Stayed here 2 nights in our motorhome with a perfect parking place behind the pub, with a trickling waterfall behind. Had some great food & drink - warning the big breakfast is Very large!!! Our favourite Timothy Taylor on offer as well. Feiendly staff & clientele. Ideal spot for visiting the Piece Hall as we were at a gig Fri night - 10 minute walk away.

One one hand this is a ramshackle pub with an indoors that has nothing to wrote home about, next to a little river with junk in where the beer garden is basically in a car park. However, there is a quirky vibe to the place, and it sits in a classic West Yorkshire landscape of Industrial Revolution era chimneys and buildings. It's also a calm and peaceful location with only the sounds of the river, and there is plenty of greenery around as well. We brought kids for an ice cream, which went down well, and they had a play on the small playground while the adults sat in the sun by the river. Didn't try the rest of the food. Basically, it's interesting, and has points of difference.

This pub has an amazing menu. Unfortunately, the quality of the food is a little disappointing. Portions are large but the ingredients are far from high quality. A place worth a visit as the bar staff are friendly and there is a good choice of Timothy Taylors and Pennine ales. Plus 5 different draft lagers, Guinness and draft cider. You will need your big coat if the fire is not lit.

We were visiting Halifax and decided to Google pubs local to the town centre as we intended to call after shopping to have lunch somewhere - this pub popped up in the search and had a good rating so we called in. Halifax were playing a match at home so all the tables were pretty much taken, but it wasn't far off kick off time so we hung about and waited (about 10 minutes) for a table to become available.....we ordered our drinks and the landlady (?) allocated us a table, my husband went to the bar and ordered food - we had about a 15/20 minute wait. I had the meat and potato pie with chips and mushy peas and my husband had the mixed grill with chips......the portions were very generous and the food was absolutely beautiful, my hubby was very pleased that his steak in the mixed grill was cooked exactly how he'd asked for it (you don't often get asked how you like your steak on a mixed grill in my experience) The chips were chunky home made chips with the skin on, my pie was absolutely divine - I can honestly say that it's been the best pie I've ever eaten, the chunks of meat were substantial and the pastry was beautiful - as was the delicious gravy....you could taste that it had been made with the meat stock - my hubby's mixed grill had very generous portions of meat - a large thick pork chop, a whole chicken breast, an excellent quality sausage, a large piece of gammon etc - well worth the money in my opinion, the food is absolutely spot on - compliments to the chef !!

Booked a table for 4 pm we ordered our drinks and food. We appreciate that is was a Sunday but it wasn’t that busy. The starters took around an hour before they arrived, nobody apologised or spoke to us to say they were running behind. We ordered garlic mushrooms served with sourdough bread, when they arrived the mushrooms were covered in orange cheese, the bread was soggy grey looking with seeds in. My son opted for the Jack Daniel burger, he couldn’t eat it as it tasted of pure alcohol. When asked how the meal was my husband said it was poor and to be fair, the young girl did ask if we wanted to speak to the manager to do anything about it. At this point we had been there over 2 hours, we just wanted to pay and go. We used to come here regularly and not been in a while, the place has gone down hill and unfortunately, we will not be returning.

This pub has gone seriously downhill and now is extremely poor value for money and a very unpleasant experience from what used to be a great pub with food. I had Moroccan spiced kebab on flatbread with roast potatoes. There was about 4 huge outer lettuce leaves 2 slices of cucumber and quarter of a tomato. There were 5 small half roast potatoes. But the real disappointment was the flatbread that had 2 large lettuce leaves filling the bread with 5 small pieces of slightly burnt chicken amounting to about a third of a chicken breast plus 5 wafer thin pieces of steak about 1 cm wide and 4 cms long that were at least 65% fat and gristle and totally inedible. The whole thing was awful. I tried to speak to the young girl at the bar but she was too busy flirting with a group of boys at the bar. This disgusting food that was very poor quality cost £14.50 and being honest was not worth £7.00. It’s such a pity because this used to be a decent pub with good value for money food but no more I would avoid h to his pub like we all had to avoid Covid

