Had afternoon tea at The Hidden Monkey on a whim. Didn't need to book. The staff were attentive and friendly and the food was fantastic; unfussy, well presented and damn tasty. I am an experienced home baker and I think their cakes are outstanding. Lovely staff, fabulous food, what more do you need?

We had a lovely meal and Sunday lunch here and they were both excellent! The food was to a high standard and the staff were all warm and friendly. We stayed in our motorhome on the pubs site which was also great! The pub is handy for the park and ride into York. A highly recommended 5*****

Had the soup and a sandwich served with a nice cup of tea.The salmon and cream cheese sandwich was lovely but the tomato soup was unusual,it was like eating a bowl of chopped tomatoes ! Would have been 5 stars if the soup had been better.

So pleased to have found this delightful tea room with its friendly owner and staff. We had coffee and homemade cake which was absolutely delicious. Personal service and lovely surroundings with dainty china crockery which makes everything extra special. We wish the lovely owner and her staff every future success

A mid week lunch visit saw us choosing the sandwich and cup of soup options. Superb choice of fillings; the goats cheese was scrumptious. We were served by Richard who was welcoming, friendly and very efficient. We have been served by him previously at the sister pub, the Punchbowl and he always is first class. A credit to both pubs.

Wonderful service with a smile from our server Parker - nothing was too much trouble and she was personable yet professional throughout. Easy to find a place to sit. The extension to the restaurant is lovely - thinking of leaving the dogs at home and sample their menu. Thanks for a lovely visit. Kate, Phil, Finn and the hounds Henry & Trooper.

We visited The Tavern for an evening meal for a large group. The staff were amazing with such a big order and were very friendly and accommodating. They were very dog friendly and had some really good gluten free options (steak pie to name one which was delicious). Due to the large table and our food taking a bit longer than the average order, (understandably with a table of 15) we were given Prosecco on the house for the group to celebrate a members birthday which was an extra special touch that was much appreciated. A great atmosphere and we highly recommend!

Quant little place, and they've worked really hard to create a cracking little cafe. We visited via Pennine Cruises, moored up by the last lock and then a 15-minute walk. We only had snacks (all nice). Only slight criticism would be a towel in the one toilet, which is perhaps not the most hygienic thing to do. Coffee nice, but for me, I needed it to be a little stronger. Would definitely come back.

Did not stay at the hotel, but went there for Sunday lunch, as there was an offer on. Sounded better than it was in reality. 30% off mains. But then you get a pub like this which charges extra for ‘sides’ which you expect to be part of the lunch. Never before known to have to pay £1.29 for two very small stuffing balls, or £3.50 plus for a cauliflower cheese. Oh and sides nor desserts included in the deal. Don’t forget ‘mains only’. For dessert a small slice of lemon tart for £7.50. Oh yes and cherry compote rather than the advertised berry compote. I don’t like Cherries. But to cap it all I would expect a biscotti biscuit with the coffee, not a custard cream! As to the pub itself. Tired. Chairs with worn seats, the conservatory overlooking a scrufffy car park and industrial units. Just when you think it can’t get worse the waitress brings out a bottle of red wine and 3 glasses to the next table. She placed the glasses with her fingers inside the glasses. No wonder the ladies asked for the wine glasses to be clean! So over £60 for a mediocre meal for two. Yes we did get £10 off (£70 without the deal) , but definitely not worth it and we won’t be back.

Ideally located near the rail station and amusements across from the North Beach . They have a large range of food available from a basic sausage sarnie , full English breakfast to fantastic sea food platters . I would never consider going anywhere else .
