No beer on draught, no food available. The only drink on tap was from yorkshire water. Don't know how the landlord makes a living, rumour is he has funds hidden in a barrel of Wensleydale Gold.

Traditional country pub, full of character, offering a mouthwatering menu of typical pub meals, plus more. Food is ordered through table service. Menu includes gluten free options, though this is not stated on the menu. Plenty of starters, mains and typical traditional puddings. Real ales available plus wide range of spirits and wines. Pub owned by a couple who are very welcoming and ensure you enjoy your experience. Well worth a visit.

The George Inn is a little gem tucked just off the main road. However we were made very welcome by Charles, who was friendly and attentive during our stay. The rooms were clean and little extras such as grapes and chocolate were lovely. Food was of a high standard and beautifully served. I would definitely go back and stay again.

Staying at nearby aysgarth lodges we planned on visiting the pubs in the local area. We arrived here at 3pm on bank holiday Sunday for the doors to be locked. We could not find opening times on the internet but thought we were safe around that time on bank holiday Sunday. Reading previous reviews it's a shame as it's a gorgeous pub in a lovely location, so much more could be made of it by the sounds

well I may be at odds with the other reviews here, but the landlord was far from friendly, dogs not made welcome, booked a table for 6.30 got in at 6.25, had not even sat down, and was told to order, as he had another table booked for 7.00, our friends had not even arrived yet!! we were told he had another dog coming in, which was a residents dog so ours would have to leave if they did not get on? he just seemed very abrupt and not welcoming at all, we decided not to stay, and found a very cosy friendly pub in the next village, he may have had a bad day, and i never write reviews, but I have to say, stay away and try the fox & Hounds at west Burton, for a smiley face and a welcoming landlady, this guy has a serious problem.

We were staying in Aysgarth and was our third day of walking so we thought to keep the walk small .....we headed off to West Burton then onto Thoralby (the George Inn) hoping for lunch or even just a pint and a bag of crisps! We knew they stopped serving food at 2pm so did our best to get there in time, we were feeling chuffed as we got there with a few minutes to spare. Just about to walk through the door my husband said there was a sign saying please remove muddy boots and at the same time a well dressed gentleman burst through the door saying “sorry we’re closed” and he shut and locked the door!! That’s never happened to us before so were a bit disappointed and felt he was quite rude about it. Don’t advertise on internet that you serve food till 2pm if that’s not your intention, it should state last orders at 1.45pm or similar then we wouldn’t make such an effort to come to your pub. But luckily we headed back to Aysgarth Falls Hotel and had a really yummy roast dinner and crumble!

Arrived here after a drive around with the hope of a nice pub lunch, pub inside lovely the man who I believe is the owner is just rude and so unwelcoming. We got drinks to start and set a tab up whilst we could look over the very short and expensive lunch menu, 10 minutes later he came to ask if we was go to be ordering anything and could he take the menu back...this answered the question it self...NO! He then asked us to settle the tab as would cause issues with the till??? We drank up and left and luckily came across the arysgarth falls hotel which had a great lunch menu and was better priced

Visited very recently whilst staying locally. Outwardly very nice and well presented inside , with real fire etc. Unfortunately I didn`t find the experience particularly welcoming. The food may well be very good ( I didn`t try it so can not comment ) but the ambience of the place I felt was very old fashioned and a tad depressing. I do of course recognise that maybe it was just an off night but I have to say I found the other pubs in the area rather more to my taste. Perhaps I will go back again and it will be different. It is only my opinion at the end of the day.