I wanted to take my wife out for her birthday and found this little pub off a back street. The atmosphere was amazing and full of character with locals chatting in the background felt very comfortable and relaxed. The food was outstanding and very tasty and even better value. I ordered the Shears Supreme burger expecting a small burger but what came out the kitchen was this huge towering burger and chunky skin on chips. My wife had the chicken roast with giant Yorkshire which was giant in every sense of the word. Let’s just say we filled our boots and still had leftovers. Their food was so tasty and fresh. I cannot recommend this pub enough. 10/10

We went to this pub for lunch with a group of friends. We were asked to order our meals in advance from the menu on the website. The food was very disappointing, vegetables were over cooked, the belly pork was extremely fatty and tough and with no crackling and the portion was small, the soup was bland, the gammon was very fatty. Worst of all though was that when we came to pay, each of the main courses was about £3 more than advertised on the website. We checked the printed menu in the pub and it showed the higher prices. We tried to argue that having been asked to order in advance from the menu on the website we should be charged the prices shown on the website. However this was rejected completely. Needless to say we won't be going back!!

MORE AT TripAdvisor

This is less a case of the place being dirty, or the food having flies around it (as other reviews have mentioned). It's more about the owner and how they treat both staff and customers. The owner, an abusive women who will openly say that staff who are tired (an hour before their shift ends) shouldn't be working, as well as aggresively attacking customers who either defend staff or ask questions, is essentially a movie villian. I really wish I was making this up but she's the least welcoming landlord I've ever met, and apparently treats her staff like crap. I remember talking to one of the bar staff here and they were open about their worries heading into winter given the cost of energy and supplies (as to whether the place would even remain open). Given my experience down there, as much as I don't want someone to be out of a job, I would hope it does close just to stop the owner from her abusive and borderline criminal ways (given the employment rights act). While the place does cater to a clearly limited bunch of locals, several of whom I've met at other pubs in Halifax and can only say positive things about, it's obvious that with an owner who regularly abuses staff (from blaming them from being hurt or tired to attacking them for supplies running out) that Shears Inn is hopefully the last of it's kind, I write this as part of my review of West Yorkshire pubs. Funnily enough, as far as Halifax goes, every other place I've been is better, even those that only open half of the week.

I was recently in Halifax for a short break with my husband. During a visit to Halifax Minster we struck up a conversation with 2 members of the clergy who were extremely friendly and helpful. One of them recommended the Shears Inn for dinner so we decided to try it, not much else seemed to be open on a Monday night. We weren't disappointed. There's an enormous choice of food on the menu. My husband had spam fritters and chips and I had a large salad with king prawns, potatoes and eggs. It was delicious with plenty of fresh prawns. All the staff we encountered were friendly and service was good. I was very happy with the wine available and my husband thought the choice and quality of beers were good too. It's an interesting and historic location. All-in-all it was a very pleasant evening and we were grateful to the vicar from the Minster- which is also well worth a visit!

I went to the pub with my daughter. The toilets were unkept and dirty. I witnessed the waitress/ bar worker come out from the toilet cubicle (having flushed the toilet) and not wash her hands. She then brought our cutlery over. Both the waitresses and the kitchen workers were sat outside the front door in their work clothes smoking. And then return to serving food without washing hands. When I asked for a high chair they brought over a dirty one. I asked for a cloth to clean the high chair but a waitress came over to do it. Although she did make an attempt the sides were still stained with tomato sauce. I was embarrassed by this point, and didn’t want to ask again, so I finished cleaning the chair with baby wipes from my bag. I would be interested to see what star hygiene rating this pub would get if it was reviewed now.

Living close by and not big drinkers we have only ventured to this pub a couple of times when events are on with the kids. We decided to nip out for tea so phoned for a table and on arrival was met by an employee who showed us to our table which was reserved for us, the food was excellent we both went for the pubs homemade option which isn't something we normally do.. we normally get the usual pub food. The staff were friendly, food was amazing and homemade and prices were very competitive. The pub itself is in a nice corner of Halifax, with a kids play area outside and plenty of room inside, they have rooms to rent as well which I didn't know until someone booked one, some locals were in or I would assume they were locals as they all knew each other but came separately while we were seated, they all seemed friendly as well. Excellent choice anyway for us, we will be visiting again soon

This is mainly an eating pub and as a result the beer does not appear to have been given enough attention. Called this week with five friends but beer was terrible. I would not complain if one beer is off, but I have never known a pub have four beers off at once, all three guests were sour and also one of the Taylors. Felt sorry for the poor barmaid who changed our beers but the landlady was very grumpy and suggested that nobody else had complained, but refused to taste the beer herself. Such a shame as this used to be a good pub, but I will not be going back again.

