The Nelson Inn in Harrogate

Really enjoyed the Nelson for lunch. Had the fish and chips and my partner had the Venison. Been going on and off for 10+years and I've seen different menus different owners maybe staff or both. In the past food would seesaw and the atmosphere could be dark and dingy. Now and the past year I've been twice and it's such a brighter welcoming place. The staff are very helpful, especially for me being gluten free. The menu is impressive /solid without being pretentious or too basic. Plenty of classics but done impressively well. Definitely will be coming back in future. P.s ( Any waiter/waitress that can give me a wine/alcohol pairing recommendation with my meal is very much appreciated so kudos to the blond lady who did as much.).

Cannot believe that having booked for a family meal over a week ago we had a call less than 2 hours before we were due to sit down to tell us they had no available table! We have been many times before but won’t be in a rush to go again as they have ruined our Christmas plans at the drop of a hat! Hang your heads in shame!

I ordered fish and chips- looked nice but was cold. Very very disappointed Otherwise all OK We are regular customers and this is the first complaint we’ve ever had

Stopped here on our way from Durham to Clitheroe. We had our dog with us and sat in the bar area. Our waitress was informed and efficient, with drinks and food served quickly. We had three courses and all the food was delicious. We will definitely stop here again.

Consistently excellent food and service at The Nelson. Never been disappointed and there’s a really good menu choice. Lovely ambience and very festive at the moment.

A warning for anyone with an allergy. Went for a lovely family meal last weekend and everything was absolutely spot on - beautiful food and great service. Until dessert time. I am Coeliac and ordered a gluten free noce of Yorkshire blue. The waitress put it in front of me, stating ‘gluten free’ - thank goodness I realised the crackers most certainly weren’t. A near miss that would have left me extremely poorly for a few days!! So do go - but if you have an allergy be very, very careful!

Had an excellent meal with my daughter. Made to feel very welcome by the staff. Food and service both excellent. Portion sizes very reasonable and much as we wanted a dessert, we couldn't fit one in as we were so full after our main courses. Love this place and make a point of visiting every time we go to Harrogate or York.

Amazing food & good service only slight negative - need more crackling

Food was good but chips were out of the freezer, we had fries and chips but the fries were a little too well cooked. Struggled to get them on a fork. It's a shame as the steak and the burger were spot on. Also the pub was really well presented and views were fantastic.

Food, Team and ambience all first rate. We were quite a large group who ordered a wide variety of food and it was all excellent. We will definitely be coming back.

Absolutely stunning pub! Fantastic food (amazing gluten free options!!!!) staff are knowledgeable and very helpful, they catered to all of my food intolerances and allergies perfectly and where happy to talk through options and modifications. Will definitely be back thanks so much!

Recently booked a table of 10 people in for food here and was really impressed at the speed of service. The staff were really friendly and welcoming, and the food was good too. Would definitely recommend!

Missed both the onions and the pancetta from the burger. Brought it out half way through after we quastioned it. Has to dismantle the burger to add the ingredients ourselves. Complained when paying but manager showed no interest and said we made a mistake. Very poor.

Super food, great service, good selection of ale. Very good with asking about any allergies when taking the orders.

Always used to stop her on the way to York for lunch as it was cosy and good food. It then changed hands and was awful, so I stopped going. It now seems to have new owners and is back to is best one of the best steak sandwiches I've had. The staff are lovely and friendly and it's got is cosy atmosphere back. Now stop here again every time.

good food and service, took a while but to be expected when being cooked fresh. only thing that could have been better was the steak knife . . . . i have sharper butter knives at home😆, I ended up using the standard knife it was much better.