Parking is on the front forecourt, with benches which overlook beautiful scenery. The two guest rooms are ground floor with external doors and are well heated with comfortable and elegant furnishings and a power shower, very welcome after a cool morning or evening walk. The 4 star Inn does provide a high standard of accommodation and is in a delightful peaceful village setting in the Dales. The pub is quiet and has a coal effect gas fire at either end and food is served in the pub. Dietary needs are given some consideration in the main meals menu where ingredients are clearly stated and there are some vegan, nut free and gluten free options. We visited on a half term Saturday lunchtime. The pub was deserted. The owner was friendly enough, a little eccentric perhaps. The pub is traditional with lots of plates and pictures on the walls. It has a cosy feel and was warm on a cold day. The food was very good. Both the steak pie and the Salmon Mornay were freshly cooked and delicious. We tried to return the following Wednesday evening at 6.30pm but the pub was closed. We called and were told it did not open until 7pm even though it said 6.30 on the website. We had a really big hike to find something to eat. We were cold, tired and wet and just wanted something to eat. When we got to the George we were told by the landlord he could not take our order as he had to deal with a table of four people with their order and meal before he could take our order meaning we would have to wait half an hour before he could take our order. In the end we walked a ten minute walk to the George and dragon to where were given a lovely warm welcome, a fantastic meal and drink. We returned a further three times during the week. I will keep this brief. We were short of choices visiting in mid January Monday and Tuesday but chose this place as first two choices were closed. Could have walked out after the indifferent welcome we received but stuck at it as we did not want to travel far that night. The food was excellent cannot deny that and credit to the cook. For me choice of cask ale was limited to one. The negatives, we were not made to feel welcome, even though we were the only customers besides a lone elderly drinker who left soon after we arrived. We were attempted to be ushered to a table in the cold side of the bar where there was no fire. When asked about the other side where a log burner was, we were told it was being set up for dominos. That was true on three of the four tables but the fourth was free. So anyway we choose ourselves to sat there, the log burner was not that effective anyway. Q by the time we had eaten and left the dominos had not started and no one else had arrived. What was that all about?

We tried to get in a hostelry in Aysgarth for Sunday lunch, but there were no spaces in the car park so we decided to try elsewhere. We saw a sign to The George and as it was only a mile and a half away, we decided to drive down to Thoralby. Here, it was entirely the opposite to the other place, because apart from two locals having a drink there were no other diners in there, so our suspicions should have been raised. They definitely should have been raised when the lady said that she was on her own and had a table of five coming in later and wasn't sure if she could handle it! (The man did apologise for this aspect, later in our visit, as his wife thought she may have sounded rude).Saying that, we decided to stay as the place was warm, spotless and cosy with the real fire burning. The food and ale was decent enough, with no complaints whatsoever. The smartly dressed man who served us seems to specialise in having a set look of disapproval when you ask him anything whatsoever that doesn't fit with his stereotype of what a customer should be and what customers should do (presumably he would prefer some gentleman farmer and his wife dressed in tweed drinking G&Ts and talking about the weather and the state of the economy). We took a photo of the fire - disapproving look. We had the nerve to ask what the varieties of fruit juices they served - and he trotted them out quickly after saying " are you ready for this?"! Disapproving look. (PS Heres a tip - please put them on a laminated card to take back to the tables to show the kids - we are out for Sunday lunch not taking part in a feat of memory). He was even more miffed when we'd asked for the third time.We asked if we could order one pud separately as my daughter is a fussy eater and she wanted to try some of the others first and at £5.10 each (where did that come from - £4.95 sounds much more appealing). Disapproving look and a refusal - even though the other party of five (but no other parties) had arrived to dine and they weren't yet at the pudding ordering stage. In our local they would be happy to serve every dish separately if we wanted - they believe that the customer is always right. But the absolute classic look of disapproval came when we had the nerve to ask what the total bill of over £140 consisted of! (see the review below from Heather M who had a similar experience). The till doesn't do that he said !!!!!!!!!!!!! Uh? He then thrust three hand written slips at me. It was my turn for a disapproving look this time. "I can write it out if you like" - accompanied by the disapproving look. One of the kids had asked for cream and ice cream. It was shown on one of the blue slips at £6.10 but nothing was said at the time of ordering about the extra cost. Ah, I didn't charge that as one person had a plain pudding. Mmmmmm - well why write it on there then?By this point I'd had enough of this guy and The George. So if you stumble across this pub and there are no cars in the car park when the place up the road is packed to the rafters - now you possibly know why.I am giving it a review of three. It is somewhere between a five for the food, drink and cleanliness and one for all the other obscure aspects of the visit.Whilst the food and drink and the pub itself were fine, we would never go back in there - it just wasn't a comfortable experience. With a change of attitude, it really could have been a great afternoon.(PS Having read some of the responses from the owner shown below - as any user of this site knows, the date of review isn't necessarily the date of the visit.)

