - no suggestion of where we could go (all other tables were occupied). Explained that we booked and that table was given to us. She said rudely that was a miscommunication with the staff. By the way no other tables were reserved. A gentleman from another table came across and said he was leaving in five minutes we could have his table. We moved to the table offered to us. We spent almost four hours - No party of twelve arrived. Three young men sat there about 4 p.m watching TV. Had a word with the female staff member when leaving about her attitude to us - she was still very rude. Will not be returning to this pub - very bad customer service. She should definitely not be serving the public.

The change of ownership has done nothing to diminish the quality of the pub. It retains all the fine woodwork, a good selection of quality beer, and a decent menu of typical pub food. There are few enough pubs in the centre of Croydon these days, and even fewer good ones. The place is very nice, select, the staff is ok! We served fish and chips but it was not what we expected! First of all, the fish was not cod, the crust of the fish was a little raw on the inside, the crushed peas had too many herbs, the sauce had too much vinegar! Compared to another restaurant where I served the same food but at a price 2 times lower...it was not excellent at all, it was much better at George's! Maybe other types of food are better...that's all we tried!

Just have to add this review. So I bought a drink in there. I asked the mixed race lady to call me a cab from behind bar . She proceeded to do so but after 15 minutes of waiting I asked her could she possibly call the Cab station back and ask them how long she said no she won’t be doing that but her response was so blunt and rude. Other customers saw her response and was confused, because it was so rude and uncalled for , it’s like she had no training ! I was bit taken back by it but instead of arguing with her, I decided to opt in to the suggestion that the pen shall surely be mighter then my sword ! She was very very rude, and I would never go back ! Croydon is a trash! So her trashy attitude belongs right in place in there perfectly . It's a lovely pub with good food but for some inexplicable reason they've recently taken away the option to book tables online. No one wants to plan for an evening of drinks and dinner with a group of friends only to find there is no availability when you arrive. Not going to bother with the place till they bring table bookings back. They are definitely needed as it does get busy in there at certain times and you'll never get an opportunity to sit and eat otherwise.