We were a party of eight, three of which were small children. Food was delicious and happy to have a dairy free dessert which is surprisingly rare! The service was really slow but the staff were friendly. It has always been an unspoken rule that children should get served first but both the main course and desserts were given to the adults first and because of the very slow service the children had to wait quite a while for theirs. If you have children you’ll know this is dangerous as you’re likely to lose some of your food! It was lovely to find games and colouring to keep them entertained though. Will definitely come back

This venue will shortly be my new local so my family and I have been checking it out. Great beer, food, atmosphere and staff. Great job. Would only be enhanced by offering Timothy Taylor’s 😉

Good food, lacked atmosphere good sized car park

Sarah who served us was absolutely excellent - great attention to detail and lovely customer service throughout. The food as always was gorgeous!

We met friends from Harrogate - we came from Clitheroe so a nice half way. We all four had a delicious meal in lovely surroundings. The Manageress was chatty and pleasant and all the staff were friendly and helpful. Nothing was too much trouble. We all had different main courses - burger, gammon, fish pie - I had the quiche; my friend said it was the best fish pie she’d had for a long time! My quiche was delicious. The men were equally happy with their choices. We all had the mini desert plus coffee to finish and absolutely can recommend the Nelson to everyone. We weren’t rushed at all - lovely open and airy restaurant that makes you just want to come back. A real gem!

Tremendous food! Black pudding starter, chicken, ham and leek pie for main. Superb! I don't live anywhere near here unfortunately, but if I did I'd make this my local!

Had a fantastic family get together to celebrate our wedding anniversary. We have eaten here many times before. The staff are very friendly and were very accommodating to our needs. We had one of the private dining areas which seated our 14 guests comfortably. The food and service were excellent. They allowed us to trim up the room with our own balloons etc which was good. All in all it’s a thumbs up from us!

Popped in here 20 Sept 2024 having stopped the previous day for a drink. Set in beautiful surroundings and views the gardens are all equipped with lovely seating and tables. There is even a barrel where water can be obtained to fill up the dog bowls dotted around. We both decided to eat in and have the burgers which are homemade and absolutely delicious, topped with Monterrey Jack cheese, tomato, pickle, skin on fries and a side sauce. Honestly the best burger ever. I had a "to die for" chocolate brownie with vanilla ice cream and hubby had Biscoffe cheesecake and asked to swap the raspberry sorbet for honeycomb ice cream. Both were delicious. Drinks were good quality. Everyone from the bar staff to the waiting staff were friendly, attentive and professional. Lots of parking too. Would definitely recommend.

Our first visit after following the website for a few months. Why did we wait so long? Fabulous service, a lovely cosy and clean bar area and restaurant and attentive staff. We were warmly welcomed to a lovely table. Menu was exciting with lots to choose from. This is going to be our local!

Staff were rude on entering the restaurant area no hello blar blar . But HAVE YOU BOOK Said no wasn’t busy either but said sorry fully booked said loads of seating guy said it’s all taken we had 5 people with us so missed out

It was a last minute booking on my part. It was busy when we arrived and took a short while to be shown to our table. The staff were very good and the food was great. To say it was so busy the service was relatively quick. It was my granddaughter's 6th birthday. The staff made such a fuss of her and at the end of the meal brought out a brownie with a candle in it and sang Happy Birthday to her. It really made her day. When leaving she said she felt like a princess!

Expensive, strange limited menu, very slow service, 2 of the 5 cask ales ran out on a Tuesday evening when visiting.

Outstanding! We were blown away by how fantastic this place is, how hospitality should be done! After being let down by a neighbouring restaurant we called in the hope of a decent meal and we were NOT disappointed. The food was delicious, the staff were incredible. We both had Leek and Potato Soup which was delicious although it was only luke warm. The ciabatta that accompanied the soup was also delicious. Hubby had Steak which he really enjoyed. I had the Cauliflower Katsu curry which was OK. Cauliflower was really tasty, but hardly any sauce for the dish. Katsu sauce was also very watery. Rice was bland with hardly any sauce. Staff were friendly and attentive.

A truly exceptional experience. Spent the whole afternoon there today. Food, service and bar selection was excellent.The chef Ashley came out to speak with us along with his wife Lydia who are the Managers both came out to speak with customers. A truly fantastic experience which I shall certainly be returning to.

