There are three pubs/restaurants/hotels (?) in Askrigg. We have been coming here for over 30 years and seen so many changes in all three we feel really qualified to comment on the latest change. The latest change is The Kings Arms is now the best place to have an amazing Sunday Lunch with such a fantastic atmosphere. We sat in the bar area which has the most relaxing atmosphere made all the better for not having a television spoiling everyone’s delightful experience. With friendly dogs very welcome and space to relax and enjoy a local pint of Askrigg Ale ( brewed just down the road) this is truly the place to be. Where locals rub shoulders with us out of towners and all get on so well who can’t help but just relax and enjoy yourself. Our lunch was a delight and so filling it was amazing. Arriving hot and prompt I cannot recommend the food more. You do not have to travel any further for the best of times and I can only add, book in advance to avoid disappointment. Lastly I did ask for a doggie bag at the end and came away with more than I expected, see my photo - This was a joke by the way, simply added for cuteness!!

Our second visit to The Kings Arms in a month, however, this time with 6 other friends as part of our weekend away group. We all ordered in advance and arrived on time and we ALL agreed we could not fault any part of the evening. The food was excellent, first class service and the ambiance in the Kinds Arms was a pleasure to be part of. Thank you to ALL the staff, especially the chef because the food was excellent.

Another fabulous evening here. 4 of us dined on a Saturday evening, having garlic mushrooms to start and the feathered beef for main and it was delicious. The other party members were equally impressed. Service friendly and welcoming, reasonably priced food, beer and wine spot on. Love it here, never disappointed.

Friendly staff, great setting, prompt service. On the whole food was lovely. I had steak pie, it was a slice of a larger pie, I could see how dry it was as it was served, so dry I struggled to cut through the pastry and the meat on the edges was not edible.

So disappointed. We have been coming here for the last ten years whenever we are up in the Dales (on average twice a year) and we would eat every night or lunchtime in there. We looked forward to our meal last night but I have to say since this changed hands standards have fallen. The family who ran it before were warm and friendly and service was excellent. Now it feels like a Pizza Express.

Had a Sunday lunch with three meats option. The vegetables was all very nice, however everyone in our group noted the meat`s were all processed as we could not really tell the difference in the meats as they were very bland. Great shame they did this, as it is a great place and the rest of the meal was really nice.

Things will go wrong with restaurant bookings and just about everything that could go wrong with this booking did. The measure of an establishment is how they deal with the problems as they arise. In this regard the staff at the Kings Arms were exemplary. We received a complimentary bottle of wine and there was no charge for a meal that had initially been overlooked. The staff were apologetic without being obsequious and maintained a cheerful demeanour throughout. What really saved the day however was the quality of the cooking which was outstanding. All six of us thoroughly enjoyed our meals and my wife and myself returned the next evening and the food was just as good. Well done.

I am still in a bit of a haze from my experience of spending my 55th birthday in Askrigg, all this due to the love of the BEST BBC show ever created, All Creatures Great and Small, in 1978. We arrived in Askrigg Friday night quite late. The pub was open, but the restaurant was closed. I asked them if they could feed three poor souls, and they said the restaurant was closed so we sat down for a few drinks, and before we knew it, they brought out two big bowls of french fries, some dip, and a basket of fresh bread and local butter. They said that's all they could do, but I was touched by their kindness. What great people! Sunday, I made reservations for lunch. We had the roast beef with all the trimmings (Yorkshire puddings, mashed potatoes, etc). Again, the staff could not be nicer. The sticky toffee pudding was out of this world. I just want to say thank you for your hospitality on my 55th birthday and for being part of a dream long in the making- visiting the Yorkshire Dales! So, if you are looking for good beer, good food, and good people, you found your pub! Another nice detail is that it is right across the Skeldale House, one of the main reasons why I was in Askrigg!

Stayed in a high quality Holiday Bond room, at this traditional pub in the lovely village of Askrigg. Nice traditional bar and good sized restaurant area. Good choice of real ales - I had a pint of draft Old Peculiar. Very good food, with excellent pies. Service a bit mixed as we waited around 40 mins for our meal and staff needed to be chased.

