Lovely accomodation and great food and beers. We ate both evenings in the restaurant and had great breakfasts. Really friendly welcome, although the landlord pre-occupied with his son's wedding. The room was very clean, excellent and comfy bed with decent shower. Great value, Traditional sprung bed

We have just stayed here for 2 nights with a buy a gift voucher. We were extremely pleased with the accommodation and service. I was a little put off with the negative reviews but, found no evidence of this during our stay. The host Scott was polite and efficient throughout. The room was a superior and was really large with 2 armchairs to relax in. The food portions were excellent and the food lovely and hot. Honestly couldn't find a fault with our stay and would recommend to anyone for a peaceful and enjoyable stay.

This is by far the best place we have stayed for a while. Food is amazing and equally are the staff who did everything to make sure our stay was comfortable. The outside areas are immaculately kept and at times all you can hear is the wind in the trees. Will definitely be back!!

stayed for 2 nights bought by a gift voucher and the meals represented this. Small portions and no steaks available (even at extra cost) watched my starter and my partners main being so so much smaller than guests that paid on the night! expensive tasteless draught drinks. Very basic breakfast that didnt provide all that was on the menu. The staff seemed quite inexperienced. The setting was lovely but nothing else around. Have to give credit to the clean and large room (a superior) , warm and homely log fire

Stayed for the weekend and had requested a room with walk in shower due to mobility issues, this was provided with no problem. However, it was very small and not what we would expect for £120 per night. There was nowhere to sit apart from the bed and there was just room to walk around the bed, it would have been more suited as a single. On the plus side the room was very clean and tea, coffee, biscuits bottled water provided and refreshed daily. There was a good choice at breakfast and it was served and cooked fresh to order. We ate in the dining room one day (would have been two but no chef on Friday) the food was excellent and well priced.. If it hadn't have been for the room I would have given it 4 stars.

Just back from a two night stay at the Black Swan. We were given room 9 which is at first floor level to the rear of the main bar and restaurant building. The room was clean, a good size and had everything we needed. Tea/Coffee was replenished daily, as were the lovely biscuits. Bottled water was also provided. Bed and pillows were comfortable. Perhaps a little quirky and something not everyone will find to their liking is the absence of a bathroom/toilet door, and enclosing walls not going all the way up to ceiling height which may present some privacy issues. To the side and rear of the pub are two beer gardens/patios, both of which provide stunning views over the beautiful countryside. We are fortunate to live in a fairly rural location, however, this place is on a different level and both the tranquillity and silence were wonderful. Fearby, which is where the Black Swan is located is a lovely picturesque village. We ate in the Restaurant on both evenings and had two enjoyable meals. There was a slight issue on the second evening, but this was resolved quickly and without any dramas by Scott. Breakfast was also good with a simple continental selection and then a choice of cooked options including a full Yorkshire, Smoked Haddock, Smoked Salmon, Scrambled, Poached, etc. All the staff work incredibly hard, particularly Bailey, who was helpful and charming throughout our stay. If you are looking for somewhere very quiet and relaxing, this is the ideal location. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and look forward to a return visit.

We stayed here overnight to break our journey for an attraction we were visiting nearby. On driving into the village of Masham, we were awe-struck by its natural beauty. We stayed in a lovely, clean, spacious and well-equipped room with the only downside being that we weren’t staying longer! The food was absolutely delicious! We booked in for an evening meal. We had a chicken liver pâté and garlic mushrooms for starters. For mains we had gammon and a roast lamb dinner. The portions were very generous, not minute like you get in some restaurants. We did order a side of onion rings so had no room to enjoy, what I’n confident would be, a gorgeous dessert. The cooked breakfasts were equally good. The staff are friendly, efficient and helpful. We’d definitely stay again and recommend this place strongly to others. Thank you to everyone at The Black Swan. Keep doing what you’re doing, you’ve got it spot on!

