Disappointing front of house, both men working that evening came across more hostile rather than hospitable! Made to feel like we were an inconvenience and that there was some kind of rush! There were plenty of free tables! Food, however, was great so well done chef and try harder front of house!

We have stayed at the Punchbowl several times and always enjoyed it. Lovely rooms and great location. However this time the food was very poor. Soggy batter on the fish and chips, overcooked sea bass., stale goats cheese, burnt toast. We may not return.

We have eaten at the punch bowl a few times before and really enjoyed it (always on an evening) but we thought we would try it for lunch as we were passing. The menu choice was limited and not very inspiring. I had the bacon joint, my partner the fish and chips. If im honest ive had better in wetherspoons. My partners fish was frozen as were the chips. They had not let the oli get hot enough so the inside of batter was oily. I dont think it was fresh oil either. The peas were cold. My bacon joint was fatty and full of gristle. The fries also cheap frozen variety you might get from iceland. My salad was ok. But for two meals and two drinks north of £40. Not good enough.

My apologies for the three-week delay in sitting down to write this review, but that is not a reflection of the wonderful Sunday lunch we enjoyed at the Punch Bowl whilst holidaying in the area. With such an old inn, the downside was initially finding a parking space; but once that was achieved, we had a great experience. There was a large room with super views out where we could eat with our puppy. Both my nut roast and my husband's roast beef were absolutely delicious, and the selection of vegetables noteworthy. The staff were very friendly and attentive. Thank you to all concerned, and we look forward to returning.

A group of 10 of us last weekend. Fantastic dog friendly gastritis. As a big group we chose before arrival to help the kitchen. Service and the food wonderful , the best we have had for some time, the Chicken supreme with a butternut squash risotto, with a squid starter was fabulous. Our EBTX puppy was happy at the end of the table and the landlady gave her two dog treats and a big fuss. Can’t recommend highly enough, we will certainly be back when next in the area.

Not the best we’ve had from the Punch Bowl on this occasion, having made many visits over the years. My wife’s salmon was somewhat overcooked as was my burger. And the chap sitting next to us sent his steak back because there was so much gristle in it. Service was very good however, attentive and friendly. We have had the pleasure of eating dinner here twice now - once in September and again this week. Both occasions we have had excellent meals together wth a warm welcome. Food is excellent indeed - high-quality gastropub fare, beautifully presented. Covid precautions were good and very much in evidence as we saw tables and chairs being disinfected after use and plenty of reminders and provision forehand washing and antibacterial hand wash. We felt very safe and comfortable.Overall we thought the quality of the food and drink and welcome of the staff were excellent and we will return.

Very welcoming. Staff were extremely friendly. Food was nice. I had braised beef casserole. My daughter had roast chicken and my husband had the duck. Just a slight mark down because my husband's duck was slightly undercooked, as were his vegetables. He could have complained, but he was hungry and not good at sending things back. All in all though a nice meal and we would definitely return. X

We were looking for a basic lunch while touring the area. Parking difficult in most places. Stopped here because we spotted a parking space! There was no requirement to book.Covid - plenty of sanitiser, well spaced tables, table service saved moving around, single use paper menusFood: good selection. We had the haddock and chips with mushy peas and home-made tartare sauce which was one of the best tartare sauces I have tasted. The batter on the fish was light and crispy. A real plus was that the food was piping hot and stayed hot. Don’t know how they managed that. Staff: welcoming and helpful on our arrival and during the meal. Table service was prompt and our satisfaction was checked during our meal. Shame we don’t live here or it would become our “regular."

We ate here as a group of friends visiting the area. The welcome varied really, the dark haired guy with beard was less than friendly but the young guy made up for this and couldn’t do enough. We all really enjoyed our food and would eat here again. My main disappointment was the atmosphere and general decor and arrangement of the pub. It’s neither traditional or modern, just nondescript. There wasn’t really anywhere for people to sit and have a drink, the tables were set up like a canteen. The restaurant was too bright and echoey. The whole place needs an interior designer to come in and make it into a traditional country pub/restaurant and then it’ll be fine stars.

We had a three night stay at The Punch Bowl, carefully timed to coincide with some lovely sunny weather, when Swaledale was looking exceptionally pretty, the trees just coming into leaf and lots of newly-born lambs in their springy whiteness. Our room was spacious and very comfortable with a view down the valley, and quiet too, being on the second floor. The tea and coffee-making facilities were good - the little bottles of fresh milk in a shared fridge in the guest lounge down the hall being a nice touch (and enabled us to make up a flask for the day's hiking). We ate in on two of the three nights and were very happy with all our choices from a menu that clearly is a cut above much routine pub fare. Some have commented that the bar is a bit plain and overlit - I think that the Punch Bowl succeeds well in that difficult middle ground by being able to cater for pub quiz locals and gastro-pub guests at the same time. Reliably good all round. By the way, I noted from the guest book that a certain D Trump had recently visited - fake news probably!

We visited twice, had good food, and friendly service and would recommend it. On our second visit one waitress was lovely - friendly, helpful and efficient. However a second lady member of staff was far from welcoming: we had two (well-behaved) dogs with us, which were booked in ahead. As the first of our party arrived they were informed that there was a large walking party in at the same time as us, and "your dogs had better keep quiet". When I arrived, she gave me no greeting at all, just turned her back and went behind the bar. Shame. In most restaurants if you are a small party they will apologise for the noise of the large one. And, because there were a dozen people, of course they were a bit noisy, but our dogs were quiet and well-behaved.