We visited a friend of ours and came here for lunch I had the fish pie it was beautiful very tasty,really enjoyed our day and the views were amazing at the back 😀

Went with family and friends, the atmosphere was welcoming and staff were friendly. The service was good too. I enjoyed the lamb shoulder - always my favourite and it never disappoints me!! Others had the sea bass which looked incredible and had many compliments - so no doubt it was a top choice! I finished off with the pina colada sundae and this was heavenly, from looks to taste it was superb! Compliments to the chef, we enjoyed everything! Will definitely be returning again.

We stopped off at the Nelson en route to a campsite in Harrogate and am I glad we did. The service and food were absolutely amazing. The staff went above and beyond to make sure we had everything we needed. The managers katie and Lydia were so friendly and professional, extremely charming ladies and so smiley. I had the fish pie and I have to say it's the best I've ever had and my friend Angela had the steak sandwich and it was huge. Cannot wait to visit again. 5 stars all the way. Well done💯

Disappointing! myself ordered for a main the gluten free cod and chips. The cod batter had no flavour at all which was quite disappointing and it was very hard crunchy batter which I ended up leaving. My partner then ordered a chicken burger for his main, when this came it had guacamole on it which wasn't listed on the menu so he had to pull the burger apart to scrape it all out so that was very disappointing too! The service wasn't overly great either, the person who brought out food out didn't ask if we want anything like sauces etc. So I had to sit and wait 10 minutes until I managed to the attention of another waitress. It also took them 20+ minutes after asking if we wanted desert (we said no as were disappointed ) so we could gey the lady's attention to have the bill. It seems they have a large menu but have not perfected all the items.

This is a large pub with bar seats around the fairly lively bar. However, even though there was a good atmosphere at the bar, the rest of the restaurant/pub was sadly lacking in good vibes. We were sat at a table clise to the stairs leading to the toilets and the outdoor area which felt like we were sitting in a corridor. People walking back and forth to the loos etc. The food was ok. Nothing out of the ordinary really. My husband doesn't eat vegetables but the dinner was covered in greens and carrots, on top of the mash even though it did not state on the menu that it came with veg. I relieved him of the veg but he wasn't impressed! All in all, not a place I'd recommend or return to . Maybe dining outside would be better.

Was driving home and we decided to call in for a bite to eat. Pub was nice enough, so we asked for a table at the bar! The staff found us a table and took our order for drinks. When he brought our drinks he give us the menu it was a A4 piece of paper with a menu typed on in small writing. We ordered chicken burger £16.95 Roast pork loin diner £18.95 Yorkshire pudding £1.25 Chunky chips £4.50 Onion rings £4.70 The drinks for 2 and 1/2 pints of coke £10.50 I had the roast pork diner and had to pay for the Yorkshire pudding extra as it seems in Yorkshire it’s not part of a Sunday dinner. The pork was tough slices of fatty pork. A piece of what looks like sausage meat. One carrot, two pieces of potato and some chopped up cabbage I think with two minuscule pieces of crackling. Plus the dried out Yorkshire pudding and a small amount of gravy all for the reasonable price of £20.20 (a joke) one of the poorest diners I have had. My granddaughter said her burger was ok although a bit pricey. The onion rings were nice. The extra chips were dry and tasteless. No one came and asked if we enjoyed the meal (we did not) we thought of mentioning the quality and service but what’s the point I don’t think they would have been interested anyway. My recommendation is avoid, we will never stop again.

Incredible dinning experience. One of Harrogate’s gems! We had great service from our waitress and the chef accommodated our families allergens. Our son was allowed to crawl on the carpets and we weren’t made to feel like having a baby there was an inconvenience. They brought a baby chair for the table as well.

All just so-so. Needs to be brightened up all round. Waited ages for bar service, muscles seemed to be microwaved and rubbery when served. All round could be much better.