If a King Size etc is essential then go elsewhere. Likewise if you want a small breakfast of lettuce leaves. If you want instead the biggest most cholestrol infused eats of your life stay here. After a very long day ending the previous night I almost ate mine, the lady managed a slice toast. It was TOO much but like the pub, down to earth and honest. I'll go back there when the ocassion arises again. Decent people and room to park. Its at bottom of a cobbled 19th century hill otherwise populated with ancient mills and like. Great place.

If this were a pub, then you could talk about the great range of real ales. If it were a restaurant then the wine list is good (and long). I think it really needs to make its mind up - you don't need wines costing £25/bottle, or champagne at £80/bottle in a pub. But you don't need so many beers & ciders and bar snacks in a restaurant.Food is good as far as pub lunches go, but not really restaurant standard.Just confusing really.

Just like going to Cornwall for a pasty, or France for snails, of kefalonia for the meat pie. So I ordered the Yorkshire pudding loaded with beef chilli. But this place couldn't make a Yorkshire pudding for toffee. It was hard and burnt and the chilli was mediocre at best. The bar staff seemed friendly, though clueless when I told them the room was already paid for and they insisted it wasn't.The hotel part was very cramped and hardly ant room to turn around and with it being the hottest day of the year I got the extra thick winter quilt and all I could hear till midnight was the loud noise from the pub. ÒMG was it a whopper, 2 burgers, cajun chicken, bacon, gammon, onion rings and salad all in a massive bun served with traditional chunky chips. The huge lamb shank came with yorkshire pudding, new and roast potatoes, cauliflower, carrots and peas and proper gravy. To say we were full is an understatement. If the rest of the menu is this good I'm definitely going to be a regular

We've lunched here a few times over the past two years. The menu is still very comprehensive, but on our recent visit we were attracted to the '2 meals for £12' offer. We really enjoyed our fish pies; the mashed potato topping was smooth and tasty and there was a decent amount of filling. It comes with salad but my husband asked for, and got, chips instead - we know from previous visits that they serve 'proper' chips! Other choices on the offer menu included fish and chips, sausage and mash, lasagne (meat or vege) and steak and potato pie.

We knew the Shears is an old building. We had been there for a drink before; however, we never stayed there. We were satisfied no more. There was a very friendly atmosphere and a willingness to help thanks to staff. The rooms were somewhat crampted and basic. We were surprised that the room was not made up after the first night and when we enquired we were casually told the person who does the rooms was off sick. Not really good enough. What food we had there was just okay. Accommodation was a reasonable price but the best thing about the place was the staff.

On arriving we were welcomed by a really friendly lady, we were seated and offered drinks, then the waitress let us know that she would take our orders at the table. When I asked about certain ingredients in 2 dishes she was very helpful and checked with the chef straight away. When she informed me both dishes were not suitable she was very apologetic and drew my attention to the specials board. The food that we ordered as a group of 4 were varied however the meals arrived not to far apart, I had sausage and mash with gravy, and an added portion of mushy peas, it was lovely, mash was creamy and very tasty, other meals ordered were steak and potato pie, roast dinner, and braised steak marinated in ale, every meal was amazing, portions were very generous indeed, the service and interaction from staff was really friendly, great atmosphere, would definitely return to try other dishes well done

We have eaten a few times at The Shears and the food has been adequate but would not go here for a special meal. Recently we popped in for the Thursday Fish Night, two of our party ordered Jumbo Fish and Chips and two had Fish Pie. To be fair the fish and chips went down well with no complaints, they were enjoyed very much. Sadly the fish pie was a total disaster! The pie was served in a dish with two roast potatoes on the side of the plate, then a dish arrived with new potatoes, cauliflower, sprouts, carrots and peas. A decent fish pie has no need of all this accompaniment, and certainly not more potatoes when the dish is already full of mash. Actually that’s all it was full of, certainly not Fish. I found 3 minuscule prawns, 2 slivers of salmon and barely any sauce. The mash was so dry it was hard to eat, I left most of it , so disappointing. There wasn’t even any cheese on it.