If you’re staying in Fearby or Healey, you’ll be hard-pressed to do better for a pint and a meal than the Black Swan. We were staying at a cottage in Healey and stopped in for an evening meal - the lamb special, plus puddings - and were so impressed that we immediately rebooked for lunch the next day. We had steak burgers all round. The main bar area where we had both meals was warm and cosy. Had we not had the dog with us (who was made very welcome in the bar), we may have ventured through to the restaurant area which seemed to have large windows taking in the spectacular views of the Nidderdale Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Excellent bang-for-your-buck from the well-thought-through menu; we’d definitely recommend the Black Swan at Fearby and it’s “Yorkshire portions” to anyone passing through!

Just had probably the worst meal I have had in 50 years . The food matched the place - rough. The caravan park at the back says it all - but isn’t mentioned at all on the pub website. Run down , bad food ( …no awful !! ), noisy , grubby and dour. Couldn’t wait to leave . Table service very hit and miss . The fact I left most of my food wasn’t questioned when taken from the table ,, it was obvious I didn’t like it - didn’t bat an eyelid . The menu photos on the website are clearly from a good food magazine because that isn’t served here ,, id rather eat the paper menu than the food . Truly awful experience. Canteen food at proper restaurant prices .

I admit that had I researched this better we never would have stayed here. Listings and the pubs own website fail to mention there is a large a large caravan site at the back. So instead of the modest country pub we expected it was a scrum of caravans with a bar and canteen in support. Its also very scruffy and poorly maintained - dirty windows obscure the view, cigarette buts at the front door etc etc. I would have just put this down to experience but for the fact that we paid over £100 a night for a room. So do your homework before you book in here.

We were seated off the main bar, it was busy with other diners. The menu options weren't very inspiring, burger, fish n chips, gammon etc. It was only as we left the pub that I noticed a specials board. It all tasted OK, nothing special but the portion size was decent. Service was very, very slow. Probably won't rush back as there are far better places in Masham itself.

Dined here as we were staying in a cottage in the village, they served a couple of my husbands favourite beers from Masham which was an added bonus, while I during the week worked my way through the different flavours of the local Masham gin! I chose Whitebait starter and Lamb, potatoes and veg. for main, husband had Chicken Pate starter and Sea Trout, mussels, cockles, potatoes, veg for main, couldn't fault anything, delicious, all washed down with a lovely bottle of wine.Enjoyed it so much decided to return again on our last night, and we both had the Sea Trout, prompt friendly service, would definately return if in the area in the future.

We live locally, and had rung to check on the covid measures in place before we booked, and felt reassured by what we were told. However the first thing we saw when ordering our drinks at the bar, was that the large mirror behind the bar was absolutely filthy. Our wine glasses at the table were covered in finger marks and had to be replaced. The glass light shades in the restaurant were also very smeary. The staff were not wearing either masks/visors, or gloves. However, our food was well cooked, on hot plates, and delicious. So, we would heartily recommend the food, but not the basic cleanliness.Hopefully the Manager will address the cleanliness issues asap, as we and our friends would like to return.

My wife and I booked a table for an evening meal while staying at a local B&B, and were looking forward to a special evening together. We were surprised by the (lack of) welcome: we were kept waiting by the bar for several minutes before the 2 gentlemen behind the bar even acknowledged our presence. And the bar area was not crowded ( one other person was there). We received our drinks quickly, but it took over an hour from ordering our main meal to receiving it. My wife's cod was delicious, but my red snapper was tough, rubbery and I was unable to eat half of it. We were looking forward to a dessert, but having watched people on a nearby table waiting over half an hour to have their dessert order taken, and knowing the long wait for service, we decided to leave without trying a dessert. The waiter ( or was he the owner?) seemed surprised, and apologised for my chewy fish, but no discount was offered. We certainly would not eat here again, but from looking at the other reviews I think we got away lightly: certainly none of the staff were aggressive, angry or rude to us.Also, we did not feel that the table next to us allowed us and the people sitting at the table to be 2 metres apart, but we didn't have a tape measure with us to confirm or refute this. Another reason why we left before ordering a dessert.

