Went here for the first time with family and I was NOT disappointed! The food was lovely and the staff are so friendly and helpful! The cake selection here is amazing and they taste as good as they look! I ended up buying 3 cakes and desserts because I couldn’t choose just one! Would 100% recommend coming here for food, tea and cake! I will be returning :)

You had better be hungry! Our hefty portions of delicious forest fruits cheesecakes had to come home in a box; We were so stuffed after a first class beef and onion pie. The food all looks amazing and our choices were scrumptious. We are late to the party as this is a busy thriving restaurant and rightly so.

I visit pennells quite regularly with friends so I decided to take my husband for a treat. We had a coffee and a tea, two tea cakes and a slice of lemon meringue. All was well until my husband tried his cake which was awful, it cost £5.50 so we spoke to a staff member who dealt with the situation very efficiently and swapped it for a slice of egg custard and reimbursed the money difference. The egg custard was also awful, thick pastry and an odd textured custard topping. I do think if you’re charging £5+ for cake it should be of a reasonable standard. The staff in the restaurant are brilliant and nothing is too much trouble, the meals are amazing but please don’t spoil the experience with sub standard cakes / desserts

Been having meals here for a few years as they were good and reasonable price. I used to enjoy a vegan lasagne but when I had one last time it was only warm and texture was horrible. Husband had fish and chips and chips were cold. Went again in case it was a one off but it obviously wasn't ! My husband went for pie and veg and they served him it without mash, they thought he said he didn't want and apart from that the bread was dry on my sandwich. Maybe iff they hadn't. been chatting between themselves they would have got the order right. They could also put large knives in one cutlery tray and the small blunt ones in another. It is handy for us to go here but will only have tea and coffee now.

This is a good garden centre, also a place for finding gifts, cards etc. Friendly staff. What lets them down is the coffee in the restaurant. We have been several times and are always disappointed by the coffee, eg if you order a cappuccino what you get is just a milky coffee. This is not the fault of the staff but rather the management, who obviously have invested in a proper barista machine but failed to offer their staff any proper training in how to use it!!

We went in for coffee and cake .. two lattes, one slice of banoffee pie and one slice of lemon meringue for the heart attack inducing sum of almost £17 , and all served up in the most charmless way possible. The banoffee was mostly whipped cream and biscuit base with one or two slices of 'ban' and a microscopic sliver of 'offee'. The lemon meringue was soggy and the lattes were warm and milky but sadly lacking in much coffee. Fairly woeful really ...

Visited today for a lunch, took a while to get served which was a little disappointing considering the amount of staff about and lack of customers. There was clearly someone there that staff knew as they just all seemed to stand chatting, not much work being done. When we finally ordered there seemed to be an issue at the till, I stood waiting to pay and by the time I’d paid my food had already arrived. Food was good can’t complain about that, just be aware you need to have plenty of time when you visit, took almost 25 mins to be served and pay dread to think how long it would take on a busy day.

They usually have 3 or 4 main dishes on (changes every day, but there's nearly always at least one excellent meat pie on!) as well as jacket potatoes, paninis, sandwiches, etc, and amazing looking cakes (but the main courses are big, so I never have room to try the cakes). The staff are lovely, and very keen to help with older / less able customers, e.g carrying your tray across to a table for you. The main dishes are served at the time, the others (such as paninis, jacket potatoes) are brought out to your table usually quite quickly. If your group are having some of each, they will bring all out together. Good value, approx £8 for large plateful of pie, potatoes, veg. Have always come away full, even after the "lighter" options such as panini. If you are coming regularly, ask for a loyalty card for the hot drinks, after so many stamps, you get a free hot drink.