We had a meal here prior to watching Halifax Town v. Maidstone...the meal was definitely better than the match!! Loved the pub...typical Yorkshire food and good beer. What more could you want? There is a large car park, but you can walk from The Shay. Wish this was our local! Well worth a visit.

Tienes que saber este sitio es que no te topas con él (a menos que estés perdido! ). Yo lo clasificaría este lugar como un adecuado boozer, encargado de camisa blanca y corbata, cervezas de barril, mesas con taburetes. Almorcé aquí y no me puedo quejar.

We were pleasantly surprised by this little hotel. We stayed 2 nights and Chloe the manager was delightful. She couldn't do enough for us. We only had our breakfast here but the food was freshly cooked. I had the scrambled eggs and tomatoes and it was a big serve and delicious.Chloe even gave me 2 bottles of water to take with me on departure. My only query was the dark spots in the bathroom sink area and also the corner of the bedroom. We were in Room 1. I hope it wasn't mould.

Just spent this evening at the Paris gates. Eaten here many times before but am sorry to say I won't be eating here again. The service was OK apart from the rude landlady. The food was poor. Chips were burnt and the lasagne was all pasta. My husband had roast dinner and it looked burnt and there is no way that it should of been served. We spoke to people who complained about there food tonight and it fell on deaf ears. Sorry but will not return. The landlady has a lot to learn.

The Shears Inn is possibly Halifax's oldest pub. It's away from the town centre, down in a valley bottom, hidden among the mills. It takes some effort to find it. And sadly that effort is not worthwhile. The atmosphere is strange, the welcome lukewarm, the beer OK and food, grim. The meat was dry, the vegetables were weird and the broccoli the worst I've had anywhere. A sauce of any kind was absent. That someone thought this fit to send from a kitchen is hard to fathom. Even with nobody else queuing it could take up to five minutes to be served at the bar. The pints were topped up without asking, a plus mark, but it wasn't necessarily from the same pump. I had high hopes when I arrived and I wanted to like the Shears Inn, but I was disappointed and won't be going back.

Put simply - It was possibly the worst meal we have had!The veg was cooked with in an inch of its life, this was possibly due to the fact they clearly didn't use a knife to chop it so they over cooked it to make sure was done.Gravy was clearly granules, and was so think and salty made it practicality inedible.

We have visited the Shears Inn on numerous occasions but never before had meals served as bad as todays. We ordered garlic mushroom starters, the garlic sauce was salty and burnt. We then ordered our mains, 2 roast beef, 1 braised steak & 1 Liver and mashed potatoes. All the gravy was so thick it would not move on the plates, the mashed potatoes were heavily mixed with black pepper, the vegetables, broccoli & cauliflower were served with the entire stems attached, carrots & red cabbage were over cooked, the only well served item were the garden peas (after all what could you do wrong with heating up frozen garden peas?).The entire occasion was a disaster, we will not be back. (We recommended the Shears Inn and took 2 friends with us, what a disappointment)

Called in after a walk for Sunday dinner. Beer was great. Ordered Steak and Kidney pie with chips and mushy peas. The pie was not great, lathered in thick gravy, mainly kidney which was not tender and no crusty pastry due to the gravy. The peas and the chips were homemade and nice. We also had a kids portion of sausage and mash which was one sausage and mash with loads of gravy and some steak!! I'd go back for a drink as the beer is lovely and the bar man is very particular about serving a good pint but I'd make do with a packet of crisps.

This pub describes itself as 'Halifax's best kept secret'. It is signposted from the road at the top of the street where it is situated but I was glad my husband knew where he was going, even if it was his first visit in 40 years! We were made very welcome and found the menu extensive. I settled on liver, bacon and onions with mash and assorted fresh veg and lovely tasty gravy. My husband chose sausages and mash with gravy in a giant Yorkshire pudding and said they were some of the best sausages he'd ever eaten. Neither of us could eat everything on our plate and we sadly had to say no to dessert.

Booked in for Sunday lunch and we wasn't disappointed. On arrival we was greeted by the very friendly manager who advise our table wasn't quiet ready. He apologised and we were led to a table by the bar for pre meal drinks. We wasn't waiting long and he showed us to our table again apologising for our delay. Our whole meal was delicious the beef was served to perfection I had mine pink my partner well done. The staff were all friendly and welcoming which made our visit a very pleasant one. 10/10 too all the staff! We will be back.
