The staff here are fabulous! So welcoming! The food, lunchtime only, is fresh and very much worth trying. The ham is fresh off the bone, the mixed ploughman’s is very fresh and the sandwiches are excellent with crisps and fresh salad. Live music/quiz on a Tuesday is great fun. We’ve been using this pub for years and it’s consistent. It’s what my husband calls a proper pub

It has been 15years since we try to visit this place and finally its time has came. Upon arriving, I found the place inside smaller that pictures posted. The beer, we ordered was lovely, but expensive £8 for a pint and a half 😲 The atmosphere was typical British pub same with the smell of ale 🍺 . They offer a good variety of ale though 👏. We found that evening there was an event, so most of the tables were reserved. They have limited time when you can order cooked food, so be aware - check on their website as it varies. Otherwise you get a pack of crisps instead of plate with chips. All in all good traditional pub, but nothing special. Good for a quick drink and a walk in local area 😉

Popped in for lunch on a Saturday, they serve what I call good traditional pub grub, not a huge menu but what there was plenty of choice for us (e.g. scampi, chilli, baguettes, ploughmans etc). We both had the scampi which was a good size portion of everything, the other food that came out looked nice too. It's very traditional inside, a real charm and much prefer that to some of the souless modern places to eat, we will return.

Stumbled upon this fantastic pub while needing to kill some time. It is a quirky classic pub. Loads of interesting beer/brewery memorabilia, but it's it in your face. Great views as far as the IOW. But most importantly, a well chosen selection of 7 really well kept real ales. And an actual underground cellar.

Popped in, and great one way system in the pub, Track & Trace on every table, very welcoming staff, and of course a lovely pint of draft Abbott. This is the place for quality Ales managed by the one and only Andy, who is an Artisan in the Ale keeping world. Good to see Ali. Ali put herself out during Covid supplying QA hospital Free of Charge with Condiments which although sealed were easy for patients to open. I know I was a Covid-19 patient. This pub is where The Trolley Bus Manager lived and the Trolley buses Terminated. Steeped in history, including Brickwoods Signs and photos locally of a bygone era. You will not be disappointe, but remember Food only on Lunchtime sessions or Saturday morning breakfast, excellent Ploughmans with crisp spicey onions. Sit on the terrace and Gaze over Portsmouth and The Isle of Wight (Fragil Rock)

Wonderful traditional historic pub with a large selection of fine real ales. Very friendly welcoming staff and landlady. I especially like the fact that there are no flat screen TV's. A lovely traditional English pub. Very cosy inside plus outside area for meals/drinks al fresco. I stopped by for a drink as I was lost trying to find my way to Lee on The Solent and my phone battery had died. The charming lady and gentleman charged up my phone while I was having my drink and then wrote me out instructions of how to get to Lee on The Solent. The views around and about are magnificent. A short distance and the views over Portsmouth are panoramic - magical at night and just as good, but different, when I went back the next day in daylight. A perfect stop-off if you fancy a look at old the old forts overlooking the city.

The George is a wonderful , old timely feel pub with great views over Portsmouth. The beer selection is uncomplicated but kept very well and there should be something to please all types of drinkers here - especially real ale fans. The snacks are great and include Twiglets, Bacon Fries, dry roasted peanuts and some fancy beef jerky if you're feeling flush. The atmosphere is what makes this place so special. The George is cosy, has no television screens or fruit machines to distract people from it's original purpose - a place to meet, drink, talk or simply relax. The wifi works a treat for people that love their phones and they have a super music quiz and live band on the regular. I can't speak about the food as that's not why I personally go to the pub - but the landlord, landlady and staff are always courteous and kind. I've seen a couple of negative reviews here about not being to order food after 2pm (as per pub policy) or the landlord preferring not to have children inside the pub of an evening - this seems completely fair to me, but people don't like being told what to do so will post negatively regardless. All in all, if you're looking for a traditional, cosy old pub, with kind landlords and a lovely view - this is a great choice.