We booked a table here as it looked like a nicer pub to have a meal than other more traditional 'boozers' the decor was nice and the staff friendly with the exception of the manager, who I think wasnt English but hospitality was totally lost on him, he focused most of his energy on a grouse shooting party for most of the evening at great expense to anyone else, others that came in that hadn't booked were abruptly told where to go, that aside we had a table for 8pm and had arrived early for drinks, we ordered another round and asked for a bowl of water for our dog (which we notified them of on booking hence a bar table instead of in the restaurant) he abruptly told us 'the dog should drink outside as if he spilt water in the bar he could get fined £50,000' it was the most bizarre comment I've ever heard and a couple next to us smiled in disbelief, anyhow we brushed it aside to a possible odd sense of humour but the final straw came on our next round when he served pints to three parties of walk ins before he even noticed we were stood at the bar waiting, he was then rather rude after we agreed to pass on our table. I have better service for breakfast through my local McDonald's drive-thru. Pub seemed nice but Basil Fawlty is in the wrong job, hats off to the younger lad at the bar for having to put up with it.

Went for dinner on a Sunday, and really enjoyed the experience. The menu is a little more upmarket than you'd find in most of the villages in the area. A lamb rump dish good, and my partner really liked her pasta with artichokes. A summer pudding desert was excellent.

We eat here every night of our weeks holiday in Swaledale. The food was great and adapted the dish to be gluten free. We phoned them a few weeks before we went to ask if they had gluten free beer they didn't but they got some in for us. All the staff are friendly and helpful. Will definitely go back.

Huge thank you to the bar lady that looked after me so well after i stumbled in, hungry and dehydrated during my coast to coast walk (note it was a somewhat unexpected 28 degrees!). And let me use the phone! Next time I'll stay the night......Thank you!

Called in on speck to have a drink after spending time in Hawes and having a steady ride home. Sat outside in the sunshine overlooking the dales with a drink in hand. Fabulous!! Looked nice inside with really friendly staff. Fairly decent menu and the food we saw being brought out looked good. They have 11 rooms and there were no vacancies, so that's always a pretty good sign. Would like to call back again to try the food or maybe even stay over.

We visited the Punchbowl on a couple of occasions, staying in Low Row for a week, the first time we had dinner which was excellent, no complaints and clean plates all round. The beer was well kept and the staff were excellent and friendly We went back a few more times for drinks and a helping of chunky chips which were fabulous. My only comment would be that apart from a few leather chairs around the fire, (for about 6 people), if you visit for a drink, there didn't seem anywhere else to sit, as all the tables seemed to be laid up for diners, so we stood around the bar area, there were a couple of stools if I recall, but we felt it could be a little more accommodating for casual drinkers to make it perfect!

Visited early evening and did not book. They accommodated us and staff were friendly and helpful. The menu is on a mirror and boards in the bar which I did not like...people standing around trying to decide. Not very relaxing. I am vegetarian and the choice is limited as normal! Lots of other choices for those seating next and fish. But the meal was good and served promptly.

We telephoned ahead to ensure that Gluten-Free food was on the menu. When we arrived, there was no one about so we sat at our table and waited, and waited! Finally a waitress appeared, who didn't seem to have a clue about gluten-free items on the menu. She went to ask the chef, and he recommended the casserole cooked in beer!!! When my husband pointed out that the beer has barley in it, and is therefore not suitable for coeliacs, she seemed surprised! It's bad enough when a waiter/waitress doesn't know about which foods are GF, but a chef!!!! The waitress suggested that my husband have a burger, and assured him it was GF - guess what? It came in a bun, which was not GF!! She offered to remove the bun, but my husband pointed out that the bun had touched the meat, and was therefore contaminated! I and a friend started eating our meals before they went cold, and we had almost finished by the time my husband's next burger arrived - he waited half an hour! There were few other diners, and I've never known a burger take 30 minutes to cook! He noticed that his plate contained no pickles - apparently, the chef thought there was flour in the pickles! What a waste of two hours! Since our friend was very kindly paying for the meal, we told her not to leave a tip. We feel very embarrassed that we even suggested going to this pub! It used to be a favourite of our, but not any longer.Coeliacs beware!

This place is so not like Tan Hill Inn. Both very different. But very good also, it welcomed walkers, even in nubby boots, the decor is fresh and country bistro / country lodge style. Lunch was excellent, marginally expensive but wouldn't complain at all, as it looks like it would be by the looks of it as you walk in. Staff very polite, and informative about what's to do in the area. Yes we will be back.

Looking forward to our special night out during a regular visit to Swaledale we were anticipating an excellent meal given its recent trip advisor reviews although we should have recalled past experiences when things were far from ideal. Three out of four of uswent for the 5 fishcake meal. I'm not sure as to what the 5 fish referred to. We were presented with a a large fish cake which seemed to consist of potato with a few fish flakes. The accompanying chips/ wedges were huge so essentially our meal was potato/potato with a few fish flakes. Very disappointing for somewhere with a reputation for good food.

The location is simply fabulous. At the top of Swaledale with views all around. Set up for walkers - so friendly, helpful and knowledgeable about the area. Mixing with fellow walkers meant a very sociable stay. Room was good size and comfortable. Restaurant bar and lounge were of high quality and brought a high enjoyable stay. Matt and Dave are great hosts. Thoroughly recommended.

No beer on draught, no food available. The only drink on tap was from yorkshire water. Don't know how the landlord makes a living, rumour is he has funds hidden in a barrel of Wensleydale Gold.

We visited 20th October 2024 for a meal for our sons birthday. We always go for special occassions however the meals were not as good as normal . Myself and daughter In law chose the bottomless Chinese my Husband and son chose trio parmos and my other son chose the Barney rubble mixed grill . Our table was booked for 6.30 we sat for 20 minutes and I had to ask Bar staff if we were to place our order at the bar to which she said I will come to your table . Long story short we waited and waited when the food finally arrived the trio parmos were extreamly dry and very hard unedible really . Very dissapointing experence .
