We were visiting Sewerby House, and in need of refreshment, called in to the cafe. To say we were disappointed is probably an understatement. The cafe has a captive audience, but needs to get it`s act together. We only wanted coffee & cake, there were umpteen uncleared tables, granted it was fairly busy, but not unduly so. You order at the counter, where I was served by a young man, with zero personality, i placed our order, & then moved down, to the service are. Again another staff member with zero personality, tried to insist, I had ordered tea & hot chocolate, when my order was cappuccino & caramel latte, on production of my receipt, he finally relented. I returned to our table, my wife was beginning to think I had done a runner. I have to say, the coffee was just awful, no taste, no substance, it was so bad we left our cups, after two mouthfuls. I think they need to take a long hard look at themselves, & up their game. By the way, they charge £1.10 for a shot of syrup, in coffee, I have never paid more than 60p.

We visited this establishment over the weekend….and we wish had not! But the first place we saw had no customers (even though it looked nice from outside) so we came across this place and as it seemed quite busy, we decided to give it a try. Well what a mistake that turned out to be! Uncomfortable / too low seating, chaotic ordering system and messy looking menu, slow, inflexible service and most importantly, the food and drinks we ordered were all horrible! Milkshake was bland, tea was like dishwater, coffee was too strong and the food was burnt/greasy. Apart from all that, it was marvellous! Seriously, avoid this place folks - there’s plenty of other food/drink establishments nearby.

Sadly this hotel is now badly managed, unwelcoming atmosphere and decor. unloved and uncared for. The bare minimum being done. The hotel is not clean. All carpets around hotel not regularly clean. Dining area and bar untidy and dirty. Broken things and random items just dumped around hotel. Indoor/outdoor windows dirty. Only staff there were young waitress, young bar girl and a young cook. Noone in charge and apparently Manager away so told email Saram hotels as they unable to deal with my complaints. I would have asked for money back and left but noone to make that decision!!! Had to endure shoddy place and staff instead. Noone cares what this place looks like. My room not clean and old yellowy stains on duvet cover. Only the view from my bedroom was pleasant.

Recently buried my mother in law and had the wake in the Avenue (Mother in Laws request), the staff were absolutely fantastic and couldn't do enough, the food was excellent. We have been a few times for family meals and the food has always been very good, would recommend booking as it does get busy at times. Nice atmosphere and friendly staff.

Lovely cafe upstairs, quite busy on a sunny day. We ordered Meze for one and a Fish and Chips. The waiter asked if I wanted bread and butter with that, so I said yes. Really nice food arrived no complaints there. With drinks, the total was about £44 which was about right. Looking at the receipt, the bread and butter was charged at £2.95! That was for a single slice of brown bread, sliced diagonally. £2.95 for a slice of bread!!! Ridiculous. Sadly, they didn't get a tip because I felt stupid paying three quid for that.

Ordered an oat latte only to be served one with cow's milk (which I was unfortunately only able to confirm after a few confusing mouthfuls). The waitress did apologise but having been vegan for over 20 years the "that was my bad" didn't really cut it. Was then charged £3.50 for two slices of plain toast. The staff are friendly enough but the service and light flickering need a good talking to.

We had a wonderful two night stay at Bagdale Hall, lovely bedroom with a four poster bed, the room was spacious and had a lovely bathroom, the Hall is only 5 mins walk to Whitby town so could leave the car in their car park behind the hotel, staff very pleasent and helpful with a few ghost stories thrown in, unfortunately never saw any ghosts because the bed was so comfy we slept through the night, breakfast included and was delicious, loved every minute of our stay at this unique hotel

We popped in for some hot chocolate and tray bake while out exploring the local area. We walked along a short country path from Great Ayton, where we were staying. It was grey overcast afternoon and the rain was threatening, so we were glad to break up our walk and get some energy for the walk back. Nice modern venue, with friendly staff in a lovely location. Our treats were great too. Look forward to popping back in the next time we are in the area.

Service was excellent, loved the train .. but let down by the food, the 5 bean portion for breakfast, accompanied the smallest mushrooms ever, tasteless sausages and dry bacon…nothing like the photographs….quite why beans were so rationed, was beyond us, as the photograph showed a fair portion of beans.

Cannot believe reviews from Dan P, Tracey H and Paul Sanderson, £18 for a starter and main course is not expensive unless you usually eat at wetherspoons or similar. Food is excellent, staff are excellent. If you want more meat on the carvery they are more than happy to give it to you, all you need to do is ask. Keep up your good work chequers inn.