I popped in to the George for a spot of lunch (while visiting), after having moved away a few years ago, sadly it has changed and not for the better.First of all, Andy the Landlord was very friendly and welcoming along with one of the barmaids (sorry can't remember her name but has been there for years), can't be said for the Landlady or the other barmaid. Prior to the Landlady and other barmaid turning up I ordered a ploughman's after remembering how good they were and some chips, the chips 10/10, shame the same couldn't be said about the ploughman's, the apple, pear and grapes were well past their use by date, brown, and the bad bits cut off! The chutney tasted awful and the salad had a slimy dressing over it! the bread (stale) felt like it had been warmed in the oven to try and freshen it up, so sad, but I am sure when they looked at how much of the lunch was left would have realised it shouldn't have been sent out.Why didn't I say anything? well they had a sign saying about reviews on trip advisor, so here I am.The pub looks shabby, and had an odour of damp/mustiness about it, such a shame, back in the day it was lovely, they have made a huge effort with the hanging baskets which look beautiful but for me that is where the nice things end!Would I go back if in the area? No, far too many other nice places to visit I am afraid.

Great place to have a properly kept Ales, have a laugh and people watch and read feedback on trip advisor, Stunned by 13_marie who wrote 5 reports to trip advisor 3rd March. Looked at one I think it was The Horse & Jockey at Curbridge, she had been 'hear' as opposed to 'here', does that mean she is good at tracking as she keeps her 'ear' to the ground, anyway moving on from this rare piece of feedback, I return to The George, Andy the Landlord (No he doesn't look like Jimmy Edwards) has surpassed himself, and got a very good Porter Stout in from Cheriton last week, 4.2% and very palatable, luckily I had a designated driver, sorted. Just a word of advice to any punters, if leaving your car to collect after a session, run it (not the car) by the Landlord & Landlady so that they are aware and they can tell you if you have left it wrongly parked. Excellent varietry of Ales the best of which (in my opinion come from Irving Brewery Portsmouth) Red Plum is a Christmas winter faviourite guest Ale, Ali, realises the importance of good quality ales, hence the pub is a drinkers pub, if you liken that to say The Golden Lion Southwick, where they promote inferior ales but mark them up, no contest. As Ali says a little profit but vast turn over is better than a quick buck. The Saturday breakfast until 2pm is not to be missed. The pickled Onions are so spicey they blow your head off so another pint required, same goes for Sunday from 12pm Roast potatoes, cheese and Onion on the bar, and another pint. Look no further.

Firstly I'd like to put "tivvytown, Southsea" right who said that "This pub is not quite old enough to be an historic or period pub and not modern enough to be smart or trendy and as a result has little atmosphere." I suggest that they look into the history of the pub which is over 300 years old dates back to the late 1700's when it was two cottages. In it's life it was made into the Old Widley Fire Station, it was also stables & change over point for carriage horses as well as a meeting place for senior military officers. It's an old fashioned pub with alot of quirkiness about it. The beer is standard & not over priced the food is what I would class as edible pub food with no frills. I must admit I did feels as though I was intruding as it obviously has it's regulars which is nice to see.I would go again for a drink & the views.

Listened to a few the other week who discussed about the decor of the pub, they really need to look this pubs history, as it is not good to discharge a weapon from waist height let alone in their case whilst the weapon was holstered and it went straight through their foot. I say this as 'tivvytown' was quite obviously looking for attention, shame the spelling of 'restaurant'' in their numerous previous write ups has not been addressed thats the problem with dealing with the illerate in our society, no breeding or understanding of the world and/or its compilation. This is the quite obviously the type of stock we should not breed from. The George is excellent in the way it keeps its ales and food presentation. As said shame Tripadvisor is used to downgrade an establishment in this way. But there you go none so 'queer as folk'.

This pub is not quite old enough to be an historic or period pub and not modern enough to be smart or trendy and as a result has little atmosphere. There is a good selection of real ale as well as the usual draught and bottled beers and the ale is kept well enough. The food selection is quite comprehensive but over priced and of average to poor quality ; over £5 for potato skins which turned out to be 5 small pieces of skin slivers and a LOT of salad. One of our party had a jacket potato which was served on a greasy plate and had a hair in it. I would love to see this pub thrive but to do so, it needs to decide what it wants be and revise its decor and food quality.