I finally got to the end of the queue and was told yes help yourself at the machine ...it really didn't look like a self service restaurant and the price of the coffee didn't reflect that either . The cafe does attract quite a few mature people, including my 92 year old Mum who likes to go out for lunch but eats enough to feed a fly! Visited recently for lunch. I ordered steak pie, which was nice, but the potatoes on offer were either new potatoes with skins on or mashed potatoes in breadcrumbs (something which a child would eat). Therefore I just had veg with my pie, as both potato choices did not look appetising. Quite expensive at £7.95 for pie and veg! My mum ordered soup and roll at £4.95, which she said was nice, I actually wished I had ordered soup instead... The choices were not as good as the last time we visited. There were salads on offer which you helped yourself to your choices, which concerned me as they were not covered up! (Ham, cheese, etc....). We visit Pennells quite often for a stroll outide and a coffee. But today they have lost custom, from a few of us. Like most shops they have christmas decorations on show as if santa is coming tomorrow. So I am not making comment about that part of it. However, when you go in you cannot avoid the massive pretend horror film penguins The most frightening christmas display ! As soon as we saw them we agreed they are horrible and will put the fear of christmas into toddlers. Guess what ? On our way out we saw a little boy aged around 3 or 4 years old crying and doing his best to run away. He was shaking and kept shouting " don't like penguins" The family ( or friends ) he was with agreed with him. That poor lad could have nightmares now and will not want to look at a pengun anymore. Might sound like a joke, wish it was. People of all ages were not amused. Never seen anything so sad. That poor child was not the only upset one. I advise Pennells to remove it straight away. For goodness sake put something funny and happy in it's place. On behalf of those children and parents I say thanks to Pennells for making christmas something to look forward to.!! I hope everyone takes the time to complain if they are upset.

My Son and I popped into this lovely restaurant for a bite to eat and relax. We decided on a barbecue chicken panini which we informed would be a few minutes. This was fine as we were in no rush. A few minutes passed and a very nice young gentleman came across to opologise profusely as my panini had been over done. These things happen so I had no problem with a little longer wait. I was, therefore, very surprised when he said that a new panini was being prepared and that he'd also bring me a full refund! I said that it was fine as I didn't mind at all but the money was refunded. The manageress (I assume) also came across to humbly apologise. Thus type of customer service is lost nowadays and I felt that a reward on trip advisor was the least I can do! The panini was shared by my Son and I and was delicious as was my coffee! A 100% thumbs up to all the staff I encountered here.

Nipped here twice in two days. First day I went with my wife and little boy for lunch. I had a jacket spud with tuna. The amount of food I had on my plate was excellent and to much. The food was really nice. The service was great as well with no issues. We both had a good meal. The cost was slightly higher than expected but I wasn't over fussed as the food was nice. The second day was a different story. I went with the wife, little boy and took the mother in law again as I last minute requirement to eat out and have a coffee. This time I had a steak and kidney pie , chips, veg and gravey. Again none of us could complain about the food as it was excellent but the service was poor. Firstly the mother in law had ordered Brie and cranberry sandwich. It came out as a panini. When I questioned this with the waiter who brought this over , he said they don't do it in a sandwich. It was the same guy firstly who took the order and never said anything to us. Secondly the mother in law has been many times and has the same thing so she knows they do them. Secondly my gravy never came out. I had to wait around 5 minutes after asking for it and my food slowly going colder while I waited. I will be honest the waiter didn't seem to care and just wanted to get the food dropped off on the table and move on. Couldn't wait to fob us off I felt. This sort of ruined the second visit , hence why I have down scored it to a 3. So I had to different end of the scales experiences here over the space of 2 days.

Me and my son called in today for lunch, we decided to go for the roast pork dinner, big mistake.Pork was like leather, potatoes were full of deep fryer taste (suggest you clean the oil) the veg was there standard carrot cubed swede and cabbage, All looked and tasted very bland.Service was OK by a young man whom was friendly.Overall it was a very poor lunch and we will not waste £7.95 each again.

Stopped off for a quick lunch and was pleasantly surprised at how good it was. There were no burgers that day so we opted for the scampi, it was top notch and the portions generous. It was busy but the tables were cleared and cleaned quickly by the very pleasant waiters and waitresses. It is a self service restaurant for some dishes and table service for others. Highly recommended.

