Really good quality, food, reasonable portion size, and in the present world good value for money. To be honest, a little bit of a hidden gem, but I would change the seating. Depending on who is on service ,can be outstanding or average . I don’t know why it’s asking me to review this as a hotel because I’ve never stayed there only eaten on many occasions.

An early (4.30pm) evening meal and a menu of standard pub fare was surprisingly good. We both opted for lasagne, my wife the red pepper and spinach and me the beef, sharing the chips and garlic ciabatta. Service was friendly, efficient and attentive. There are tv's in the bar and adjoining rooms but they were not loud and there is a separate restaurant room if you wish to avoid them. We were quite happy to stay in the bar which had a nice atmosphere and a few locals. This is a traditional pub with no airs and graces, but all the better for that.

Without doubt the worse meal I have ever had while eating out. Scampi and chips. The scampi straight from a frozen packet. The peas looked and tasted like they had been re-heated at least twice, and the chips! Hand cut, apparently. My lord! Dark brown in colour, yet not crispy. Under cooked on the inside. Greasy and offensive. And almost £16 for the privilege. Hats off to whoever can produce such a disappointing meal made of such basic ingredients. Never, ever again. I would avoid it like the proverbial plague.

The Bay Horse Inn is a great place to use as a base from which to explore York and the surrounding area. It is a stone's throw from the A1(M) and a short drive from York's Poppleton Bar park and ride. I stayed with my Mum in what I think was the family room (we booked a twin but had a double and a single bed). The room was clean and well appointed with comfortable beds, a lovely clean bathroom, and tasteful decor, including very effective black-out curtains. The cooked breakfast was superb - cooked on demand, so always hot, and with just the right quantities of everything. (I saw one review which said the portions were small - I suggest the reviewer was greedy!) We had our evening meal in the pub on two out of our four evenings. Although the menu wasn't huge, (this is a small, independent, village pub so I wouldn't expect the myriad of options found in a large chain), but had ample choice, including a variety of curries which are locally famous. Our meals were lovely with the best burger my Mum could remember having and the hand cut chips were amazing! Jon, Tina, and the team were friendly and helpful. We didn't have to ask for anything more than more tea bags and milk to use in our room but I'm sure that if we had needed anything else, they would have been happy to help. A special shout out for Sheila who served our breakfast every morning with a smile and friendly conversation. I would recommend the Bay Horse Inn to anyone and wouldn't hesitate to book again next time I plan to visit the area.

We booked The Bay Horse the night before we stayed as a spontaneous family get away. On arrival we were greeted by the lovely land lady who showed us to our beautiful family room. The room was spacious, modern, clean and fresh! We had a very comfortable nights sleep. The pub meals were home cooked and absolutely delicious. Breakfast in the morning was cooked to order and too was absolutely delicious. The staff here are very helpful and very friendly! Nothing was too much trouble. They lady serving breakfast on Sunday morning even entertained our 3 year old and let him help hoover round the pub. We were absolutely delighted with our stay and will most definitely stay again. Thank you very much to you all.

My wife and I and small dog needed a place to stay the night near York. We selected the Bay Horse from a small number of places available. The bedroom is functional, good bed, tea/coffee, TV etc. They provided a doggy bed and treats. The bathroom was lovely and big with a decent shower. We ate in the pub in the evening and the food was some of the nicest pub food we have had. We both chose the chilli garlic chicken and thanks to Jon it was wonderful. The breakfast on the Sunday morning was not the biggest but did the job. All of the staff were very hospitable especially Jon & Cheryl(?) and if we are ever in that area again we will certainly look to stay there.