Love the pub, love the culture. Brilliant location could and should be a 5*****. Alas opening times on a Monday are "stick ya thumb in the air and guess", why not just advertise true opening times (?) and during week so keen for extra drinks late at night but not so keen to allow reasonable drinking up time, no matter if 23:20 and 10 elderly gentleman left in bar. Unfortunately left to junior staff to close. I can quote "Tom" who has worked there for 4 years, tonight, "we always turn lights out light in loos before 23:20..." I'm not a health and safety fan, but surely just common sense and decency before we exit is allowed? I quoted this to Tom, alas Tom doesn't understand. Discussions with landlady in progress, I will of course update here!Great selection of ales but service.... On the whole tbh OUTSTANDING. I met a friend here for lunch and her meal of gammon, egg and chips looked delicious. I asked about the soup of the day and was told it was cream of vegetable... well, I'm almost positive that what I was served was a cuppa soup. At £4.95 it was very disappointing.

Always lived in the area of the George and visited on many occasions and seen many new faces behind the bar over the years , It has always been a popular place and it has always had a certain ambience and greeting feel about it.I certainly have no reservations in recommending this venue where you have a choice of real ales and are greeted by a member of Staff who seems only too happy to serve with a smile.

I like a traditional English pub, and this is as cosy and as friendly as they come. Awesome selection of ales and the view from the top of ports down hill is brilliant

Myself and my husband moved to this area a year ago (after both of us being brought up here as children), and absolutely love this pub. Wonderful atmosphere, pleasant people, no louts, amazing traditional pub and feel at home sitting in the lovely traditional olde English public house. Hats off to you for keeping it this way - we love it :) the only downside for me is I love a good Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc - not served here, and over the past year constantly changing wines! Ok if you're a spririt or beer drinker, nothing changes, but I like my wine and sometimes the wine is a bit hit and miss!

Back in the olden days all pubs were like this, slightly shabby and outdated decor, unusual packets of snacks behind the bar, well kept ales and good pub food served at lunchtime only. Fortunately they don't actually serve Carlesberg, and the range of ales on offer is large enough to satisfy even the biggest of CAMRA snobs. In this globalised world of chain pubs and Wetherspoons faux heritage decor pubs like The George are becoming an endangered species. If all local pubs were like this place the world would be a much better place.

We recently had to arrange for a small gathering of friends, 10 persons to be precise. The George was recommended to us, and how pleased we were. Alison the Landlady was exceptionally helpful over the event. It was to be held late morning , too early for lunch. She arranged a large selection of sandwiches and savouries, bacon butties too plus tea and coffee at an extremely fair price.Prior to this my husband and I had visited to check out the pub and enjoyed choosing a meal from the blackboard. The choices are excellent, Ploughmans, superb sandwiches well garnished, plus a good choice of hot dishes. The pub itself has a cosy, olde world atmosphere, such a change from the modern style of the many chain hostelries which abound.

Having moved to Widley in 2013 have been meaning to visit the pub for a drink or food for the last 3 years. Really impressed. Staff and even some of the customers are very friendly and welcoming. Excellent choice of real ales with updates on Facebook as I've now found.Food only served 12-2pm Mon-Sat but the menu looks great and very reasonably priced. Have already planned a return visit.

One of the few pubs you can speak to strangers who all make you feel very welcome, bar staff that interact and can give back what they are given in banter, crispy, hot pickled onions with a massive ploughmans . Plus a hearty breakfast on a Saturday morning. Fantastic and well kept ales. Downside, its like sardines on a Friday evening from about 1830-2030 as everyone tells what they have been up to during the week, or end up sorting the world out for the Government. Whats missing to make it totally ideal is an underground NBC bunker for when Obama and Putin kick off about who shot what down and where, although you could always substitute the cellar for that. Pub food pub prices.

Popped in for Sunday lunch only to find they don't serve food on Sundays. Seems strange for a pub in this day and age, but if that's the way they like it then so be it. It seemed a bit of an old mans pub and not one to take the kids to, from what we did see.