Stayed here for 2 nights, a gift for Christmas off our family.Very rude host, before we arrived I pre booked a table on line, on arrival I checked he had got my booking because I hadn't received a confirmation email. I get over 200 emails a day he snarled you aren't booked in but we'll fit you in. That's basically how our stay started and every time we came into contact with the man there was a similar attitude. We even witnessed him being nasty to other guests and could not omprehend his attitude. The man is in the wrong line of work and has no social skills what so ever. The rooms were nothing special and the food ok.

We originally wrote this review a few days ago, however it mysteriously got deleted. Not to worry as I have ample time to rewrite it, and feel it’s very important people are aware of the type of treatment they can expect at this small village pub.Myself and a small group of friends were staying at a beautiful holiday home just round the corner from Fearby and were told this pub was nice. We are from two households (uni houses) and had created a bubble together. Before we could sit down, a man marched over and started shouting at us. Insisting that “he may not look like it, but he runs this place”. Impressive as that was, he continued to be incredibly rude and aggressive towards myself and my friends. We saw that he himself was drinking (in a group of friends) also in the beer garden. He refused to give us a moment to explain our situation and instead threw us out and swore as he walked off. Bearing in mind we booked in advance and were told our attendance was completely fine, you can believe how shocked we were when scrappy came over insulting us and shouting at us. I have never experienced such unprovoked anger and aggression in a hospitality setting. Quite glad we were asked to leave before ordering food as the menu was completely overpriced and didn’t look very nice. So disappointed with this place, as it has the potential to be a welcoming and homely environment. Shame but we’ll be sticking to Masham from now on.

Slightly disappointing stay when considering the price for 2 nights stay. Room was ok, large in size with plenty of space but bed was pretty poor, being two singles fastened together & minimal furnishings in the room. Had one meal in pub which was decent but again slightly overpriced for what it is.Overall felt slightly overpriced & the hospitality wasn’t perhaps as warm & friendly as you might expect although the current COVId challenges must make things harder for the owner & tbf they had made all reasonable steps to support social distancing & added hygiene Lovely setting with Masham only 2 miles awayI may be being slightly unfair but expected slightly more considering the cost per night

feel compelled to write this based on my total shock horror that I have just experienced in this pub. A pub with high reviews and one we hadn’t visited before. We had booked a table as part of the government scheme for food. We arrived to be told we had to sit on seperate tables due to COVID as we were from different households. ( although in a social bubble). For the reference... 4 adults and 2 children. His words were ‘ are you from a different household, don’t lie to me, because if you lie to me I’ll find you out, and I’ve kicked people out of here for lying to me. Don’t you even think about lying to me. I won’t lose my licence for people like you’We stated we were the same family from a seperate house, but joined in a social bubble. However, we understood and seperate tables weren’t an issue. However we were then met with aggression from the landlord who advised we were uneducated on the legislation around eating out, and how dare we not know the rules before attending. Please let me reiterate, we never stated seperate tables were an issue... The landlord was extremely aggressive and shouting at our family, stating we should leave if we don’t like it. I have NEVER EVER experienced this with a small business owner, especially in an environment where we were spending money. In a time where business has been so slow, we would have expected the total opposite! We advised we were going to leave and he proceeded to shout at us as we left the pub. This story does not do justice to the real scenario, and the level of anger within this man was overwhelming. A pub we had never experience before, but really looking forward to.... we’re all in total shock by the treatment and experience we have just endured. Upon further research it’s seems we’ve not been the only ones subject to this profanity. BEWARE!

