A quintessential Yorkshire pub. Excellent beer (5 cask offerings at the time of our visit). Good quality, reasonably priced home made food with a wide selection of choice; the pies are to die for. Very friendly management, staff and locals and a very pleasant atmosphere throughout. Dog friendly as opposed to dog tolerant. What more could you ask for? We shall definitely return.

Very good Sunday toast, we had the plater for two which included three different meats, beef, pork and ham plus all the trimmings including Yorkshire puddings. Plus the dessert was delicious, sticky toffee pudding, The service was great from Joe who was attentive and nothing was too much trouble including holding the door open for me as I struggle with my mobility. Would recommend a visit and we will be going back again.

Great Sunday lunch - first time I’ve come across the ‘shared platter’ idea but it worked well and was very enjoyable. Great service and a car park - essential for West Witton - coming from Leyburn - turn left up the side of the pub. Would recommend !👍🏻😀

Lovely, friendly feel to the place. Mostly regulars in there but not clique at all, so welcoming. I went for food with friends and family and it was beautiful. I had the Katsu Chicken Burger, it comes with fries and salad. Couldn't fault it at all! The salad was fresh and tasty, think some of it was pickled or something but it was the nicest ever. Fries were so nice that I didn't have to use salt and pepper and the burger was simply delightful and moreish. It was the perfect portion size and nicely priced. I'm just gutted that I live close to 2 hours away from here so it'll be a while before I've tried everything on the menu.

Sunday lunch call in when we spotted it driving past. Old historic pub circa 1700. Friendly greeting from staff on arrival, nice clean traditional pub. WiFi password clearly on display, good selection of beers & spirits (only 1 non alcohol option - Guinness). They have a sharing platter option for Sunday lunch as well as sarnies etc. the platter can be for 2 or 4 people & consists of Yorkshires, local meats, roast & mash spuds, selection of veg & gravy. Absolute bargain price & delicious, Yorkies were a bit cold but to be fair we arrived 10 mins after dinner service finished & they kindly agreed to serve us. Recommended & wish this pub was on our doorstep. My wife even said shall we drive the 98 miles there for Sunday dinner every week.

The last time we visited was around 9 months ago, where a newish landlord and lady were in and putting a lot of work in to both the pub, restaurant and outside area so we were both looking forward to seeing how things had moved on… Surprisingly it need not seem quite as clean, looked like works had stopped and the price of drinks had gone up quite a bit. After talking to a few of the locals we were told the pub had been taken over, which is a real shame as you can see the difference. There was nothing wrong with our drinks, we could not complain just did not have much of the old friendly feeling. Just feels like an average pub…

What a lovely pub! Very warm and welcoming feeling when you go in there. We had a Sunday roast and the sharing platter is such a great idea, everything was really tasty, the only minor grumble would be the portions the meat was quite thinly sliced and wasn't a huge amount of it but still very good. Thank you.

Nice old pub, recently under new management, with friendly staff. One of our party is vegan and unfortunately there was no vegan options available that evening on the menu, but the Landlady was very pro-active in liaising with the kitchen to try and find something suitable, and an alternative was found. Not once were we made to feel awkward or that we were being a pain. Good home-cooked food, including pizzas - I can personally recommend the pork belly. Thank you.

We called in after reading good reviews. Sadly the staff seemed to be uninterested in our business. But maybe the elderly gentleman who walked to the bar after me was a local? Anyway their food had been delivered and eaten before ours eventually arrived. Our food was excellent (hence 2*) I'd recommend you not eat here if you are hungry. Portion sizes are meagre. Neither when our plates were collected or when I returned to the bar to pay, did either staff member ask if everything was okay. The Forresters nearby and Black Swan in Leyburn, recently visited, are far better places to spend money

Wow. £17 for main course. So thought well it’s got to be something special for that price. Paid upfront otherwise wouldn’t have given them that amount of money. How wrong were we all. Extortionate and certainly was not worth that amount to shell out. Portions were not huge. One Yorkshire pudding. Veg were undercooked and watery gravy. Small mash annd only one roasted potatoe Everyone on of us (12) were totally underwhelmed. Certainly giving this a wide berth again better to ride to Leyburn or return to Hawes for a lunch!!

Called at Fox on the way home from a drive out. Recall having a good pint a few years back, and there was an advert for Weds pie n a pint for 15 quid. Walked into a room full of friendly locals and bar staff. Got a cracking pint of blonde, and my wife had a pint of 45 lager. We ordered steak pie chips n mushy peas. The wife had chicken leek chips n mushy peas. Can't fault what we had. The steak was so tender, and the chips were good too, but gutted I didn't get the chicken leek as it was so tasty, and it came with a pot of cream sauce. 30 notes for a main and a pint is excellent value!

Warm pub with an even warmer welcome. This traditional village pub is clean, warm and welcoming and is grounded in what it wants to be: a traditional pub serving good beer, great food and a offering a friendly welcoming atmosphere. You get the sense is it part of the village community. It makes such a difference when the landlady or mother of the landlord are so obviously enjoying their work. This enthusiasm comes across and makes the whole experience that much better. And it sets up a positive atmosphere right from entering the pub. There was a warming open fire when we arrived and even though we were in walking clothes with muddy-ish boots we were made welcome and could have sat anywhere in the pub, though we chose to sit at a bar table near the fire with a hard floor. My beer was very good it was just a pity there was not a dry cider option, either on draught or in a bottle, for my partner. But the drive to sweeter cider appears to be universal. The food was well presented and tasty with a good but appropriate portion size and substituting garden peas for mushy peas did not cause a hearth attack, which was an experience we have had in another local pub. We rarely eat chips so it was a treat to have "real" chips that had been fried to perfection along with the scampi. The only niggle was having to open a number of tomato ketchup sachets, though they were at least Heinz. I know the argument for and against, but I would rather have had a bottle! This is personal preference. We thought the food to be good value for money. The toilets were clean and well laid out, and there is a nice outside area for when the better weather arrives. While the entrance is tight there is a good sized carpark to the rear. The first time at this pub but it is on our list to visit again. Tip, if you want a walk before and after your visit. Park at Wensley Bridge and walk along the river path up into West Witton. The walk can be extended and made partially circular with a bit of map reading.

No beer on draught, no food available. The only drink on tap was from yorkshire water. Don't know how the landlord makes a living, rumour is he has funds hidden in a barrel of Wensleydale Gold.

This is such a lovely experience for a simple cup of coffee. Beautiful setting, lovely lovely cakes and the staff make this so enjoyable with their pleasant and helpful attitude.

We visited 20th October 2024 for a meal for our sons birthday. We always go for special occassions however the meals were not as good as normal . Myself and daughter In law chose the bottomless Chinese my Husband and son chose trio parmos and my other son chose the Barney rubble mixed grill . Our table was booked for 6.30 we sat for 20 minutes and I had to ask Bar staff if we were to place our order at the bar to which she said I will come to your table . Long story short we waited and waited when the food finally arrived the trio parmos were extreamly dry and very hard unedible really . Very dissapointing experence .

The location is simply fabulous. At the top of Swaledale with views all around. Set up for walkers - so friendly, helpful and knowledgeable about the area. Mixing with fellow walkers meant a very sociable stay. Room was good size and comfortable. Restaurant bar and lounge were of high quality and brought a high enjoyable stay. Matt and Dave are great hosts. Thoroughly recommended.