Mam and Dad brought me here while we were on holiday in Askrigg. I have to say, the staff were exceptional! I was given loads of treats. Dad booked a table for the following night as it was his Birthday. He had steak which he said was wonderful. I got a few morsels and I have to agree. I would have loved a whole portion to myself! Mam had the pasta which she said was heavenly. Then Dad was given a dessert with a candle in and we all sang Happy Birthday. Mam said the speciality gin was great and really helped her sleep. Hope they are going to bring me back again cos this really is a special place with special food and special staff (especially one lady who seemed to really like me). We love coming to the Yorkshire Dales. We’ve been to the King’s Arms a few times. You are always guaranteed a friendly welcome and very tasty food. Today was no exception. Didn’t think I would manage the plateful but I had to, it was too tasty to leave. Highly recommend a visit if passing this way.

Been going to Askrigg for nearly 30 years and unfortunately the decline in the Kings arms is very noticeable. Can't comment on the food because although it was only 1.30 on Sunday lunchtime and service was not meant to stop until 3pm we were not able to order food. Tables available but a rude person walking into the kitchen said no more food. Nice start to our holiday!!! Whenever we have holidayed in the village that has never been a problem. HPB wrong attitude. Previous family that run the establishment were fantastic and so friendly. We have a lot of holiday history here. Often visiting area up to 3 times a year but this has made us have a rethink..luckily I had some provisions back at accommodation so could feed ourselves. Atmosphere gone completely. Middle house and The Crown further up village much better options. That's my advice .

After a hike in the Yorkshire Dales my partner and I were starving and stumbled upon this quaint little pub in Askrigg. Safe to say we were in for the best surprise as neither of us expected much, typical pub food nothing special but I can truly say it was the best meal I’ve had at a pub in ages! I had the steak & ale pie and my partner had the sausages & mash and I could not fault it! Everything came out hot, portions were generous & most importantly it tasted amazing. The pastry on my pie was a quality only my Nana has achieved for me! In short, can’t fault the place! Would love to go again & would highly recommend to anyone visiting Askrigg or Leyburn!

We had the ‘Drovers Pie’… we went there specifically for the Drovers Pie! BEST MEAT PIE ANYWHERE round these parts! Don’t do many reviews but this was absolutely stunning! Delicious; HUGE amount of meat, proper pie with a shortcrust pastry top and bottom, (not a covered dish), with chips, new potatoes or mash, veg and gravy… proper!! Gutted I didn’t take a photo but when it got put down in front of us, thoughts of taking photos were far from my mind! And talk about ‘value for money’! We had a ‘special’ Gin which was £10, and a couple of other drinks but the bill including these and food for the two of us was only £53!!! Can’t recommend this place highly enough!

Stopped off here for some food on a Sunday. We had not pre booked but got a table in the bar straight away. I Had a mixed meat roast and my wife had a roast without meat . The women serving were all very friendly and welcoming and even charged a little less for my wife's roast as she didn't want meat. When the roast came out it was a lot of food and the Yorkshire puddings were the biggest I've ever seen. I love a good roast dinner and this one did not disappoint! Best I have had in a long time ! I managed to finish my plate as it was so good but paid for it afterwards . Eyes bigger than my belly . My wife managed around half of hers . It was a bit pricey but we were on holiday so didn't matter that much . Highly recommend this place

I’m not one to write a negative review, especially about an a pub business having experienced first hand how hard it to run a pub but I wanted to be honest and give this feedback. We’d driven from Leeds and stopped off for some lunch on a Sunday afternoon. I asked the lady at the bar if they were still serving food and she said they were so we were seated in the restaurant section where there was a few other couples eating. My partner was admiring the big Yorkshire puddings on the other diners tables so we both ordered the beef Sunday roast. When it arrived we were a bit disappointed to see that there wasn’t any yorkshires on ours. The young lad who served us seems disinterested so when the lady who’d greeted us asked if all was ok, I politely asked if they had any yorkshires and she informed me that they were reserved for bookings (the remaining ones) and they had a film crew in filming Yorkshire Vet. I said I understood because I didn’t want to cause a fuss but afterwards I watched as other customers received their full dinners I thought it was pretty poor. It’s understandable to run out of things but you should let people know at the outset so they have the option to change their mind or apologise before they have to ask and maybe over more of something else or a reduction of price. But to say it’s because we didn’t book and that a film crew was there implied that we weren’t as important as other customers, or an inconvenience, which isn’t right. I know it sounds petty (and it’s only Yorkshire puddings!) but it just tainted the experience and we didn’t stay after that. The food we had was lovely and so was the pub but I think you need to make all your customers feel valued regardless if they’ve booked or are locals/film crew because we are still spending our hard earned money.