We went to this lovely old pub for breakfast last Saturday after hearing so much about and we were not disappointed. We were met by a very friendly member of staff that took our order and told us to take a table. The breakfast was presented quickly and what a lovely plate of food it was. The tea was nice and strong and flavoursome. All together, fantastic food, fantastic value and well worth a visit. We will be back for some more soon. Thank you.

Yes it is awkwardly positioned, but that's because of its history the Main A3 was outside the front door complete with Trams 50 years or so ago. Once you realise it is only 1/2 mile East of The Churchillian Pub on Portsdown Hill. You realise that you also have good views. Yes The Churchillian has a larger view of the Solent, but The George excels in its limited food and Beer. Remember No food Saturday afternoons. Staff are very good and know there Ales. Good Guest Ales as well.

The George is shoe horned into a small plot enclosed by roads as a result of the realignment of the A3. This results in a rather sm all car park. The decor is the traditional brown wood, cream walls and drab regency stripe and is a bit drab and dated. That said, the staff were young and pleasant, they serve a good range of beers, and my Stilton ploughmans was very good. My wife's tuna baked potatoe was, however, only average.I will certainly look in again but only when passing.

Just had the best Stilton ploughman's at the George Inn, followed by some lovely ale! Great choice of ales (I went for a fave - a pint of Pride) but also had Adnams Broadside, Irving Frigate (guest ale from local brewery) London Pride and a couple of others.Lovely lunch, thank you!

This is a lovely idyllic and traditional pub, the staff are very friendly. I can recommend their ploughmans for lunch and they do a smashing breakfast on Saturday morning. Its sad to see such a hateful review over something as basic as an ID check, without which there could be hefty fines and possible loss of license! Its not a new law! Just make sure you you have ID particularly when it may be needed!I was asked for ID in weatherspoons recently, as a 49 year old I was extremely pleased to show it.

The nasty management has to obey the law therefore I believe your comment is ridiculous, everyone knows now in this day and age it's illegal to serve a person without any proof of age and with the correct identification. I'm sure the management would rather keep there job and the pubs license to carry on serving to the rest of the community. Remember to take your ID to the next pub you move on to because you may have the same problem if not you may have a lot of underage drinkers in there which will I'm sure make the atmosphere there second to none. The George inn is a cracking pub and the management and staff all do a fab job making the pub enjoyable for all with great quizzes and more! Always feel welcomed!

Very cheerful, very good range of beers, and staff more than happy to allow you to try. You can bring your dogs in. Very sociable place given that it has a road around it literally. Food Yes lunchtimes, not evenings and not a Sunday Lunch. Well worth the money and Well worth a visit especially if you have just been on Portsdown Hill, and realised that 'The Churchillian' is for those not in the know. The George is 1/4 mile East same road.

Lady fell down then stairs and was still drinking all night, at least Pam was told coins not buy anymore drinks as one of our fringes was apparently drunk. After ask them to show us the cctv to prove so they said it wasn’t possible So unfortunately weatherspooons are now racist so will not be returning

We ordered two Jacket Potatoes and prawns and onefish and chips. The jacket pototoes were overcoooked and blackskins. The fish and was atrocious it had obviously been battered and fries and then re-heated. We should have complained to get a refund, but we had to catch our train. We generally never complain, but the food was rubbish. Will not be eating there ever again

We were given a choice of tables and picked one near the back. Quite slow to take our order (comped us a beer) which was for warm breads to start and two pan-fried chicken with hassleback potatoes and tarragon jus. The food was very tasty. Service from our waitress was good, but the two waitresses were doing all the work, whilst the three waiters did a lot of walking around looking busy. When we asked for the bill, it was explained that they had a problem with their system and couldn’t charge to the room. I explained that we had a F&B credit so needed to charge to the room. Took about 20 minutes to resolve, but got there eventually! £76 including 12.5% service charge.

They always leave the butter underneath or inside the hot food box so that is melted and liquid every time. Brainless behaviour