Thought we'd give this restaurant another chance and thought the service might be better on a Monday as it was a Friday last time... but even though it wasn't really busy the service was abysmal. After being handed our hot meals we had to wait for the till as there was no-one manning it and there were three people in front. They eventually got served and we had to wait for a space to move our trays to across the gap. Staff twice put someone in front of us who were only purchasing drinks or cold food. I eventually complained that out food would be cold before we reached a table. To give the lady her dues she then removed our plates and put them to keep warm and then took them into the back to re-heat them and then brought them to our table. She did apologise and explained what we already knew - their service and till area is too small, they need two tills - one for hot food and one for just drinks and cold food to keep the queues flowing. They have known about this problem for ages so why not do something about it? To cap it all the meal we had was not the best, pie was nice but the potatoes were a grey/brown colour inside and tasted like they had been cooked a week ago. That's out lot, may risk a coffee or sandwich in future but that is definitely all.

Called in today and was surprised how busy it was on a monday lunchtime. Service was very efficient and friendly. we had cheese and ham panini which was brought to table when ready- we were surprised they were ready so quickly given how busy they were. Paninis were delicious and presented well on plate with a lovely salad garnish and a small plant pot full of fries. Quality ingredients- ham was particularly good. However this is a cafe in a garden centre and price considered to be rather full at £5.95.

Good food, hot and cold server, lovely cakes and nice coffee. The only thing I did not like was that the self service salad bar was uncovered and I get put off by people coughing all over it. I think it should be served from behind the counter.

We just popped in for a few bits and ended up having lunch in the restaurant. The restaurant is spacious, immaculate with polite and helpful staff. The food was lovely and very well cooked and wax much better quality and value than most pub meals in the area. Will definitely be going back ❤

My wife and I went for breakfast this morning. What a lash up. Yes the restaurant was busy and I had to wait some 15 mins or more to order our breakfasts. It then took another 40 mins before our breakfast was served (minus the toast) when I brought this missing toast to the servers attention he apologised and off he went to get it. When our toast arrived 3 slices were only just browned and the other slice was nothing more than warm bread. I did not say anything as we could have waited another 40 mins. On the plus side I must say the food was of the usual high standard, although the plate did seem a little lacking in beans and mushrooms. It appears that the restaurant management want to be getting a grip when they are busy so people can expect to have their food served to them in reasonable time.

On a previous visit we were served by someone called Kathy who was extremely helpful and pleasant which made for a lovely visit. The last time we visitited the queue in the restaurant was long with people waiting for food, we only wanted drinks so assumed whilst they were waiting for food we could bypass them and ask at the till where no people were waiting if we could order drinks. We were most rudely told that we could not and now should have to the back of the queue. The person was called Louise. We walked out and will never go back to the restaurant part of Pennels.

came here today 29th March 1pm the cake selection looked good but wasnt labels to say what they where. then i got to tje counter and ordered my drinks then i decided to choose a chocolate muffin from the side of the till to which then janice huffed and puffed because i was getting a muffin then she stormed off saying i wasnt ready to order and pay to which i clearly was other wise i wouldn't have gone to the till. so maybe someone needs to explain to JANICE that these cakes are there for people to get when at the till and she needs to learn some customer service skills. just plain rude!!

Call here for a,Tea or Coffee quite regular and it's always good quality however they could try to have a better design in those just wanting liquids and those who are waiting for Food Items the Que is sometimes not worth the wait if your trying to get some shopping in to. Having said this the drinks are of good quality and prices are about what you'd expect from a good quality garden centre. Can't really comment on food again as I haven't eaten here since my last review but on seeing what was being served it certainly looked good and worth a visit.

Came here with a friend who I had not seen for years for a catch with our lunch. I ordered a toastie and my friend ordered a sandwich. Both arrived fairly promptly after the ordering. I was pleasantly surprised when the toastie arrived with the chips in a mini plant pot! Such a lovely touch. The salad it was served with was good too. Not just a half tomato, piece of cucumber and lettuce here! The sandwich came with crisps and salad too. The bread was fresh and full of grated cheese. So no complaints about our lunch or the place and would return.

Lovely garden centre. Cafe is lovely and clean and tidy. Staff are always helpful. Cakes and mains are great value. Cakes are big enough to share. Snacks are expensive for this area £3.99 for a bacon bun. Good options for gluten free.