My mother is a big “all creatures great and small” fan so we come here every year- however this year we got our food served and drunks no problem-walking out a dog barked at my dog and a local at the bar stared shouting and swearing how he was a local and that the dog should be trained. Even though it wasn’t my dark barking my husband said it’s a dog friendly pub and dogs do bark- he told my husband to fu*k of. Don’t worry - my hubby did reply! The past 2 years it has gone down hill- my mother was sick the same evening but we can’t say if it was the lunch she ate here or not.

Pleasant enough pub, the only reason it hasn’t got 5 stars is because one staff member we encountered just seemed to be a little disinterested in customers. This should not reflect on the place however as it is a generally nice pub to visit and the food we ate was delicious and came out fairly quickly. A lot of the staff are quite young but for me that’s not an issue as we’ve all got to start somewhere so it’s nice to see the younger generation being employed. The lady with the short blonde hair however was absolutely lovely and we had a nice chat, she was very welcoming. If it wasn’t for her I would have had to have given the place a lower rating. All in all though it’s a nice place and locals seem very friendly. Unfortunately though there was a bit of a smell from the toilets in the back room each time we visited so this may need addressing in the future.

Complained, the pie was taken away with NO comment and returned 5 minutes later trying to tell me that “this is how it’s supposed to be” I’ve had enough pies in my time to know what a pie should be like. A great pub with a good selection of beers. The luxury fish pie is great and the Drovers Ale Pie is packed with beef !

WOW! Whilst having a weekend break in the area, came across this gem of a pub with a lunch time menu/restaurant. We popped in for a late afternoon drink and had a look at the menu. They were able to fit us in for food, yay! Starters I had Wensleydale mushrooms, husband had the mackerel, both dishes were very tasty. For mains we had the Drovers pie and belly pork, both dishes were excellent, top quality food, would definitely recommend, especially the pie, scrumptious succulent pieces of steak in a rich ale sauce encased in a shortcrust pastry that melted in your mouth. Staff courteous and attentive, pub seems lovely and clean, would definitely revisit when in the area.

Booked for Sunday lunch but only one option which was a 'sharing platter' of meat, vegetables with yorkshire pudding. It was served on one plate piled high - overwhelming!! and not in a good way. Meat overcooked and food generally very disappointing. Apparently the usual chef was not available due to an injury. We had eaten at the Kings Arms last year and the standard has since deteriorated. We shall not be returning.

Poor to average pub food at prices that are too high for the quality of what you get. Also tried two of the real ales, neither of which was anything special. Nice ambience and staff friendly but wouldn't go back

FAB EVENING AND FOOD The staff at yorebridge hotel recommended the place for a few drinks in a local friendly pub, they dropped us off and picked us up. Landlady was so friendly and welcoming! We had dinner - Beef ale pie which was superb, I don’t even usually eat beef but I’d seen good reviews about it and wanted to try it! Played darts and really enjoyed our evening. You can take dogs in the bar area only and eat. We didn’t have ours with us but wished we did as there was enough floor space for the two of them.

Beer excellent. (Askrigg Ale) The bar is really homely. A three beer option available. Food looked good, but we did not indulge. A good stop for walkers and cyclists.

Absolutely fantastic dinner. My wife, I and two daughters ate here tonight and our experience was excellent. A very polite warm welcome when we entered. The Bolton arms is a striking building and the decor inside is superb. The food was amazing! All four dishes were excellent and enjoyed by all. Service was great and when extra gravy was asked for this was no trouble. Portion size was very generous and prices great. If you want brilliant food at very good prices with great customer service please pay the Bolton arms a visit. Thank you, see you again soon.

I love my fish and chips and this place just went to number one in my hit list - taking me right back to my fave chippy in Thirsk. A quick pop in for lunch, but I'll be back for the full monty again. Unfortunately for my husband (who is veggie), they're a traditional chippy cooking in dripping, so no veggie options.

No beer on draught, no food available. The only drink on tap was from yorkshire water. Don't know how the landlord makes a living, rumour is he has funds hidden in a barrel of Wensleydale Gold.

Had the best Sunday lunch, two courses. The food was exceptional with service to match. We were well looked after even though the place was busy. Pity we live too far away, I'll be there every Sunday
