Found this place by chance whilst searching the net for b&bs in Basingstoke. How lucky we were-it's a little gem. Located right next to the River Lodden, it's an old mill which has been tastefully renovated so that it has lost none of its charm. The reception/bar area is tastefully dressed and the area leading down to the restraunt gave us a big surprise as all the old works of the mill were on display. The area outside had plenty of seating alongside the river bank. The accommodation of 12 rooms are situated in a quieter area away from the main building. Our room had a huge king size bed, plenty of storage and a big walk in shower. The room was very clean and tidy and we had a good sleep. We ate in the outer bar area and the food was top notch. The description pub grub does not do it justice. We had fish and chips and it was excellently cooked with a light, crisp batter-just as we like it. Breakfast was included in the room rate and again was excellent. We had the eggs benedict. Finally, and importantly a big thank you to the staff who were polite, attentive and friendly. Nothing was too much trouble, so a big 10/10 for them. Will definitely return and recommend it for sure.

This was our restaurant of choice for Christmas lunch this year. We eat out every Christmas and have done for a number of years, I have resigned myself to this being pretty much a roll of the dice for what the food and service will be like, despite how much you pay for the privilege. We booked a 12.30 time slot and arrived to an upbeat and jolly atmosphere with staff happily greeting on arrival, we were promptly shown to a lovely table and told who our server would be as well as pointed to a nice printed reminder of what our pre selected orders were. Izzy was our server for Christmas Day 2024 and she was delightful, professional and had a lovely sense of humour. Bread and dips brought out immediately. Dips were tasty and bread was warm and toasted. Yummy Starter I had scallop thermodor. He had salmon. Mum had pate. All tasty and well presented. Mains Turkey all round (obvs) turkey was moist and flavoursome. Tasty selection of vegetables and decent sized portions. Gravy was delicious! Desserts mine was poached pear was a little bit weird, cold and encrusted in a crumble that wasn’t sweet enough for my tooth. Pineapple bomb for him was sweet and lovely. Mum had generous cheese platter. All in we were (yes even mother) delighted with the lunch. Service was excellent and the food tasty and well presented. Easily the best Christmas lunch we have had in years! Would come back again. Thanks so no much to all the team today who made it run so smoothly and wanted to let you know we enjoyed so very much.

Many thanks to the staff at the King Charles for looking after us so well this Saturday when we had a buffet lunch for our local MS Group. The food and service were both excellent. and the conservatory provided a lovely environment. We have booked again for next year!

We decided on the spur of the moment to pop in for a meal as we were shopping in Wallingford. We were warmly welcomed and a table was found for us even though it was busy. Our meals were brought through quickly and were perfectly cooked, even my partners steak which he likes VERY rare. We were amazed how large the portions were too. A really nice meal at a good value price. We will be back.

I’m sorry but I really don’t know who has been writing such good reviews. Food was mediocre at best, if I had visited the toilet before ordering I would’ve never eaten in there! Disgustingly dirty! And all I kept thinking if the toilets and the place is dirty like this what on earth is the kitchen like! The whole place needs a clean it’s minging!! Yukkkk! Whoever you guys gave as a cleaner…they need firing. We paid our bill and went to the lamb down the road and everyone in there said how dirty it is. Wish we’d not read these good reviews would never have ate there! It’s like a greasy spoon cafe with expensive prices.

We like this restaurant but found the desserts very disappointing, Tiramisu & Banoffee pie are just cake very manufactured with artificial taste. Waiting staff work socks off & are lovely Decor needs an upgrade and owner could be more cheerful.

My son and I visited here today for lunch, we both ordered a first course and a Sunday roast for the main course, my son having beef and myself lamb. Both of our first courses were good apart from the fact that the menu said the baked camembert was with chorizo and my son received bacon lardons instead and my scallops were without seasoning with none provided on the table. The roast main meals arrived and looked fine, I tried my lamb to find I was tasting beef so called the manager over who was serving tables, he told me it was definitely lamb but may taste like beef as it had beef gravy, I said I had never tasted flavourless lamb meat that tasted of beef and if so why would the chef cover it in beef gravy and not lamb gravy! His reply was 'so you want me to waste this food'? My reply was 'I am unhappy with the tasteless lamb but would be happy to have a chicken roast to replace it to which I was told 'No, for if I were to bring you a chicken roast you will say it is not chicken'. Unbelievably rude! I was forced to eat just the side vegetables without the potatoes as my plate had been removed. The dumb thing is, we of course asked for the lamb roast charge to be removed from the bill when if he, like any eating establishment would with an unhappy customer, gone ahead and replaced the three poor quality slices of lamb with a chicken we would have paid the full bill. My further research shows that a lamb roast that tastes like beef is lamb that is particularly lean, poorly prepared, or from an older sheep (mutton), which can result in a milder, less "gamey" flavour that is closer to beef in taste. If you are thinking of going here for a meal I would completely avoid it with the poor quality meat and the managers bad way of handling unhappy customers forcing them leave hungry and angry.

Sadly today’s visit was not to the usual standard I have experienced on previous visits to this lovely pub. Service was the most disappointing. Having made a reservation we were seated and given menus and drinks, then ignored. After about 10 mins a group of 4 unreserved were seated next to us, served drinks and menus and then there order taken whilst we were still ignored……. Not good service, naturally not impressed. When our food finally arrived very disappointing. Fish & Chips have always been excellent on previous visits but today greasy and soggy uncooked batter, fish with batter removed was fine. This was pointed out when the table was cleared and a small discretionary refund was on the bill when I paid, but not mentioned by any of the staff. Hopefully this was a one off situation and “normal service” will be resumed. I will certainly think twice about a return visit, shame as always been impressed by friendly service and quality of food.