Came for Sunday lunch and was very disappointing. Had the Roast Pork and had to pay extra for a yorkshire pudding (ridiculous) the food was only luke warm, pork was dry, and needed a magnifying glass to find the crackling. It came with the smallest amount of gravy, and i would have asked for more if the waitress had not plonked the food down in front of me and disappeared so fast. No one came to ask if everything was ok during my meal. Very poor indeed.

We had heard about this pub just outside Harrogate & felt like it was one we should try. The staff are genuinely really lovely & helpful, Matt our waiter was very knowledgeable & had a great sense of humour. We had the Sunday Lunch which was exceptional, we also loved the fact you could have a small pudding with either coffee or tea. Despite it being rather busy the service was prompt. We would Highly recommend & we’ll be returning soon.

The restaurant seating offers beautiful sunny views of the farms and hills while you enjoy your supper. The staff were very friendly and attentive. We enjoyed our supper very much. The food was good.

So close, yet so far. Food was exceptional (even if my order was wrong) No apology - no offer to bring what I actually asked for. Worth a go if you’re happy for poor service but great food!

What a surprise gem. My sister highly recommended the Nelson Inn and we weren't disappointed. Such delicious meals! It was hard not to try more. Menu changes daily but I'll share what I had. Highly recommend the mushroom miso soup starter. The butternut curry with added lime was delightful. The calamari is the perfect crunch with a great dipping sauce.

Really nice, relaxed atmosphere and friendly staff and customers. The food was delicious and the whole vibe was just relaxing and comfortable. Our black Lab was welcome and got his own water dish and biscuit supply and got on well with the other black Lab at the next table, especially when they set up a food staring tag team when our food arrived.

Wonderful welcome every time I went in whilst staying on a local farm. Different times of day. Dogs very welcome and a no dog area for those who want it (carpeted area overlooking countryside). Excellent decore and kept very clean. Saw the food but arrangements we has sadly prevented us eating there too. It looked great and very well presented. I thought the menu was good value.

Excellent food coupled with great service and a fair price makes this place a great Sunday Lunch destination. Gluten Free options are available and cover most of the menu so noone feels left out. Really enjoyable meal for all.

Very busy, thankfully, we were just able to get a table. Food was very nice was only let down by the frozen roast potatoes.

A cozy friendly pub that has delicious dishes at reasonable prices. The staff were extremely friendly and helpful, and it is a very relaxing environment whether you are there just for a drink or for a meal. The sticky toffee pudding is to die for, and my husband can't stop talking about how amazing and full the chicken, ham and leek pie was. We will definitely return again when in the area.

This was the third time we visited and honestly we will not be returning. They seemed to forget we were there and had to go get a server on a couple of occasions. It is a shame as the previous 2 visits were really good. Some of the dishes we ordered were not the best and it all felt very rushed on the cooking side. I can understand some of the issues as we were a very large party but no excuse for the quality of the food and lack of service.

Visited for lunch after a walk round Fewston reservoir. Plenty of parking. Pub is large and well decorated / furnished. Staff were incredibly welcoming and friendly. Guinness was good. Stake sandwich was excellent and great value for money. The dog enjoyed drying by the fire. Will definitely pop in again, next time we’re passing.

The food was fantastic aswell as the service. The only downside is the atmosphere has gone to what it was before when Dale & his family had it.

Been refurbished lovely inside and very accommodating server after we didn't realise one of our guests was coming in a wheelchair after we had be arranged a table up some stairs , so I'm very grateful for server to be able sort a new big table on the flat area at short notice, very generous portions for Sunday lunch and extra gravy was no problem, all very delicious, although I know my mum was disappointed in the very small scoop of ice cream but tasted great

Called in for tea one evening …place was t over busy at first ordered food and drinks no issue… sides were forgotten so we had to ask at the bar for them and then arrived after had finished our mains …no meal check either. Sat for a further 30’mins after we had finished with no offer of deserts or out plates being cleared in the end we had to go to the bar for our bill .. food was average and service was a let down …went elsewhere for desert.