Only stayed for one night as a treat. Was well worth it. Room was very spacious with large TV ,tea and coffee making facilities and hairdryer. Super king-size bed which was comfortable. Bathroom was clean but could do with updating. That's my only negative comment, however it wouldn't stop me staying again. Evening meal was included in our stay which we could choose a starter and a main from the menu I had Cod Cheek Goujons which were lovely followed by the Steak Pie which was excellent. The gravy was to die for. I can't comment on breakfast as I have not had it yet but I'm sure it will be nice. Good choice of lagers and beers in the cosy bar which has a log burner which was nice as we visited in February. We drank Morretti lager which was 5 pound a pint which isn't too bad I suppose these days. The staff were friendly and the manager was helpful. We went here for dinner the other night, as our normal favourite for a local meal has had a change of chef and sadly no longer worth going to. How pleased we were! The meal we had was, without a doubt, up there with the best pub meals we have ever had.Now the basic menu is largely what you would expect, BUT with a few inventive dishes added, and these were supplemented with some excellent 'specials' so we felt spoilt for choice. We had 3 main courses - duck, grouse and steak - and I won't try to describe them as they were far from simple but each was in its way superb. A great deal of thought, and skill, had gone into each, and everything on the plate was blended to add to the dish. The quality of everything - sauces, veg, meat, was of the highest order. Deserts were equally impressive - not a huge choice, but we didn't really care as it was all, again, imaginative and excellent. Service was efficient and very friendly, and the restaurant itself provided a nice ambiance. Wine choice was plentiful, and very fairly priced. Now one word of caution. If you want just a basic meal, then it's possibly on the expensive side. But if you go for one of the more imaginative options, then while not cheap - quality seldom is. Our meals, 3 courses each and a bottle of wine, came out at about £40 a head, and we thought worth every penny. This is a place to go for a special meal or just a 'why-not' treat. It's not a 'gastro pub', nothing pretentious at all, but a nice, friendly Yorkshire pub/restaurant, serving food at the very top of what you would expect, produced by a chef who clearly puts a great deal of thought, effort and pride in what they cook. Thank you, we will be back soon.

We stayed for three nights in a double room which was very clean and well equipped. We used the restaurant twice and ate at a pub in the village for the other day. The food at the Black Swan was excellent, with a good choice and well presented. It was a step above pub grub which is why we returned for the second evening.

Stayed for one night, checked in & shown to our room by a very pleasant young man, room was outside the pub in a cottage style building with lovely views over the countryside. Room, no 7, was large, roomy & cosy with a small but adequate bathroom with bath, toiletries and beverages, large comfy bed & plenty of cupboard space. Went into the pub, lovely & traditional, nicely decorated for Christmas, had a drink & could have sat there all afternoon it was so cosy & atmospheric! Ate in the resteraunt later, food was lovely, couldn't fault it & breakfast was lovely with the added bonus of vegetarian sausages, my husband had full English & said it was all good quality produce, overall this is a lovely place, we couldn't fault it & would highly recommend, we will defiantly visit again.

We have been treated by our son to a two night stay here with a groupon voucher and l've just rang to book and the male who answered the phone was rude from the start, very miserable and unhelpful. I asked did they have any availability at the weeksends from now till the end of march but he said they don't have any at all which l find odd, but I could pay £30 per night to upgrade to another type of room. I feel he didn't want groupon voucher customers and if this is the case they shouldn't be on the site offering deals then. I have asked groupon for a refund as l feel if someone is rude over the phone they probably won't be any better in person and l want to enjoy my stay.

First night of our autumn break, and we strolled up to the Black Swan from our holiday accommodation, a nice change not to have to take the car! Staff were friendly and efficient, not too in your face and food very good. I would say this place is trying to be a restaurant rather that a pub foody kind of place. No bad thing, but be aware the food side seems bigger than the drinking element. All in all a pleasant experience.

My wife and I stayed at the Black Swan in Fearby for two nights in August and the food and accommodation were excellent. The location was perfect for what we wanted to do, which was visit local National Trust attractions and undertake some picturesque walks through Nidderdale. The food in the restaurant was excellent, although the service was a little slow (which we didn't mind as we were on holiday), and the ambiance of pub was great. The number of choices on the menu is small, but there is a specials board, portion sizes are generous and the quality of the food was very good. We really enjoyed our stay and would recommend the Black Swan for food and for short breaks in the Nidderdale and Ripon area.