To have a sloppy breakfast first thing in the morning when you want to feed your soul was quite heartbreaking. A good flow of clientele but watching over their shoulders the food wasn't very inviting.Garden centres are place for plants and flowers not for food and music. Earning money is one thing but a good set of admiring clientale is a privilege. As the Dragons would say I'm out.

Very surprised at the poor review as I found this place very pleasant. Very helpful and friendly staff. Tea and cake were very good. (I like my tea very weak with no milk, staff listened and provided me with tea just how I like it.)

Seeing a couple of bad reports I felt I needed to rate pennells myself. We've been on 4 occasions most recently this week and it's always been a pleasure. Staff have been great, service cannot be faulted and the food spot on.

Popped in with the grandson and his Mum. Due to dietary limitations and time of day (ca 15.00), one of us was going to settle for simply a few chips, so with this in mind my wife and daughter went off to order, while I entertained the youngster. When they returned they said the toasted sandwiches were no longer served with chips but with crisps, despite the menu clearly stating chips. This meant the little fellow was going to have to settle for a tuna sandwich. They refused to cook a portion of chips, despite the menu saying they cooked until some while longer than the time at which the food was ordered. Because of an intolerance, my daughter asked for there to be no butter or other dairy spread used on the sandwich and when the not very helpful or interested guy who took the order was explaining this to the kitchen staff, the woman involved was clearly seen pulling faces as if this was one of the more unpleasant or ridiculous requests she'd ever had.The mediocre quality toasties arrived with the tuna sandwich for the boy and we shared the view we'd had much better in many other places and the minute portion of limp crisps was absolutely no substitute. On top of all this, the bill was about two to three times the value of the food served - we could have spent the same and got a decent meal for the four of us elsewhere with better staff. To be frank, it would be hard to find less pleasant staff, even in a fast-food outlet. We will not be returning.

i visit pennells restaurant once or twice a month, for lunch and coffee. its a pleasant environment with and nice ambience. food is always nice and most of the staff are friendly and efficient. I say most of the time. i have noticed that at certain times the staff are struggling to cope and the wait time is longer than others. I have visited a few times in December due to xmas visits and it appears that when certain staff are on there are plenty of efficient personnel around. Yet at other times the staff appear to be lacking in ability and numbers. im not sure how the staffing works but it seems there are two sets of staff. i have also noticed that there are one or two of the ladies (management?) that talk down to other members of staff. This, sadly takes away from what is usually a pleasant experience. From what i can see as an outsider the management need to look at training the staff properly and put themselves on shifts with weaker members of the team so they can monitor their performances and nurture where appropriate. Dont let these issues spoil what is other wise a great restaurant

This place has changed over the years, after last year (2023) I wasn't sure if I wanted to come back, but I'm glad it did. Myself and mostly Gluten Free family had lovely carvery. - Good Cleanliness - Decent Atmosphere - Nice Setup - Meat was cooked to perfection. 🤌🏻 There's were however a things that wasn't particularly great... - I was the only person in the line for a carvery and I watched 12 minutes go by. - The roast potatos were VERY crispy. - No more refillable drinks! I got very annoyed standing there, I have a blue badge due to my disability and my lordosis wasn't doing great but I managed. I know people that wouldn't be able to manage that kind of wait which could take away their independence. Admittedly I only had one roast potato, I like to think I pick the ones that look the best and look fluffy. But the texture and taste wasn't great. Could have been a bad pick, bad batch or just a bad day. I have really enjoyed them in the past. For a refillable drink it only cost 15p more than a regular pint of pop. 😬 So I was shocked to find that there is no more refillable.

Chicken and pepperoni pizza was a generous size and had plenty of chips too. Staff friendly, don't remember asked if our meals were OK though. Good overall though.

Sourdough with starter was like a rock, tried to cut, all over the table. Main course fish was average. Main course was lukewarm, cous cous was cold and clumpy, flat bread was like cardboard, salad was fine! Expensive, didn’t complain but would never return or recommend