Splendid, dog friendly, village pub. Has large car park. Lovely, sunny, floral beer garden to the rear. Has additional sheltered, outdoor seating in a rear courtyard complete with outdoor TV. Great quirky furniture, cable drum tables, beer barrel seats with hessian sacks and some really innovative and different sprung cycle saddle seats. Great space!! And that's only outside, ha. Lots of little rooms within. Only had one handpulled cask beer on - Ruddles Best Bitter, a very good drop and well looked after. Met and served by the warmest, friendliest barmaid, Katie, who was all smiles and most welcoming. Good attributes and qualities that decent bar staff need, Katie had it in spades, what a great asset to a business with staff like this. Purposefully asked her her name, because I wanted to give her a shout out here. Katie, you were lovely and a very special and kind person. I had clocked up a good few miles as I had been out walking early, so decided to dine here. Great choice on menu: kid's meals, gluten free and vegetarian options. Extensive Indian menu. I had Roasted Pepper and Spinach Lasagne with hand cut chips. My oh my, large portion and absolutely spot on tasty. Really, really good food. A light not heavy lasagne. Perfect! Even had room for a pud, tut tut, quelle pig je suis, heh heh! Chose Pool Bridge Farm Shop Sticky Toffee Pudding with cream. It was totes delicious. One of the best. I shall definitely revisit this pub and wholeheartedly recommend it to you. Food, welcome, staff, everything is great. 10 stars 🌟

I wish I could give a zero. I ordered the beef burger without fries and it arrived in a bowl on a serviette with no dressing whatsoever. When i tried to bite into it I felt something rock hard. I attempted to cut the burger and I could not. Even bashing it with a knife was not successful! The worst excuse for a burger I've ever had the misfortune of encountering. Needless to say it was returned and not paid for.

Just left this pub 5 minutes ago, was looking forward to the steak and ale pie that we had read good reviews on. Wish we hadn’t stopped! The pie was some very dried up meat on a tuff pastry base, the peas very dry and tasteless looked like they had been microwaved, chips looked recooked and the gravy was like water! I saw they were advertising for a cook, definitely need one. Extremely overpriced. We did mention to the barmaid it wasn’t the best, who replied with would you like the deserts menu? No thanks In reply to your response, my plate was far from empty! Please check your bins

such a lovely place to have drinks. we went for the comedy night and really enjoyed it. staff are amazing and very reasonable prices. special mention to a young ginger girl who was on the bar. she made me and my friends feel so welcome and seemed to know the bar and system so well even though it was her second day. she made conversation with us like we were friends and indulged our long winded stories. she gave us amazing drink recommendations and made the experience 10 times better. unfortunately i can’t remember her name as it was unusual but she definitely deserves the credit. i would definitely come again and give her the praise in person

Gluten free review for the cafe: I visited the Druid’s Temple today and went to the cafe for lunch afterwards. Gluten free cakes and sandwiches were available. I had an ultimate hot chocolate and a trout and cream cheese sandwich (GF bread), and I’m sad to say that neither were very flavourful. The hot chocolate was weak and watery, and the sandwich was very dry. It’s a shame because the setting is so beautiful! A word to cross contamination, I have reacted to the food that I had, so I suspect that the chopping board used for my sandwich may not have been cleaned down before preparing my food (or similar). There was also a gluten free chocolate brownie which was in the same cabinet next to gluten containing cakes, with tongs that customers could use to select their own cakes, but no separate gluten free pair. If anyone from the cafe happens to read this, from coeliacs and gluten free people everywhere please could you make sure that cross contamination risk is limited through simple measures such as cleaning down a surface before making gluten free food (we don’t mind waiting a bit longer for piece of mind!), and that GF cakes and sweet treats are kept separate and using separate tongs etc? When we find places that don’t gluten us we share it heavily in the community!

Stayed here on our way home to the West Country we stay almost every year. And this year was just as good as previous years. This year we stayed in house opposite the room I believe was called Braxton? It had a shower over the bath and a nice sized bathroom. The bed was huge and very comfortable, there ware extra pillows/blankets etc in a wardrobe if needed. There was kettle and cafetière with coffee bags. The breakfast the next morning was all cooked to order and great poached eggs. I would highly recommend this hotel and will be staying there again next year. :-)))))