From the outside and admittedly inside , this is a very welcoming pub. Landlord was approachable and cannot fault the service.Disappointment was the food, I had a special, Spanish pork stew which looked appealing on menu but unfortunately the actual dish was a big letdown. Looked very unappetising and had far too much salt in whilst being accompanied by burnt garlic bread. My wifes salmon mornay was nice apparently. I don't like leaving bad reviews but the place is great to look at in a great setting, however food(incidentally not cheaply priced) let it down completely on our visit.

This pub is exactly what you expect of a village pub in the Dales - beautifully done out and welcoming with real fires. Unfortunately that is where the positives end. We were not made welcome when we first arrived despite the fact that there were only 4 other people in the pub. The menu is extremely basic and I struggled to find something nice to order. I settled for the "minty lamb" from the specials selection which was good but not special - I go out for food which is special. My friend had the vegetarian mushroom tartlet for her main course and if it had been me being served it I would have complained. She didn't want to cause fuss though and didn't say anything. It was the same size and the cheese and onion tartlet that I had for a starter - two mouthfuls and gone. There were 4 of us and the food was mediocre to average but the real shocker was when I asked for the bill. The guy behind the bar said "that will be £102.75 please - no bill just his word. I asked for a bill and was presented with a bit of paper which simply detailed the cost of food and the cost of drink - not itemised as I would expect it to be. We paid and left and wont be back. Real shame because the look of the place is exactly right but let down by lack of choice, presentation of food, actual taste of food, quatity (as in the case of the main course vegetarian option, and cool if not unwelcoming demeanour of the person behind the bar. The lack of a proper bill was disgraceful.

Other users of the holiday flat in which we stayed recommended this restaurant. We enjoyed excellent cuisine from varied menu at a reasonable price. It was all cooked from scratch with local ingredients. It is a delightful pub setting. The host was very friendly. Unfortunately the starter and main course were so filling that I couldn't manage a dessert!! My husband enjoyed the local ales.

Our party of 5 varying in age from 64 down to 14 ate here on Sunday night having discovered the George the previous day. Excellent selection of food for us all (our party included 2 vegetarians) together with friendly and efficient service and all at a reasonable price. Nice to have a steak cooked exactly as requested!Good selection of well kept beers available. A highlight of our first visit to the Dales.

The George offers a good selection of pub food using mainly locally sourced produce. The specials are not to be missed, all at reasonable prices. The Sunday lunches are delightful - the local roast beef being particularly delicious. Excellent real ales and fine wines are available for your enjoyment.

We ate here one saturday night. Had booked ahead (essential) and arrived after a long walk. I ordered a double gin and tonic- and it cost £7.90 including the smallest bottle of tonic I have ever seen, but at £1.45 a bottle I wasn't going to get another. My food from the chalk board option was good but my partners fish and chips was mediocre. Lovely old world pub with landlord garbed in bright silk waistcoat- different every night- lending a slightly eccentric air to the place. The village is in lovely Bishopdale with great scenic walks from there.

We visited 20th October 2024 for a meal for our sons birthday. We always go for special occassions however the meals were not as good as normal . Myself and daughter In law chose the bottomless Chinese my Husband and son chose trio parmos and my other son chose the Barney rubble mixed grill . Our table was booked for 6.30 we sat for 20 minutes and I had to ask Bar staff if we were to place our order at the bar to which she said I will come to your table . Long story short we waited and waited when the food finally arrived the trio parmos were extreamly dry and very hard unedible really . Very dissapointing experence .

The location is simply fabulous. At the top of Swaledale with views all around. Set up for walkers - so friendly, helpful and knowledgeable about the area. Mixing with fellow walkers meant a very sociable stay. Room was good size and comfortable. Restaurant bar and lounge were of high quality and brought a high enjoyable stay. Matt and Dave are great hosts. Thoroughly recommended.

I love my fish and chips and this place just went to number one in my hit list - taking me right back to my fave chippy in Thirsk. A quick pop in for lunch, but I'll be back for the full monty again. Unfortunately for my husband (who is veggie), they're a traditional chippy cooking in dripping, so no veggie options.