Only had a drink here but they do serve food. It gets very busy as they have a campsite at the rear of the pub. They do accept dogs in the bar. The tables outside could do with a revamp but this is only a minor thing.

My wife and I had a lovely meal here last night. We weren't ravenously hungry, so we just had a couple of mains. We both chose the cod loin. Everything was perfect and we let the chap in charge know our feelings.

Poor quality and over priced is the best I can say - Poor quality fatty meat and kids meal was dry chicken breast - I expected better, a lot better for £14.95 each for adults meals. Drinks over priced and so is food.

Visited today for Sunday Lunch on a Groupon deal, we had never been to the pub before but were very impressed. We were greeted very warmly which sets the right note for the rest of the visit. The French Onion soup (which we paid for as it was not part of the deal) was delicious. There was a choice of chicken or beef for the main course I had chicken my husband ordered the beef and requested it well done which it was. Both meals were excellent and served piping hot.All in all a lovely place to be with excellent service and food.

This is a very pleasant campsite with good clean facilities. There is a slight slope on the site but it didn't cause us any problems. The Black Swan offer a takeaway food service which is very useful if staying on the campsite. Would recommend and hope to visit again in the near future.

We have being visiting this cafe for over 15 years and always enjoyed visisting with family. The team in the yellow uniforms were always friendly and the prices VERY resonable. We enjoyed Xmas luches here and have great memories playing crazy / mini golf. Visited today hoping to enyoy cake and a latte, but noticed new owners have taken over. Sadly not a patch on previous set up and sorry to say the wonerful home made baking was replaced with uninspiring offerings. Latte was the worsed i have had in many years, can only be described it as white coffee, the owner was unimpressed and rude with me asking for a replacement. Will not be returning.

Gluten free review for the cafe: I visited the Druid’s Temple today and went to the cafe for lunch afterwards. Gluten free cakes and sandwiches were available. I had an ultimate hot chocolate and a trout and cream cheese sandwich (GF bread), and I’m sad to say that neither were very flavourful. The hot chocolate was weak and watery, and the sandwich was very dry. It’s a shame because the setting is so beautiful! A word to cross contamination, I have reacted to the food that I had, so I suspect that the chopping board used for my sandwich may not have been cleaned down before preparing my food (or similar). There was also a gluten free chocolate brownie which was in the same cabinet next to gluten containing cakes, with tongs that customers could use to select their own cakes, but no separate gluten free pair. If anyone from the cafe happens to read this, from coeliacs and gluten free people everywhere please could you make sure that cross contamination risk is limited through simple measures such as cleaning down a surface before making gluten free food (we don’t mind waiting a bit longer for piece of mind!), and that GF cakes and sweet treats are kept separate and using separate tongs etc? When we find places that don’t gluten us we share it heavily in the community!

Stayed here on our way home to the West Country we stay almost every year. And this year was just as good as previous years. This year we stayed in house opposite the room I believe was called Braxton? It had a shower over the bath and a nice sized bathroom. The bed was huge and very comfortable, there ware extra pillows/blankets etc in a wardrobe if needed. There was kettle and cafetière with coffee bags. The breakfast the next morning was all cooked to order and great poached eggs. I would highly recommend this hotel and will be staying there again next year. :-)))))

Having visited the Tontine several times in the recent past, we looked forward to a nice Sunday lunch as a family. The visit was marred by underwhelming customer service, requests for water took several attempts before being served, the staff seemed uncommitted to delivering much of a service, and the food , frankly was at best average.I’m afraid that in view of the negative impression we had, it will be some time before we return, there are so many good local places to eat, it really is a disappointment to have to be so negative, must try harder would be my advice.
